PGA of Great Britain & Ireland professional, Garry Houston, pulled six points clear of the field to win the fourth World Club Pro-Am supported by the PGA of South Africa.

“To break par every round was quite an achievement,” said Houston, who carded a final round of 37 points (-1), to finish with a five-round total of 190 points (-10).

“I’m really excited…I played with last year’s defending champion [Julien Gressier] today, so I knew he would be strong and it was great to come over the line at the end.”

Beachwood Country Club

A stone’s throw from Durban Country Club, the Durban Country Club Beachwood course is a hidden gem offering a superb challenge for the golfer that enjoys a typical Links layout. It is currently rated 29 in the Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in SA.

The course was taken over by Durban Country Club in the early 1990’s and underwent some refining and alterations to bring the course closer to Championship standard – offering the discerning golfer an alternative challenge at Beachwood.

An interesting aspect of the course is that it lies at the southern end of Virginia Airport – mainly for small commercial aircraft, private flights, training flights and helicopters – adding an element of excitement to see these small aircraft take off and land directly overhead.

Barring the par 3 second, all the fairways run parallel to one another in a N-NE / S-SW direction. The sixth and ninth fairways both have a dog-leg left to consider whereas the other fairways are all straight. There are 41 bunkers around the greens, and 33 fairway bunkers waiting for wayward shots. Four of the holes are blessed with water features and most fairways are lined with trees.

This course is a very good challenge to the handicap, for the fairways are narrow and long, and require precision tee shots and lay-ups. The course is maintained with the same diligence and care as that of the Country Club course.

    Cotswold Downs Golf Estate

Cotswold Downs is a magnificent 18-hole Championship signature golf course, designed by South Africa’s renowned golf course designer, Peter Matkovich. The golf course is built to USGA specifications and as such boasts world class putting surfaces and is maintained all round to international standards. Cotswold Downs was rated by Complete Golfer in 2008 as the best conditioned in golf course in KZN and one of the finest in the country, since receiving this award the course itself has matured to point that playing Cotswold Downs is a must for any golfer when living or traveling to the Zulu Kingdom.

The Cotswold Downs golf course is a model of excellent design in which golf and nature go hand in hand. The topography provides for some spectacular views from tee boxes, fairways and greens while the wetlands, ponds and dams create outstanding natural water features. As a finishing touch, bent grass greens create a superior putting surface.

The elevation of the land allows for the estate homes and the golf to blend in well without interfering with each other. The layout is designed in such a way that strike lines are much further than at any other golf estate, which means that homes on the estate will not intrude on the golf course and vice versa.
