Ryder Cup European Development Trust

The Ryder Cup European Development Trust was set up in order to support golf at grass roots level throughout Europe. The idea of the Trust is to get more people starting to play golf, continuing to play and ultimately succeeding in the game.

Samuel Ryder started the Ryder Cup in 1927, and after some 65 years of the competition being under the ownership of The PGA, it was then run as a 50/50 joint venture with The European Tour.

In 2004 a new Ryder Cup agreement was drawn up, to involve The Confederation of Professional Golf through a charitable trust, changing the split to 60/20/20, with the European Tour becoming the managing partner. At the same time the Ryder Cup European Development Trust was created, in order to allow Ryder Cup to put even more back into grass roots golf across the continent. The PGA remained significantly involved as the founding partner.

The Ryder Cup European Development Trust is a registered charity under the control of The Confederation of Professional Golf, with objectives to further develop golf across Europe. The Trust manages its share of profits from the Ryder Cup in a tax-efficient method to give the Trust the opportunity to maximise funds to contribute to golf projects across Europe.

Mike Round (48) was born in Great Barr, Birmingham and graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in P.E., Sports Science and Recreation Management in 1987.

He started his career as a Fitness Development Officer then spent nine years in local government, initially as a Sports Development Officer, and eventually as a Principal Leisure Officer. During that time, he was involved with the production of development plans across a variety of sports, the contract monitoring of a large leisure centre, the management of a number of sports facilities, the organisation of events, and the allocation of capital grants.

In January 1998, he became the Golf Foundation’s first ever Development Manager and by September 1999 he had established the UK’s first network of Regional Development Officers. He took over as Chief Executive in May 2000 and oversaw an investment of approximately £1.7M per year into grass roots junior golf through a team of over 20 staff. In this role he was involved with the development and delivery of all of the Golf Foundation’s initiatives and he sat on Boards of the England Golf Partnership, Golf Development Wales, and ClubGolf (the national development partnership in Scotland).

At the beginning of September 2014, Mike joined the Ladies European Tour (LET) as the Director of Development and Membership.  In this newly created post, he has been tasked with creating a strategy for how the LET can add value to the development plans in the countries where it has a connection.  This will involve working closely with a variety of local, national and international organisations to deliver programmes that inspire women and girls to want to play the sport, and help emerging players to achieve their full potential.

Aside from his involvement in golf, he is an active basketball coach. Having had his own playing career cut short by injury, he now coaches an U14 Boys team in the Basketball England National League and has previously been an Assistant Coach at the England Basketball Midlands Area Performance Centre, as well as an Assistant Coach for the East Midlands U13s and U15s regional teams, and an U15s Head Coach at a county level.
