PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professionals, Paul Broadhurst and Robert Coles, have been crowned the 2014 Golfbreaks.com Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Champions after a systematic final round six-under par 65 helped them to capitalise on their second round lead and take home the winners’ cheque for €6,000.
The pair looked to be a star attraction at the championship hosted once again by Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club, with numerous wins between them across successful careers and no less than 962 European Tour appearances combined. Both players proved their mettle with outstanding performances across both courses at Lumine to finish on an 18-under par total of 196.
“It’s brilliant – at the start of the week you see how many good players are playing and whether it’s a good field so to come top is fantastic,” said Coles, who was also victorious in the Confederation of Professional Golf-sanctioned 2013 Beko Classic at Gloria Golf Club, Turkey, in November.
“With this format you know there’s going to be a lot of birdies so the idea was for Rob to go off every tee first and get it in play to take the pressure off me,” explained ex-Ryder Cup player, Broadhurst. “Then hopefully I could get it in play and make a few putts. But my man here played solid all week, he took a lot of pressure off me – just by seeing a ball in the middle of every fairway. He drives it straighter than anyone I’ve ever played with.”
A Round 1 four-under 68 at the Hills course in windy conditions was followed by an eight-under par 63 on the Lakes course, befitting of their tactical play that would eventually see them sew up victory by one shot.
“We didn’t get off to a great start – I missed from three-feet for birdie and then I was hitting everything left for the first few holes…we were behind the guys we were playing with and then Rob kicked into gear and got a couple under. The back-nine played tough, once we’d turned back into the wind 15 and 16 were difficult and I managed to play those pretty good and Rob played the last pretty good for a one-shot victory,” added Broadhurst.
The event was this year supported by Golfbreaks.com enabling the prize fund to be boosted to €40,000 for the 42 teams that made the cut after Round 2, and was heavily supported by the Costa Daurada tourist board, as well as the local tourist offices of Cabrils, Salou, and La Pineda Pinja.
Both receiving €3,215 of this boosted prize fund were the PGA of Italy pairs that tied for second place – Gregory Molteni and Alessandro Tadini and fellow countrymen Andrea Zanini and Alessandro Grammatica. The pairs managed to match all three rounds’ scores with two-under par 70s around the Hills course, followed by Round 2 eight-under 63s and great third round efforts for seven-under par 64s each on the Lakes course.
Fourth place fell to the pair of Xavier Guzman and Xavier Pulg whose final round ten-under 61 wasn’t enough to bolster their first round 70 and second round 67, but did equal the low round of the tournament.
The Confederation of Professional Golf wish to thank Golfbreaks.com, Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club, the Costa Daurada, the local tourist boards of Cambrils, Salou, and La Pineda Platja, and hotel Tryp Port Cambrils, for all of their support in making the event a huge success.

LUMINE Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club
Located on 170 acres, Lumine Golf Club’s two 18-hole courses, the Greg Norman designed Lakes Course, and the white-pine-lined Hills Course, will host the championship for the second year after rave reviews from last year’s competitors. Winding its way around the picturesque Sèquia Major wetlands, the Lakes course bears all the hallmarks of the Great White Shark and is undoubtedly the most testing of the resorts three courses. A links-style championship layout, it features several water hazards and tests all aspects of the game. Located within 170 acres, LUMINE Golf Club also includes the more traditional Hills Course, a second 18-hole championship course that runs through pine and olive trees with spectacular views of the nearby coastline.
