Wrigley Sets Pace in Al Ain2 min read

Posted on: 28th Jan 2019

Alex Wrigley (PGA of GB&I) has taken the early lead after Round 01 of the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club International Pro-Am, supported by Abu Dhabi Sports Council, with an opening round of 69 (-1).

At a very windy Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club (AESGC), UAE, Wrigley’s steady one-under par positions him one stroke ahead of Chris Gane (PGA of GB&I), Henrik Engdahl (PGA of Greece), Petr Skopovy (PGA of Czech Republic) and Mark Ridley (PGA of GB&I) who each share second place on even par (70).

“I got off to a nice start on the back nine, and then the wind just seemed to make the front nine a lot more difficult today, but I’m pretty happy with a one-under start,” said Wrigley.

“I always feel rusty the first couple of rounds after the long break over the winter and hopefully I’ll get more into it on the third and fourth round when we know where everyone is sitting on the leaderboard.”

AESGC is a course where Wrigley clearly feels comfortable having won the Pro-Am event and finished second three times in recent history, so a strong early start sets him on a good path to look for another win.

But with defending champion Chris Gane, who won last year’s event by beating Wrigley in a play-off, only one shot behind, anything could still happen over the next three days.

In the Team Pro-Am event, Team Watremez, led by Professional, Guillaume Watremez (PGA of Belgium), with Amateurs Benoit Pierlot, Barbara Deronchene and Anne Alexis, along with Team Dooley, led by Steve Dooley (PGA of GB&I) and amateurs Manfred Engstler, Alfred Velharticky, and Claudia Stritecky, each share the lead with 84 stableford points (-12). Team Gane sit four points back in third place 80 points (-8).
