The big story of Round Two of the UniCredit PGA Professional Championship of Europe is certainly not in contention – honours go to French PGA member Benjamin Nicolay, having stormed the golf course to card an eight-under-par round of 64 taking him to nine-under-par for the tournament.
Having started par –bogey, Nicolay ensured he kept control making three birdies before the turn, and then beginning a serious run of four consecutive birdies, with another two in the final five holes.
“I managed to keep the ball in play all day and was able to hit a lot of good shots close to the pin and today compared to yesterday I made the putts” said Benjamin upon completion, “I just want to have a chance to be in contention coming into the last day, there’s still two rounds to be played and we’ll see”.
Meanwhile the rest of the field continued to take advantage of the ever-improving conditions with just under half the field sub-par for the tournament. Overnight leader, Spaniard Mikel Galdos, remains in the hunt having made a solid one-under-par 71 today, keeping him tied second, with the rest of yesterday’s four all in the top-5 places on the leaderboard as we reach the halfway stage. So whilst Nicolay stole the show with his stunning 64, the remaining players are only three-shots off, and will no doubt be keeping a close check on his progress going into the third round.
