Pierrick Peracino & Jean Pierre Verselin (PGA of France) and Xavier Puig Giner & Adria Arnaus Antunex (PGA of Spain) lead the 2018 Fourball Championship Presented By Costa Daurada each at a eight-under par.
The Fourball Championship forms the second half of the Costa Daurada Golf Festival at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Spain, and sees over 200 PGA Professionals compete across 54 betterball holes.
France’s Peracino & Verselin played the par-72 Hills Course carding a one-sided 64 that consisted of seven birdies on the front nine and a single birdie on the back nine.
“We played very well on the front nine with seven birdies, but we didn’t make any bogeys so that’s a good day,” said Verselin. “It’s a very nice course and the greens are in great shape, they are perfect.”
The Spanish pair of Puig Giner & Arnaus Antunex also took 29 shots to complete their front nine on Lumine’s Lakes Course with two more for their eight-under 63.
“We started very well – especially Adria, he started with three birdies in a row on the first three holes,” said Puig Giner. “We continued fighting but with the wind and the fast greens it’s not easy. I think we have a good chance this week, but we have to play well because there are a lot of great players.”
Three pairs are tied for third place, all of which carded seven-under 64s around the Lakes Course – PGA of Spain Professionals Carlos del Moral Barilari & Jordi Garcia del Moral, and PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professionals Phillip Kelly & Andrew Scrimshaw, and Colm Moriarty & Tim Rice.
30 pairs are within four shots of the lead as the Championship enters its second round, after which a cut of the top 40 pairs and ties will determine who makes it through to battle for the Fourball title.
Round 02 begins at 09:00am (GMT+1).
