Xavier Puig Giner & Adria Arnaus Antunex produced a wire-to-wire finish in the 2018 Fourball Championship Presented By Costa Daurada at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Spain, beating over 200 PGA Professionals to win the Championship with an outstanding -28 total (186).
“It’s a great pleasure to win, and we’re very happy as it’s the first tournament of the season,” said Puig Giner after his pair’s closing 62. “Playing with Adria was very nice and it was great to learn next to each other and do good things.”
A 63 in the first round and 61 in the second round had given the pair a three shot lead into the final day, and with so many pairs on their tail they knew that aggressive play was required.
“I had an idea what could be the winning score because we were rooming with two past champions,” added Arnaus Antunex. “So we kept a total in front of us and tried to make as many birdies as we could.”
An eagle and three birdies on the outward nine followed by four birdies on the way in lead to a nine-under par 62 and their -28 total.
Four shots back on -24 (190) in second place were Carlos del Moral Barilari & Jordi Garcia del Moral (PGA of Spain) whose second 63 of the Championship was not quite enough to catch the lead of the eventual winners.
“We played good golf this week to finish second,” said Garcia del Moral. “It was a bit of pity because we played well, but Adria and Xavi played awesome so we are pretty happy.”
Third place fell to another PGA of Spain pair, Liam Murray & Jordan Gibb. This pair had started their Championship with a strong 65 on the Lakes Course but were not able to make up the ground required, despite a closing 64 on the Lakes Course.
“The Fourball is a fun event to start the year with,” said Murray. “It’s nice to know you have a partner who lets you wing it a little bit – you’re not sure exactly where it’s going to go because we haven’t played as much, so you can see how you deal with some pressure and how different areas of your game are holding up.”
“Lumine has good players golf courses,” added Gibb. “If you hit the ball well then it’s fair and that’s what you want in a course – to reward good shots.”
