The PGA of Spain were the dominant force in Round 01 of the 2016 Golfbreaks.com Fourball Championship with the top three places occupied by local PGA Professional pairs.
The pairs of Xavier Guzman & Juan Sarasti and Gerard Piris Mateu & Ivo Giner lead the way at 11-under par following outstanding rounds of 60 at the Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club’s Lakes Course and 61 at the Hills course repspectively.
After the predicted strong winds across the Costa Daurada coastline never emerged, scoring well was back on the cards for the 116 PGA Professional pairs battling it out. A string of birdies for the Guzman/Sarasti partnership spanning both the front and back nines of the Lakes were bolstered by an eagle two from Sarasti on the par-four 13th hole for their -11 total.
Meanwhile on the Hills Coure, the Piris/Giner pair also went on a birdie-spree with no less than six consecutive birdies on the back nine, returning home in just 29 shots.
One shot behind is the pair representing a legendary golfing dynasty in the form of Javier and Manuel Ballesteros, the son and nephew of European golfing icon, Seve Ballesteros.
Javier and Manuel also made light work of the Lakes Course again carding 11 birdies, but allowed a single bogey at the 14th hole to reduce their total down to -10 (61).
Two pairs of PGA Professionals sit at nine-under – Molteni/Tadini (PGA of Italy) and Puig/Angles (PGA of Spain) – whilst no less than eight pairs are joined at tie-sixth position at seven-under par, including defending champions Matthew Cort & Craig Shave (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland).
Competitors will switch courses for Round 02 before a cut comes in to play at the end of the round that sees the top-40 pairs and ties continue into the final round over the Lakes Course.
