Piris & Giner Gear Up For Final Fourball Battle2 min read

Posted on: 11th Feb 2016

PGA Professionals Gerard Piris Mateu & Ivo Giner continued their assault on the 2016 Golfbreaks.com Fourball Championship in Round 02 after a nine-under par 62 gave them a two –shot advantage heading into the final round.

The PGA of Spain pair got their day off to a fast start on Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club’s Lakes Course:, leading the 40 PGA Professional Pairs that made it through the -8 cut mark to progress to the final round.

“We started off like a Ferrari with six birdies in a row,” said Piris Mateu. “In the middle of the round we stopped a little bit but we made some birdies to finish so we’re very happy.”

“We kept our momentum up and started really well,” added Giner. “In the end we had a point where there was a lot of heavy rain, but after when the sun came out again we made a couple of birdies.”

Two shots behind at -18 are Xavier Guzman & Juan Sarasti along with Xavier Puig & Pep Angles, each very much in with a chance of pushing for the lead in the final round.

Guzman & Sarasti managed to tame the Hills Course that played one shot more difficult on average than in Round 01. A quiet front nine with two birdies and seven pars was followed up by six birdies and a bogey on the back nine for a 65 and a 125 total.

Puig & Angles meanwhile made good ground with nine birdies and nine pars for their excellent and hard-fought 62 on the Lakes Course:

“It was a great day because the conditions were a little bit tough with the rain and wind,” said Puig. “We started well with three birdies and made some more on the back nine as well.”

The pair are definitely in a positive frame of mind when it comes to competing on the final day:

“I think we’re in a good position for tomorrow – we definitely wanted to be either leading or two or three strokes back to have a chance.

A further two PGA of Spain pairs are in fourth and fifth place showing the dominance of the locals throughout. Javier & Manuel Ballesteros made 66 on the Hills for fourth at -16 (127), whilst Borja Etchart & Eduardo Larrañaga made a second consecutive 64 to finish at -15 (128).
