The PGA of Spain’s Alvaro Salto took the lead after the first round of the 2018 Beko Classic Pro-Am, with an opening five under-par (67) at Carya Golf Club in Turkey.
The Spaniard quickly found himself one-over par through six holes, but then birdied six of his last 12 holes snatching the lead from defending champion, David Lynn, who trails by a single shot alongside Andrew Marshall, Haydn McCullen, Luca Cianchetti and the PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes, at four-under par (68).
“My front nine wasn’t very good but I finished great,” said Salto. “I finished with four consecutive birdies so I’m really happy with that.
“I think the Pro-Am format will help me tomorrow as I’ll be focusing on my game rather than on the other professionals…my team also did great and I think they made me play better.”
Only two shots off the lead at three-under par is the 2005 US Open Champion, Michael Campbell, who was able to card a three-under par 69 to put him in contention having not played the golf course before.
2014 winning Ryder Cup Captain, Paul McGinley, also made a steady start in his first Professional event in Turkey closing his round at two-under par (70).
