Archbold Completes Great Event for Germany
PAUL ARCHBOLD, Director of Golf at the Golf-Und Country Club Seddiner See, was an impressive winner of the PGAs-of Europe-endorsed Kempinski ‘The Dome’ Pro-Am, Antalya, as two Germany-based PGA pros finished among the top three.
Archbold’s 54-hole score of 210 gave him a two-stroke margin on joint runners-up Erol Simsek, a Turk who is also based in Germany, and the Slovenian Andrej Kraljic as the event followed a few days after the Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship to complete a memorable two weeks ‘festival’ in southern Turkey.
Fortunately, for the final round, the poor conditions of the first two days gave way to a kinder, sun-warmed ambience, as Archbold settled for the level-par that defended the winning lead he had established earlier. However, there was disappointment for the home-based professional, Turkish PGA pro Hakan Yamac, who slipped back with a 74 for level-par overall and fifth place, one shot behind Lee Spencer who finished on one under par.
Disappointment, also, for the Italy-based Californian, Zeke Martinez, whose excellent opening in pursuit of his first victory in a Confederation of Professional Golf dwindled to a final-round 74 for a 215 total and sixth place. The experienced Scottish Pro-Am specialist, Willie Milne, was one of a trio of leaders on four under par at the end of the first day.
Sharing the impressive opening score of 68 with him were Martinez and Yamac though, with the field split into two, in using both courses, the tougher PGA-bonded Sultan and the Pasha for the opening rounds, Day 2 proved to be one of ‘levelling out’. So once each player had played both courses the actual pattern was established.
On a difficult second day, when rain hosed down virtually throughout, the consistency of Archbold – who added a second 69 on the Pasha to a similar effort in the previous round on the Sultan – shone through and took him into a two-stroke lead on the rest of the field.
As the only player to stay in red figures on both courses, Archbold well deserved the cushion that he took into the final round, especially as he was able to maintain his form in those adverse
