The Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship returns to Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community, Tarragona, in the Costa Dorada region of Spain, and is expanded this year to be played over two of the fantastic courses at Lumine enabling up to 120 pairs to compete in the popular better-ball event.

Austrian Aces Take 2013 Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship Title

Maurer carded a ten-under par 61 around the Lakes course at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Spain to finish at 21-under for the tournament, capturing the 2013 Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship and taking home the €4,500 first prize.

Austria’s Weinhandl & Maurer continued their form from the previous two rounds with the lowest score of the week in their final assault, closely followed by England’s Mark Ridley & David Clark with a total of 20-under par.

The Austrian’s comparatively modest opening round 68 set them off on the right foot ensuring it gave them a platform to move forward on day two. And move forward they did: their excellent second round 64 was aided by a Hole-in-One on the 211m Par-3 14th of the Hills course from Maurer:

“Uli hit a little six-iron before me very close to the pin, so it was one way to make a better score!” said Maurer. “It was my first ace in a tournament so it was something special.”

A blemish-free third round consisting of 10 birdies meant the pairing completed their round as clubhouse leaders leaving a nervous wait as the final groups finished.

“It was quite close,” said Maurer. “We were just one ahead and then on the last we saw the other guys holing one for eagle so we actually thought it could be a playoff…overall we’re really happy.”

“It was a great pleasure to play here and a great start to the season,” added Weinhandl of the win. “We played really well – the first day we struggled a little bit but then yesterday and today were really good.”

The Ridley and Clark pair began their foray in the tournament with a seven-under 65 around the Hills course, which was followed by an eight-under 63 in Round Twoon the Lakes course, securing a late final round tee-time, in which they showed continued fight carding a fantastic 66.

But sadly even their eagle on the 18th hole was not enough to force a playoff, leaving them just a single shot off the pace:

“It’s been a great start to the year for us,” said Ridley. “The course was great and it’s been nice to get away and play some golf.”

Clark also added, “obviously we’re disappointed that we couldn’t quite finish it off but we played pretty good everyday so no complaints…we shot a decent score but the others did better.”

Ridley & Clark Maintain Lead with 63 in Sunny Spain

The weather for Round Two of the Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship, held this year at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Spain, was notably better than the pervious day’s exploits, shown by a myriad of low scores across both the Hills and Lakes courses.

Also playing in the final group are Portugal’s Nelson Cavalheiro & Hugo Santos whose low round of 64 on the Lakes positioned them once again with a share of second place.Improved weather conditions meant each course was receptive enough for low rounds – not least from the overnight leaders, Ridley & Clark, who carded an eight-under 63 on the Par-71 Lakes to hold a two shot lead going into day three.

The other overnight leaders, Herreria & Del Castillo [Spain], continued their excellent form, carding a six-under 65 to keep them near the top of the leaderboard and in the penultimate group for the final round alongside another 63 pair in the shape of Andrej and Danny Kraljic.

Also lying at tie-fourth place is the pair of Uli Weinhandl & Jurgen Maurer’s whose 64 was aided by a Hole-in-One on the 211m Par-3 14th of the Hills course from Maurer, whilst Craig Swinburn & Matthew McGuire’s assistance came in the form of an eagle two on the Hills’ 306m Par-4 18th hole after Swinburn drove the green with his tee-shot.

Herreria & Del Castillo and Ridley & Clark are Leading Lights at Lumine

The 2013 Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship has got off to a flying start in somewhat damp conditions at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Tarragona, Spain, with Mark Ridley and David Clark from the PGA of GB&I and Pablo Herreria and Ismael Del Castillo from the PGA of Spain leading the charge through Round One.

The pairings of Herreria & Del Castillo and Ridley & Clark both tackled the Hills course each scoring seven-under 65s with only one bogey recorded between both pairs.Play got underway across both the Hills and Lakes Courses at Lumine Golf Club in wet and windy conditions, but with nowhere near the force that was forecast for the day, giving the players a welcome opportunity to post some excellent opening rounds.

Three pairs on the Par-71 Lakes course (Saluda & Ossowski, Gronkvist & Magnusson, and Van Hauwe & Vandooren) carded six-under 65s, whilst Cavalheiro & Santos carded a six-under 66 around the Hills course.

Two pairs of Peter Bronson & David Pastor and Erik Moll & Lothar Jahn lie at tied-for-seventh five-iunder par, followed by no less than 13 players tied for ninth place, all firing four-under par rounds across both courses.

With the top twenty-one players all within three of the lead, the door is wide open for the teams to make their moves as they switch courses for round two.

McGuire and Swinburn Return to Lumine to Defend Fourball Title

England’s Matt McGuire and Craig Swinburn will make a welcome return to the Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship from March 1st-3rd at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community to defend their 2012 title.

The pair will battle it out against teams from 12 different national PGAs across the 54-hole event played out on the Greg Norman layouts of Lumine in the Costa Dorada region of Spain, with a cut after 36 holes.

The 2012 edition of the Fourball Championship, also at Lumine, got off to a firing start with McGuire and Swinburn posting a two-round total of 16-under par, leaving them with a four-shot advantage going into the last day.

They held strong on Day-Three, and whilst there weren’t as many fireworks as Days One and Two had produced, a solid four-under 67 ensured they took the crown by three shots.

Also competing this year are the pair of Michael Jones (England) and Garry Houston (Wales) whose 17-under total earned them second place in 2012, as well as the Portuguese pair of Nelson Cavalheiro and 2011 & 2012 PGA Professional Champion of Europe, Hugo Santos.

Another star to look out for is European Seniors Tour 2012 ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship winner, Paul Wesselingh, who came through Seniors Tour Qualifying to finish Runner-Up in his first event and then winning the next.

Lumine to Play Host to Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship for Second Year

The Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship returns to Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community, Tarragona, in the Costa Dorada region of Spain from the 1st – 3rd March 2013.

This year the championship will be expanded to be played over two of the fantastic courses at Lumine Golf Club enabling up to 120 pairs to compete in the popular better-ball event that provides the ideal chance of some welcome springtime competition for PGA professionals. The event will take place over 54 holes with a cut after 36 holes, with the final 18 played out over one course.

Calle Carlsson, General Manager of Lumine Golf Club is delighted that the event will be returning once again to the flourishing Spanish destination, “This event and our partnership with the Confederation of Professional Golf are part of a long-term strategy that involves welcoming key influencers to experience our magnificent offering at Lumine, so naturally we are looking forward to welcoming the competitors once again. In 2012 we witnessed a thrilling finale over the Greg Norman designed, Lumine Lakes Course that confirmed our credentials as an up-and-coming championship destination.”

Under the management of Troon the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing, Lumine Golf Club is one of Europe’s most vibrant new golfing destinations. The impressive 45-hole facility offers a perfect combination of championship golf, luxury accommodation, modern Mediterranean cuisine and first-rate leisure facilities, which can be easily accessed via the nearby Reus airport or a 45-minute drive from Barcelona International Airport.

Located on 170 acres, Lumine Golf Club’s three courses are spearheaded by The Lakes Course, a links-style championship course designed by golfing legend Greg Norman that features several water hazards that wind around the Sèquia Major wetlands. The Hills Course, Lumine’s second championship course runs through white pine trees and offers spectacular views of the nearby coastline. Completing the golf offering is the 9-hole Ruins Course, another Greg Norman design, uniquely laid out amongst Roman archaeological remains from the second century BC.

The 2012 Fourball Championship was won by English pair Matt McGuire and Craig Swinburn in the championship’s first year at Lumine Beach & Golf Club, posting a 20-under-par total to take home the winner’s cheque for €4,500.

Further details will be released shortly.
