Stephen Gallacher Named 2025 European Junior Ryder Cup Captain3 min read

Posted on: 25th Jun 2024

Stephen Gallacher has been named as the European Captain for the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup Junior Ryder Cup in New York.

The four-time DP World Tour winner returns to the role having led Europe to a record 20½ – 9½ victory against the United States in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy, last year.

Six boys and six girls will take on the US Team in New York from September 23-25, 2025, with the first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup being played at Nassau Country Club before the decisive singles matches are held at Bethpage Black, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 45th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

The Scot ended a run of six straight defeats for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup as they secured a European record 11-point victory in Rome last year, and he will now aim to become the third Captain to lead Europe to victories both home and away, following Macarena Campomanes and Andy Ingram in 2002 and 2006 respectively.

“I’m delighted to have been given the chance to once again lead Team Europe in the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup in New York,” said Gallacher. “It was fantastic to oversee Europe’s record victory in Rome last year and I was so proud of the team and what they managed to achieve.

“The team spirit was unbelievable, and it is an honour to be their Captain once again. I’m looking forward to working with the most exciting future talent in Europe and taking on the United States in New York.

“The Ryder Cup means so much to me, so to be the Junior Captain again and have the chance to create bonds with the 12 players, like we did in Italy, will be very special.

“Being a Captain away from home will be a tough task, but it is a challenge that motivates me, and I will do everything I can to make sure our 12-strong team will be ready to head to New York in 2025.”

The Junior Ryder Cup has produced a plethora of golfing stars and once again in 2025 the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the USA will go head-to-head in the mixed event.

English amateur Kris Kim starred in Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup victory in Italy and earlier this year made history as the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event for 11 years when he made the weekend at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson aged just 16.

Helen Briem was also part of Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup winning team last year, and the German amateur made history earlier this month by becoming the first player to win three consecutive LET Access Series titles after triumphs at the Montauban Ladies Open, Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge and Santander Golf Tour-Avila.

Rory McIlroy, Nicolai Højgaard and Nicolas Colsaerts, the 2023 European Ryder Cup Vice-Captain, all triumphed in the junior event before also winning the Ryder Cup, while Suzanne Peterson, Carlota Ciganda and Emily Kristine Pedersen succeeded as amateurs before lifting the Solheim Cup.

Gallacher was part of the European team that defeated the United States to retain the Ryder Cup in 2014, winning 16½ to 11½ at Gleneagles, and boasts an impressive individual playing career with four victories on the DP World Tour.

He has also set up the Stephen Gallacher Foundation to help and encourage junior golfers in Scotland and he will again lead the European junior team as he continues to inspire the next generation of golfers.
