The first round of the 2015 La Manga Club International Pro-Am got underway today with a sterling performance from PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional, Liam Bond, who started his campaign for a second Confederation of Professional Golf Sanctioned Event Win in 2015 with a one-under par 70 around the La Manga Club’s North Course.
Coming off the back of a win at the Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am just 10 days ago, Bond put his best foot forward in hugely windy conditions with gusts of over 40kph throughout the day.
“It was really windy out there; they were very tough conditions,” explained Bond. “It was just a matter of trying to keep it under the wind and out of rubbish.
“The course was very good, I enjoyed it – I’ve never played the North Course before and it’s fiddly without wind so with the wind it was extra fiddly!”
Regulation pars from the first to fifth were interrupted by an uncharacteristic bogey at the par-five sixth hole, but after four more pars, birdies at 11 and 12 reversed his fortunes allowing him to close as the only player under par through Round 1.
In second place is another GB&I Professional, Nicholas Ludwell, who battled the elements through a round that included three bogeys and a single birdie at the 12th, one of the hardest holes of the day, for a two-over 73.
Completing the GB&I top-three is Darren Bragg who sits at four shots off the leader after a three-over par 74.
The Team Pro-Am event is headed up by the team of Maroš Gajan (PGA of Czech Republic) and amateurs Jiri Magyer, Jan Pizur, and Tomas Haulis, who lead with 75 points (-3).
Just two shots back is the PGA of GB&I’s John Paul Banbury and amateurs Steve Hadley, Scott Hansel, and Chris Stokes on a one-under par 73 points, who are then followed by five teams tied for third place, leaving it all to play for with two rounds remaining.
