With the two best 18-hole scores to count towards the team total each day, the exclusion of Perrino’s three-under-par 70 demonstrated how strong of a showing this was for the Italians, who have come very close before in this event and were certainly looking to make an early statement this time around.

Maestroni capped off Molteni’s four-under par 69 (four-under-par) with a scintillating 65 (eight-under-par) that was built around a carefully planned strategy and some quite mesmerising putting: “It is a great layout and with a good strategy, you can get a score going. Fortunately, I have two very strong teammates who are very straight off the tee and it ensured we could shoot the lowest round possible today.”

The players were quick to attribute their performances to a strong team ethic: “We are very good friends and I think that is really important. It means a lot to be representing the PGA of Italy and we are grateful for the opportunity to compete in the International Team Championship here at Penina”, commented Perrino. This was echoed by Molteni: “We are Italian, so we love to play as a team rather than just as individuals. Two years ago, we finished second but this year we have a very consistent team and I like our chances.”

In the Team Shield, Team Slovakia (Juraj Svarik, Adam Puchmelter and Jan Keher) also shared similar success after the first round, as they collectively shot 144 (71 from Svarik and 73 from Puchmelter) to lead Team Poland by 11 strokes heading into the second round.

After first and second rounds of 66 and 70 on the Bay and Dunes courses respectively, Lopes was positioned nicely at the top of a strong international field in Greece that comprised of 75 PGA Members from multiple CPG Member Countries including Sweden, Germany, Italy and Portugal.

“It is always a good feeling when you win a golf tournament” Lopes commented. “The double bogey on hole seven certainly placed some pressure on my score today but I trusted in my approach and my game. To then go on and make birdies on the final two holes was just amazing and a great way to finish off an incredibly well-organised event.

“Myself and my team enjoyed such a fantastic environment here at Costa Navarino, both on and off the golf course. The new International Olympic Academy Golf Course at Navarino Hills opened for the tournament and it is unbelievable. It is certainly challenging but it combines a great layout with amazing views to make a great golf course. We cannot wait to come back next year.”

In solo second was Georg Schultes (PGA of Austria), who finished on a total of 206 for the tournament with scores of 67, 69 and 70 to fall just short of the 205 three-round score set by Lopes, with third position held by Turkish Professional, Ulas Karatas, on 209 (-5).

In the Pro-Am team event, Team Dooley (represented by PGA of Austria Professional Steve Dooley and amateurs Claudia Stritecky, Gerhard Komarek and Julian Komarek) also claimed a marginal victory, winning by 1-point with a strong final round finish on the Bay course to reach an unassailable total of 262 points for the tournament.

The CPG is committed to ensuring golf is a sport for all, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, ability, age and background.

LISTEN: The Diversity and Inclusion Panel

The CPG are currently working with EDGA (formerly the European Disabled Golf Association) in an effort to improve the sport for people from disabled backgrounds. EDGA are a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation that aims to increase opportunities for disabled people to sample, participate and compete in golf, and provides advice surrounding disabled golf to a variety of golf’s governing bodies.

The organisation was founded in 2000, growing substantially to incorporate 20 national federations, with members located across the globe. Focusing on growing the game, the organisation has designed and implemented coach education programmes for rehabilitation centres, hospitals and golf clubs. All of these initiatives are available to its members, as are protocols for tournament administration, definitions of impairment, and other resources to help grow the numbers of golfers with disability around the world.

At the 2020 CPG Annual Congress, listeners were fortunate to have EDGA President, Tony Bennett, attend for the panel session on Diversity and Inclusion. Tony’s invaluable insights were eye-opening and informative such as the issue of unconscious bias, and how through the handicap system, golf has the potential to be the most inclusive of all sports.

The CPG are also committed to improving increased participation and membership opportunities for women’s golf. In 2018, the organisation marked this commitment by signing The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter, a global initiative that has gained significant support and momentum from across the golfing world, with over 50 federations, 30 organisations and PGAs, and numerous other golf facilities, making their own pledge to further the women’s game.

This work was recognised at the 2020 Annual Congress when it was awarded with the CPG’s President’s Award, accepted by The R&A’s Assistant Director of Golf Development Jackie Davidson, on behalf of The R&A.

CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell, reiterated the importance of change, saying “The R&A’s leadership is so important in driving change in our sport to ensure that it becomes more accessible, appealing and inclusive and we congratulate them on this initiative. It is a great example of how golf’s national and international organisations are increasing collaboration by collectively getting behind significant initiatives and programmes around the globe.

“Having made our own Women in Golf pledge at the time of launch and encouraged our Member PGAs to do likewise, we recognise the importance of the Charter, and support its goal of encouraging women across all levels and backgrounds to enjoy golf and thrive within the sport.”

As he reflected on a momentous victory for Team Europe at the 2018 Ryder Cup, captain Thomas Björn’s emotion was clear to see: “We will always have Paris”. It was a spectacle that stretched far beyond people’s imaginations and captured the hearts and minds of a continent. But for Pascal Grizot, the man behind that special week in 2018, the 2018 Ryder Cup was something far greater than three days of competition. It was, and continues to be, an opportunity to create a long-lasting legacy for golf in France.

Grizot’s background has always involved his two passions in life – business and golf. For 20 years he worked in the retail market, setting up and buying major companies, before continuing this across various different industries, both in and out of sport.

His strong golfing background comes from a successful playing career as an amateur with many individual titles to his name. In addition to being captain of France’s men’s teams for a number of years, he presided over the country’s maiden Eisenhower Trophy win in 2010 and their 2011 European Amateur Team Championship victory.

Such passions for business and golf have stood Grizot well in his many endeavours in the sport – contributions that have unquestionably raised the profile of golf in France enormously and brought about significant economic value to wider French society. In 2018, the Ryder Cup alone benefited the French economy with sums in the region of €235 million, achieved through ticket sales, international consumer spending, business investment and other commercial activity.

Changing perceptions

As President of the French Ryder Cup Committee, Grizot was at the forefront from the very start of the bidding process through to the successful conclusion of the matches in 2018. It was a bid that stemmed from his understanding of the perceptions of golf in France and the need to change them. Grizot adopted a bold strategy to do so, utilising the unique nature of the Ryder Cup to expose golf to a wider audience. Securing funding from the public and private sectors, as well as from the Federation’s own members, he was able to beat stiff competition from five other countries: “At the time, nobody imagined France could host the Ryder Cup – there had only been two previous French Ryder Cup players, the country had just one major golf course that was capable of hosting the event (Le Golf National), and there were other exceptional nations competing for the rights at the time.”

Yet to raise the sport’s profile and participation levels in France, both Grizot and the Fédération français de golf (ffgolf), which he is President of, recognised the significant impact that hosting a seismic event like the Ryder Cup would have. When Grizot and his team started the bidding process, France was also in the midst of its successful bid to host the 2016 European football championships and as Jean van de Velde, the first Frenchman to play in the Ryder Cup, concluded: “Football is king in France.” Despite competition within golf and other sports to host the matches which inevitably brought many challenges and pressures, Grizot looks back on that 10-year journey fondly.

In fact, it was during a certain week in April 2011 that the Frenchman acknowledges as being the instrumental moment. Surprisingly however, it was an occasion that didn’t demand Pascal’s acute negotiation skills, nor the astute business acumen that he had built up over his career. It was actually the advice of a close friend. “I am friends with Dermot Desmond (the Irish businessman and financier), who gave me lots of amazing advice regarding the Ryder Cup. I remember on one occasion during The Masters, which was at a pivotal point in the (Ryder Cup) bidding process, he said to me ‘Pascal, you must not speak to George O’Grady at any point during the week’.

“Lobbying for the French bid was such a huge responsibility for me and yet here I was, being told to avoid one of the key decision makers during a momentous week in the golfing calendar. Dermot is a close friend and I trusted him, so I did as he asked. When I was having dinner with Dermot and George walked in, Dermot would say ‘Pascal, you must leave’ and I proceeded to leave. George couldn’t understand each time why I didn’t want to speak to him: ‘Dermot, why is Pascal leaving?’ he would ask.” But behind the scenes Dermot was offering his own support on Grizot’s behalf. “When George O’Grady announced the decision on 17^th May 2011 that France would host the 2018 Ryder Cup, it was very special.”

The 2018 Ryder Cup would go down in history as a huge triumph for French golf, a notion echoed by CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell: “Pascal’s passion, determination and commitment were at the very core of the success of the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. The event exceeded the very high expectations and it will go down in history as the most successful Ryder Cup on many counts.” Team Europe, led by Captain Thomas Bjorn, would beat Team USA by 17.5-10.5 points in 2018, all the while being cheered on by over 270,000 spectators across the week.

A lasting legacy

Alongside the hosting of the Matches themselves, the bid that Pascal helped to create contained developmental and legacy-focused activities such as building 100 ‘petites structures’ or ‘urban courses’ closer to the population and the ‘Mon Carnet de Golf’ schools programme that introduced golf and the Ryder Cup to French schoolchildren. “The 100 short courses were the culmination of an ambitious plan for the development of golf carried by the ffgolf and are an illustration of the greatness of the legacy left by the Ryder Cup”. After 10 years of work, that short course project has had a significant impact on French golf, developing 17,000 new players, creating over 250 jobs and generating economic benefits such as increased investment into golf and contribution to the national GDP through an average of €220,000 of revenue and 3000 green fees per course. “These small structures are key to creating new golfers. They are the indication of the growth we are currently experiencing.”

There are limits to how far the sport can rise in France’s pecking order. It experienced rapid growth in the 1990s and early 2000s, but has often struggled to maintain that momentum leading into those 2018 matches. Relentless in his ambitions for French golf however, Grizot acknowledges the work must not stop. In his roles as President for ffgolf and Honorary President for the CPG, of which the latter organisation includes the PGA of France as a Member Country, Grizot holds local and international influence in the golfing world to be able to continue to enact change for French golf: “It’s now or never, because after all we’re doing, if there are not more golfers in France, sadly we will have a problem.” Certainly, golf in France can be comforted by having a man at the helm with a proven track record and a fiery enthusiasm to make the game better.

Does every device in your business really need to be connected to the internet? And could your smart appliance be turned against you?

If you try to purchase a new appliance these days, there is a good chance you will be guided toward the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art, smart appliances first. Whether you are in the market for a new dishwasher, fridge or even toaster, the chances are there is an internet-enabled device waiting to target you, but why the increase in IoT (internet of things)? Do we really crave every item in our houses and places of work to be smart, or do these companies have something a little more sinister up their sleeves where they actually just make things smart in order to learn more about us?

From the toothbrush that sends you a notification in the form of a graph of how well you brushed your teeth in the morning to the smart fork that senses if it thinks you’re eating too fast (I really am not making this up), we might just be walking into a future of IP-connected mayhem. IoT has boomed in the last decade and while I love a good gadget with a truly smart capability, where should we draw the line?

Some devices are arguably being produced with internet capability just for the sake of it. With more and more smart products coming to market as standard, what if I really don’t want an internet-connected washing machine? Does it make my life easier? And what about the security implications of having all these extra IP addresses in the home? Let’s not forget the saying that the ‘S’ in ‘IoT’ stands for security!

Data collectors

I was recently in the market for a new dishwasher and after lots of research, I found one that came highly reviewed and recommended. It happened to come with smart functionality by default and an app to download for all your smart home needs – apparently. I found a statement in marketing material about IoT dishwashers suggesting that you can take advantage of knowing ‘how long until the wash is done’, though I don’t see that as much of an issue when I’m out and about. I’m not sure about you, but this usually isn’t on my mind when I go out for a walk; then again, I guess they are catering for all people.

Such smart appliances are often around the same price as their equivalent non-smart model now too. Now I know I didn’t really need my dishwasher to be smart, but it was the same price and the techie inside me actually wanted to know its capabilities or to see if it could improve my life somewhat, so I carried on with the purchase and installed the app.

While setting up the app on my iPhone, I noticed a lot of data was being collected and linked to me, including my location, user content and contact info plus other identifiers. I went through all the settings and discovered a lack of two-factor authentication too, but this is typical with a lot of IoT.

Once I’d connected the app to the dishwasher, I wanted to see what type of connectivity I could take advantage of. I played around with the app for a bit and learned what was on offer. I opened the door to load the dishwasher, but I was soon interrupted as I had been sent a notification. I checked my phone and realized that I had been notified that the door had been opened…. I know! I opened it!

I quickly turned this notification off, but I soon found the app was not all that intuitive and in fact quite cumbersome. Later that evening and although I could have turned it on remotely, I was standing right next to it as I had just placed the last plate in; although I had my tablet with me, it was far quicker to turn it on physically, and like the reviews said, the dishwasher was refreshingly quiet when it started.

However, two hours later, it all changed in the house. I was standing next to my new appliance when the door began to open on its own accord as if it was possessed and was coming after me! Had my dishwasher been hacked and was now riddled with malware being remotely operated in order to kill me?! As the steam rose from the glistening plates, I soon realized that it was in fact the automatic door-opening feature that had sprung into action to improve the “drying performance”.

Ok, I overreacted a little, but this strange new spaceship-like feature caught me off guard and made me jump in the process. However, what this ordeal made me question was whether appliances and other gadgets really need to be smart? In this case, I am certain that the app was not, in fact, making my life more streamlined, so I deleted the app and made a conscious effort to stand clear of the door near the end of a cycle.

My hypothesis is that companies are in desperate need of our data. Cars have been sending a wealth of information back to their manufacturers for many years now and they are often the first to tell you that you have gone over the 10,000 miles threshold and now require service. This is now the norm for other gadgets around the home and we are seemingly willingly accepting this.

However, this information could be used against us if it were to get into the wrong hands. Malicious actors are constantly attacking websites looking for data and unfortunately some personal data inevitably still gets compromised and ends up on the dark web. Theoretically, threat actors could gain access to this live data in the cloud and even learn our daily habits, which could include when we have vacated the premises.

Although I am not aware of any data leaks involving smart household appliances, it is worth noting that these devices suck up a lot of personal data and store it in the cloud for multiple purposes – with, in my personal opinion, very little of this trade-off actually helping the products. This data trove can be seen as currency to some stakeholders and could be targeted so we must limit the amount of data we release in the first place.

If your device has to be internet enabled to function, consider reducing the amount of data you hand over to the developers of smart products. Furthermore, use unique passwords or passphrases, enable two-factor authentication where possible, and keep your devices updated to steer clear of as many vulnerabilities as possible.

Just consider this: If a malicious actor were to hold my dishwasher to ransom, there is a good chance they would get my money as I really hate washing up that much. So, until smart dishwasher apps come with being able to load the dishwasher, put the dishes in and unload it after a wash as standard, I think I’ll stick to traditional appliance usage in the kitchen for now.

Golf in Ukraine is still within its infancy. For over ten years however, that phase has become less and less significant, as new blood and fresh thinking has ushered in drastic and impressive progress for the sport in the Eastern-European country.

Working in close and tight unison, the Ukrainian Golf Federation and the PGA of Ukraine (a CPG Member Country), have created a partnership and way of working that is quite remarkable and could act as a strong case study of Collaboration that many other countries could, and should, aim to model. This sense of Togetherness has meant the number of golfers in Ukraine is on the rise (significantly) and the number of trained and qualified coaches and PGA Professionals are increasing too, illustrating that these two actors go hand-in-hand for golf development.

Marina Lavrenchuk is one of these fresh faces responsible for such success. As General Secretary of the PGA of Ukraine, she has been instrumental this year in a number of key initiatives, particularly around the education and assessment of coaches and members of the association. Having only joined in February 2021, she may be new to the role but she inherits an-almost blank canvas to paint and direct a bright and successful future for golf in the country. And in just 10 months, that progress is well underway…

CPG: You started in February this year, but how have you found the role so far and what are you starting to become involved in?

ML: When I joined, the PGA were at a very early phase of development. Most structures and initiatives were in their formation or early development phase, so it is still a very interesting stage for the organisation. Before this I was also involved in such work with the Ukrainian Golf Federation on some of their amateur golf projects so I do feel I can bring the experience and fresh thinking needed to drive progress here at the PGA of Ukraine, and it really helps that it is an ambitious organisation with an exciting direction in place.

In essence, my role is to create a strong and reputable administrative body for golf in the country. We are here to promote and develop high-quality training programmes and settings for our members to thrive. By doing so, we create high-quality members and coaches who carry the flag for golf in the country and drive participation collectively. A lot of this work has been underpinned by my academic research during my PhD too, so there is some strong thinking and data behind what we are trying to achieve.

CPG: What is it that the organisation is trying to achieve? Can you tell us more about the association?

ML: The PGA of Ukraine’s mission is to promote golf by implementing the highest standards in education, by raising the level of competitive golf and by representing ethical values arising from the traditions and history of the sport. This is underpinned by lots of activity including the organisation of educational sessions and courses, delivery of national and international tournaments, protecting the legal rights of our members and promoting the game in close collaboration with the Ukrainian Golf Federation.

Founded in 2017 by Denys Riabtsev, Ihor Zatravkin and Vitalii Tereschcenko, the PGA of Ukraine is now lead by myself and the current standing President – Ruslan Garkavenko. In the same year of its conception, we introduced our first Professional tournaments, including our own PGA Championship. Now in its fourth year, this has developed into a 2-stage event that culminates in a final and brings some of the best PGA Professionals in the country into one place to compete. This year, we were also delighted to become a full member of the Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG]. To have that international recognition has been a key milestone and we are very much looking forward to working with their team in various ways to help grow the game nationally and internationally.

Moving forwards, we will continue to develop these current plans and initiatives but a big goal is to ensure we build a strong commercial programme with engaging and collaborative partners who share the ethos of the PGA of Ukraine. This will ensure we can invest back into the game properly and help drive professional development and participation across the country as well. Aside from that, then the obvious one is to grow our member numbers and increase the quality of education for each. This really underpins everything we do.

CPG: You mentioned joining CPG earlier. Why is that important to you?

ML: CPG are a hugely reputable voice and organisation in golf and continue to drive standards across the game. By becoming a member, it recognises our organisation as being on the same level of standards as those more established PGAs such as Germany, Spain and Italy, of which are all members of the CPG too. It is a huge moment for us.

We hope through the CPG, we can drive our progress forwards even more and achieve the strategic goals we have set out. It will benefit us through support in education, knowledge sharing with other members, tournament opportunities and commercial partnerships and the Business Club, as well as other ad-hoc business support and advice that is so valued.

CPG: What does a current PGA of Ukraine member look like?

ML: The PGA of Ukraine has 35 members today (October 2021). At the beginning of 2021, there were 30 members. It is small gains but relative to the size of the sport right now in Ukraine this is huge.

The typical PGA of Ukraine Professional is first and foremost a golf coach. They spend so much time teaching the game and sharing their knowledge with others to ensure all ages enjoy and continue to participate in the sport. This is across various means: individually training club members, golf-clinics in groups at events, coaching in schools, coaching with the National Golf Team etc. Roughly 28 of our Professionals are doing this on a full-time basis but we do have a small number who are also pursuing careers in business and management, working at clubs and facilities to drive commercial success at those venues too.

Through their coaching, the PGA Professional is certainly influencing amateur golfers and the game but there is a lot of work to do to build our reputation and that of our members in the coming years. We believe all of our members will strive to become the leading influence in Ukraine for golf.

CPG: Let’s turn our focus to women’s golf in the country now. How is that progressing?

ML: The introduction of the sport over ten years ago has given enough time to build a strong foundation for women and girls to try and learn golf. Dozens of initiatives have been implemented and a whole movement of golfers has been created.

It is fantastic to see. In 2021 alone, we had 827 women registered on Datagolf, 191 of which are under 18 and 564 are between the ages of 19-50. We also have seven female members of the PGA of Ukraine too. Those demographics are crucial to longevity of the sport and so it is great to see a large proportion of each playing golf.

CPG: Do you consider yourself as a female influence?

ML: It is hard to say, as I have been in the position of General Secretary for less than a year. However, I have more than fifteen scientific articles written and produced during my PhD research. My PhD was in physical education and sport in specialty – Olympic and Professional Sport, where I studied at the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine. This research has been so far the only work of its kind for golf in Ukraine so I certainly could call myself a trailblazer of some sort! In all seriousness, my role certainly brings expectations but I think I have a responsibility to influence women and young girls – my story demonstrates that women are taking a leading role in Golf development.

CPG: Despite you only assuming the role this year, you must feel right in the thick of things as a leader of an organisation. What has that been like? What challenges and opportunities have you faced?

ML: There are challenges on a daily basis but I am starting to learn that that is a fact of the job. Being a young organisation too, there are also a lot of learnings in the way we operate and the way we do things but that is really a natural consequence and one we accept and try to make better next time. The growth we have seen makes it all worth it though. Being able to see more PGA Professionals join the organisation and more golfers learning to play the game is a fantastic feeling and only backs up the work that we do.

The pandemic obviously threw a curveball into the mix, as it did for everyone. We instantly went into a remote working environment and had to operate virtually, which was hard for all involved as we wanted to be out and about driving change and creating opportunity. However, this has emphasised to me and the team the importance of staying connected no matter what form that comes in and this has really become a more important team ethic we have adopted.

CPG: What inspires you?

ML: Working side-by-side in projects with other highly qualified specialists is a big one for me. The former General Secretary of UGF, Sergey Kozyrenko, and my scientific advisor Oksana Shinkaruk, give me a lot of experience and knowledge and I always strive to be like them. For example, I often ask myself what decisions did they make? How do they go about dealing with challenges? How do they conduct themselves? Things like that.

CPG: What advice would you give to those other PGAs who want to create a more inclusive and successful operation within their own organisation?

ML: Make a decision and stick by it but back it up with hard work and then even more hard work. That is the way to get things done. I also advocate building a team of professionals around you to support the mission. You cannot do everything yourself and it is the people around you that you lean on for things that make success happen. This can come from external sources of too and don’t be afraid to collaborate with other leaders. The UGF has been instrumental in the success we have had, and we could not do it without them. Embrace that notion.

CPG: Finally, what is next for you?

ML: I would really like to continue to improve my own golf game of course! Professionally, then I would lie to continue the research I did during my PhD and help grow the academic research and knowledge available for golf in Ukraine. If I continue to learn and develop myself as a person and as a professional, it will help me to better understand golf and the role of coaches. This knowledge will be useful for preparing education programs and teaching at the university in the future, and ultimately help continue the success that Ukraine is seeing long in to the future.

The members of the PGA of Germany have elected a new board. For the next three years, the PGA of Germany will be headed by Kariem Baraka as chairman and president.

The members of the PGA of Germany have elected a new board. For the next three years, the PGA of Germany will be headed by Kariem Baraka as chairman and president; the 43-year-old has been a member of the PGA of Germany since 2000 and is currently managing director of the GC München-Ried-hof. Baraka’s deputy on the PGA board is Oliver Neumann, and together with Ralf Pütter both form the executive board of the PGA of Germany. Anthony Lloyd, Marco Kaussler, Paul Dyer and Florian Fritsch serve as assessors.

“I am very happy to accept the election!”

The PGA of Germany has had a new board since September 19, 2021. During the general assembly, which was carried out online for the first time in the history of the association, the PGA of Germany members voted for Kariem Baraka as the new chairman and president. “I am very happy to accept the election and thank you for the trust you have placed in me and my colleagues,” said Baraka.

Until the 2008 season he played on the Challenge Tour and the European Tour, and in November 2007 he competed for Germany at the WGC World Cup in Spain and finished 7th together with Marcel Siem. Until 2013, Baraka worked for Langer Sport Marketing GmbH in action as tournament director of the Pro Golf Tour, since then the certified R&A Referee has been managing director of the Munich-Riedhof golf club. He has been a member of the PGA Board of Directors since 2018.

The new PGA Vice President ,Oliver Neumann, was born in 1974 and has been a member of the PGA Board of Directors since 2003, and is also a member of the PGA teaching team and the examination board of the PGA of Germany. He is the managing director of Tourbrassie GmbH and is based at GC Starnberg. Treasurer Ralf Pütter, 53, heads the golf school at Bochum GC and has been an assessor on the board of the PGA of Germany since 2008. Englishman Anthony Lloyd (GC Domain Niederreutin) has been a member of the PGA Board of Directors since 2018. Marco Kaussler (Munich), Paul Dyer (Eutin) and Florian Fritsch (Neckarge-münd) complete the management board of the PGA of Germany as newcomers.

With President Stefan Quirmbach, his Vice Guido Tillmanns and Treasurer Achim Lehnstaedt, the incumbent executive board of the PGA of Germany resigned from the Presidium on September 19, 2021 and no longer stood for re-election. “Every time we stood for election in the past 21 years, we carried forward new projects that were close to our hearts,” says Stefan Quirmbach. He sees the hiring of Rainer Goldrian as full-time managing director in 1994, the founding of the Aus und Fortbildungs ​​GmbH in 1996 under the management of Ines Halmburger and the founding of Professional Golf in 2004 as milestones in his presidency, which has lasted for more than two decades AG, which brought economic security and freedom of action for day-to-day business. “With the purchase of the EPD Tour at that time, today’s Pro Golf Tour, we committed ourselves to promoting professional tournament golf in 2005, and in 2012 we finally changed and modernized the structure of the training decisively,” said Quirmbach.

The PGA of Sweden has entered into an agreement with the municipality of Trelleborg for a new Swedish junior venture based on three legs, where a retake of the popular PGA Junior Pro Am is the big news.

After millions of investments the ‘PGA Junior Pro Am – the road to Trelleborg’, will be launched in 2022.

“We are doing this for the benefit of golf. Basically, it is about helping children and young people to grow as golfers and people” Johan Hampf, CEO, PGA of Sweden.

“Affects citizens across the board”

The competition is for juniors born after 2001 and consists of district and regional qualifiers before the Swedish final is played at Trelleborg Golf Club. The municipality has invested resources for something that affects citizens across the board; regardless of age, gender and physical ability. “The aim is to stimulate active leisure and everyday life, and this is part of that vision”, says Fredrik Geijer, Trelleborg municipality Director.

In addition, the series will showcase the municipality’s golf offerings and demonstrate its ability to host an event of this kind. There are three great golf courses in the municipality that have each received significant investment, and the Municipality sees golf as a way to strengthen our destination.

“Helping children and young people grow”

The Pro-Am format consists of juniors qualifying at clubs around Sweden. From there, they go to district qualifiers where they play together with their coach to reach the Swedish final. The final will then be played in Trelleborg in August.

“We are extremely happy to collaborate with Trelleborg Municipality. We share the vision of doing good things for society, achieved through the vehicle of golf” Johan Hampf added. “It is a perfect collaboration where we complement each other well, which enables really strong events to be delivered. The PGA Junior Pro Am is one of the most popular junior competitions but was unfortunately cancelled last year due to the pandemic. With this agreement we are breathing new life into the event. We do this for the benefit of golf, but it’s basically about helping children and young people grow as golfers and people.

In parallel with the competition, a junior development conference will also take place and the existing PGA Championship will be further developed.

On Thursday, 11 November, representatives from golf and beyond came together at Scotland’s Climate Ambition Zone in Glasgow to discuss several important issues around the sport and climate action.

After opening remarks from Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at Visit Scotland and Jonathan Smith, Executive Director, GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, event host David Garrido from Sky Sports teed off the discussion. In-studio guests joined virtual speakers from all areas of the game, including facilities, tournaments, developments and golf tourism.

The opening panel session sparked a wide-ranging discussion with Richard Holland, Director, Operations and Network Development with international NGO Wetlands International, Hugh Salway, Head of Markets with the Gold Standard and Kelli Jerome, Executive Director at GEO Foundation, joined virtually by Sam Barratt, Chief of the Youth, Education and Advocacy Unit in UNEP’s Ecosystems Division, Julie Duffus, Sustainability Senior Manager at the IOC from Lausanne, and, from Oslo, Suzann Pettersen, professional golfer and Sustainable Golf Champion who memorably holed the winning putt in the 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles.

This conversation covered several critical topics focused on how golf and society can come together to take meaningful action. Whether that’s protecting ecosystems and habitats in general, encouraging more athletes to get involved in advocacy or just doing one thing in your role to get the momentum started.

Suzann Pettersen spoke about her commitment to sustainability since retiring from the game, “I feel I’ve got an important role here. Sport is such a great arena to raise awareness. We inspire and influence so many millions of people every day.”

The following session focused on climate action by grassroots facilities at GEO Certified clubs in England, Finland and New Zealand with Jason O’Malley, Managing Director at Woburn Golf Club, Janne Lehto, Course Manager at Hirsala Golf Club and Spencer Cooper, Superintendent at Remuera Golf Club sharing insights into their journeys to reduce carbon emissions.

The large virtual audience then heard from golf tournaments and tours. This session began with comments from Alex Armas, CEO of the Ladies European Tour, and Mollie Marcoux Samaan, Commissioner of the LPGA Tour and how they are working together on shared goals. Philip Russell, Assistant Director of Sustainability at The R&A, outlined many practical examples of how the organization embraced sustainable tournament staging through initiatives such as The Open Water and increasing renewable energy use on-site.

Lee Spivak, Managing Principal, Sports and Entertainment at WM, sponsors of the WM Phoenix Open, shared a glimpse into the principles and practices which have resulted in the event becoming the first-ever to achieve GEO Certified status five times.

Further contributions came from Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament Business Officer of the European Tour and Chris Chandler, Head of Sports at Dow, who runs the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on the LPGA – also a GEO Certified tournament in the US.

The penultimate session honed in on manufacturing, tourism and golf development. This included Toro’s Andy Brown discussing electric mowers and sustainable irrigation. Jeremy Slessor at European Golf Design highlighted the importance of sustainable golf developments and their path to net zero, and Peter Walton, Founder and Chief Executive of IAGTO, provided insights into the world of golf tourism and carbon emissions.

A final discussion between Maggie Kim, CEO, The Gold Standard and GEO Foundation’s Jonathan Smith explored the importance of credible carbon mitigation. It showcased some of the sustainable golf tools available to the sport to help individuals and organizations take climate action.

The focus of EDUGOLF is skills development and education reform, but before the work on education and skills can begin it is vital to set the project on a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding about the current situation regarding golf in Europe and consider key issues for the future of golf. This is being facilitated through the research phase of the project.

Prior to the meeting, the partners completed a major desk research activity to input all relevant data from their country, including new types of facilities, skills requirements, and examples of successful interventions to grow the game. All submitted data was analysed by the lead research partner National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport (NUPPES).

The November meeting gave the opportunity to present key themes from the research findings so far and debate them with partners.

The group discussed the following issues in relation to the future of golf in Europe:

• What is the golf industry and how does it link to other sectors?
• Economic and social value of golf
• Evolution of the golf industry and what does it seek to achieve today and in the future?
• Types of organisations and operating models
• Occupations in the golf industry
• Key competences, skills and attributes
• Recruitment, training and progression

Key issues debated by the partners at the meeting included

• The need to recognise and support the volunteer workforce to grow the game and ensure a healthy future, including the new role of “activator”
• The impact and challenges related to Covid and how it affects the future of the game
• The benefit for the future of golf which could be derived through sharing education with other sports and other disciplines
• What skills are needed by professionals in golf in order to grow participation and widen the customer base for the future?

These issues will also be covered in the next phases of EDUGOLF research including a survey of golf organisations and interviews with golf employers.

The partners now look forward to using the solid research foundations to define standards and education for golf in Europe through the innovative outputs of the EDUGOLF project.

The European Tour group and DP World today jointly announced a ground-breaking evolution to their long-term partnership, with DP World becoming the new title sponsor of the group’s main tour from the start of the 2022 season.

The agreement heralds a new era in the history of the European Tour group, which, along with DP World, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022, the first season of the newly named DP World Tour.

Today’s announcement represents a significant deal in terms of global sports partnerships, with DP World’s substantial commitment dedicated to three key areas: elevating the Tour in every way, growing the game of golf globally, and driving positive community impact.

The new look DP World Tour will see total prize money break through the $200 million mark for the first time, with a new minimum prize fund of $2 million for all tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour.

In 2022, the DP World Tour will represent a truly global tour through an international schedule, that will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new tournaments in the UAE, Japan, South Africa and Belgium and an expanded Rolex Series comprising five events: the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The European Tour and DP World were both established in 1972 and have since developed into global enterprises with DP World, which is headquartered in Dubai, evolving into the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions.

DP World’s association with the European Tour spans more than a decade, first becoming a presenting partner of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates in its inaugural year in 2009, before the Rolex Series event was renamed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012. For the first time in the history of Ukrainian golf, golf coaches were trained in line with the Confederation of Professional Golf’s [CPG] international level 1 coach education program.

Together with the Ukrainian Golf Federation, the PGA of Ukraine (a CPG Member Country) coordinated and contributed to the delivery of the programme in collaboration with the CPG. Beginning in June online and culminating in a 5-day in-person workshop, students were involved in a number of different activities including theoretical classes and additional external learning. Each trainee also had access to the CPG Learning Institute, which contains training materials, assessments and deadlines to ensure high quality training and educational delivery for their personal development.

On October 24, the 5-day training at the H Club concluded. Led and managed by PGA of Holland members Jim van Heuven van Staereling and Wiebe Gisen, as well as the CPG’s Director for Community Coaching & Parents in Golf, David Kearney, the workshop was attended by 29 participants in total, consisting of both current and future coaches.

The training included theoretical, practical parts and assessment. For the first three days, there was a lot of tutor-led insight and information, alongside discussions and application. The trainees then focused on improving their own coaching delivery through the application of visual, kinesthetic and audio teaching aids; they studied the impact of ball flight laws; and also developed their coaching delivery skills for juniors, adults, beginners and more.

At the end of the 5 days, each participant was then assessed on various disciplines including golf clubs and technology, the rules of golf, and a group coaching lesson. Upon successful completion of the programme, each participant receives official certification of their Level 1 training.

Ruslan Harkavenko, President of PGA Ukraine, said, “Since my presidency at PGA Ukraine, the number one task has been to give every coach the opportunity to receive an international education. It took us two years to do this, first, it was the Parents in Golf training program and seminars for golf coaches and activators. And this year – Level 1 for coaches. I am grateful to my team for the organization. And most importantly, such training makes us and all members of the PGA even stronger as a team, as we learn to work together and help each other. Thank you to the CPG, all the tutors for their cooperation and impeccable work, as well as the management of H Club for the opportunity to conduct training on the golf courses.”

GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf will host a special event on 11th November, coinciding with the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, highlighting the roles golf can play in climate action and exploring the pathways to net-zero emissions. The aim is to facilitate an important conversation at a key point in time – with a view to raising awareness and inspiring accelerated action over the decade ahead.

Organized and facilitated by GEO Foundation, Driving for Net Zero will be streamed virtually from Scotland’s Climate Ambition Zone in Glasgow, and brings together leading experts from United Nations agencies and other climate action bodies with representatives and examples from across the sport of golf.

Jonathan Smith, Executive Director of GEO Foundation, said: “We are excited to be able to present this event live and coinciding with COP26, as global attention is on the critical topic of climate action. The programme brings expertize and diverse perspectives from around the world, across golf, sport and beyond. The event will emphasize why we need to act, explore what we can effectively do, highlight examples of leadership underway, and introduce new support and solutions developed to accelerate the movement.”

The Swiss PGA apprentice professionals met at Migros GolfPark Waldkirch this week to contest their annual championship for the national title. The week commenced with a pro-am followed by two days of stroke play.

The tournament itself comprises part of the Apprentices’ course; the third-year apprentices must oversee the running of the championship, including finding the venue, promoting the event, accumulating the prizemoney, determining the local rules and terms of competition, making the draws, and conducting the prize-giving.

Golf & Country Club Zurich first year apprentice, Ben Purshouse, led the field on Day 1 as the only player to break par in the trying autumn conditions. The course greenkeepers had presented the course in excellent condition and the unusually fast greens took some of the players by surprise. Purshouse himself commented: “I had many return putts of four feet or so – the ball just kept getting away from me.”

Temperatures dropped on the second and final day, with all players donning their warmest winter clothing. Overnight leader, Purshouse, struggled with the cold conditions early relinquishing his sub-par status back to the course. Meanwhile, his playing partner, local first-year apprentice, Adone Hepburn, who commenced the final round four strokes in arrears, found form and took advantage of his local knowledge. Carding the lowest round of the tournament, a three-under par 68, he took the Swiss PGA title at his first attempt. Purshouse managed to hang-on to second place with Graubunden second-year apprentice, Davide Albertini, tied for third with third-year Domaine Impérial apprentice, Edouard Amacher.
