Starting the third and final day with a four-stroke lead, and with likely challengers nowhere to be seen, Jon Evans (pictured) led all the way for victory by five strokes, with a final round 72 and a six-under total of 208.
On a slightly chillier day than for the second round, and with none of the 52 contestants breaking the par of 71, the Australian born golfer of English parents, who works in Germany, was left only with the problem …remembering the last time he enjoyed a victory !
It certainly tasted sweet this time despite a certain disappointment at visiting the water twice and allowing an even larger lead to slip away. “Because I play competitive golf very rarely these days I can’t recall when I last had a win,” he confessed.
“I’m certainly glad that Chris Guy, another pro who works in Germany, recommended this event to me….and that my brother Jason gave me a lesson at the range before the start.”
Closest challenger was another from a pair of siblings in the event, Duncan Muscroft, whose brother Richard finished down the field and whose father Hedley was a well-known UK pro around the 1950s.
Duncan’s putter has not been working at its best and several short ones went adrift in the first round, undermining what could have been a bid for the top prize. Like John Evans he shot 72 for one under par overall.
Others who could have made Evans battle harder for first prize such as Andrew McDonald and Janez Grilc suffered ‘a bad day at the office’, McDonald carding an 80 and Grilc an 81.
It was certainly a satisfying event for the Evans family, whose parents were from Mansfield UK, but emigrated to Australia before he was born. Jason, having sorted out his brother’s driving problems finished in sixth place.
The name Engdahl is beginning to make an impact on Confederation of Professional Golf-supported tournaments he being a past winner of the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am in Crete.
