The United States won the Junior Ryder Cup for the eighth time as they secured a five-point victory over Europe at Nassau Country Club in New York.

The Americans entered the final day singles matches with a two point lead after Wednesday’s four-balls at Nassau Country Club, and they drove home their home advantage with seven victories and one tie in 12 Thursday singles matches, triumphing 17 ½ to 12 ½.

Asterisk Talley provided the Americans with some early momentum after her 1 UP victory against Charlotte Naughton. Talley was 4 UP with five to play before England’s Naughton bounced back brilliantly to win holes 15,16 and 17 but came up just short of tying the match at the last.

French trio Hugo Le Goff, Oscar Couilleau and Sara Brentcheneff provided some hope for Europe after coming out on top against Miles Russell, Tyler Mawhinney and Amelie Zalsman respectively, however the Americans quickly restored their advantage as Anna Fang defeated Spain’s Nagore Martinez 5&3.

England’s Kris Kim and Giuseppe Puebla tied their match before the Americans took control as Zoe Cusack defeated Denmark’s Benedicte Brent-Petersen 4&3, Lunden Esterline beat France’s Callixte Alzas 3&2, Lily Peng defeated Alice Kong 1 UP and Hamilton Coleman came out on top against John Doyle 2&1.

Rayee Feng defeated Louise Uma Landgraf 4&3 to seal victory for the United States and regain the Junior Ryder Cup for the first time since 2018.

In the final match to finish on the course, Ukraine’s Lev Grinberg came out on top against Luke Colton with a 4&3 victory.

European Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher was proud of his team despite defeat on American soil and believes the future is bright for European golf.

“I’m very proud of my team,” he said. “They fought extremely hard until the end, and they are not only fantastic golfers but also fantastic human beings. Their body language, commitment to the team from every one of them was so professional.

“They are all fantastic players, and they could have gone out in any order today. The sky is the limit with all of them, and they have the talent, it is now just down to how much they want it. I’m sure they will be winning on the DP World Tour and Ladies European Tour before we know it.”

United States Junior Ryder Cup Captain Suzy Whaley said: “We were down first thing this morning for a long time, and these kids just fought so hard and they got the job done. They saw a sea of blue on the leaderboard and knew exactly where they stood. They showed grit, perseverance and did not give up.

“Being a captain of a team holds a lot of responsibility, but it wasn’t just me, This was a team effort for Team USA to bring that Cup home and set the tone for tomorrow’s Ryder Cup, and that’s exactly what we did.”

The United States will take a two-point lead over Europe into the final day single matches at the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup in New York.

The two teams – comprising 12 of the best male and female junior players from each of Europe and the United States – are currently 10-8 in favour of the United States after the second day mixed four-ball matches at Nassau Country Club.

The Americans, who entered the second day with a one point advantage, made the perfect start to the four-balls when Asterisk Talley and Miles Russell and overcame French duo Hugo Le Goff and Sara Brentcheneff 2&1 in the first match, before Zoe Cusack and Lunden Esterline also defeated English pair Charlotte Naughton and Kris Kim 2&1.

Europe fought back as Spaniard Nagore Martinez and Frenchman Callixte Alzas defeated Rayee Feng and Hamilton Coleman 3&2, before the United States increased their lead as Lily Peng and Giuseppe Puebla overcame Alice Kong from France and Ukraine’s Lev Grinberg 4&2.

Team Europe showed incredible fight as Denmark’s Benedicte Brent-Petersen and Ireland’s John Doyle birdied their final two holes to defeat Amelie Zalsman and Tyler Mawhinney 2 UP before French pair Louise Uma Landgraf and Oscar Couilleau came from behind to secure ½ a point against Anna Fang and Luke Colton.

Team Europe Captain Stephen Gallacher said: “There was some fantastic golf today. We’re watching the best 24 kids in the world, and I was delighted with the last few holes today. We saw a big shift in our favour, and we are only two points back ahead of the single matches, where anything can happen.

“The fighting spirit of my team has been unbelievable. This is a proper American golf course which my team won’t be used to and half of them have never played mixed four-balls. There is spirit and confidence to take on new shots and trust themselves. The greens out here are extremely firm, and they are up against class opposition. The attitude has been fantastic, and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

The final day single matches were due to be played at Bethpage Black tomorrow, however due to the forecast of inclement weather they will now be contested at Nassau Country Club.

Team Europe will need to reach 15 points in order to retain the Junior Ryder Cup and lift the trophy on American soil for the first time since 2004.

“There’s a chance to re-write history tomorrow, we’ve not won away for over 20 years, and we’re going to try and do it for the Continent,” said Gallacher.

“I think it’s fantastic that we can still play the final day single matches here tomorrow. This golf course is fantastic, and it can certainly hold the rain if it does come. It’s obviously a shame that we’re not going to play Bethpage but logistically it would be very difficult and hard to finish if we did get any delays.”

The decisive single matches will begin tomorrow at 8:00am local time at Nassau Country Club, on the eve of the 45th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

“Lock-In” is the phrase of the week for the United States Junior Ryder Cup Team according to Team Captain and PGA Master Professional Suzy Whaley, and that’s exactly what the 12-person, co-ed U.S. team needed to do to take a 6 ½ to 5 ½ point lead following today’s morning and afternoon matches.

The U.S. got off to a hot start in morning foursomes at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York, led by U.S. top-ranked girls’ junior Asterisk Talley and teammate Amelie Zalsman, jumping to a 5-up lead through seven holes.

Following a brief run from Team Europe’s Sara Brentcheneff and Benedicte Brent-Peterson, winning holes 8, 10 and 11, Talley and Zalsman closed the first match of the Junior Ryder Cup with a 4 & 3 victory with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole.

“It’s great to get off to a good start (in match play) because you don’t want to have to battle back the whole time,” Asterisk said.

When the U.S. won their morning matches, they won by a large margin. Following the lead of Talley and Zalsman, partners Anna Fang and Lily Peng won their morning match against Europe’s Charlotte Naughton and Alice Kong 6 & 4. In the following group, Frisco, Texas, resident Luke Colton and Giuseppe Puebla of Royal Palm Beach, Fla. also won 6 & 4 against Europe’s Callixte Alzas and Lev Grinberg.

The Americans took control of this match early, making the turn at 4-up, fueled by an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole. Colton hit his approach to eight feet to set up Puebla to drain the putt for eagle.

“Giuseppe ripped a drive like 350 (yards) down there and I hit it where I was aiming and it ended up being eight feet away,” Colton said. “That felt really big because (Europe) hit it close for birdie. Giuseppe made just about every putt out there and I think that got the match going. We were on fire after that.”

Even after a hot start and three commanding wins in the morning session from the U.S., Team Europe did not falter.

French duo Hugo Le Goff and Oscar Couilleau set the tone for Europe, defeating U.S. top-ranked junior Miles Russell and Vanderbilt commit Tyler Mawhinney 3 & 2.

“I’ve known Oscar since I was 7 years-old,” Le Goff said. “We used to play together quite a few times and we always play well together. It felt good to win the first point for Europe.”

Behind 3 points to 1, Europe flipped the momentum by winning the final two matches. Nagore Martinez and Louise Uma Landgraf won 3 & 2 over Zoe Cusack and Rayee Feng and in the last match of the morning, John Doyle and Kris Kim won 1-up on 18 over Hamilton Coleman and Lunden Esterline.

At 3 points aside, the afternoon mixed foursome matches continued to be tight and included multiple 4-hole swings from both teams.

The U.S. sent out their star players with top-ranked Russell and Talley facing French teammates Brentcheneff and Le Goff.

Russell and Talley jumped to a quick lead, reaching 4-up through 8 holes, and then the Europeans started crawling back. Through 14 holes they inched to 3-down, then proceeded to win holes 15 and 16 to get within one. Le Goff holed a 7-foot putt on 17 to extend the match to 18, where Le Goff again holed a match-tying birdie to split the point.

“It just shows you that on this course, you can never count your chickens,” European Captain Stephen Gallacher said. “We saw two 4-up matches (this afternoon) that didn’t win. You don’t normally see that. This course, you’ve got to be on it all the time. You’ve got to hit great shots.”

The other 4-hole swing match came in favor of the Americans, when 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion Coleman and New Jersey native Feng were 4-down through seven.

Hamilton and Feng won holes 8 and 9, with a par and an eagle, respectively, and then really turned it on by winning four of the last six holes.

With the match tied going into 18, Feng hit her approach to 10 feet, setting Hamilton up to sink the putt and claim the 1-up victory with a birdie.

“That was about every emotion you could feel on the golf course, in one round,” Hamilton said. “It would have been easy to give up, but we stuck with it.”

“I grabbed my putter, but kept the cover on because I had faith in him,” Feng said of Hamilton’s birdie putt on 18. “Towards the end we really pulled it together. We’re pretty great as a team.”

Hamilton’s birdie wasn’t the only U.S. match winner on 18. Colton and his afternoon partner Fang of San Diego were tied with Brent-Peterson and Couilleau going into the last hole. Fang’s approach left an up-hill, 7-foot birdie opportunity that Colton drained.

Also earning a crucial afternoon-session point for the U.S., with a little more breathing room, was Cusack and Boys’ Junior PGA Champion Esterline, winning 6 & 4 over Alice Kong of France and John Doyle of Ireland.

Full-point earners for Europe were Nagore Martinez and Alzas, defeating Peng and Puebla 3 & 2, while Charlotte Naughton and Kris Kim won 2 & 1 over Zalsman and Mawhinney.

With the U.S. Team’s slim lead going into Wednesday at Nassau, Whaley’s “lock-in” phrase for her team will continue.

“The phrase is actually Asterisk’s. That’s her phrase for when she really wants to play great golf,” Whaley said. “I think they all locked-in today. For me, locking in means every time you hit a shot, I want you focused. At the end of the day, we came out slightly ahead but I’m here to tell you we’re going to start over tomorrow. We’re going to lock-in.”

As the world’s eyes turn to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, golf’s future stars will be competing in their own international showcase Sept. 23-25, at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black, for the 13th Junior Ryder Cup presented by HPE.

Captained by PGA of America Past President and PGA Master Professional Suzy Whaley, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team features six boys and six girls who are U.S. citizens and members of the high school graduating class of 2026 or younger. The U.S. will look to re-claim the Junior Ryder Cup aided by two of the top-ranked junior golfers in America: Stanford University commit Asterisk Talley, 16, and Florida State University commit Miles Russell, 16.

Additionally, the U.S. team boasts six of the top-10-ranked boys and four of the top-10 girls in the AJGA rankings, including 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur champion and University of Georgia commit Hamilton Coleman, 17, of Augusta, Georgia, and Anna Fang, 16, of San Diego, who will join Talley as a Stanford Cardinal in the Class of 2027.

Team Europe, once again led by four-time DP World Tour winner Stephen Gallacher, a member of the victorious 2014 European Ryder Cup team, comes to New York defending its title with two returning players: Ukraine’s Lev Grinberg, 17, and England’s Kris Kim, 17. Half of the team is from France, including top-ranked U18 European Amateur Callixte Alzas, 17, who sits second on the European Amateur Golf Rankings. French native Sara Brentcheneff, 18, is also the second-ranked amateur on the European Girls’ Amateur ranking and 37th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

The U.S. Team looks to rebound from their 20 ½ – 9 ½ loss two years ago at Golf Nazionale & Marco Simone in Rome in 2023, which broke a U.S. win streak of six consecutive Junior Ryder Cups between 2008 and 2018.

As the sole returning player for the U.S., Russell will add some veteran experience and hopes to share some wisdom with his teammates.

“Rome showed me how big the stage feels, so this time I know what to expect,” said Russell, the 13th-ranked amateur in the world. “My focus is on helping my teammates stay relaxed, enjoy it and play their best.”

Russell is no stranger to playing in front of crowds with a Junior Ryder Cup and four PGA TOUR events under his belt, including the recent Procore Championship, which included the majority of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team in the field.

But when it comes to representing your country, the experience changes.

“Playing for the red, white and blue is just different,” the 2025 Junior Players champion explained. “You feel the pride and it makes you want to give everything for your team and country.”

As a PGA Master Professional and LPGA Coach, and the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for a PGA TOUR event (2003 Greater Harford Open), Captain Whaley knows how to prepare her team for the pressure they will experience, especially come Thursday, Sept. 25, when the Junior Ryder Cup singles matches will take place at Bethpage Black in front of tens of thousands of fans. A stalwart in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers in America” list, she also knows her role.

“I can provide the awareness of how to bring a team together, how to make sure we have a culture of respect, grit and perseverance.”

Unlike the Ryder Cup, playing at home hasn’t always provided the upper hand. In the U.S. team’s 7-4-1 record, four of its victories came abroad, including the inaugural event in 1997 at Alcaidesa Links Golf Course in Cadiz, Spain. The others came during the 2008-18 win streak. During Europe’s three-match win streak (1999, 2002, ‘04), two of those victories were in America.

With “home-course advantage” not a factor, Whaley’s preparation has been focused on getting the best out of her team, even before they arrive in New York. She went on a fact-finding mission, watching most of the team compete at the Junior PGA Championships in August and making pre-event phone calls, learning what motivates them and what builds their confidence mid-round.

“Now during a match when I can sense there’s some nerves, I can remind them of the things they previously shared with me that aren’t mine, but that are their own.”

Whaley will also aim to create a week they can build on for the rest of their playing careers.

“I want them to make incredible relationships with the European team. Some of these players may end up playing together in college or on the professional tours. But even more than that, it gives them a stepping stone. Once you’ve played in front of 40,000 people and on the first tee of the Ryder Cup, that first big college event or first Korn Ferry Tour or Epson Tour event might just feel a little bit easier.”

Following the Junior Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony on Monday, Sept. 22, at Nassau Country Club, play will begin Tuesday with morning foursome matches and mixed foursome matches in the afternoon. Day two will feature mixed four-ball matches at Nassau CC, before they play singles at Bethpage Black Thursday.

Their matches at Bethpage mark the first time a U.S. Ryder Cup venue will host the Junior Ryder Cup singles matches on the eve of the Ryder Cup.

The Junior Ryder Cup offers a thrilling international preview of the future of professional golf. Junior Ryder Cup alumni include current Ryder Cup players Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns and Cameron Young for the U.S., and Rory McIlroy and Rasmus Højgaard for the Europeans. Other Junior Ryder Cup veterans include Solheim Cup players and LPGA Tour professionals Lexi Thompson, Alison Lee, Emily Kristine Pedersen, Leona Maguire and more.

“The Junior Ryder Cup can be a springboard for the rest of your playing career,” Whaley added. “Every single player, girl and boy, can look to that as a goal and can realize the number-one player in the world was once in their shoes.”

Ryder Cup Europe and the European Golf Association have today confirmed the selection process for the 2025 European Junior Ryder Cup team

Six boys and six girls will take on the United States in New York from September 23-25, 2025, with the first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup being played at Nassau Country Club before the decisive singles matches are held at Bethpage Black, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 45th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

Three boys and three girls will earn a place on the European Junior Ryder Cup team through a season-long ranking system, which has been organised by the European Golf Association, while the remaining six players will be selected by Stephen Gallacher, the European Junior Ryder Cup Captain.

Players will earn points for the Rankings based on their finishing position in selected elite amateur events in 2025 and these points will be allocated using the World Amateur Golf Ranking system. The qualification process will end following The R&A Girls’ and Boys’ Amateur Championships on August 16, 2025.

“I would encourage these talented players to try and qualify because after watching our team play in Rome last year on the same course as the Ryder Cup, it was a special opportunity and a lifetime experience,” said Gallacher.

“These kids will make memories and learn a lot about themselves as golfers. For me it’s a great viewing platform to watch these talented young players and a huge honour for me to be Captain.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to some events during the year and working with the most exciting future talent in Europe once again.”

Boys and girls will have the chance to compete in up to nine tournaments during the season to score points and the total of each player’s four highest point scores will count towards their final tally on the Rankings.

Players are not required to sign up to be included in the Rankings, or to play in a minimum number of events to be considered for selection. Eligible players competing in the counting events will automatically be included in the Rankings.

Boys and girls who are citizens of a European country as defined by the International Golf Federation’s Nationality Policy by no later than January 1, 2025, under 18 years of age on January 1, 2025, have not represented a non-European country in an international golf competition during 2025, and who are not enrolled at, or committed to attend, a college in the USA during 2025 are eligible to participate in the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup.

The Junior Ryder Cup has produced a plethora of golfing stars and once again in 2025 the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the USA go head-to-head in the mixed event.

Rory McIlroy, Nicolai Højgaard and Nicolas Colsaerts, the 2023 European Ryder Cup Vice-Captain, all triumphed in the junior event before also winning the Ryder Cup, while Suzanne Peterson, Carlota Ciganda and Emily Kristine Pedersen succeeded as amateurs before lifting the Solheim Cup.

The four-time DP World Tour winner returns to the role having led Europe to a record 20½ – 9½ victory against the United States in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy, last year.

Six boys and six girls will take on the US Team in New York from September 23-25, 2025, with the first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup being played at Nassau Country Club before the decisive singles matches are held at Bethpage Black, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 45th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

The Scot ended a run of six straight defeats for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup as they secured a European record 11-point victory in Rome last year, and he will now aim to become the third Captain to lead Europe to victories both home and away, following Macarena Campomanes and Andy Ingram in 2002 and 2006 respectively.

“I’m delighted to have been given the chance to once again lead Team Europe in the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup in New York,” said Gallacher. “It was fantastic to oversee Europe’s record victory in Rome last year and I was so proud of the team and what they managed to achieve.

“The team spirit was unbelievable, and it is an honour to be their Captain once again. I’m looking forward to working with the most exciting future talent in Europe and taking on the United States in New York.

“The Ryder Cup means so much to me, so to be the Junior Captain again and have the chance to create bonds with the 12 players, like we did in Italy, will be very special.

“Being a Captain away from home will be a tough task, but it is a challenge that motivates me, and I will do everything I can to make sure our 12-strong team will be ready to head to New York in 2025.”

The Junior Ryder Cup has produced a plethora of golfing stars and once again in 2025 the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the USA will go head-to-head in the mixed event.

English amateur Kris Kim starred in Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup victory in Italy and earlier this year made history as the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event for 11 years when he made the weekend at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson aged just 16.

Helen Briem was also part of Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup winning team last year, and the German amateur made history earlier this month by becoming the first player to win three consecutive LET Access Series titles after triumphs at the Montauban Ladies Open, Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge and Santander Golf Tour-Avila.

Gallacher was part of the European team that defeated the United States to retain the Ryder Cup in 2014, winning 16½ to 11½ at Gleneagles, and boasts an impressive individual playing career with four victories on the DP World Tour.

He has also set up the Stephen Gallacher Foundation to help and encourage junior golfers in Scotland and he will again lead the European junior team as he continues to inspire the next generation of golfers.

Europe ended a run of six straight defeats in the Junior Ryder Cup as they secured a team record 11-point victory over the United States at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.

Team Europe entered the final day singles matches with a six point lead after a remarkable clean sweep in Wednesday’s four-balls at Golf Nazionale, and they drove home their home advantage with seven victories and three ties in 12 Thursday singles matches at this year’s Ryder Cup venue, triumphing 20 ½ to 9 ½.

Germany’s Helen Briem provided the Europeans with some early momentum after her 2&1 win over Yana Wilson, before Kris Kim defeated Miles Russell 5&4 to extend Europe’s advantage.

Spaniard Andrea Revuelta holed the winning putt to seal outright victory for Team Europe for the first time since 2004 when they won the trophy on American soil at Westfield Group Country Club in Ohio.

Scotland’s Conor Graham overcame American Jay Leng Jr 1 UP, while Swede Meja Örtengren defeated Gianna Clemente 3&2. Irishman Sean Keeling and Italian Giovanni Binaghi provided the two other European victories.

In the final match to finish on the course, Italy’s Francesca Fiorellini provided a moment of magic on the 18th green as she came back from 2 DOWN with two holes to play, holing a putt from 25 feet to tie the match in front of a raucous home crowd.

European Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher was delighted to bring home the trophy for his side and believes the future is bright for European golf.

“It feels absolutely amazing,” he said. “I am so proud of this team and what they have achieved. The team spirit has been unbelievable, and it has been a privilege to be their Captain.

“Every player took control of their own game and they’ve done everything I could have asked of them. The standard of golf has blown me away and it has been inspiring to watch. We are looking at future Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup stars.

“The kids have been fantastic and the way they bounced back at times was sensational. I’ve been blessed to have a front row seat and it’s been an honour just to watch them play. Some of these boys and girls will be future World Number Ones for sure.

“The standard and the talent out there is unreal and the future is bright for Europe. They have all been superstars. The way they dealt with the pressure of playing in this arena has been exceptional and I think our team wanted it a bit more today.”

The two teams – comprising 12 of the best male and female junior players from each of Europe and the United States – entered the second day tied at 6-6, before the home side took control, winning all six four-ball matches at Golf Nazionale in Rome.

The Europeans made the perfect start to the four-balls when Spaniard Rocio Tejedo and Scotland’s Connor Graham overcame American twins Anna and Billy Davis 3&2 in the first match, before Sweden’s Meja Örtengren and Englishman Kris Kim also defeated Yana Wilson and Miles Russell 3&2.

Europe extended their lead with German duo Helen Briem and Peer Wernicke securing a 2&1 triumph over Leigh Chien and Nicholas Gross, followed by Italians Francesca Fiorellini and Giovanni Binaghi’s impressive 4&3 victory against Kylie Chong and Jay Leng Jr.

Team Europe continued to dominate as Spain’s Andrea Revuelta and Ukrainian Lev Grinberg overcame Ryleigh Knaub and Jackson Byrd 1 UP before Sweden’s Nora Sundberg and Ireland’s Sean Keeling defeated Gianna Clemente and Will Hartman 3&1 to make it six from six for Stephen Gallacher’s team.

“It was awesome,” said Gallacher. “We came out firing and took control of the session from the word go. We took a hit yesterday afternoon and I knew they wanted to bounce back today. The team spirit yesterday evening was terrific and I’m so proud of all of them.

“Every player took control of their own game and they’ve done everything I could have asked of them. They were playing their own ball today which helped them play their own game.

“There are still 12 points left to play for and anything can happen. It’s important not to get complacent and we need to just focus on winning the session.

“I’m having an amazing time as Captain. The standard of golf is phenomenal, and I think seven under par was our lowest score today which is amazing to see. I’m seeing so many good shots that it is inspiring.”

U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Captain Paul Levy is hoping his team can bounce back tomorrow, with the Americans needing to recover the six-point deficit to retain the trophy.

“I’ve seen a lot of Ryder Cup competitions in my time and today we got beat emphatically,” he said. “They played exceptionally, and we didn’t put the ball in the hole quick enough.

“Tomorrow, we need to win nine of the 12 points to retain the Junior Ryder Cup and we’re going to have to dig deep and see if we can keep that cup.

“My boys and girls have heart. They’re going to go out there and be competitive. I’m hoping something very special can happen at Marco Simone.”

The decisive single matches will begin tomorrow at 7:30am local time at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 44th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

Europe and the United States are tied on six points each heading into the second day of the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup after a thrilling first day of the biennial event at Golf Nazionale in Rome, which included a sensational fightback from Scotland’s Connor Graham and Ireland’s Sean Keeling.

In a change to the previous format, the Junior Ryder Cup will now take place over three days instead of two with Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue, hosting the decisive singles matches for the first time on Thursday. The final day will also be broadcast live on television.

The three-day tournament, featuring two teams of 12 of the best male and female junior players from Europe and the United States, began this morning in the Italian capital with foursomes – which saw Europe take a 4-2 lead – followed by mixed foursomes in the afternoon.

After a strong start from the Americans girls which saw Gianna Clemente and Yana Wilson grab the first point of the day with a 2&1 win over Spaniards Rocio Tejedo and Andrea Revuelta, the European girls fought back with German Helen Briem and Italian Francesca Fiorellini defeating Ryleigh Knaub and Kylie Chong 5&4 to earn Europe’s first point of the tournament.

The U.S. boys pairing of Jay Leng Jr. and Billy Davis looked to have secured another point for their team, jumping into a commanding 6 UP lead after nine holes in their match against Graham and Keeling, however the European duo bounced back heroically to tie the match.

In a toe-to-toe match Swedish duo Nora Sundberg and Meja Örtengren were level with Americans Anna Davis and Leigh Chien heading down the last, before the Europeans won the final hole to claim a 1 UP triumph.

Elsewhere Ukrainian Lev Grinberg and Englishman Kris Kim tied with Jackson Byrd and Will Hartman, while German Peer Wernicke and Italian Giovanni Binaghi overcame Miles Russell and Nicholas Gross 1 UP.

“It was a day of two halves,” said European Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher. “The foursome play is always so close and it difficult for the players to find a rhythm. To end the day in a tie is a good and fair result, I felt we edged the morning session, and they were the better team in the afternoon.

“I’m so proud of all of my team, especially Sean and Connor this morning who refused to give in and showed incredible courage to come back from six down at the turn. It was evident that we won the morning session because of their score and the rest of the team fed of that energy.

“We have a great harmony in the group, and I could have paired anyone with anyone. Honours are even and we will try and win the two sessions tomorrow.

“Everyone is playing their own ball tomorrow and they will feel more comfortable with that so I am looking forward to another good day.”

During the afternoon mixed foursome sessions, the Europeans started brightly with a commanding 3&1 victory from Örtengren and Kim over Clemente and Byrd before the Americans mounted an impressive comeback from twins Anna Davis and Billy Davis – who birdied two of their three closing holes to tie with Tejedo and Graham.

Revuelta and Grinberg tied the third match with Chong + Jay Leng Jr, before the Americans sealed three consecutive victories from Wilson and Russell, Chien and Gross, plus Knaub and Hartman which meant the teams will enter the second day level on points.

“The whole day was close throughout and I think to finish six points each is a fair score,” said U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Captain Paul Levy. “A few things went the way of the Europeans in the morning and a few things went our way in the afternoon.

“We showed some great fighting spirit to bring the matches even and we never gave up. We stayed focus, made our putts and we are looking to carry that momentum into tomorrow.”

Tomorrow’s four-ball matches, featuring all 24 players, will begin at 10:45am local time.

In a change to the previous format, the Junior Ryder Cup will now take place over three days instead of two with Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue, hosting the decisive singles matches for the first time, which will also be broadcast live on television.

Golf Nazionale, which hosted the Italian Challenge Open earlier this year, will be the venue for the first two days of foursomes and fourballs between male and female juniors from Europe and the United States, on Tuesday September 26 and Wednesday September 27. The competition will then move to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club on Thursday September 28, the day before the venue hosts the Ryder Cup itself, providing an exciting curtain-raiser to golf’s greatest team contest.

The 2023 European Junior Ryder Cup Team, captained by 2014 Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher, consists of six boys and six girls.

European Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher has unveiled his 12-strong team to take on the United States in Rome from September 26-28, 2023.

The six automatic qualifiers comprise three boys – Englishman Kris Kim, Ireland’s Sean Keeling and Germany’s Peer Wernicke – and three girls – Spain’s Rocio Tejedo, Swede Meja Örtengren and Germany’s Helen Briem. The automatic qualifiers earned their place on the European Junior Ryder Cup team through a season-long ranking system, which was organised by the European Golf Association.

Six players were then selected by Gallacher: Scotland’s Connor Graham, Ukraine’s Lev Grinberg and Italian Giovanni Binaghi for the boys, while Sweden’s Nora Sundberg, Spain’s Andrea Revuelta Goicoechea and Italian Francesca Fiorellini were selected for the girls.

Gallacher said: “I would like to congratulate the players selected to represent Europe in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup. They have all performed brilliantly over the past year and their selection is fully justified.

“I’ve been to several of the qualification events this year and I’ve been blown away by the standard of golf on show. We’ve got a very strong team and it is going to be a fiercely contested tournament against the United States.

“It is a tremendous honour to be their Captain and I am looking forward to working with and showcasing the most exciting future talent in Europe.

“We are relishing the prospect of taking on the United States in Rome and playing the final day single matches at Marco Simone will be a memorable experience for both sets of players.”

Kim, winner of the recent 96th Boys’ Amateur Championship at Ganton, topped the male Junior Ryder Cup Order of Merit to secure his place in Rome, and he will be joined by Keeling who finished second on the rankings.

Keeling finished third at the Portuguese International Amateur Championship, before reaching the third round of matches in the Spanish Amateur Championship.

The third and final automatic qualification spot was taken by Wernicke after an impressive campaign which included a third place finish at the Spanish International Amateur and a runner-up finish at the German Boys Open.

For the girls, Tejedo topped the Order of Merit thanks to a sensational season, which included two victories at the Portuguese International Ladies’ Amateur Championship and German Girls Open. Tejedo also secured a runner up finish at the recent European Girls’ Team Championship, in addition to third place finishes at the Spanish International Amateur Championship and French International Girls Championship.

Tejedo, currently sitting third in the European Golf Rankings and 37th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, will be joined in Rome by her fellow automatic qualifiers, Örtengren and Briem.

Örtengren has tasted success twice in 2023, firstly winning the French International Girls Championship before adding the European Ladies’ Team Championship in Finland, whilst Briem became the first German to win The R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship in its 104-year history to secure the final automatic qualification spot.

Gallacher then selected the talented trio of Graham, winner of the recent European Men’s Team Championships in Slovakia, Grinberg and Binaghi.

Grinberg, at the 2022 Soudal Open in Belgium, became the second-youngest player to make a cut in the DP World Tour’s history at the age of 14.

He also picked Sundberg who won the Spanish International Amateur Championship and the European Girls’ Team Championship earlier this year, Goicoechea who finished second in the French International Girls Championship, and Fiorellini, meaning there will be two Italians taking part in the Junior Ryder Cup on the eve of the country hosting the Ryder Cup itself for the first time.

The first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup will be played at Golf Nazionale before the decisive singles matches are held at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 44th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

Stephen Gallacher will captain Team Europe at the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup, while Ryder Cup Europe and the European Golf Association have today confirmed the selection process for the European junior team.

The Scot, a four-time DP World Tour winner, was part of the European team that defeated the United States to retain the Ryder Cup in 2014, winning 16 1/2 to 11 1/2 at Gleneagles Hotel.

Six boys and six girls will take on the USA in Rome from September 26-28, 2023, with the first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup being played at Golf Nazionale before the decisive singles matches are held at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 44th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

Three boys and three girls will earn a place on the European Junior Ryder Cup team through a season-long ranking system, which has been organised by the European Golf Association, while the remaining six players will be selected by Gallacher, the European Junior Ryder Cup Captain.

The Scot set up the Stephen Gallacher Foundation to help and encourage junior golfers in Scotland and he will now lead the European junior team in Rome as he continues to inspire the next generation of golfers.

“I am absolutely delighted to be named Junior European Ryder Cup Captain for 2023,” said Gallacher. “It’s a privilege to be able to lead a team of the best juniors in Europe against America in Rome.

“Playing the final day at Marco Simone will be a fantastic experience for our players who get the opportunity to compete in front of Ryder Cup crowds on the Ryder Cup course for the first time.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to some events during the year and working with the most exciting future talent in Europe.”

Players will earn points for the Rankings based on their finishing position in selected elite amateur events in 2023 and these points will be allocated using the World Amateur Golf Ranking system. The qualification process will end following The R&A Girls’ and Boys’ Amateur Championships on August 20, 2023.

Boys and girls who are citizens of a European country as defined by the International Golf Federation’s Nationality Policy, under 18 years of age on January 1, 2023, and who are not enrolled to play college golf in USA during 2023 are eligible to participate in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup.

The Junior Ryder Cup has produced a plethora of golfing stars and once again in 2023 the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the USA go head-to-head in the mixed event.

Rory McIlroy and Nicolas Colsaerts, the recently-appointed European Ryder Cup Vice-Captain, both triumphed in the event before also winning The Ryder Cup, while Suzanne Peterson and Carlota Ciganda both succeeded as amateurs before lifting the Solheim Cup.

– Final day of the Junior Ryder Cup to be held at Ryder Cup host venue for the first time
– New format introduced for 2023, with the first two days taking place at Golf Nazionale
– Singles matches to be held at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Ryder Cup Europe today announced that the final day of the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup will be played at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, in Rome, on the eve of the Ryder Cup.

In a change to the previous format, the Junior Ryder Cup will now take place over three days instead of two, with the Ryder Cup venue hosting the decisive singles matches for the first time.

Golf Nazionale, which hosted the Italian Challenge Open earlier this year, will be the venue for the first two days of foursomes and fourballs between male and female juniors from Europe and the United States on Tuesday September 26 and Wednesday September 27.

The competition will then move to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club on Thursday September 28, the day before the venue hosts the Ryder Cup itself, providing an exciting curtain-raiser to golf’s greatest team contest.

Edward Kitson, the Ryder Cup Match Director, said: “Playing the Junior Ryder Cup singles matches at Marco Simone will be a fantastic experience for the 24 players who get the opportunity to compete in front of Ryder Cup crowds on the Ryder Cup course.

“It will also be another great spectacle for the fans who will be able to see some of the most exciting future talent in action, alongside the final practice day for the Ryder Cup followed by the opening ceremony which includes the announcement of the first day pairings.”

The Junior Ryder Cup features the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the United States in a head-to-head mixed event, with both teams comprising of six boys and six girls.

Past Junior Ryder Cup players include Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas – all of whom have gone on to become World Number One and Major Champions in the men’s game – as well as women’s Major winners Suzann Pettersen and Lexi Thompson. In all, 23 Junior Ryder Cup participants have subsequently represented their continents in either the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup.

Both the European and United States Junior Ryder Cup teams will feature six boys and six girls who must not have turned 18 before January 1, 2023 and must not be enrolled to play college golf in the USA during 2023.

In 2018 at Golf Disneyland Paris, Europe narrowly missed out on a first victory since 2006, as Team USA triumphed 12 ½ – 11 ½. The 2020 edition of the Junior Ryder Cup was cancelled due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Qualification process and Captains for both the European and American Junior Ryder Cup teams will be announced shortly.

European Tour winner Renato Paratore has paid a special visit to Disneyland Paris® to launch the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup.

The 20 year old, twice a Junior Ryder Cup player in 2012 and 2014, arrived at the world-famous venue in time to hit a spectacular tee shot down the park’s Main Street U.S.A.

[fb_plugin video href=https://www.facebook.com/RCTrust/videos/1042297035906075/]

For the first time, on 24-25 September 2018, Golf Disneyland will play host to the tournament, which is a celebration of the development work undertaken at grassroots level on both sides of the Atlantic.

The venue, located east of the French capital on the grounds of Disneyland Paris®, will add to the family-orientated atmosphere of the tournament which was established as an international showcase for golf’s next generation.

The site offers a prestigious Championship golf course, which has already proven its pedigree by hosting major events, including a European Challenge Tour tournament back in 1993. In 2011 Golf Disneyland also hosted another Challenge Tour event, the Challenge de France.

The resort has outstanding support facilities and is situated 60 kilometres from Le Golf National, the host venue of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Like The Ryder Cup, the Junior Ryder Cup is a biennial contest between Europe and America, but with each team consisting of six boys and six girls under the age of 18.

Paratore, who became the youngest winner on the European Tour for four seasons when he triumphed at the Nordea Masters last month, has gone from competing in the Junior Ryder Cup to the top of the professional game in just three years.

Having made such a sharp rise since joining the paid ranks, the Italian acknowledges the role the Junior Ryder Cup played in his transition from promising amateur to European Tour champion.

“It was a great experience for me,” he said. “To have the opportunity to represent Europe and to play against some of the leading players in the world when I was a teenager was brilliant.

“To play in such a big tournament at an early age and to be selected twice as well, really prepared me for the type of challenges I would face when I turned professional.

“I have lots of good memories of Disneyland Paris too. I came here with my mother when I was a child, but I’ve also been here before with my Junior Ryder Cup team mates – we had a lot of fun!

“I haven’t had the chance to play the golf course here, but I’ve heard lots of good things about it – and I’m sure the teams will really enjoy playing here next year.”

The 2018 Junior Ryder Cup will be the tenth staging of the event which has seen some of the world’s greatest players pass through its ranks.

Reigning Masters Tournament champion Sergio Garcia played in the 1995 exhibition match, and four years later was a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup Team in Brookline.

Two-time Major winner Suzann Pettersen took part in both the 1997 and 1999 editions of the Junior Ryder Cup, while four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy formed part of the victorious European side of 2004.

Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Lexi Thompson are some of the global stars who have represented the United States team – who have won six of the ten meetings between the two sides.

This month’s issue of IGPN is a Ryder Cup special edition that focuses on what was a wonderful few days of fantastic competition in Hazeltine.

Sadly for Team Europe our US cousins pulled away strongly in the latter stages to earn their first win since 2008. Our heartfelt congratulations go to Davis Love III and Team USA, and our commiserations go to Darren and all involved in Team Europe.

Result aside, the event was truly a spectacular one – the size and scale of the show that the PGA of America put on was fantastic and it was a pleasure and a privilege to be involved.

It was also an honour to represent Ryder Cup Europe and the Confederation of Professional Golf at the Junior Ryder Cup matches just down the road at Interlachen Country Club at the beginning of the week.

As you’ll see in the below video, the matches are now an integral part of the Ryder Cup and really do act as a feeder for future Ryder and Solheim Cup stars. Again, whilst the outcome wasn’t necessarily in Europe’s favour, the event provides a unique experience to leading young players on both sides of the Atlantic.

Elsewhere in this issue you’ll see various other touch points that the Confederation of Professional Golf has with the Ryder Cup, including the Ryder Cup European Development Trust (RCEDT) and then some excellent interviews with, and insights from, the PGA Professionals that have worked with some of the Europe’s finest players.

We are very proud to manage the RCEDT and during this year’s matches we celebrated ’10 Years of Trust’ – 10 years since the Trust began distributing funding across the continent to organisations and individuals to help them develop grass roots golf. A real and direct example of how the professional game gives back to the rest of the sport.

Over 35 projects in 29 countries have been supported ranging from PGAs, Federations, individual clubs and coaches, education systems and programmes, to golf development initiatives, helping golf to spread and prosper around Europe.

Soon we will accumulate all of this collective knowledge, along with further research of successful programmes, in order to share good practice and information through a golf development hub and toolkit.

Lastly, and whilst not strictly connected with the Ryder Cup, it’s important we mention the recently launched Golf & Health Project that we have been involved with.

Together with researchers from various universities and institutions around the world, the World Golf Foundation and its constituent organisations, and leading academics, there is now solid and researched evidence to support what many of us had already thought about golf.

Golf is good for you – it’s as simple as that. Golfers can live 5 years longer, have reduced chances of getting over 40 chronic diseases, and can have increased confidence, self worth and

self esteem. A message that we can all, no matter who or where you are, can get behind and share to the wider world.

As always, feel free to get in touch with Editor, Aston Ward (aw@CPG.com), if you have feedback, ideas or would like to contribute to IGPN and A.S.K.

Amateur Champion Bradley Neil to play at his home club Blairgowrie

Three players to represent Europe for the second time

Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Suzann Pettersen all former Junior Ryder Cup players

The European team for the Junior Ryder Cup was announced today as Captain Stuart Wilson revealed the names of the 12 young amateur stars to take on the USA at The Blairgowrie Golf Club from September 22-23.

Wilson announced his selection at the conclusion of the European Golf Association’s European Young Masters at Hamburger Golf Club in Germany, with the team comprised of four boys under the age of 18, four girls under the age of 18 as well as two under-16 boys and two under-16 girls.

Amateur Champion Bradley Neil will lead the line for the European team after the young Scot was the first name to be announced, in what is a huge boost for the event which takes place at his home club in the Perthshire town of Blairgowrie.
The 18 year old, who last month became the first Scot to win the Amateur Championship since European team Captain Wilson claimed the title in 2004, will be joined in the team by the Ladies British Open Amateur Champion, Denmark’s Emily Pedersen.

Pedersen plays in her second successive Junior Ryder Cup having represented Europe at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois, where the USA retained the title after a 14½-9½ victory.

Another player returning to the Junior Ryder Cup fold is promising young Italian Renato Paratore, who has been making a name for himself on The European Tour in 2014.

A close friend of Matteo Manassero, Paratore created a stir at least year’s Italian Open when he made the cut, while he continued to defy his amateur status by making it to the weekend at the Open de España last May.

The 17 year old also continued his progress in the non-paid ranks with victory at this year’s Portuguese Amateur Championship followed by the Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

Linnea Strom is the third and final player making a second appearance at the Junior Ryder Cup, having earned her place as a 16 year old at the 2012 edition, and she continues to show signs of being a star in the making, this year, winning the Spanish Ladies Amateur in March while last year making the cut at the Ladies European Tour’s Helsingborg Open.

Markus Kinhult is another future star who has been turning heads at the highest levels of the professional game, having followed up top five finishes at the Portuguese Amateur Championship and the Lytham Trophy with a tied 21st place finish at the Nordea Masters on The European Tour.

Ivan Cantero was also selected after an extremely consistent season in which he won the strokeplay qualifier for the European Boys’ Team Championship before helping Spain to a fifth place finish, while also earning top five finishes at the Spanish Amateur Championship and the Portuguese Amateur Championship.

The other two to make up the under-18 girls are German Girls Open Champion Virginia Elena Carta of Italy and 2014 Curtis Cup player and recently-crowned Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Champion Annabel Dimmock of England.

Germany had a great week in Hamburg having both winners of the European Young Masters who earned their place on the team, making up two of the four under-16 players to represent Europe in September, with Alexandra Försterling triumphing in the girls’ tournament and Max Schmitt winning the boys’.

Danish International Strokeplay and English U16 (McGregor Trophy) champion John Axelsen of Denmark was the other boy to make it as one of the under 16 selections while France’s Mathilda Cappeliez, who finished as the highest amateur at this year’s Turkish Airlines Open on the Ladies European Tour at the age of 15, was the other under-16 girl to be chosen.

Junior Ryder Cup Captain, Stuart Wilson said: “It is fantastic to have both Men’s & ladies Amateur Champions playing along with other inform players that have been collecting experience at the highest level in both the amateur and professional ranks.
“Although they all have match play experience it is nice having returning players to the team. Having personally experienced the Junior Ryder Cup in Chicago two years ago I know that they will have an unforgettable week made up with great golf, lots of memories and new friendships. Hopefully their selection will be a stepping stone to further success in their golfing careers.”

The Junior Ryder Cup is a biennial contest between Europe and America, and the teams consist of boys and girls under the age of 18. The USA retained the trophy in 2012, winning at Olympia Fields in Chicago, and the Americans are aiming for four wins in a row this year.

Fredrik Lindgren, Director of The Junior Ryder Cup, added: “The Junior Ryder Cup is always a thrilling event which showcases some of the best up and coming international talent. It is a fantastic way to get involved in the whole ethos of sporting excellence and camaraderie that The Ryder Cup represents and we are looking forward to a superb event at Blairgowrie.”

The event is an international showcase of golf’s next generation, and is designed to continue to build international friendships between top junior golfers in the United States and Europe. Notable past players include Rory McIlroy, Matteo Manassero, Suzann Pettersen, Carlota Ciganda and Hunter Mahan.
