On the 24th and 25th of March 2022 the partners in the EU funded EDUGOLF project met for their third meeting in Madrid, Spain, hosted by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG). After the first two meetings were held online this was the first face-to-face meeting of the partners.

At the start of the meeting the partners expressed their support and solidarity with colleagues from the National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport (NUPPES) which is a full partner in the EDUGOLF project.

RESEARCH

The research phase of EDUGOLF is exploring topics such as the economic and social value of golf, types of organisations in golf, occupations, and key competences for the golf workforce.

The partners considered the first findings from the EDUGOLF survey of golf organisations and made plans for the next stage of research which will be interviews with golf employers about skills of the workforce, successful initiatives for growing the game, and trends which will impact on the golf market. A draft EDUGOLF Research Report will be produced before the next partner meeting in November.

STANDARDS

A core output from EDUGOLF will be a new set of occupational standards for the golf industry made up of competences required of the golf workforce.

At the meeting, the partners considered the key purpose, or mission, of the golf industry and the main functional areas such as events, coaching and management, to produce the “functional map” which is the starting point for the development of detailed occupational standards.

The results from the meeting will be considered by the EDUGOLF sub-groups for golf coaching standards, and golf management standards, which are meeting regularly and will produce new draft standards before the next meeting.

EDUCATION

EDUGOLF will produce a Training Handbook for the golf industry as well as new e-learning modules for professionals in golf. At the meeting, the partners brainstormed the key topics to be included in the EDUGOLF Training Handbook, including:

• Learning outcomes
• Module outlines
• Delivery methods
• Quality assurance
• Accreditation
• Assessment
• Align with career pathways
• Tutors/ assessors
• Align with EDUGOLF standards
• Learning time
• E-learning
• Overlap with other sports

The Training Handbook will be an invaluable resource for the golf industry and the future of golf education in Europe.

PGA of Belgium Member and Chief Executive, Bernard De Bruyckere, has been awarded the CPG 5-Star Professional Award in recognition of his 30+ years in the sport and his hugely significant role in the development of the PGA of Belgium and its Members.

The 5-Star Professional Award looks to recognise the best in the business – individuals who exhibit the key characteristics of what being a PGA Professional represents and have shown excellence across the many areas of expertise and activity that PGA Members are involved in.

De Bruyckere, who celebrated 30 years of service to the PGA of Belgium in early December, has demonstrated this perfectly throughout his career in areas such as coaching, administration, refereeing, education and development, to name but a few.

“It is a huge moment,” said De Bruyckere who received the award at the CPG Annual Awards Supported by Rolex, held at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. “To be nominated by your own PGA and Board and get recognition from the CPG, who now represent 43 countries worldwide, is amazing – I am very proud.

“It has been an adventure. When I started there were no computers, smartphones…not even the Euro! So to see the evolution of the game and the technology that surrounds it has been an incredible experience. Being a PGA Professional is a true challenge as you are dealing with so many different people and you have to find many solutions to a range of complex problems.”

De Bruyckere began working as a golf instructor during his military service and comes from a long line of golfers, with his Grandfather a greenkeeper at Royal Zoute Golf Club and his Father an Assistant Professional in their own rights.  At the age of just 24, he became the youngest golf manager in Belgium at that time.

His move to the administrative side of the sport occurred when he became treasurer for the PGA of Belgium, going on to assume the General Secretary position in 1994, where he has been ever since. As the first PGA of Belgium Professional to pass The R&A rules school, he has also officiated many national tournaments and CPG [formerly PGAs of Europe] events, such as the PGA Professional Championship of Europe, Fourball Championship and Beko Classic Pro-Am.

Bernard continues to have a significant impact on the education of PGA of Belgium Professionals and those further afield through his vision for, and development of, the association’s training and education programme.

CPG Chairman, Frank Kirsten, commented: “It is a great pleasure to have been able to award this honour to my great friend, Bernard.  We have known each other for many years and I cannot think of anyone more fitting to receive this recognition, considering the role he has played in developing PGA of Belgium members and PGA Professionals further afield too.”

The focus of EDUGOLF is skills development and education reform, but before the work on education and skills can begin it is vital to set the project on a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding about the current situation regarding golf in Europe and consider key issues for the future of golf. This is being facilitated through the research phase of the project.

Prior to the meeting, the partners completed a major desk research activity to input all relevant data from their country, including new types of facilities, skills requirements, and examples of successful interventions to grow the game. All submitted data was analysed by the lead research partner National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport (NUPPES).

The November meeting gave the opportunity to present key themes from the research findings so far and debate them with partners.

The group discussed the following issues in relation to the future of golf in Europe:

• What is the golf industry and how does it link to other sectors?
• Economic and social value of golf
• Evolution of the golf industry and what does it seek to achieve today and in the future?
• Types of organisations and operating models
• Occupations in the golf industry
• Key competences, skills and attributes
• Recruitment, training and progression

Key issues debated by the partners at the meeting included

• The need to recognise and support the volunteer workforce to grow the game and ensure a healthy future, including the new role of “activator”
• The impact and challenges related to Covid and how it affects the future of the game
• The benefit for the future of golf which could be derived through sharing education with other sports and other disciplines
• What skills are needed by professionals in golf in order to grow participation and widen the customer base for the future?

These issues will also be covered in the next phases of EDUGOLF research including a survey of golf organisations and interviews with golf employers.

The partners now look forward to using the solid research foundations to define standards and education for golf in Europe through the innovative outputs of the EDUGOLF project.

For the first time in two years, the Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG] will bring together representatives from its 43 Member Countries for the Annual Congress and International Team Championship [ITC] hosted by Penina Hotel & Golf Resort and supported by Turismo de Portugal, Turismo do Algarve and the Ryder Cup European Development Trust.

The Annual Congress is a fabulous environment for sharing knowledge across National PGAs and collaborating on activities outlined in the CPG’s five-year strategic plan – CPG Thrive – that is built on the guiding principles of Togetherness, Collaboration and Development to enable the strength and influence of the organisation’s collective membership to thrive.

VISIT THE INTERNATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

For the first time in the history of Ukrainian golf, golf coaches were trained in line with the Confederation of Professional Golf’s [CPG] international level 1 coach education program.

Together with the Ukrainian Golf Federation, the PGA of Ukraine (a CPG Member Country) coordinated and contributed to the delivery of the programme in collaboration with the CPG. Beginning in June online and culminating in a 5-day in-person workshop, students were involved in a number of different activities including theoretical classes and additional external learning. Each trainee also had access to the CPG Learning Institute, which contains training materials, assessments and deadlines to ensure high quality training and educational delivery for their personal development.

On October 24, the 5-day training at the H Club concluded. Led and managed by PGA of Holland members Jim van Heuven van Staereling and Wiebe Gisen, as well as the CPG’s Director for Community Coaching & Parents in Golf, David Kearney, the workshop was attended by 29 participants in total, consisting of both current and future coaches.

The training included theoretical, practical parts and assessment. For the first three days, there was a lot of tutor-led insight and information, alongside discussions and application. The trainees then focused on improving their own coaching delivery through the application of visual, kinesthetic and audio teaching aids; they studied the impact of ball flight laws; and also developed their coaching delivery skills for juniors, adults, beginners and more.

At the end of the 5 days, each participant was then assessed on various disciplines including golf clubs and technology, the rules of golf, and a group coaching lesson. Upon successful completion of the programme, each participant receives official certification of their Level 1 training.

Ruslan Harkavenko, President of PGA Ukraine, said, “Since my presidency at PGA Ukraine, the number one task has been to give every coach the opportunity to receive an international education. It took us two years to do this, first, it was the Parents in Golf training program and seminars for golf coaches and activators. And this year – Level 1 for coaches. I am grateful to my team for the organization. And most importantly, such training makes us and all members of the PGA even stronger as a team, as we learn to work together and help each other. Thank you to the CPG, all the tutors for their cooperation and impeccable work, as well as the management of H Club for the opportunity to conduct training on the golf courses.”

VISIT PGA OF UKRAINE

The Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG] have activated the first step in its vision to modernise and further advance education of PGA Professionals and the workforce for golf with the imminent launch and subsequent rollout of its new online education platform.

The Learning Management System [LMS] will increase collaboration between the CPG and its Member Countries around educational activity and provide each PGA Member with a centralised digital tool that raises their learning experiences.

Chief Executive of the CPG, Ian Randell, commented: “This new platform will elevate each of our member’s education offerings irrespective of size and it reiterates our commitment to invest in technology and invest in our members to create collective benefit for them, for the CPG, and for the workforce of the game.

“The LMS launch also provides a strong proof-of-concept around our 5-year strategic plan, CPG Thrive, and the collective #oneCPG approach we have taken with our membership, as it encourages each Member Country involved with the platform to share relevant information and educational content with others.”

Following a number of pilots throughout May, official launch of the new LMS across the entire CPG Membership is imminent and will be available for Member Country PGAs to license, customise and use for their basic and on-going education programmes.

Canadian-based software company, D2L – creators of the Brightspace Learning Management Tool who already work with the PGA of Canada – are tasked with delivering the educational platform. Alan Hiddleston, Director Corporate Learning EMEA at D2L, said: “The CPG’s dedication to the continuous professional development of its membership is inspiring and we’re very pleased it has chosen Brightspace to help modernise golf education.

“Once launched, PGA Members will benefit from increased and more flexible learning opportunities that are more impactful for them as learners and more easily measurable for CPG Member Countries”.

Executive Director – Knowledge Development for the CPG, Wojciech Waśniewski, said: “The new LMS system will have significant benefits to all of our member countries and in my dual role heading up the education of both CPG and the PGA of Poland, it is evident that smaller associations such as the PGA of Poland will be able to streamline their educational delivery and tracking, as well as create access to new educational opportunities for members through use of this LMS. Investing in such a platform would be unfeasible for the vast majority of our members on their own.”

The 27th of April 2021 saw the kick-off meeting for EDUGOLF; a new project funded through the Erasmus+ Sport programme of the European Union. The European Observatoire of Sport and Employment [EOSE] and the Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG] have joined forces to lead this innovative golf education and skills development project in partnership with eight leading organisations from the worlds of golf and education.

The EDUGOLF project is founded on the principle that adapting to change can revitalise the sport of golf and allow it to meet its potential to improve the lives of individuals and society as a whole.

The focus of the 3-year EDUGOLF project will be on skills development and education reform, firmly rooted in the belief that those working in golf, in both paid and voluntary positions (and those wishing to do so in the future), are the key to the future of the sport.

The main outputs of the EDUGOLF project include:

• A Research report on changing realities and tendencies of the golf labour market and education requirements
• European Occupational Standards for golf
• Innovative online learning to meet the changing skills needs of golf in Europe

At the kick-off meeting the partners focussed on the comprehensive research phase of the project which will take place over the next 12 months and will include desk research and a survey of national golf organisations. Partners contributed a range of views and signposted to existing sources to inform the research which will be overseen by a dedicated research sub-group.

The agenda of this first full partner meeting also covered expectations of the project, confirmation of the work plan, project administration and the importance of wide communication and dissemination activities.

The PGA of Denmark have revealed an exciting new educational seminar programme focused on Junior Development for early 2020, and registration is now open for all interested delegates.

Hosted by the Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort, host venue of the European Tour’s Made in Denmark Event, the series of seminars will draw key speakers from across various coaching disciplines including kinesiology, coaching children and elite level golf.

Whilst the first day will be in Danish, the final three days will be provided in English and so interested parties from international PGA’s are encouraged to attend and engage with what will be an insightful and progressive educational event.

VISIT THE PGA OF DENMARK

The five attendees of IPE – Danilo Kraljevic, Luka Karaula, Robert Savic, Vladimir Efremow and Piero Mina, arrived in Holland representing various PGAs including Serbia, Russia and Croatia.

The week gave the students an opportunity to complete the first half of their required eight residential days (in which the last four will be completed in February), receiving information from tutors across various disciplines including golf coaching and club administration. By attending, the students have taken the first step into achieving their own professional goals in the golf industry, and the necessary qualifications to support their respective golf clubs and clients in the future.

Director of IPE Jim Van Heuven Van Staereling, commented on the week: “The students enjoyed their stay and went home with an open mind and probably more questions than when they arrived.

“However, facilitating this desire for further learning is the main aim of the first stage of IPE, and I very much look forward to observing their further development over the next few weeks and months”.

Haarlemmermeersche Golf Club was a perfect host for the week, providing perfect practice facilities, 36 holes of golf  (9 of which are flood-lightened) and a close proximity to the country’s capital, Amsterdam. This all enabled a seamless delivery of the programme and maximised the student’s overall experience.

Between now and February, students will undertake and complete an online portfolio – new to IPE, that is guided and assessed by IPE course tutors. This covers every element on the course specification and prepares each student for the final stage of the programme in February.

Upon successful completion of IPE’s learning outcomes, students will attain  ‘Apprentice Professional’ status and be well on their way to becoming a fully qualified PGA Golf Professional with their respective CPG Member Countries.

Q: What is the similarity between someone winning a fortune in the lottery draw (lotto) and an elite amateur golfer turning professional?

A: Their sudden change of status means both undergo the process of ‘transition’ and managing that process well is easier said than done.

The challenge of  successfully ‘transitioning’ is highlighted by the fact that up to 70% of all major lottery winners worldwide end up bankrupt within a few years of their big win and less than 1% of elite amateurs make the ‘grade’ in big-time professional golf.

For my Sports Coaching MSc dissertation I was lucky enough to interview nine former elite male amateur golfers about their experiences following their transition to professional golf. My presentation at the first A.S.K workshop in Hungary will cover some of the findings of my research and possibly challenge those present to see the process of ‘elite players turning professional’ through new eyes.

‘Barriers and coping resources’ is an expression coined by Dr Natalia Stambulova, one of the world leaders in understanding why some athletes make the grade while most do not. It refers to Dr.  Stambulova’s ‘formula for success’ for elite athletes.

During my presentation I will draw on some of her research work as well as that Dr. Nancy Schlossberg; a leading authority of ‘life transitions’.

Research has shown coaching and the relationships between players, parents and diverse coaches to be an often “messy” and complex process. My interest in the subject of inter-coach relationships initially stems from my own experiences during an eight year period (2001-2008) where I was a highly motivated junior coach at Sigmaringen Golf Club in South-West Germany.

During that period and under my guidance, our junior programme developed 5 elite players who went on to gain state (regional) or national recognition through their on-course achievements.  My relationship with the various county and national coaches during that period varied from very collaborative to passive-aggressive to non-existent.

Feedback from many home and regional/national coaching colleagues throughout Europe indicate tension or a lack of communication often exists between them and one can reasonably assume these seemingly fractured relationships impact negatively upon player development.

During my 2015 Coaches Circle presentation I will initially discuss the “why?” behind the differing relationships between home and county/national coaches.  Part of this discussion will cover the micro-politics of governing bodies within Golf, the various effect of pyramid systems on coaches and players, and why coaches may find it difficult to “park their ego” when working with junior players.

To conclude my presentation I will suggest two possible strategies for developing more productive home and regional/national coach relationships.

SCHEDULE

The Annual Congress is the chance for PGA representatives, along with leaders from Federations and other significant golfing bodies from across the continent, to meet and discuss the state of play within their respective territories, as well as learn and share ideas with each other alongside fantastic speakers from not only the world of golf but wider industries as well.

This year the Gloria Serenity Hotel at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey’s Belek region played host to the event giving delegates a taste of luxury during their stay that included four days of presentations, workshops and networking interspersed with golf at Gloria Golf Club’s New Course.

The Congress week got off on the right foot with in-depth one-to-one sessions with many of the Member PGAs’ representatives looking at elements of their associations such as education, membership and communications.

The second day then began the group sessions with working groups looking at how success and good practice can be shared amongst the members, followed closely by a great example of how collaboration between different amateur and professional bodies in a country can be so beneficial with insights from Director of Golf and Business Development at the Confederation of Golf in Ireland, John Roche.  The PGA of Sweden then also shared their work and efforts in the area of using the PGA Professional as a resource for golf in their country.

Day three started with a look at the International Golf Coaching Framework (IGCF) developed by the PGA World Alliance with PGA Executive Director – Education, Global Development for the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, Dr. Kyle Phillpots.

A hands-on session then followed with Alan McColm from MBR Solutions who looked at helping develop practical leadership skills to help build a sustainable business and operation, giving delegates the chance to develop tangible actions to take back to their teams in their native countries.

The final day consisted of updates on the PGA Junior League, the Association’s recognition of professional standards with Chairman of the Education Committee, Jonathan Mannie, and Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett, as well as a look at the upcoming inclusion of golf at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil with IGF Executive Director, Antony Scanlon.

The Congress sessions closed with anniversary-focused sessions – the first of which took a look back at the first 25 years of the Association with key individuals from across its history: Current Chairman, Sandy Jones, former Secretary, Lawrie Thornton, past Honorary President, Donato di Ponziano, and former Education Committee Chairman, Leif Ohlsson.

Closing out the final section was a look at where the Association is currently, and most importantly what might lie in store for the Confederation of Professional Golf and its members in the future.  Chief Executive, Ian Randell, and Communications Manager, Aston Ward, explored how the Association operates in 2015 and then how this could change over the next 10, 15, and 25 years as the world and its inhabitants change rapidly, and how national PGAs should be aware and ready to act in response to, and ahead of, these changes.

As is tradition the Congress closed with the coming together of delegates and the ITC competitors at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex where awards were handed to six highly deserving winners including Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Bernhard Langer, and 5 Star Professional Award winner, Paul Lawrie.

21 countries were represented at the event and were brought together under the umbrella theme of youth golf and to time with the EGA’s European Team Shield Championship.

With subject matter such as working with federations, junior player development, high performance in youth golf, junior academies and coaching relationships, the event has already received hugely positive praise:

“The feedback we’ve received so far has been excellent – really first class,” said Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett.  “With the format we have it is very interactive and rather than just have ‘talking heads’…this has been an opportunity for the delegates to really dig into the minds and souls of the speakers.

The education event continued its tradition of selecting some of the best speakers from across the continent and further afield to educate, inform and discuss the subject matter of youth golf.

“We always take the view that we have lots of good speakers and lots of good people in Europe, and with that in mind you don’t always have to go for celebrity teachers,” added Bennett.  “There’s lots of good work getting done out there every day on every driving range somewhere in Europe.  Those people are working with the players at the sharp end and understand what is going on.  So we felt as though we could put a very good group of people together from that background.”

As the organiser of the international golf trade fair GOLF EUROPE, Messe Augsburg has decided to move the trade fair to next year. Despite the extensive interest displayed by both exhibitors and partners, the latest developments in the golf industry necessitate a review of the future organisation of this event.

In the past few years, GOLF EUROPE has successfully established itself as a business platform for the entire European golf industry. The high quality standards and attentiveness of the trade fair team and the choice of Augsburg as a trade fair location as it is centrally situated in a charming region and has excellent transport links have won unanimous praise.

The exhibitors from the various industry sectors nevertheless seem very heterogeneous, especially as far as the ideal timeframe for the trade fair is concerned. It has therefore been decided that the industry meeting’s profile needs to be defined in more detail for the relevant target groups in consultation with the partners in order to find a date that is as convenient as possible for all participants.

It is hoped that this will boost the level of interest ready for the new trade fair date in 2016, which will be announced in due time.

The interaction between a federation and their national coach is a fundamental of any success which the players will have on the course. A harmonious relationship must exist in spirit of mutual trust and respect. A thorough understanding of the selection structure, aspirations and needs of the federation is perhaps the most important first step.

Once fully understood, the relationship can develop and be hugely beneficial for all parties, federation, coach and most importantly for the players. The coach is effectively a bridge to connect the federation and players, and if the objectives of one collide with the other then it will be the coach who has to deal with the impact.  It is obvious that the coach must deliver on the federations objectives, but must also protect the interests of the players.

Coaching a group of talented athletes is always a challenge and involves some key areas that require understanding:

• Understanding of the standard of golf throughout Europe
• Understanding entry criteria into top amateur tournaments
• Understanding the development of players from good to elite players

Transparency in the structure, selection criteria and reporting is a must and should be laid out in the contract, whilst clarity in the expectations of all concerned will make things easier and as time goes on.

During the presentation I will also look at some of the concepts that I have developed which help to define my approach to coaching national teams that will act as a ‘how-to’ guide.

One of these is BTMES, which stands for Body, Technique, Mental, Emotional and Social.  Working with these five areas as key markers in your schedule and programme will help address many challenges before they become a bigger issue.

In preparation for the presentation I would encourage you to look into the structures of federations, how national teams are established, as well as the selection criteria that are commonly used for national players.

Day Two begins with Director of Coaching for the Cranfield Golf Academy, Steven Orr’s, session detailing the skills and character traits of young players, whilst Managing Director of KRL Consulting, Karl Morris, will draw on his experience with both the Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke Golf Schools for his session on expectations and benefits of juniors attending a structured junior golf academy.

Advanced Fellow of the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland from the Impact Golf Academy, Ian Peek, will then look at the relationships between home coaches and their national/regional counterparts and whether this is a case of ‘coaching ego over player success’.

Working with many talented junior players individually and also as an England Golf coach for the south-east of England, several players make the step up, while many more don’t.  This presentation will attempt to answer the following questions;

• What skills do junior players need to move up from regional to national level?
• What is the difference between those who move up and those who don’t?
• What happens when roadblocks appear? And should the coach create these intentionally?
• How can a coach implement mental skills into the players training? And which are most important for a player at this stage of development
• How can a coach effectively create habit change in junior golfers?

In an attempt to answer these questions, this presentation will draw on research on psychology, motivation and habit change as well as looking at real world case studies of players that have progressed and those that haven’t and reasons why.

An Impressive Business Showcase For the Golf industry

High-Powered Lectures For the Benefit of PGA Professionals

This year the support programme for GOLF EUROPE included the “Pro Shop Forum” and the “PGA Learn & Earn Zone”. Light was shed in the talks given in the “Pro Shop Forum” targeting businesses from the textile and functional clothing sector, on the topics of planning and management accounting aiming to make these companies more profitable with independent management consultant, Uwe Duchardt. “How to display clothing and footwear correctly and how to use sales aids effectively” with adidas & Ashworth Golf’s Axel Beland was also a popular topic of discussion.

There were informative and very interesting lectures given again in the “Learn & Earn Zone”, amongst other things there was a talk given by Dr David McGhie, the Research and Development Manager at Swing Catalyst which focussed on research into biomechanics and the topic of “ground reaction forces and driving” as well as from Michael Arndt and Christian Sude from Golf-Osteopathie Deutschland, about “The impact of the upper cervical spine being blocked on the Golf swing from the osteopath’s perspective.”

On the Monday of GOLF EUROPE the Golf Management Verband Deutschland organised the “The conflict between golf management and golf schools” workshop.

An international jury of experts subjected the innovative products to close scrutiny and assessed them.
