Past President of the PGA of Czech Republic, Petr Nitra, has etched his name into the history books becoming the latest PGA Professionals to earn the CPG’s 5-Star Professional Award.

“I would like to sincerely thank you for this prestigious and high honour that I have been awarded,” said Nitra on receiving his award at the CPG Festival of Golf at Saïdia Resorts in Morocco.

“The news of my nomination for the award reached me whilst I was on vacation and surprised me greatly but has brought me immense joy…and for me to be a PGA Professional is really living my dream.

“I am proud of the Board of the Czech PGA who do a great job, they are very strong and we have many coaches, and their cooperation with the Federation is great now and I am pleased to have done everything I can to help this over the years.”

Since 1992, the 5-Star Professional Award has been acknowledging the efforts and excellent of golf professionals that truly exemplify what it is to be a PGA Pro. Nitra joins this elite and illustrious group of some 90 individuals from around the world.

Nitra has been involved in many facets of golf from coaching players of all levels of ability, owning and operating his own golf facility in Germany, to influencing the administration and development of the sport in his role with the PGA of Czech Republic.

Nitra took up golf in 1970 and at the time Czechoslovakia was the only communist country where golf could be played, with him relying on minoring countries or peoples’ rare trips abroad to access golf equipment.

With opportunities in golf being limited, he moved to Hamburg, Germany, in the mid 80s and completed his training under professional Hans Heiser who himself contributed to European golf.

After sampling American golf in the 90s, but ultimately deciding not to move there permanently, Nitra returned to Czechoslovakia where he joined, and subsequently led, the PGA of Czech Republic, becoming it’s President from 2002 to 2016.

“I firmly believe that the Czech PGA is now an integral part of both the European and global PGA communities,” added Nitra.

“The current board, which has continued our work, is doing an excellent and responsible job – there is no doubt about that.”

Nitra’s efforts across the sport, both in his native Czech Republic, and his adopted home of Germany, display just how varied and impactful a PGA Professional’s roles can be and make him a worthy winner of this famous award.

World renowned coach, Hugh Marr, has been announced as the 2024 recipient of the CPG’s John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching.

Hugh is the latest winner of the award that is known as one of the highest accolades a golf coach can earn in the world, all in the name of the godfather of golf coaching, John Jacobs.

“Any time you are recognised by your peers it feels a privilege, and to have my name associated with John Jacobs is something that can go down in history, so yes I feel incredibly fortunate,” said the Master Coach on receiving his award at the CPG Festival of Golf at Saïdia Resorts in Morocco.

“I love golf, and I know how much pleasure it gives people to play, so anything I can do to contribute to that, whether it’s coaching players or coaching coaches makes me genuinely happy.”

Hugh has worked with a variety of players at all levels, including those at the very pinnacle of the sport. He currently works with Thorbjørn Olesen and has helped shape his multiple wins in previous years, whilst also supporting Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, Scott Jamieson and various others who have been highly successful across the world’s tours.

But he continues to also be known for his efforts in supporting and developing the coaching community at large, through activities such as The Coach Alliance that he helped to found, his ‘Coach Hub’ platform and community, as well as numerous webinars, interviews and workshops designed to share knowledge with coaches at any level of the game and any level of experience.

“I firmly believe that the coaching community is the single most important stakeholder in our wonderful sport,” Hugh states.

“To be truly effective as coaches we must develop our skills with this in mind. I want to up-skill coaches to deliver on their responsibility to the game, to create a high-functioning community of like-minded people all passionate about improving themselves and the game.

“I’ve always been driven by ensuring I am doing all I can to make the players I work with better, and now it’s the same for coaches…so I am always trying to do the right thing at the right time with the best information available to me.”

Christiane spoke to the CPG direct from Paris during the Olympic Golf women’s competition about her experiences as a Rules Official during the week, the electric atmosphere at Le Golf National, and her valuable advice for PGA Members early on in their careers looking to develop themselves.

The Olympics so far have been amazing, and, knowing that I would come here, I’ve watched a lot on TV. Obviously the crowds were amazing for the men, but I have to say that it’s as good for the women. Especially the French girls have been supported massively, but so have the entire field – the fans have been amazing.

We could hardly move anywhere with buggies, which is always a good sign because it means that a lot of people are there to watch.

The atmosphere is amazing and it does feel different than a normal tournament because you just have far more people involved. People are really cheering each other along and they’re playing for their country rather than for prize money, which does give a bit of a different atmosphere.

Especially on the first tee when the players tee off – there are so many people cheering for every player and it is absolutely amazing.

My role this week has been as a rules official, but we do change the official assignments every day. Some days I’m assigned to a specific zone where I am responsible for any rulings popping up in that area. But on other days I’m assigned to be a rover, in charge of managing pace of play, and I could be either on the front nine or back nine, or as general rules, or keeping an overall picture.

To be part of the Olympics as a rules official is just amazing to be honest. It is always nice to be part of a big team, and we only get to meet the officials from the other tours where we do majors usually. So when we share tournaments it is always nice to meet up and collaborate. We have our colleagues from the LPGA but also we have people here from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, The R&A, and USGA so it’s always really nice to be involved together and see what happens on the different tours and exchanging things.

The core setup this week is a little different to what we do on normal weeks on the LET, and much closer to what we do in major weeks. It is a bit tougher than the average LET tournament – the main differences are the course is playing slightly longer and green speed a bit faster. Plus we have an entire agronomy team here besides the local greenkeeping team and supervisor.

So there’s just more resources involved than what we normally have, but otherwise the standards are similar.

If I talk from a rules perspective, then if I’m just a rules official at one of our tournaments, then it is absolutely similar to what we do here. The only difference being that we have more referees out there than what we normally have. Normally we have around 6 – 8 rules officials out there – this week we are fortunate enough to have one rules official covering two or three holes, so we just have more staff on the ground.

My best piece of advice for a PGA member early in their career…? I started off with teaching and I really enjoyed my time doing that, but I think it is all about exploring what prospective options you actually have. Most people think it is purely teaching or maybe being a club manager, but there are so many options around what you can do as a PGA Member. Explore your options, try different things, and then try to find something that will inspire you to do it for the rest of your career. There is nothing wrong with doing one thing throughout your career at all but I am sure many would like to try different things along the way too.

Impact on recreational game kept to an absolute minimum

The R&A and USGA will update the testing conditions used for golf ball conformance under the Overall Distance Standard (ODS), which will take effect from January 2028. The decision aims to reduce the impact increased hitting distances have on golf’s long-term sustainability while minimising the impact on the recreational game.

The revised ball testing conditions will be as follows: 125-mph clubhead speed (equivalent to 183 mph ball speed); spin rate of 2220 rpm and launch angle of 11 degrees. The current conditions, which were established 20 years ago, are set at 120 mph (equivalent to 176 mph ball speed), 2520 rpm with a 10-degree launch angle.

The revised conditions are based on analysis of data from the worldwide tours and the game over several years and are intended to ensure that the ODS (whose limit will remain unchanged at 317 yards with a 3-yard tolerance) continues to represent the ability of the game’s longest hitters. An analysis of ball speeds among golf’s longest hitters in 2023 shows that the fastest ten players had an average ball speed of 186 mph, while the average ball speed of the fastest 25 was 183.4 mph (the very fastest averaged 190 mph).

The longest hitters are expected to see a reduction of as much as 13-15 yards in drive distance. Average professional tour and elite male players are expected to see a reduction of 9-11 yards, with a 5-7-yard reduction for an average LET or LPGA player.

The change in testing speed is expected to have a minimal distance impact, 5 yards or less, for most recreational golfers. Research shows an average swing speed of 93 mph for male golfers and 72 mph for female players.

Existing balls approved for conformance in 2027 may continue to be used by recreational golfers until January 2030 to give golfers, manufacturers and retailers additional time to adjust. These decisions are in line with the commitments made by the governing bodies at the project’s inception.

A significant portion of golf ball models that are currently in the market – and more than 30 percent of all golf ball models submitted for conformance across the game – are expected to remain conforming after these changes are applied.

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “We are convinced that this decision is one of the key ways of achieving a sustainable future for golf, protecting the integrity of the game and meeting our environmental responsibilities. The measure we are taking has been carefully considered and calibrated while maintaining the ‘one game’ ethos deemed to be so important to the golf industry. Importantly, it also keeps the impact on recreational golfers to an absolute minimum. We are acting now because we want to ensure that future generations can enjoy the unique challenge of golf as much as we do.”

“Governance is hard. And while thousands will claim that we did too much, there will be just as many who said we didn’t do enough to protect the game long-term,” said Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA. “But from the very beginning, we’ve been driven to do what is right for the game, without bias. As we’ve said, doing nothing is not an option – and we would be failing in our responsibility to protect the game’s future if we didn’t take appropriate action now.”

The Notice of Decision follows the most thorough and comprehensive examination of the issue in the game’s history through the Distance Insights project, which was launched in 2018 and gathered data, shared research and solicited feedback from golf course owners, players, and stakeholders across the game. Data provided by the seven major worldwide tours has also been analysed by the governing bodies, who have published Annual Driving Distance Reports every year since 2015.

The reports followed the governing bodies’ joint Conclusions from the Distance Insights Project: Implication of Hitting Distance in Golf, which shared the reasons why addressing the continuing trend of hitting distance increases and subsequent course lengthening is critical to the game’s long-term sustainability.

All golf ball and club manufacturers were advised of the decision on Tuesday and were given full technical details and an implementation timeline. The Notice of Decision takes into account the extensive research and feedback received from manufacturers and other industry stakeholders throughout the six-year process and following multiple Areas of Interest and proposals starting in 2021 as part of the Equipment Rulemaking process.

The extensive feedback received showed worldwide sentiment that the retention of a single set of playing rules and equipment standards is critically important to the sport and should apply across the game. Feedback from manufacturers resulted in the timeline being extended to 2028 to allow more time for innovation and production of new products for elite and recreational players.

In addition to the new ball-testing conditions, the governing bodies will:

Expand the testing approach to better detect ‘Driver Creep,’ which can result in drivers exceeding the limits set out in the Equipment Rules. This is a change in the testing methodology for submitted drivers, to identify and proactively address driver models that are within current tolerance levels and have Characteristic Time (CT) values that are more likely to exceed the limit through regular use.

Continue to monitor drivers and explore possible additional options related to distance. Specifically, we will research the forgiveness of drivers and how they perform with off-centre hits. This is an ongoing review and we will seek input from and continue to work with the industry, including manufacturers, to identify driver design features that can be regulated as a means to reward centre impact position hits versus mis-hits.

The R&A and the USGA are guided by an overarching principle to continue to preserve the fundamental elements of golf – protecting the integrity of golf courses, including their overall length, and ensuring that a variety of skills are needed to be successful.

Longer golf courses require additional resources such as water, the cost of renovating or moving elements like tees and bunkers continues to rise and other long-term impacts have been identified as a result of increased distance. The governing bodies believe that if the sport is to enjoy a sustainable long-term future then these economic and environmental impacts have to be kept under control.

The Overall Distance Standard was first introduced in 1976 and has been updated on three previous occasions (1980, 2002 and 2004). This is the first time that test speeds have been updated since 2004, when the current standard was set based on the longest hitters at that time.

In the nuanced game of golf, there’s a maxim that rings true across all skill levels—success on the green is driven by more than physical prowess. It’s about the resilience of the mind and the ability to navigate emotional currents. As PGA Professionals, we understand the pivotal role mental strength plays in the game. But how can we integrate these principles into our coaching techniques, making them tangible and impactful for our students, both amateur and professional?

A golf game isn’t won solely on the driving range or the putting green, but within the landscape of the mind. Consider the wisdom of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who said, “Golf is 80% mental, 10% physical, and 10% luck.” Anxiety, stress, and lack of confidence can obstruct even the most technically proficient golfer from achieving their potential.

To address these challenges, we must dissect the elements of mental toughness: Anxiety Management, Concentration, Confidence Building, Imagery, Mental Preparation, Motivation, and Relaxation. By understanding and incorporating these elements into our coaching, we can help our students not only confront but also overcome their mental hurdles.

Anxiety Management…

…is crucial for helping golfers stay composed under pressure. As a coach, you can integrate mindfulness exercises into training sessions, encouraging golfers to focus on the present moment, thus reducing anxiety and stress. For instance, during practice, have your students focus on the feel of the club in their hands, the sound of the swing, or the sight of the ball. This can help anchor them in the present, mitigating anxiety about past mistakes or future performance.

Concentration…

…is a fundamental part of golf, where a momentary lapse can make all the difference. To help your students improve focus, introduce exercises such as ‘quiet eye’ training, which involves maintaining a steady gaze on the target (like the hole or a particular spot on the ball) for a couple of seconds before the swing. This practice can improve visual attention and enhance accuracy.

Confidence Building…

…is best achieved through a blend of feedback and self-reflection. Encourage your students to journal their experiences during each game, noting what they felt worked well and what did not. Pair this with positive feedback, emphasising their strengths and achievements, which can significantly boost their confidence.

Imagery or visualisation…

…is a proven technique to enhance performance. Encourage your students to mentally rehearse their shots or play an entire game in their mind. This ‘mental walkthrough’ helps familiarise them with different scenarios, making them less daunting in reality.

Mental Preparation…

…is about setting up the right mindset before the game. Introduce practices like goal-setting at the beginning of each training session, discussing the plan for the day and what they aim to achieve. This provides a clear vision and promotes a focused mind.

Motivation…

…can be stimulated through setting both short-term and long-term goals. Celebrate small wins, such as improvements in swing mechanics or putting accuracy. These victories fuel motivation and show that progress is being made.

Relaxation techniques…

…like controlled breathing exercises can be incorporated into the warm-up or cooldown routines. A simple practice like taking deep, slow breaths can help slow down the heart rate, relax the body, and clear the mind, leading to improved performance.

49 years old, Ascanio Pacelli has been a professional and a member of PGA Italiana since 1997. He worked as a teacher in various clubs in Lazio (Arco di Costantino Golf and Parco di Roma), playing 50 competitions between Challenge and Alps Tours in the same period. Since 2010 he began to follow the Terre dei Consoli (Viterbo) project and, with the opening of the club the following year, he assumed the role of General Manager. Under his leadership the club hosted Challenge and Alps Tour tournaments, as well as national championships. In 2015 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Club Managers Association of Europe [CMAE] for a four-year term.

He was a member of the Education Policy Board of the CMAE, following the training process by participating in four courses to become a Certified Club Manager (recognised worldwide) in 2017. He was a speaker at the Management World Conference in San Diego (2016) presenting the Ryder Cup Roma 2022 project, and in San Francisco in 2018. Since September 2020 he has sat on the Federal Council representing the Coaches. His career also includes television, radio and journalistic experiences.

“I am still surprised considering that the idea of the candidacy was born only 50 days ago during a phone call with my colleague Marco Durante,” said Pacelli. “I was lucky to have met in this short but intense journey people who believed in me and whom I thank. Compared to the others I will have to try to gain their trust. Four important years await us, we want to see the Association grow on the basis of what has been done up to now (even in the most challenging times of the pandemic), whilst also trying to take new paths.”

The new Board of Directors is made up of Paolo BATTISTINI, Stefano BETTI, Mauro BIANCO, Monica COSENZA, Nicola MAESTRONI, Matia MAFFIULETTI, Alessandro TRILLINI, and Andrea ZANI.

PGA of Spain Member and first coach to Jon Rahm, Eduardo Celles, has received the CPG’s prestigious John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching, acknowledging his extensive work with players of all abilities across his career.

The award, presented at theCPG Annual Awards Supported By Rolex, is named in honour of the late John Jacobs and given to outstanding golf coaches that have made an enduring impact on the sport. Celles exemplifies this through both his role at his own academy with beginners and juniors, all the way through to his work with national team players, and of course not least to recent men’s world number one player, Jon Rahm.

“I owe this award to all my students; from those who take 100 shots to number one in the world,” said the former PGA of Spain Vice President. “I try to give them a lot of love, my trust, and accompany them on their golf path, because golf is like life with ups and downs, and a golf professional is someone very personal for those students.

Celles is a third generation PGA Professional who follows in the footsteps of his grandfather who won the Spanish Open in 1945, Carlos Celles Molina, and then his father who was also a legendary golf coach and a former CPG 5-Star Professional Award Winner, Carlos Celles Potente:

Having operated his own academy near Bilbao for over 25 years that is known for its golf development efforts and producing good players, plus being renowned for his exceptional work ethic and expertise, Celles has become a highly sought-after coach that has helped to teach thousands of students in his career already.

Celles’ career as a PGA Professional took a significant turn when he began working with Jon Rahm at the young age of 13 after having coached Rahm’s mother who suggested Celles also give lessons to her son who had shown promise. As the architect of Rahm’s swing, Celles has played a pivotal role in shaping the golf superstar into the world-class player he is today

His coaching endeavours have also included work with several national team members, national and European champions, and touring professionals such as Harang Lee or Javier Saiz.

“For us it is a great honour to have Eduardo Celles as a Member of the PGA of Spain, and the John Jacobs Award is well deserved,” said President of the PGA of Spain who nominated Celles for the award, Ander Martínez.

The CPG’s coveted 5-star Professional Award has been presented to a legend of the sport in Iceland, Arnar Már Ólafsson, at the CPG Annual Awards Supported By Rolex, recognising his achievements and progressiveness across his career as a PGA Professional. 

Ólafsson was one of the first PGA of Iceland Professionals, and across his career has played a fundamental role in the creation of professional education for Icelandic Professionals, developing a programme that is internationally recognised at the highest level, whilst also working as a coach himself to numerous players, particularly at the elite level.

“It is so amazing, just great, to be recognised, I was not expecting anything like this,” said Ólafsson during the Gala Awards Dinner at Costa Navarino, Greece. “I have been involved in many ways in setting up the educational system, as national coach…I’m always ready to help, always ready to do work, and so I think the PGA of Iceland wanted to thank me with this nomination.

“I have had support from so many people over the years, and of course I had to work hard, but I am proud of what we have done and I’m very thankful that I did this. My advice to young Professionals just starting out would be that it’s really important to just relax, to see what you see, and hear what you hear. Don’t have these built-in beliefs guiding you in the wrong direction. Because if you get a good mentor and good teacher, you just need to relax and let it flow. Then you can start seeing the right things and you will start to do the right things.”

Having been involved with the CPG from its very early stages, Ólafsson worked closely with the organisation and its Member Countries to help create the PGA of Iceland programme that has developed over time to be at the highest level of the European Education Level System [EELS] that recognises national education programmes internationally.

Still overseeing the programme today, Ólafsson [pictured below with PGA of Iceland President, Stefania Valgeirsdottir [right] and General Secretary, Rúnar Arnorsson [left]] has impacted every one of the 60+ PGA Professionals that have graduated the programme since 2008, with the programme being more popular than ever with approx. 50 people currently enrolled.

This direct effect on the professional workforce in the country then extends to touch the golf community overall, something that saw him being awarded with the Golfsamband Íslands [Golf Union of Iceland] gold medal in 2012 for his contribution to the sport in Iceland.

Ólafsson started out as a PGA Professional having graduated in 1991 from the PGA of Sweden and since then has split his roles between Iceland and Germany, working at clubs such as Keilir Golf Club, GKG Golf Club, Gut Düneburg Golf Club and Berlin Wannsee Golf-Landclub.

During this time both as an Iceland National Team Coach and individually, he has worked with a wide variety of golfers, including success with Icelandic players Bjarka Pétursson, Guðmund Ágúst Kristjánsson and Andra Þór Björnsson, and DP World Tour and Challenge Tour players such as Phillip Mejow, all of which has seen him voted as the PGA of Iceland’s Teaching Professional of the year on four occasions.

A key ambition is to further enhance the current classification of players with different impairments into ‘sports classes’ that will ultimately help the golf industry to understand and attract more of the 15% of people worldwide who have a disability.

EDGA believes that it will not only be the players who benefit from the research findings, as tournament organisers, national governing bodies, PGA coaches, professionals working in sports medicine, and equipment manufacturers will also find the results of this study valuable in helping support the growing market of G4D (golf for the disabled).

The research began during back-to-back EDGA Tour events at the Amendoeira Golf Resort in Portugal in January. The EDGA development and eligibility team used a Trackman launch monitor to record an initial 1,100 golf shots from 25 EDGA golfers with a range of impairments, including paraplegia, limb amputation, limited mobility and neurological weakness. Metrics included capturing ‘smash factor’, spin rate and clubhead speed.

The plan is to analyse at least 200 golfers over the next year, including players with visual impairments. Research will continue at key EDGA Tour events in Scotland, Ireland and England, including at the inaugural The G4D Open, staged by The R&A with support from the DP World Tour, at Woburn in May. Video will also be used as the project grows, and it is hoped this initiative will continue far beyond the initial 200 players.

EDGA has extensive knowledge accrued over 22 years in the classification of golfers with a disability and their eligibility for different forms of competition. The not-for-profit organisation created many of the medical protocols used in player assessment worldwide, set up the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability (now run by The R&A and the USGA), and stages, or is associated with, more than 100 international G4D tournaments in a calendar year.

Ethics approval

Professor Eric Wallace from Ulster University helped develop the protocols of the new research, and gave ethics approval. The first results are expected to be published in 2023.

Leading the project, Dr Roger Hawkes, EDGA Executive Director of Eligibility, said: “To examine in detail the swing characteristics of a large cohort of players with a disability should give the golf industry far better understanding of how different impairments influence a golf swing, thus unlocking a door to the needs of more golfers.

“This research will help golf’s governing bodies in the important areas of classification, and sports classes, around different player impairments for events. Meanwhile, we can all help to include more new players with a disability to start in golf. This project can help more people with different health conditions to enjoy all the great things that the sport offers.”

PGA coach Mark Taylor, Head of Development for EDGA, led the first player session at Amendoeira. Mark said: “The ball flight and impact data collected from the cohort of players with various impairments will form a starting point for the ongoing research. Analysis of the data, specifically impact data and subsequent ball flight patterns, will help collate – as the research progresses and the cohort of players analysed increases – valuable information in categorising the sports classes.”

Evidence based research

Mark added: “The recognition of impact commonalities across the various impairments will also hugely assist in providing evidence based research to support our coach education programmes, subsequently better positioning coaches to provide improved coaching to golfers with limitations.”

Mark Taylor wanted to give special thanks to The R&A, and leading audit, tax and consulting firm RSM UK, for their continued support in EDGA’s research, and also to Srixon for providing golf balls throughout this intensive testing programme. All are strong supporters of EDGA as it seeks to change the lives of people with disability through the power of golf. The objective is to help 500,000 people with disability to try the game.

William Wynter Bee is a Sports and Exercise Medicine doctor based at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), and is the Medical Lead for the Legends Tour. Will is helping EDGA for the year to maximise the health benefits for the golfers taking part in the research.

Will said: “The opening of this research has already put us together with some competitive and talented golfers who love the game. Looking ahead, through the data and also the insights of 200 or more golfers, this will provide some fantastic learning for us. We hope we can support the players by way of strong findings from a health perspective, including advancing the cause of fitness and avoiding injury. It will be great if this leads to the golf industry being able to welcome more people with chronic health conditions to play, where regular exercise can make a major difference in their lives.”

PING have announced the introduction of the ChipR, a fully-engineered short-game solution that combines elements of a putter and wedge to help golfer’s improve performance around the greens.

The PING ChipR is available for custom fitting and pre-sell beginning today at authorised PING golf shops around the world.

The investment-cast, 431 stainless steel club is inspired by the PING Chipo, introduced by PING Founder Karsten Solheim in the late 1970s for golfers who lacked confidence with a traditional wedge and frequently struggled around the green.

“Golfers who fear chunking or blading their chip shots are really going to benefit from the new PING ChipR,” said John K. Solheim, PING CEO & President. “We’ve learned a lot since my grandfather, Karsten Solheim, invented the Chipo, but his insights were spot on as always. Our research indicates 1/3 of golfers who tested the ChipR saw better results compared to a traditional wedge. PGA of Slovenia President and Member Professional, Jure Čoh, gives his thoughts on the current state of play of golf in Slovenia following the recent success of PGA of Slovenia Member & Ambassador and Ladies European Tour Member, Pia Babnik…

The recent positive and extensive responses in our media, about the fantastic success of our Member, Pia Babnik, encouraged me to write the following thoughts…

I sincerely hope the fantastic success of Pia Babnik at the LPGA’s Chevron Championship was a kind of milestone in Slovenian golf. It is time for golf to be viewed more positively in our homeland and for some to finally stop doing injustice to it, by attributing some negative (and unfounded) adjectives.

Golf is (unfortunately still) assessed in our space through money-related stereotypes. But let’s be honest, today almost every leisure activity requires certain resources, especially sports. We are not here to argue about which sport is more expensive or cheaper, because it depends mainly on the level at which we take part.

It is interesting, however, that no one seems to have a problem when people buy bicycles for 10,000 euros (and there are many of them in Slovenia). Moreover, such equipment even adds “value”, prestige and credibility to the individual… On the other hand, any individual’s involvement in golf, where monetary costs are often low, is condemned by elitism or snobbery and the like. Of course, we can find extremes in both directions in both sports, but these are, for the point of this debate, completely unnecessary. I do not want to present cycling (or any other sport) in the wrong light, I just want to emphasise that we should be objective and not approach golf with inappropriate and untrue prejudices.

Along with tennis, golf has to be the most widespread and popular individual sport in the world. It is played by about 60 million people. I hope Pia’s successes inspire young and old to start playing golf. If we take cyclists for our own, ski jumpers for our own, skiers for our own, basketball player, [Luka] Dončić, for our own, then depending on our success, golf can also become a part of Slovenian culture and pride. Given that Slovenia presents itself in the world as a green, boutique and active destination, golf can be ideally placed in this strategy.

Golf and related values ​​are something we especially need in today’s world. Practicing and learning golf is one of the better “investments” parents can make for themselves and their children. You can play golf for life, it is suitable for all ages, move in nature, meet new people, take care of your health, develop concentration and focus, and is very suitable as a family activity… In addition to motor skills, we instil other important cultural and social values; honesty, integrity, respect for rules, consideration for others, patience, companionship, work habits, etiquette, responsibility, self-discipline, dignity, fair play and many more.

I always get horrified when I hear that golf and everything related to it is “elite”. By no means do I want to live in an environment where golf ideals and values ​​are just a matter of the elite, but something that will be part of our daily lives, especially in relationships with other people. I am convinced that by increasing the involvement of people in golf, we can also make society and relationships more enjoyable.

The Association of Professional Golf Teachers and Players of Slovenia – PGA of Slovenia – will continue to advocate for the promotion and proper development of golf. We will strive to present golf to new players in a pleasant, relevant and professional way, and we will continue to educate and raise awareness of existing players in accordance with golf’s ideals, values ​​and traditions.

In acknowledgement for its ongoing development activity and delivery of global projects and initiatives related to golf for the disabled, EDGA has been awarded the CPG’s 2021 President’s Award for Golf Development at this year’s CPG Annual Awards supported by Rolex.

EDGA [formerly the European Disabled Golf Association] is a volunteer organisation that aims to make the sport more inclusive for players with disability at every level, through the promotion and delivery of opportunities to sample, participate and compete in golf. It also advises and works with major stakeholders in the game including The R&A, The International Golf Federation, The European Tour and The European Golf Association on various issues related to golf for the disabled.

The President’s Award, which recognises outstanding golf development programmes, initiatives and grassroots projects, was presented to EDGA President, Tony Bennett: “To receive this award on behalf of EDGA and the team of volunteers that work so hard for the organisation and for golf for the disabled is humbling.

“This award vindicates our longstanding work to create change in golf for the disabled, build awareness about it and create pathways to sample, participate and compete in the sport regardless of ability. To be receiving this recognition from a highly respected golf organisation in the CPG is incredible and I offer my thanks to them for this award.”

CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell, commented: “Just recently at the EDGA Dubai Final, we saw a glimpse of the incredible and far-reaching work that EDGA is involved with around golf for the disabled, as well as getting to hear about the many inspiring stories from the golfers and in turn, the shared support they have for the organisation with the opportunities it has provided them in golf too.”

“Tony and the team of volunteers at EDGA are doing a terrific job to deliver the message of golf being for everybody, particularly in the area of golf for the disabled, so I could not think of a more worthy recipient of the 2021 edition of this award than EDGA.”

Additional to working alongside the DP World Tour to deliver its globally televised events, EDGA has designed and implemented coach education programmes for delivery in rehabilitation centres, hospitals and golf clubs internationally, as well as creating protocols for tournament administration, definitions of impairment and other programmes too. All of these initiatives are available to EDGA members and are designed to grow the number of golfers with disability around the world.

With the team’s best two 18-hole scores to count in each round, Team Italy’s round-by-round totals of 134, 141 and 141 at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort saw them set an almost unassailable target of 416 [22-under-par] for the rest of the field to try and reach. In the end, their 13-shot victory over Team Germany in second and Team Austria in third was illustrative of their impeccable and consistent performances throughout.

The ITC’s unique team format places emphasis on consistency of performances, ensuring the strongest team of three PGA Professionals from CPG’s 43 Member Countries is found. “Having contributed to the totals on the first two days, I said to the guys it was their turn on the final day” joked Molteni. “Whilst I played well personally, as a collective we were phenomenal this week.”

On the team’s initial reaction to the win, Maestroni commented: “We are obviously delighted by this victory, and for me personally to share it with my friends is fantastic. There is no doubt we will be celebrating over the coming days as we bring the trophy back to Italy.”

Yet despite the initial and inevitable jubilations, team captain Andrea Perrino was quick to recognise the wider significance of this win for golf in Italy: “We really hope this win will put golf on TV screens and on the front of newspapers and across the wider media landscape. We have had tremendous success in other sports like football, but its popularity is more widespread than golf right now. This result can convince many people that golf is a sport for them.”

In the Team Shield – an event that runs alongside the ITC that is specifically for CPG’s smaller Member Country PGAs with 100 members or less – Team Slovakia [Juraj Zvarik, Jan Keher and Adam Puchmelter] defended the title that they won in 2019 in comprehensive fashion, pipping runners-up Team Poland with a final score total of 437 [one-under-par].

Gregory Molteni and Andrea Perrino’s scores of 70 (-3) and 71 (-2) respectively were enough to keep the Italians ahead of a strong European contingent heading into the third and final round tomorrow.

“It would be great if we could win tomorrow on behalf of the PGA of Italy because we have never won the ITC before” commented Perrino.

“Playing on behalf of our PGA is an honour that has clearly pushed our performances to another level this week and I could not be happier to be sharing the week with such great teammates in Nicola and Gregory. I think we have a strong team and we will certainly give it our best shot to bring the trophy back to Italy tomorrow”.

In round two of the Team Shield, Team Slovakia extended their lead over Team Poland after a second-round score of 152 (+6) gave Juraj Svarik, Jan Keher and Adam Puchmelter a 15-shot margin heading into the final round.

With the two best 18-hole scores to count towards the team total each day, the exclusion of Perrino’s three-under-par 70 demonstrated how strong of a showing this was for the Italians, who have come very close before in this event and were certainly looking to make an early statement this time around.

Maestroni capped off Molteni’s four-under par 69 (four-under-par) with a scintillating 65 (eight-under-par) that was built around a carefully planned strategy and some quite mesmerising putting: “It is a great layout and with a good strategy, you can get a score going. Fortunately, I have two very strong teammates who are very straight off the tee and it ensured we could shoot the lowest round possible today.”

The players were quick to attribute their performances to a strong team ethic: “We are very good friends and I think that is really important. It means a lot to be representing the PGA of Italy and we are grateful for the opportunity to compete in the International Team Championship here at Penina”, commented Perrino. This was echoed by Molteni: “We are Italian, so we love to play as a team rather than just as individuals. Two years ago, we finished second but this year we have a very consistent team and I like our chances.”

In the Team Shield, Team Slovakia (Juraj Svarik, Adam Puchmelter and Jan Keher) also shared similar success after the first round, as they collectively shot 144 (71 from Svarik and 73 from Puchmelter) to lead Team Poland by 11 strokes heading into the second round.

LISTEN: The Diversity and Inclusion Panel

The CPG are currently working with EDGA (formerly the European Disabled Golf Association) in an effort to improve the sport for people from disabled backgrounds. EDGA are a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation that aims to increase opportunities for disabled people to sample, participate and compete in golf, and provides advice surrounding disabled golf to a variety of golf’s governing bodies.

The organisation was founded in 2000, growing substantially to incorporate 20 national federations, with members located across the globe. Focusing on growing the game, the organisation has designed and implemented coach education programmes for rehabilitation centres, hospitals and golf clubs. All of these initiatives are available to its members, as are protocols for tournament administration, definitions of impairment, and other resources to help grow the numbers of golfers with disability around the world.

At the 2020 CPG Annual Congress, listeners were fortunate to have EDGA President, Tony Bennett, attend for the panel session on Diversity and Inclusion. Tony’s invaluable insights were eye-opening and informative such as the issue of unconscious bias, and how through the handicap system, golf has the potential to be the most inclusive of all sports.

The CPG are also committed to improving increased participation and membership opportunities for women’s golf. In 2018, the organisation marked this commitment by signing The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter, a global initiative that has gained significant support and momentum from across the golfing world, with over 50 federations, 30 organisations and PGAs, and numerous other golf facilities, making their own pledge to further the women’s game.

This work was recognised at the 2020 Annual Congress when it was awarded with the CPG’s President’s Award, accepted by The R&A’s Assistant Director of Golf Development Jackie Davidson, on behalf of The R&A.

CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell, reiterated the importance of change, saying “The R&A’s leadership is so important in driving change in our sport to ensure that it becomes more accessible, appealing and inclusive and we congratulate them on this initiative. It is a great example of how golf’s national and international organisations are increasing collaboration by collectively getting behind significant initiatives and programmes around the globe.

“Having made our own Women in Golf pledge at the time of launch and encouraged our Member PGAs to do likewise, we recognise the importance of the Charter, and support its goal of encouraging women across all levels and backgrounds to enjoy golf and thrive within the sport.”

The 2020 tournament saw the largest field yet, with 25 teams competing alongside a strong line-up of PGA Professionals as well as former Tour winners, current Ladies European Tour players and MENA Tour golfers. It proved a thrilling finale with the contest going to the final hole and concluded with British professional, Robbie Busher, rallying from a four-shot deficit on the final day to secure the victory.

The Pro-Am will take place shortly after the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, meaning that participants will have the chance to follow in the footsteps of the world’s best golfers from the DP World Tour, with the Professionals competing for a total prize find of €30,000*.

Participants will also be able to enjoy accommodation at a range of luxurious venues, including the W Abu Dhabi, the Crowne Plaza and the Hilton Abu Dhabi all on Yas Island. Activities on offer will include a Go-Karting experience at the famous Yas Marina circuit, plus other world-class hospitality and exquisite culinary experiences during the welcome reception, lunches and gala dinner.

For the first time in the history of Ukrainian golf, golf coaches were trained in line with the Confederation of Professional Golf’s [CPG] international level 1 coach education program.

Together with the Ukrainian Golf Federation, the PGA of Ukraine (a CPG Member Country) coordinated and contributed to the delivery of the programme in collaboration with the CPG. Beginning in June online and culminating in a 5-day in-person workshop, students were involved in a number of different activities including theoretical classes and additional external learning. Each trainee also had access to the CPG Learning Institute, which contains training materials, assessments and deadlines to ensure high quality training and educational delivery for their personal development.

On October 24, the 5-day training at the H Club concluded. Led and managed by PGA of Holland members Jim van Heuven van Staereling and Wiebe Gisen, as well as the CPG’s Director for Community Coaching & Parents in Golf, David Kearney, the workshop was attended by 29 participants in total, consisting of both current and future coaches.

The training included theoretical, practical parts and assessment. For the first three days, there was a lot of tutor-led insight and information, alongside discussions and application. The trainees then focused on improving their own coaching delivery through the application of visual, kinesthetic and audio teaching aids; they studied the impact of ball flight laws; and also developed their coaching delivery skills for juniors, adults, beginners and more.

At the end of the 5 days, each participant was then assessed on various disciplines including golf clubs and technology, the rules of golf, and a group coaching lesson. Upon successful completion of the programme, each participant receives official certification of their Level 1 training.

Ruslan Harkavenko, President of PGA Ukraine, said, “Since my presidency at PGA Ukraine, the number one task has been to give every coach the opportunity to receive an international education. It took us two years to do this, first, it was the Parents in Golf training program and seminars for golf coaches and activators. And this year – Level 1 for coaches. I am grateful to my team for the organization. And most importantly, such training makes us and all members of the PGA even stronger as a team, as we learn to work together and help each other. Thank you to the CPG, all the tutors for their cooperation and impeccable work, as well as the management of H Club for the opportunity to conduct training on the golf courses.”
