For PGA Professionals, travel is no longer just about organising tee times – it’s about curating experiences that deliver value for players, create lasting relationships, and open up new commercial opportunities. The most successful coaches are those who can blend performance, lifestyle, and connection into something that feels memorable and repeatable.

CPG Collection Member Sotogrande offers a compelling case study in how this can be done well. With its combination of world-class golf, modern academy facilities, wellness, and a broader lifestyle ecosystem, it provides a blueprint for how destinations can support pro-led travel – and how professionals can, in turn, elevate the experiences they offer their clients.

In this conversation, Sotogrande’s Marketing Director, Rita Jordão, shares how the destination has been shaped to support both elite performance and group-based experiences, and what PGA Professionals, clubs and academies can take from its approach to building loyalty, engagement, and long-term value through travel.

1. How do The Alto Club and the new Golf Academy reinforce Sotogrande’s positioning as a fully integrated golf and lifestyle destination?

The Alto Club and Golf Academy adds a different element to the golf offering that Sotogrande didn’t necessarily have before: a more relaxed, open, and enjoyable way into the game. It is modern, current, and more casual in spirit.

Sotogrande is already a renowned location as Spain’s hub for world-class golf, and among the best in Europe and globally. That positioning is unquestionable.

What we wanted to do with The Alto Club was complement that existing offer with something fresh and, importantly, something that, from a local community perspective, allows a segment of people who may never have embraced golf to engage with it. As golfers, we all know the barriers to enter the sport. Our aim is to break those barriers and make it easier and more fun for people to take up the game in a relaxed way.

That is particularly relevant for younger generations or children and, without falling into clichés, also for female golfers who are sometimes left out because they didn’t start young or don’t yet have the same level of play as their partners. We want to give them the opportunity to embrace golf in a natural, casual, and fun way.

2. With Suzann Pettersen as Global Ambassador and Mimi Rhodes now on the LPGA Tour, how important is elite performance in shaping Sotogrande’s brand story?

Elite performance has always been woven into the fabric of Sotogrande. It’s not a new chapter we’re adding to the story, it has always been there.

Mimi Rhodes is a perfect example. She grew up here, learned the game here, and developed her talent within this community. Today, at just 24, she’s competing on the LPGA Tour as one of Europe’s most exciting young players. That journey, from local fairways to the world stage, says a great deal about what Sotogrande represents. It shows that this is not only a destination for great golf, but it can be a place where great golfers are formed.

Historically, between Real Club Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, and La Reserva Club, Sotogrande has consistently been connected to elite competition, both at professional and amateur level. But what makes it meaningful is that this commitment has never been limited to elite sport in a purely commercial or social sense. It has always been extended to the grassroots.

La Cañada, for example – the oldest public golf course in Spain – is unknown to most on an international level, but this local club that was created through a collaborative effort between the town hall, Sotogrande, and Valderrama to ensure that the local community had access to the game, continues to generate top players in the professional game. Angel Ayora is one of the most recent examples, and this is a powerful reminder that the foundations of excellence are built locally.

Our new academy at The Alto Club, and ambassadors such as Suzann Pettersen alongside Mimi, reinforce that journey from grassroots through to global stage. Elite performance strengthens the brand, of course, but more importantly it reflects our long-standing philosophy to nurture the game at every level.

Golf in Sotogrande is for the future major champion and equally for the 20-handicap player who simply loves the game. That inclusivity alongside quality, is what defines us.

3. What makes Sotogrande and The Alto Club a credible long term training base for touring professionals like Mimi Rhodes?

Sotogrande is not a destination that has appeared overnight. It has been shaped over six decades around the game of golf. That heritage carries weight with touring professionals.

Then there is the quality. When people speak about the south of Spain, there is often a predictable reference to sunshine and climate. Of course, the weather matters, but the sun is just an expectation here. Players who choose Sotogrande are looking for something far more substantial. World-class conditions, year-round consistency, and facilities that genuinely support performance.

In terms of golf courses, I don’t need to say it myself. It’s the rankings and the raters who consistently position the courses within Sotogrande at the very top of Spanish golf. Between La Reserva Club, Real Club Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, we have three courses at the very top of the national rankings. That concentration of quality within one destination is extremely rare, anywhere in Europe.

The practice facilities are equally important. Touring professionals need space, precision, and variety in their training environment, and that infrastructure is embedded here. From short-game areas to performance gyms and recovery facilities.

But what truly differentiates Sotogrande, and The Alto Club in particular, is privacy. Players can step away from the intensity of tour life and focus completely on their preparation. There are no distractions, no interruptions, just the space to work. That same discretion extends beyond the fairways. Many professionals choose to live here and raise their families here because the sense of calm, security, and privacy is consistent throughout the community.

4. How does SO/ Sotogrande Hotel & Spa complement the golf offering for players looking to train, recover or host groups?

All elements that are complimentary of golf are becoming increasingly important not only for professional golfers, but also for amateurs.

Having a top-quality spa and gym as part of the overall offering here is really significant. When you combine the SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort with the 18 holes of The Alto Club, the new Golf Academy, and one of Spain’s top courses, La Reserva Club as a complementary course, there are very few places that can compete. Particularly from a professional perspective and for professional groups.

We are receiving hundreds of requests from professional golfers, as well as from coaches of professionals and elite players, to use Sotogrande as a base. That demand is one of the biggest proofs of the quality that we have to offer.

5. How do you balance Sotogrande’s role as a high-performance golf environment with its appeal as a luxury resort destination?

I see those two elements as very compatible and complementary. A high-performance golf environment does not clash with a resort lifestyle, in fact it’s quite the opposite.

In actual fact, I think that elite golf is increasingly moving in that direction. Professional golfers are travelling more and more with their families, partners and children, and with that there is a requirement for wider resort and lifestyle amenities.

That is also why The Alto Club feels so relevant now. Golfers are not simply looking to hit balls on a range, play 18 holes, and repeat the same, day after day. They want to get more out of their trip, and more from the overall experience. We are seeing more couples and families travelling to golf destinations than ever before.

The traditional image of golf as a male-dominated sport has changed, it is changing, and will continue to change.

Our objective is to offer a product that is genuinely relevant to that evolution, and it is being extremely well received internationally, nationally, and within the local community.

As she prepares for her inaugural season on the LPGA Tour, Mimi Rhodes returns to the special place that helped to hone her game, Sotogrande, the latest CPG Collection Member, to get ready for the exciting next milestone of her career.

Fresh off a standout 2025 season on the Ladies European Tour, Rhodes enters this new chapter having firmly established herself among the elite of European golf and with her sights now set on the world’s most competitive women’s tour.

Competing on the Ladies European Tour, she claimed three victories, earned Rookie of the Year honours, and finished second on the Order of Merit, with performances that paved the way for her successful passage through LPGA Q-Series and entry onto the LPGA Tour.

“Coming back to Sotogrande at this moment in my career feels incredibly special. It doesn’t feel like the start of something new, but rather a continuation of the journey that began here” she explains. Long before titles and international recognition, Sotogrande was the place where Mimi grew up, found her sense of home, and spent the most formative years of her life. Today, as she reaches the most exciting phase of her professional career, those early years in Sotogrande remain deeply woven into the amazing player she has become.

As official touring professional ambassador for Sotogrande, Rhodes continues to return regularly to the estate for ongoing training and preparation at The Alto Club and new Golf Academy, both part of the SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort.

Together, these facilities offer a practical training base for professional golfers, alongside Toptracer technology providing clear feedback on ball flight and shot data to support focused, repeatable practice. Blending elite training with a strong emphasis on wellbeing, recovery and balance, Sotogrande provides an environment that supports sustained excellence at the highest level of the game.

Reflecting on her journey, Rhodes added: “Sotogrande has always felt like home to me. I grew up here, practising, learning and developing as both a golfer and a person. To be able to come back now, and prepare here for the move to the LPGA Tour, is incredibly special. It’s an environment that gives me everything I need to perform, but also to reset and stay grounded.”

Rita Jordão, Director of Marketing at Sotogrande SA, commented: “We are deeply proud to see Mimi’s journey come full circle in Sotogrande. Her personal connection to the estate makes this relationship incredibly special to us. Mimi embodies the spirit and values of Sotogrande, and we are honoured to support her as she steps into an exciting new chapter on the international stage.”

As golf professionals increasingly look beyond traditional coaching trips, destinations that combine training, lifestyle, wellness, and family appeal are becoming ever more important.

In the latest episode of The Spin Podcast, we sat down with Stéphane Menou, General Manager of SO/ Sotogrande and The Alto Club, to explore how golf travel is evolving — and what PGA Professionals can do to make the most of it.

With over 30 years of international experience managing resorts across the world, Menou brings a refreshingly practical perspective. His message is clear: golf travel works best when it delivers a complete experience, not just tee times and practice sessions.

At SO/ Sotogrande, that philosophy is reflected in what Menou repeatedly describes as a “360° offer” – blending elite golf facilities, a modern academy environment, wellness, gastronomy, and family-friendly amenities into one destination. For golf professionals hosting trips, this creates far more flexibility: coaching-focused mornings, relaxed afternoons, wellness-led recovery, and social evenings that appeal to both players and non-golfing companions.

A key development is the newly rebranded Alto Club Golf Academy, led by Suzann Pettersen, alongside the purpose-built Pro Zone Training Centre. Rather than positioning this as an elite-only space, Menou is clear that the goal is accessibility – supporting touring professionals, national teams, club golfers, juniors, and families alike. Par-3 golf, night-time practice using Toptracer technology, and flexible group capacity allow coaches to design trips that balance performance and enjoyment.

Crucially for PGA Professionals, Menou highlights that great destinations are built with pros in mind. Coaches act as trusted filters for players and clients; if they believe in the product, the destination gains credibility. That’s why SO/ Sotogrande has invested heavily in facilities that professionals can genuinely use – from structured training environments and fitting areas to recovery tools, wellness services, and adaptable programming.

Towards the end of the conversation, Menou offers perhaps the most valuable takeaway for coaches planning trips: don’t underuse the destination. Encourage players to bring family, explore nearby courses, enjoy the lifestyle elements, and see the trip as more than just a golf camp. This not only increases satisfaction, but also strengthens repeat business and word-of-mouth recommendations.

With year-round accessibility, strong transport links, and a dense cluster of world-class courses nearby, SO/ Sotogrande and The Alto Club are positioning themselves as a reference point for modern golf travel – one that aligns performance, wellbeing, and commercial opportunity.

Great coaching isn’t about having more answers – it’s about asking better questions. Over time, the most effective coaches tend to converge on the same realisation: players don’t fail because of a lack of technique, but because systems, environments, and development pathways don’t truly fit the individual.

Joe Brazil’s coaching journey spans more than 30 years, four continents, and every level of the game – from grassroots juniors to elite international pathways. Now a PGA Advanced Professional at Yas Acres within the Viya Golf Performance Institute at CPG Collection Member, Yas Links Abu Dhabi, Joe brings a perspective shaped not by trends or quick fixes, but by repeated exposure to what actually holds up under pressure, across cultures, climates, and competitive contexts.

This Q&A explores the practical lessons that emerge when coaching is viewed as a long-term development process rather than a short-term intervention. From junior pathways and women’s participation to cultural adaptability and sustainable performance models, Joe’s insights offer a useful case study for PGA Professionals looking to build programmes and coaching businesses that endure.

……………………………………..

Your coaching career spans more than three decades and four continents. How have those global experiences shaped your coaching philosophy, and what do you bring from them into your work at Yas Acres today?

JB – Wow – three decades really have flown by!

Having spent more than 30 years coaching across four continents, I’ve learned that elite golf performance is never a one-size-fits-all approach.

Early in my career, I focused heavily on technique. However, working at the highest levels taught me that lasting improvement comes from understanding the individual player – their movement patterns, decision-making, competitive demands, and mindset under pressure. My global experience sharpened my ability to adapt and read people. Different cultures, communication styles, and learning approaches all influence performance. In an individual sport like golf, trust and clarity between coach and player are essential, and I found that strong relationships are particularly important for success in Asia.

I believe sustainable performance is built on strong fundamentals, efficient movement, and repeatable processes – not short-term fixes. I’ve seen technology advance significantly over the years, and while data is a valuable tool, it is most effective when aligned with feel, intent and competitive context.

In my role at Yas Acres as a PGA Advanced Professional, I work with players of all nationalities, cultures, and abilities. That global experience fits perfectly here in the UAE, and we’re fortunate to have a very passionate and dedicated team at Yas Acres.

You’ve worked closely with junior golfers throughout your career – from HSBC Wee Wonders in the UK to elite development pathways in South Korea and the USA. Why is junior and long-term player development so important to the future of the game, and how is that reflected in the programmes at the Viya Golf Performance Institute?

JB – I’ve worked closely with junior golfers since turning professional in 1993. I was Head Coach for HSBC Wee Wonders when players such as Tommy Fleetwood, Charley Hull, and Tyrrell Hatton were competing in the Wee Wonders British Championships. Coaching juniors has always been a passion of mine.

Developing elite juniors for success in collegiate golf was a dream role for me in the USA, where I spent three years as Director of Instruction at an elite junior academy on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. During that time, we helped players progress to collegiate golf – one being Ewen Ferguson, who has since gone on to achieve great success on the DP World Tour.

Junior golf is essential to the future of the game. It develops not only skilled players, but also the values that define golf – discipline, integrity, resilience, and respect. At the Yas Acres Junior Golf Programme, our focus is on long-term development rather than short-term results. We teach sound fundamentals and athletic movement in a positive, fun, and age-appropriate environment. Just as importantly, we help juniors build confidence, independence, and a genuine love for the game.

By developing players first and golfers second, the Viya Golf Performance Institute at Yas Acres is helping to grow the game and build a strong future for golf – one swing at a time.

Since returning to Abu Dhabi and joining Yas Acres, what excites you most about the opportunity here – both in terms of coaching and the wider golf ecosystem being built in the UAE?

JB – After spending the last five winters coaching at Europe’s busiest academy in London with N1 Golf, I was very excited to return to year-round sunshine in Abu Dhabi. I love my job, but after ten hours of coaching with cold feet, the climate was definitely a big factor!

I was also excited to work again alongside Karl Whitehead, our Cluster General Manager for Viya Golf, who is truly moving the needle here in Abu Dhabi.

Golf is booming in the UAE, and what excites me most about Yas Acres is the opportunity to be part of a club that values people, development and community just as much as performance. With world-class practice facilities, Yas Acres is an outstanding place to coach and develop golfers from around the world.

The wider Abu Dhabi golf ecosystem is ambitious, connected, and future-focused. There is a clear commitment to growing the game, developing talent and creating pathways for the next generation. Being part of an environment that invests in the future of golf while maintaining high standards today is genuinely inspiring.

Women’s participation in golf continues to grow, and Viya places a strong emphasis on creating inclusive pathways for female players. From your experience as a coach, how important is it to actively support women in the game, and how is that reflected in the programmes and culture at Yas Acres?

JB – Women’s participation in golf continues to rise, and Viya is leading the way by creating inclusive pathways that give female players every opportunity to thrive.

At Yas Acres, this is reflected in our ladies’ development programmes and Ladies Golf Coffee Mornings, where I encourage, support, and challenge women to reach their full potential in a fun and social environment. Together, we’re not only growing participation, we’re helping to shape the future of women’s golf in the UAE.

In Golf World’s definitive Top 100 European Courses – published in early November – Sotogrande’s venues continue to impress, with two of the three courses featured climbing higher in the standings.

Real Club Sotogrande rises to #10, strengthening its position among Europe’s elite; La Reserva Club advances to #52, an impressive result despite several major new entries to this year’s list; and Real Club Valderrama remains a benchmark of European championship golf pedigree at #6 in the list.

Golf World’s accompanying supplement ranks Sotogrande among Europe’s most exceptional golf destinations. La Reserva Club, which climbs in this year’s ranking, is praised for Cabell B. Robinson’s design that “makes superb use of its hillside terrain” and is “presented to an exceptional standard.” Meanwhile, Real Club Sotogrande secures its place in Europe’s top ten as a “Robert Trent Jones Snr classic presented immaculately,” recognised for delivering an “enduringly high-calibre experience.”

Sotogrande’s collective strength is further endorsed by National Club Golfer’s European Top 100 Resorts list, where the destination holds firm at #3, retaining its title as the highest-ranked golf resort in Spain. The upcoming edition again celebrates Sotogrande’s exceptional blend of world-class golf, Andalusian lifestyle, and timeless appeal.

“These latest rankings confirm Sotogrande’s enduring appeal as Europe’s leading golf destination,” said Rita Jordão, Director of Marketing for Sotogrande SA. “We are proud of the continued recognition across our courses in Sotogrande, particularly for La Reserva Club, which embodies the evolution of the Sotogrande experience: elegant, contemporary, and uncompromising in quality.”

Visitors can experience Sotogrande’s world-class golf first-hand, with limited tee times available at Real Club Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande, and La Reserva Club. The best way to secure access to these exclusive courses is through a stay-and-play golf package with the multi-awarded SO/ Sotogrande Spa and Golf Resort.

The resort is also home to The Alto Club and Golf Academy, the destination’s fourth course, recently relaunched after a complete transformation of the former Almenara course to offer a relaxed, yet high quality, accessible experience for players of all levels with golf legend Suzann Pettersen as global ambassador; a truly innovative and bold concept – the first of its kind in Spain.

In a world where wellness is high on the agenda and traditional sports are constantly reinventing themselves to stay relevant, golf holds a uniquely powerful position – especially for coaches.

As the conversation around physical and mental wellbeing gains traction, golf’s health benefits are more than just an added bonus; they’re a strategic advantage.

Here’s how you, as a golf coach, can harness the power of Golf & Health messaging to support your business goals, generate new revenue, and connect with wider audiences.

……………….

1. Reach New Audiences with Purposeful Health Messaging

Golf is no longer just for the seasoned swing enthusiast. Its combination of low-impact exercise, outdoor exposure, and social interaction makes it ideal for:

Older adults seeking an active lifestyle that supports joint health and mobility

Beginners who may find traditional gyms intimidating or repetitive

Health-conscious individuals looking for new ways to stay active and mindful

By positioning your coaching services as a gateway to these benefits, you open the door to new customer segments – many of whom may not have previously considered golf.

🟢 Try this: Create a “Health & Golf Taster Session” aimed at beginners or older adults. Promote it through local wellbeing groups, walking clubs, or even local GP surgeries.

……………….

2. Add Depth to Your Marketing and Communications

Yes, golf improves your swing – but it also improves your sleep, lowers stress, boosts brain function, and supports heart health. Those are benefits worth talking about.

Integrating these themes into your website, social media, and email campaigns can help:

Tell a more holistic, values-driven story

Differentiate your coaching business from others

Encourage emotional connections with your audience

🟢 Try this: Share testimonials or short stories from clients who have experienced health benefits through golf, especially those who started for health reasons rather than competition.

……………….

3. Align with Public Health Partners and Unlock New Funding Streams

Many local authorities and charities are looking for partners who can help deliver on community health and wellbeing targets. Golf – especially when led by qualified professionals – ticks a lot of boxes.

By aligning your programmes with these goals, you may unlock:

New funding streams for health or physical activity initiatives

Referrals from healthcare providers or local wellness campaigns

Media opportunities showcasing your work within the community

🟢 Try this: Develop a short proposal outlining how your sessions support mental and physical wellbeing, and share it with local councils, Active Partnerships, or health charities.

……………….

4. Position Yourself as a Wellness Professional, Not Just a Swing Coach

Incorporating Golf & Health messaging into your coaching doesn’t mean changing everything you do – it means reframing the value you already offer. You’re not just improving someone’s backswing; you’re supporting their overall quality of life.

That kind of impact builds stronger client relationships, long-term loyalty, and referrals that go far beyond the first tee.

……………….

Final Thought

As a golf coach, you’re uniquely placed at the intersection of sport and wellbeing. By integrating Golf & Health messaging into your approach, you’re not just helping people play better – you’re helping them live better. And in doing so, you’re building a business that’s more resilient, more relevant, and more rewarding.

……………….

New research from the Melanoma Fund, the UK’s leading provider of sun protection resources for individuals, sports groups and outdoor clubs, has revealed a clear need for better sun safety in children’s outdoor sports and activities.

The UK study found that most (72%) of coaches, teachers, and outdoor leaders are not properly trained on sun or heat protection, and 43% feel unsupported in protecting the young people they work with. Rising temperatures and increasing UV risks should raise concern and require action.

The Melanoma Fund conducted the research to mark Sun Awareness Week, 12th – 18th May 2025, and increase understanding of the challenges coaches, leaders, and teachers face around sun safety for the children in their care.

Key findings include:

72% of coaches, leaders, and teachers have never received any training on sun or heat protection

Only 16% of organisations have a separate sun protection policy

43% of those working with children outdoors say they feel unsupported or poorly supported by their organisation

Just 4% believe all the children they work with truly understand sun safety

80% of respondents would like access to free or discounted sunscreen

Over two-thirds reported sun or heat-related incidents, including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion

“These findings are concerning, but unfortunately, not surprising. They highlight why we support this sector with free, practical sun safety resources. Although so many leaders are on the case and proactive, these findings are a wake-up call for everyone, including parents who entrust their children to organised outdoor activities,” says Michelle Baker, CEO of the Melanoma Fund.

“With over two-thirds of respondents reporting sun or heat-related incidents – including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion—it’s obvious that action is needed,” adds Michelle Baker. “We provide clear, practical solutions that can help address this issue, and ultimately, protect the next generation from skin cancer.”

Sun safety habits begin in childhood, as does melanoma. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life. Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults, which makes it even more crucial that we protect children from harmful UV exposure.

Parents also play a vital role in setting a good example for sun safety. By showing children how to properly apply sunscreen, rather than just smearing it on their faces, they help teach kids how to protect themselves effectively. This is crucial when children participate in outdoor activities.

Outdoor coaches and leaders are uniquely positioned to lead by example and instil sun-safe habits early on. But this new data shows that only 11% of coaches regularly apply sunscreen in front of children, and just 19% wear a sun hat consistently.

To help organisations and individuals address gaps in education, awareness, and support, the Melanoma Fund offers two key resources:

Sunguarding Course: A free online course that offers accreditation and 3 CIMSPA CPD points, designed to help anyone working outdoors understand and manage the risks of UV exposure.

Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code: Aimed at empowering organisations to create and implement sun safety policies specifically for children in outdoor sports and activities, educating both adults and children.

Sport England is focused on increasing participation in youth sports and physical activity, with great success. However, UV risks in outdoor activities remain largely unaddressed. Backed by hundreds of national governing bodies of sport, the Melanoma Fund is pushing for more awareness and action, protecting young participants from these risks to prevent skin cancer in the next generation.

Bigger than ever

“It was a Congress bigger than ever before, with more speakers too, which was fantastic,” said Murray, “It was a great opportunity to get together and then think about the health benefits of golf – how we can promote health through major events, how we can help people be at their best, maximising performance and decreasing illness and injury. Then it’s just about giving everyone the opportunity to play golf.

“I think everyone who attended is very passionate about golf and health, very knowledgeable as well, and I really enjoyed the two days.”

Stephen Gallacher, the Ryder Cup star and four-time DP World Tour winner, was among those who took part in the discussions as delegates learned about the mental fitness of competing at the highest level.

Gallacher, who played for 28 years on the DP World Tour, said, “The great thing about the conference was that it was all about golf, all about the positives of the sport for longevity of life. You can start at such a young age and you can still be playing at such a late age.

“It was important also to discuss how much the golfing world has changed, how much the health side has come into it. It’s changed a lot since I was a kid, like proper advice on nutrition, recovery and hydration. There is so much data and technology to plot their goals. As the home of golf in Scotland, it was also fitting to be in such a beautiful place to talk about it.”

Key topics

Attendees also delved into key topics like injury prevention and management, adaptations for disabled golfers, nutrition, strength and conditioning. Research presented from Finland, Sweden and Scotland highlighted that:

Golf can provide health enhancing physical activity for people of all ages

Regular physical activity achieved through golf can help prevent and treat more than 40 major chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, depression, anxiety and dementia

Golf also promotes mental well-being, social connections and connection with nature

Golf has additional benefits compared to walking

Fantastic opportunity

Maree Todd, Sport Minister at the Scottish Government, said, “Regular physical activity and participation in sport is one of the best things you can do for physical, mental and social health. The Congress was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and experience, to celebrate what golf is accomplishing and to understand barriers to participation and how we can work to remove them.”

Dr Julia Kettinen, researcher and Golf Exercise Medicine Specialist, added, “Our research highlights that golf can help people achieve the physical activity they need. Golf also kept senior golfers active during the pandemic and supported their quality of life.

“Even a single 18-hole round can offer significant cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, particularly for older adults, compared to regular walking. Globally, more and more people are playing golf – over 100 million now – which is great for both individuals and populations.”

Improving mental health

Although there is compelling evidence of mental health and wellbeing benefits through golf and other sports, life as a professional athlete can be incredibly demanding, with pressure to perform, much time away from friends and family, and at times intense and unwanted scrutiny in social media and in the media.

The golfing industry has recognised these challenges, and conducted research with the players to implement mental health and well-being toolkits, emergency action plans, mind gyms, and a network of specialists for the players, collaborating with tennis and Formula 1 experts who also have intensive travel schedules.

Dr Phil Hopley, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cognacity, who has been instrumental as Mental Fitness Coach with the McLaren F1 Team on their journey from midfielders to World Champions said, “I felt honoured to be at the conference.

“We’ve all got mental health, but it changes sometimes across the course of a week, sometimes during the course of the day. So we can be flourishing or can be mentally well, or we can be struggling a bit, have a mental health problem or a mental disorder.

Collaborative work

“There are so many mental and physical benefits to participating in sport, and we know how important the mind is to being at your best, be that on the Formula 1 track, playing in the Champions League, playing in a golf major or just in life in general.

“Cognacity are delighted to be working with The R&A and the DP World Tour providing psychology and mental fitness support to players, caddies and Tour staff. The untimely passing of top professional golfer Grayson Murray last year was a painful reminder of how challenging life on Tour can be. That is why the collaborative work that golf is prioritising with IOC mental health experts and the provision of industry leading facilities like the Mental Fitness Centre at the Dubai Desert Classic is so important.”

Alyson Mckechin, Head of Golf It! in Glasgow, was also among the speakers in the impressive surroundings of the Royal College, fresh from recently winning Coach of the Year at the Scottish Golf Awards.

Gallacher, the founder of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation which continues to blossom, summed the sessions up. “Our mission is to help and encourage golfers to live a healthy life and enjoy their golf,” he added. “This scientific Congress coming to Scotland was great as it helps us understand the health benefits, hear about how golf is even being prescribed now in Scotland and further afield, and also look at supporting the mental health of players.

“I have had some incredible highs like winning in Dubai, India and Scotland, and being on the winning side at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, but life in professional sport can be lonely and tough, so the work on mental health is so important”.

Dr Phil Hopley, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cognacity, who has been instrumental as Mental Fitness Coach with the McLaren F1 Team on their journey from midfielders to World Champions shared:

“There are so many mental and physical benefits to participating in sport, and we know how important the mind is to being at your best, be that on the Formula 1 track, playing in the Champions League, playing in a Major or just in life in general. Cognacity are delighted to be working with The R&A and the DP World Tour providing psychology and mental fitness support to players, caddies and Tour staff.

“The untimely passing of top professional golfer Grayson Murray last year was a painful reminder of how challenging life on Tour can be. That is why the collaborative work that golf is prioritising with IOC mental health experts and the provision of industry leading facilities like the Mental Fitness Centre at the Dubai Desert Classic is so important.”

CPG ANNUAL AWARDS SUPPORTED BY ROLEX

………………

Achilles V. Constantakopoulos, the Chairman of TEMES S.A. – developers of Costa Navarino, is the latest recipient of the CPG Special Recognition Award.

His enduring support of the CPG and its activities has earned him the Award that looks to acknowledge the help and support shown by individuals and organisations that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to assist the CPG and its Member Countries.

Constantakopoulos has continuously supported the organisation since Costa Navarino – the sustainably driven destination in Greece’s southwest Peloponnese – was launched. The destination has hosted and partnered with the CPG on events and activities, and has worked with the CPG on Costa Navarino’s own Pro-Am now in the form of the AEGEAN Messinia Pro-Am, whilst also playing a vital role in the development of the PGA of Greece, its Members and the sport overall in Greece.

“ I’m truly honoured to receive this award and deeply grateful to CPG for your support and our longstanding partnership in making Costa Navarino in Greece, a world renowned golf destination,” said Constantakopoulos during his acceptance speech at the CPG Festival of Golf at Saïdia Resorts in Morocco.

“Our shared love for the game and common values have been the foundation of this enduring relationship with CPG and its Member Countries. We remain committed to investing in excellence, offering both professionals and amateurs an unparalleled experience that blends the unspoiled beauty of the Messinian landscape, warm hospitality, and world class facilities.

“Your contribution in putting Costa Navarino on the map as a premier golf destination has been great.”

Costa Navarino features 4 world class golf courses and has been named “World’s Best Golf Venue” at the World Golf Awards. The destination is also home to four 5* hotels: The Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, W Costa Navarino and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, while also featuring luxury private residences, and many year-round activities and authentic experiences.

The founder of Costa Navarino, Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos and his best friend, founder of AEGEAN, Theodoros Vassilakis – also a recipient of the Special Recognition Award in 2015 – were able to create a lasting legacy for golf in Greece, which is something that Achilles V. Constantakopoulos has grasped and forged ahead with incredible dedication.

“As Theodore, Katia and the team at AEGEAN looked to further develop their fantastic Pro-Am and continue to put Greece on the golfing map, I was very fortunate to be introduced to Achilles and visit Costa Navarino with them all at the very beginning, and witness an amazing vision,” added CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

“Achilles has more than turned that vision into reality and we are so proud to be able to call them partners, but more importantly friends. What they have achieved is something extraordinary!”

CPG Member, the PGA of Greece, also continues to develop thanks in part at least to Costa Navarino’s creation/provision of opportunities for professionals to learn, work and compete.

Nitra has been involved in many facets of golf from coaching players of all levels of ability, owning and operating his own golf facility in Germany, to influencing the administration and development of the sport in his role with the PGA of Czech Republic.

Nitra took up golf in 1970 and at the time Czechoslovakia was the only communist country where golf could be played, with him relying on minoring countries or peoples’ rare trips abroad to access golf equipment.

With opportunities in golf being limited, he moved to Hamburg, Germany, in the mid 80s and completed his training under professional Hans Heiser who himself contributed to European golf.

After sampling American golf in the 90s, but ultimately deciding not to move there permanently, Nitra returned to Czechoslovakia where he joined, and subsequently led, the PGA of Czech Republic, becoming it’s President from 2002 to 2016.

“I firmly believe that the Czech PGA is now an integral part of both the European and global PGA communities,” added Nitra.

“The current board, which has continued our work, is doing an excellent and responsible job – there is no doubt about that.”

Nitra’s efforts across the sport, both in his native Czech Republic, and his adopted home of Germany, display just how varied and impactful a PGA Professional’s roles can be and make him a worthy winner of this famous award.

“I firmly believe that the coaching community is the single most important stakeholder in our wonderful sport,” Hugh states.

“To be truly effective as coaches we must develop our skills with this in mind. I want to up-skill coaches to deliver on their responsibility to the game, to create a high-functioning community of like-minded people all passionate about improving themselves and the game.

“I’ve always been driven by ensuring I am doing all I can to make the players I work with better, and now it’s the same for coaches…so I am always trying to do the right thing at the right time with the best information available to me.”

Ladies European Tour Tournament Director, former CPG staffer, and PGA Member Christiane Stenger, has extensive knowledge and experience in the sport that have led her to the forefront of some of golf’s biggest events, including the 2024 Olympic Games.

Christiane spoke to the CPG direct from Paris during the Olympic Golf women’s competition about her experiences as a Rules Official during the week, the electric atmosphere at Le Golf National, and her valuable advice for PGA Members early on in their careers looking to develop themselves.

………..

The Olympics so far have been amazing, and, knowing that I would come here, I’ve watched a lot on TV. Obviously the crowds were amazing for the men, but I have to say that it’s as good for the women. Especially the French girls have been supported massively, but so have the entire field – the fans have been amazing.

We could hardly move anywhere with buggies, which is always a good sign because it means that a lot of people are there to watch.

The atmosphere is amazing and it does feel different than a normal tournament because you just have far more people involved. People are really cheering each other along and they’re playing for their country rather than for prize money, which does give a bit of a different atmosphere.

Especially on the first tee when the players tee off – there are so many people cheering for every player and it is absolutely amazing.

My role this week has been as a rules official, but we do change the official assignments every day. Some days I’m assigned to a specific zone where I am responsible for any rulings popping up in that area. But on other days I’m assigned to be a rover, in charge of managing pace of play, and I could be either on the front nine or back nine, or as general rules, or keeping an overall picture.

To be part of the Olympics as a rules official is just amazing to be honest. It is always nice to be part of a big team, and we only get to meet the officials from the other tours where we do majors usually. So when we share tournaments it is always nice to meet up and collaborate. We have our colleagues from the LPGA but also we have people here from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, The R&A, and USGA so it’s always really nice to be involved together and see what happens on the different tours and exchanging things.

The core setup this week is a little different to what we do on normal weeks on the LET, and much closer to what we do in major weeks. It is a bit tougher than the average LET tournament – the main differences are the course is playing slightly longer and green speed a bit faster. Plus we have an entire agronomy team here besides the local greenkeeping team and supervisor.

So there’s just more resources involved than what we normally have, but otherwise the standards are similar.

If I talk from a rules perspective, then if I’m just a rules official at one of our tournaments, then it is absolutely similar to what we do here. The only difference being that we have more referees out there than what we normally have. Normally we have around 6 – 8 rules officials out there – this week we are fortunate enough to have one rules official covering two or three holes, so we just have more staff on the ground.

My best piece of advice for a PGA member early in their career…? I started off with teaching and I really enjoyed my time doing that, but I think it is all about exploring what prospective options you actually have. Most people think it is purely teaching or maybe being a club manager, but there are so many options around what you can do as a PGA Member. Explore your options, try different things, and then try to find something that will inspire you to do it for the rest of your career. There is nothing wrong with doing one thing throughout your career at all but I am sure many would like to try different things along the way too.

————————-

Whilst choosing suitable technology for your golf facility remains a stringent process, it is the implementation of these choices where most questions and problems can arise.

Golfer and member resistance to change is one of the most common challenges faced by PGA Professionals, managers and other decision makers. So, how can you set yourself on the path to success when adopting and implementing new technology? Are there some examples to follow?

Located in Tilburg (Holland), Prise d’Eau Golf is a large golf club and operation by all accounts, welcoming 10,000 golfers a year and a membership of more than 1,500.

With such a large customer base and complex operation, switching Tournament Management software providers to Golf Genius could have posed a range of headaches for General Manager, Hedwig Wassing.

Here, he shares his three steps that made the switch to Golf Genius successful.

A staged implementation of Golf Genius Tournament Management

“When we first discussed the implementation of Golf Genius Tournament Management across the club, we took a sensible and prudent approach to doing so. We first utilised the system to run our non-member events, such as the business clubs, over a period of time without any pressure. This derived results and case studies that could be presented to our committees, which in turn ensured the membership was totally bought-in to Golf Genius and could be taken off the old system with ease.”

The creation of Golf Genius software ‘Super Users’

”At the same time, we trained our more tech-savvy members to use the system without any pressure of actually running a tournament. Those ‘super-users’ began helping other committee members and the appreciation for what it could do spread throughout the club.”

24/7 Support provided by Golf Genius

As with all Golf Genius customers, Prise d’Eau Golf received continuous support in their implementation and use of the software. They were provided with a full mix of training, live support and educational resources to ensure correct understanding and application throughout. “The support provided by Golf Genius is phenomenal. There’s an immediate response to every question and in most cases, the issue is solved by Golf Genius themselves, rather than them instructing you on how to solve the problem.”

Resultingly, Prise d’Eau Golf are benefitting massively from a smooth adoption process. It is allowing them to successfully utilise Golf Genius Tournament Management to the benefit of their golfer’s experience at the club. “Golf Genius Tournament Management is the most extensive solution on the market, capable of addressing our current needs but also our future needs as well. From the point an event is announced through to the final results coming in, it empowers us to deliver great experiences in an operationally efficient way.”

…………………………

To find out how Golf Genius can support your goals and requirements this year, please arrange a consultation here.

Spring is upon us and golfers are gearing up for a new golfing season. To help you prepare for the increasing levels of customer demand, Golf Genius has put together a series of steps you can take across your golf shop or retail operation.

01 – Check & update upcoming stock orders

To ensure you have an accurate gauge on when new stock orders will arrive, input, calendarize and communicate each order with your team. This will enable you to manage your staff’s expectations and those of your customer’s.

02 – Introduce a process for tracking demo clubs, rental sets and hire trollies

If you have purchased a new suite of rental trollies or hire clubs for the season, the last thing you need is to lose track of which ones are in use (and by whom). By introducing a tracking process – such as a daily recording system – for your team, they can manage rental equipment properly and track down any that have not been returned on time.

03 – Clear out old stock with a flash sale

To achieve the previous two points, having the space on the shop floor is an absolute must. Flash sales are a great tactic for replacing any gear from the previous season and if you have the means to do so, introducing an online sale via your shop website will help clear out old stock in time for the arrival of new equipment that is coming in.

04 – Update your supplier lists

By updating and correctly filing supplier information such as their contact details, your team can find each one quickly and easily at the point of placing a customer’s order, saving them time and improving the order flow.

05 – Some smaller tasks to think about…

Finalise your existing customer orders to clean the backlog up and make way for new ones.

If you have new staff members, make sure they have appropriate account access for systems they need to use on a daily basis, such as till systems and merchandise order platforms.

Prepare a range of customer communication templates. Team members can use these to communicate with customers at different stages of the buying process, saving them time throughout.

By following these simple steps, your staff will be better placed to elevate customer service levels, become more efficient in the process, and maximise sales opportunities for your golf shop in 2024.

…………………………

Golf Genius provides innovative software solutions to over 10,000 private clubs, public courses, and resorts in over 60 countries. Through its Golf Shop solution, PGA Professionals can elevate service levels and streamline processes across the retail operation and various services within it, such as orders, club repairs, rental sets and demo clubs.

CPG partner Golfbidder is delighted to announce that its exclusive B2B pricing tool, Golfbidder Pro is now available to all European PGA Professionals and golf retailers.

Golfbidder Pro is now fully automated for the whole of Europe, meaning PGA Pros from across the continent can get prices for clubs and inventory, schedule free collections, and receive payment – all through Golfbidder Pro.

“The launch of Golfbidder Pro across Europe is a superb development and further step towards supporting the businesses of many PGA Professionals,” said Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG] CEO, Ian Randell.

“Golfbidder have been a fantastic partner of CPG for many years and a great supporter of PGA Professionals. This expanded offering provides further business opportunities to PGA Professionals across our membership and network, perfectly aligning with the CPG’s mission and activity.”

Business Development Manager at Golfbidder, Thomas Tanner said “We’re always looking for opportunities to improve Golfbidder Pro but ensuring that this service was available for as many European partners as possible was a crucial starting point for us.”

“Now we’ve delivered this solution, focus switches to helping new and current users get the most out of the tool and to start generating a simple and sustainable revenue stream.”

Golfbidder Pro is a free tool for all golf professionals and retailers which offers guaranteed pricing for old inventory and ex-demo clubs, as well as being able to offer customers trade-in and part-exchange options without the associated risk.

“Golfbidder Pro is not just a pricing tool, it’s a sales tool, too. By knowing the value of the clubs the customer already owns, retailers can focus on the lower cost of upgrading equipment, rather than the higher price of buying something new. Our experience shows us, when a customer knows they can part-exchange and only pay the difference they’re much more likely to transact.”

Golfbidder is the biggest buyer of new and used golf clubs in Europe and is committed to helping European PGA Pros and golf retailers do business – a commitment exemplified by the opening of a new European Fulfilment Centre in late 2023.

The new women’s Autumn/Winter 2024 range from PING reaches new heights, with interchanging garments complementing a host of different looks that make it easy for female golfers to create multiple fashionable outfits.

New innovative technology drives this expansive range of clothing, in addition to three new print stories that encompass timeless elegance: with comfort, playability and style at the core. The breadth of choice within the collection allows golfers to express their individuality by layering up in coordinated printed patterns or simply keep their style sleek in the new sporty silhouettes, all available in this season’s colours and textures.

Terrazo, the first of three print stories, is a textured print that incorporates a natural, warm autumnal palette for a selection of on-trend outfits. The Monogram print exudes classic luxury, with a unique and symbolic combination of the women’s PING logo for a repeated premium print. Finally, the Diffused Florals print includes an abstract design for a floral camo effect; a bolder option for those seeking a sophisticated, sporty look.

Milli, a new high-end waterproof, features a monogram embossed pattern on the front panels, back vent and lower sleeves and is constructed in a two-layer breathable fabric, designed in a flattering silhouette, to keep you dry and stylish out on the course. The jacket also has a useful adjustable hood which packs into the collar, for ultimate protection during wet weather and the cosy brushed tricot lined areas provide warmth and cosiness on colder days.

An exciting new stand out style is the Gem, a lightweight hybrid hooded jacket with wind and water resistance. The insulation in the front and back panels utilises PING’s SensorWarm® technology for core warmth, while the stretch fabric throughout creates a complimentary fit. This incredibly versatile jacket is a must for golfers, as it is the perfect solution for an on-course thermal, or an off-course winter warmer.

Layering garments in this season’s range couldn’t be simpler, making it easier than ever to create fresh and modern outfits. The insulated Flo vest, with its chic collarless design, makes layering a seamless process by slipping it under outerwear or over mid-layers; with the added benefits of the lightweight and breathable Sorona® Aura insulation and windproof stretch side panels, the Flo will give you a thermal boost and great look.

The Lolette, a printed long sleeve top engineered for moisture-moving comfort in all conditions, comes in three stylish colourways with a peached fabric for enhanced softness – an ideal garment to wear underneath an outerwear option, like the Bryony insulated reversible vest, for full freedom of movement.

The Autumn Winter season means sweater weather is in full swing. Step onto the course in one of PING’s new knitwear styles; the Jeanie roll neck has been designed to effortlessly complement the new insulated vests in the collection and with highlight colour details, it makes it super easy to style for the season. Crafted from a merino blend, this style provides next to the skin warmth and comfort, perfect for layering.

A lined sweater never goes out of style and this season PING has two to choose from; the Elspeth is a hybrid knit, which combines merino blend knitted details with an insulted quilted front body, making it a versatile must have, offering maximum comfort and style on the course. The Kaylah is a timeless fully lined sweater featuring a seamless deep neckline with direction ribs giving this a modern update for the season.

PING also continues its support for the Solheim Cup in 2024, as the official apparel supplier for the European team. Details of the replica kit will be available nearer the time.

Joining a prestigious group including names such as Annika Sörenstam, John Paramor and Emma Villacieros, Figueras-Dotti is honoured for her work across her career in supporting and developing golf in both Spain and internationally, particularly in women and girls golf, as a coach, a player and a leader in the sport.

“These are the moments that are very special because that gives me the strength and the desire to keep working on the things that I’m doing and keep working on golf in Europe,” said Figueras-Dotti of the award.

“I think there have been some great moments in my career. Obviously some trophies won and things like that – but I have had some great experiences as a coach such as going to the Olympic Games in Rio, and as part of teams such as being involved with Solheim Cup for so many times.

“But I definitely have the ‘baby’ of mine which is bringing the Solheim Cup to Spain, which was a huge, tremendous effort. So, although I’m not planning to quit anytime soon, I would like to be remembered as somebody that has really given back to the game of golf in general, not only in Spain, but in Europe.”

Since 2018, Figueras-Dotti has led the Ladies European Tour and overseen its growth, including the joint venture partnership with the LPGA that is elevating women’s professional golf worldwide with expanded schedules and substantially larger prize funds.
Figueras-Dotti’s extensive experience in high-performance golf led her to coaching roles with national teams since the early 2000s.

1,000 Clubs Using Golf Hub in First Year

Golf Genius today announced that over 1,000 private clubs, public courses, and golf associations have started using Golf Genius Golf Hub since launching just one year ago.

Available to all Golf Genius Tournament Management subscribers, Golf Hub helps golf professionals promote awareness, drive registration, and boost participation in golf events, leagues, and clinics.

Golf professionals can quickly and easily create a great looking online registration page for any golf event, league, or clinic. These “digital flyers” are automatically aggregated and showcased via “club hubs” which can be embedded into existing club websites, included in email campaigns and promoted via social media channels. Upon registration, golfers are immediately dropped into the roster in Golf Genius Tournament Management where the golf professional seamlessly proceeds with running the event or league as usual.

“We’re always trying to identify ways to save time for golf professionals and help them deliver a better golfer experience,” said Clint Jarrett, Golf Hub Product Manager. “By eliminating manual signups, phone calls, and emails, Golf Hub removes the friction for golfers and golf professionals.”

Late last year, Golf Genius launched the ability for national and regional associations to create hubs that automatically aggregate events, leagues, and clinics across their public and private member clubs.

Chris Kallmeyer, co-CEO of Golf Genius, commented: “We’re very excited about the next stage of Golf Hub where golfers will be able to use a map to see golf events, leagues, and clinics near them, and then quickly and easily register online. This vision will be a reality in the foreseeable future as a result of key partnerships with golf associations and federations around the world. In the meantime, we’re pleased with the rapid adoption of Golf Hub while we continue to innovate based on valuable feedback from the Golf Genius community.”

AL AIN EQUESTRIAN, SHOOTING & GOLF CLUB, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
30 JANUARY – 03 FEBRUARY 2023

Christoph Guenther took the professional honours at the AESGC International Pro-Am at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club [AESGC] in UAE, after consistently low scoring throughout the week edged him ahead of the field.

The PGA of Germany Professional duelled in the desert with the PGA of Belgium’s Guillaume Watremez all week but was able to come out on top with a final round 68 for a -13 total.

“It is really, really good to win. It’s my second time here in Al Ain…I’ve worked really hard the last couple of months on my game so it feels really good to get rewarded,” said Guenther.

“I knew I was one ahead coming down 18 and I thought just go for it anyway. I’m not very good at laying up, so I just hit the best three wood of the week and knocked it on the green and two putted. I think my team really, really enjoyed it – Al Ain has got a real character to it and AESGC is just a course you are happy to play again and again. That’s why the team and I really enjoy coming here.”

Despite a week of rounds in the 60s, Watremez was unable to catch the eventual winner, but took second place on -11, followed by Erik Lindwall (PGA of Sweden) and Alex Wrigley (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland) in a tie for third at -9.

Watremez might not have taken the individual honours, but together to with his team of Benoit Pierlot, Philippe Van Durme and Michel Goffin, the team event was wrapped up in style with a total of 365 points. Just three points behind after four rounds of competition were the team of Kanatbek Kurbanaliev, Lee Vladimir, Dominov Ravshan and Elyor Akromov with 362 points, followed by Linus Netterlid (PGA of Sweden), Pierre Malteskog, Tomas Carlsson and Peter Öhlin with 339 points in third place.

“We recognise that golf professionals and specialist retailers are always looking for a concise and efficient service to run their shop operations, so we came up with a solution,” commented Craig Higgs, Managing Director for Golf Genius International.

“We pride ourselves on listening to our customer’s needs and Golf Shop is a bi-product of this approach; it’s there to help manage the workload of staff, streamline retail communications and provide PGA Professionals with useful information about their customers.”

Thanks to Golf Shop’s member surveys and profiling features, PGA Professionals and staff can build data-led insights into the shopping behaviours of members and customers, allowing them to tailor the products and services they market to golfers.

Each function is hosted on the Golf Shop app, which provides staff with a more versatile form of tracking retail activity in a user-friendly manner, regardless of their location.

Golf Shop has proven hugely successful since breaking into the US retail market, with many facilities praising the value it offers their operations, including Valhalla Golf Club: “Golf Shop has helped us differentiate our operation and stay successful by helping us provide excellent, personalised customer service,” said Kyle Cramer, Valhalla Golf Club’s Head PGA Professional.

“The product enables our staff to better serve the Valhalla membership. We especially like the automated notifications feature because it keeps members informed and they appreciate getting updates.”
