New research from the Melanoma Fund, the UK’s leading provider of sun protection resources for individuals, sports groups and outdoor clubs, has revealed a clear need for better sun safety in children’s outdoor sports and activities.

The UK study found that most (72%) of coaches, teachers, and outdoor leaders are not properly trained on sun or heat protection, and 43% feel unsupported in protecting the young people they work with. Rising temperatures and increasing UV risks should raise concern and require action.

The Melanoma Fund conducted the research to mark Sun Awareness Week, 12th – 18th May 2025, and increase understanding of the challenges coaches, leaders, and teachers face around sun safety for the children in their care.

Key findings include:

72% of coaches, leaders, and teachers have never received any training on sun or heat protection

Only 16% of organisations have a separate sun protection policy

43% of those working with children outdoors say they feel unsupported or poorly supported by their organisation

Just 4% believe all the children they work with truly understand sun safety

80% of respondents would like access to free or discounted sunscreen

Over two-thirds reported sun or heat-related incidents, including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion

“These findings are concerning, but unfortunately, not surprising. They highlight why we support this sector with free, practical sun safety resources. Although so many leaders are on the case and proactive, these findings are a wake-up call for everyone, including parents who entrust their children to organised outdoor activities,” says Michelle Baker, CEO of the Melanoma Fund.

“With over two-thirds of respondents reporting sun or heat-related incidents – including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion—it’s obvious that action is needed,” adds Michelle Baker. “We provide clear, practical solutions that can help address this issue, and ultimately, protect the next generation from skin cancer.”

Sun safety habits begin in childhood, as does melanoma. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life. Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults, which makes it even more crucial that we protect children from harmful UV exposure.

Parents also play a vital role in setting a good example for sun safety. By showing children how to properly apply sunscreen, rather than just smearing it on their faces, they help teach kids how to protect themselves effectively. This is crucial when children participate in outdoor activities.

Outdoor coaches and leaders are uniquely positioned to lead by example and instil sun-safe habits early on. But this new data shows that only 11% of coaches regularly apply sunscreen in front of children, and just 19% wear a sun hat consistently.

To help organisations and individuals address gaps in education, awareness, and support, the Melanoma Fund offers two key resources:

Sunguarding Course: A free online course that offers accreditation and 3 CIMSPA CPD points, designed to help anyone working outdoors understand and manage the risks of UV exposure.

Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code: Aimed at empowering organisations to create and implement sun safety policies specifically for children in outdoor sports and activities, educating both adults and children.

Sport England is focused on increasing participation in youth sports and physical activity, with great success. However, UV risks in outdoor activities remain largely unaddressed. Backed by hundreds of national governing bodies of sport, the Melanoma Fund is pushing for more awareness and action, protecting young participants from these risks to prevent skin cancer in the next generation.

Bigger than ever

“It was a Congress bigger than ever before, with more speakers too, which was fantastic,” said Murray, “It was a great opportunity to get together and then think about the health benefits of golf – how we can promote health through major events, how we can help people be at their best, maximising performance and decreasing illness and injury. Then it’s just about giving everyone the opportunity to play golf.

“I think everyone who attended is very passionate about golf and health, very knowledgeable as well, and I really enjoyed the two days.”

Stephen Gallacher, the Ryder Cup star and four-time DP World Tour winner, was among those who took part in the discussions as delegates learned about the mental fitness of competing at the highest level.

Gallacher, who played for 28 years on the DP World Tour, said, “The great thing about the conference was that it was all about golf, all about the positives of the sport for longevity of life. You can start at such a young age and you can still be playing at such a late age.

“It was important also to discuss how much the golfing world has changed, how much the health side has come into it. It’s changed a lot since I was a kid, like proper advice on nutrition, recovery and hydration. There is so much data and technology to plot their goals. As the home of golf in Scotland, it was also fitting to be in such a beautiful place to talk about it.”

Key topics

Attendees also delved into key topics like injury prevention and management, adaptations for disabled golfers, nutrition, strength and conditioning. Research presented from Finland, Sweden and Scotland highlighted that:

Golf can provide health enhancing physical activity for people of all ages

Regular physical activity achieved through golf can help prevent and treat more than 40 major chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, depression, anxiety and dementia

Golf also promotes mental well-being, social connections and connection with nature

Golf has additional benefits compared to walking

Fantastic opportunity

Maree Todd, Sport Minister at the Scottish Government, said, “Regular physical activity and participation in sport is one of the best things you can do for physical, mental and social health. The Congress was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and experience, to celebrate what golf is accomplishing and to understand barriers to participation and how we can work to remove them.”

Dr Julia Kettinen, researcher and Golf Exercise Medicine Specialist, added, “Our research highlights that golf can help people achieve the physical activity they need. Golf also kept senior golfers active during the pandemic and supported their quality of life.

“Even a single 18-hole round can offer significant cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, particularly for older adults, compared to regular walking. Globally, more and more people are playing golf – over 100 million now – which is great for both individuals and populations.”

Improving mental health

Although there is compelling evidence of mental health and wellbeing benefits through golf and other sports, life as a professional athlete can be incredibly demanding, with pressure to perform, much time away from friends and family, and at times intense and unwanted scrutiny in social media and in the media.

The golfing industry has recognised these challenges, and conducted research with the players to implement mental health and well-being toolkits, emergency action plans, mind gyms, and a network of specialists for the players, collaborating with tennis and Formula 1 experts who also have intensive travel schedules.

Dr Phil Hopley, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cognacity, who has been instrumental as Mental Fitness Coach with the McLaren F1 Team on their journey from midfielders to World Champions said, “I felt honoured to be at the conference.

“We’ve all got mental health, but it changes sometimes across the course of a week, sometimes during the course of the day. So we can be flourishing or can be mentally well, or we can be struggling a bit, have a mental health problem or a mental disorder.

Collaborative work

“There are so many mental and physical benefits to participating in sport, and we know how important the mind is to being at your best, be that on the Formula 1 track, playing in the Champions League, playing in a golf major or just in life in general.

“Cognacity are delighted to be working with The R&A and the DP World Tour providing psychology and mental fitness support to players, caddies and Tour staff. The untimely passing of top professional golfer Grayson Murray last year was a painful reminder of how challenging life on Tour can be. That is why the collaborative work that golf is prioritising with IOC mental health experts and the provision of industry leading facilities like the Mental Fitness Centre at the Dubai Desert Classic is so important.”

Alyson Mckechin, Head of Golf It! in Glasgow, was also among the speakers in the impressive surroundings of the Royal College, fresh from recently winning Coach of the Year at the Scottish Golf Awards.

Gallacher, the founder of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation which continues to blossom, summed the sessions up. “Our mission is to help and encourage golfers to live a healthy life and enjoy their golf,” he added. “This scientific Congress coming to Scotland was great as it helps us understand the health benefits, hear about how golf is even being prescribed now in Scotland and further afield, and also look at supporting the mental health of players.

“I have had some incredible highs like winning in Dubai, India and Scotland, and being on the winning side at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, but life in professional sport can be lonely and tough, so the work on mental health is so important”.

Sport Minister at the Scottish Government Maree Todd said:

“Regular physical activity and participation in sport is one of the best things you can do for physical, mental and social health. The Congress is a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and experience, to celebrate what golf is accomplishing, and to understand barriers to participation and how we can work to remove them.”

Dr Julia Kettinen, researcher and Golf Exercise Medicine Specialist, outlined:

“Our research highlights that golf can help people achieve the physical activity they need. Golf also kept senior golfers active during the pandemic and supported their quality of life. Even a single 18-hole round can offer significant cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, particularly for older adults, compared to regular walking. Globally, more and more people are playing golf—over 100 million now—which is great for both individuals and populations.”

Stephen Gallacher, 4x DP World Tour Winner, and founder of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation added: “Our mission is to help and encourage golfers to live a healthy life and enjoy their golf. This scientific Congress coming to Scotland is great as it helps us understand the health benefits, hear about how golf is even being prescribed now in Scotland and further afield, and also look at supporting the mental health of players.

“I have had some incredible highs like winning in Dubai, India and Scotland, and being on the winning side at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, but life in professional sport can be lonely and tough, so the work on mental health is so important”.

Although there is compelling evidence of mental health and wellbeing benefit through golf and other sports, life as a professional athlete can be incredibly demanding, with pressure to perform, much time away from friends and family, and at times intense and unwanted scrutiny in social media and in the press.

The golfing industry has recognised these challenges, and conducted research with the players to implement mental health and well-being toolkits, emergency action plans, mind gyms, and a network of specialists for the players, collaborating with tennis and Formula 1 experts who also have intensive travel schedules.

Dr Phil Hopley, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cognacity, who has been instrumental as Mental Fitness Coach with the McLaren F1 Team on their journey from midfielders to World Champions shared:

“There are so many mental and physical benefits to participating in sport, and we know how important the mind is to being at your best, be that on the Formula 1 track, playing in the Champions League, playing in a Major or just in life in general. Cognacity are delighted to be working with The R&A and the DP World Tour providing psychology and mental fitness support to players, caddies and Tour staff.

“The untimely passing of top professional golfer Grayson Murray last year was a painful reminder of how challenging life on Tour can be. That is why the collaborative work that golf is prioritising with IOC mental health experts and the provision of industry leading facilities like the Mental Fitness Centre at the Dubai Desert Classic is so important.”

All 3 days will have specific contents that are possible to follow day by day, as you will be able to discover in the following schedule:

Day 1:

Paul & Kayleigh Franklin Introduction

The Assessment Process & Live Lesson with a Junior Anthony Selects (?)

How Paul starts with a client

Kayleigh’s Role in the Assessment

Creating a Plan

Paul determines plan based on the player’s goals, movement capabilities, apparent “golf IQ.” Plan takes into account fitness issues if Kayleigh is able to see the client first.

What comes first?

If Kayleigh didn’t see the client first, I conference with her and her team afterwards regarding fitness evaluation and player’s goals. Speed potential is a big subject for anything we are doing.

Day 2:

Morning:

Paul works with player who was subject of the evaluation.

Putting evaluation with the same player before launching into golf swing.

Discussion of what we would do on the course if playing holes is possible as part of the evaluation.

Fitness program is something they will get started on as we begin to work on golf swing things.

Early golf swing work should be simple, especially if there are mobility or stability impediments that show up in the fitness screening and/or a grip change is involved in the early stages.

Grip, set up and pivot/post changes can be extremely productive but also can go against a player’s DNA if they have been playing a certain way for a while. These changes need to be discussed gradually and carefully based on the player’s mental/emotional makeup and state. For the coach to observe and decide. The art of coaching.

Afternoon:

Club fitting and it’s role in the process

Performance can be bought

Paul discusses his mental coaching styles, who he has learned from and worked with including Dr. Nick, Bobby Foster (Golf Mental Workshop) and Dr. Rick Jensen.

Scott Fawcett: Course Management – What is the Decade System?
The DECADE Course Management System, created by Scott Fawcett, has solved golf strategy by combining shot distribution patterns and PGA Tour scoring statistics. When Scott combined those two data sets he created a simple way to optimize target selection. Good players know if a pin is closely guarded by a lake to favor the center of the green – but how much? DECADE quickly generates the optimal target that will produce the lowest score based on distance, hazards, and hole location.

The Confederation of Professional Golf’s A.S.K. Workshops event has raised the bar for modern-day CPD sessions and received tremendous praise from both speakers and attending PGA Professional delegates, after the inaugural event took place in Hungary.

13 speakers each had 20 minutes to deliver their short, sharp and concise points around a variety of subject matter from specific areas of coaching and performance, such as a blueprint for how PGA Professionals can prepare games and environments for youth golfers, to how golf can be used to cure some of the world’s educational, economical, social & environmental issues.

“It was a great idea to have speakers presenting for 20 minutes,” said PGA of Hungary General Secretary, Áron Makszin. “I think I can remember most things as it was not one speaker going for an hour where you might lose your attention. You then have your focus tuned up for the next speaker so I thought it was a good idea.”

“I thought it might be a bit hectic but it was very good and very interesting,” said Wojciech Wasniewski (PGA of Poland). “There was lots of mingling going on in the coffee breaks and I’m really glad I came along.”

Presenter, Sarah Claridge (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland), said: “My 20 minutes was around tapping into on-course emotions…but it was a nightmare for me! I do three-and-a-half hour workshops and one day programmes so to do something in 20 minutes was a good experience and I learnt from it.”

“With 20 minutes then I think you can listen to things better – you remember more of it if it’s 20 minutes instead of an hour or two…it’s nicely compact,” added Ryan Gould (PGA of Austria).

“I think you can take something from everybody,” said Damian MacPherson (PGA of Hungary). “There’s a lot of things that we’re all doing that are reinforced…now I need to sit down and go through everything I’ve learnt…I think everyone will take away something from the event and become better coaches, better players, whatever they want to do.”

“It was tough!” said speaker, Mark Taylor (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland). “Having presented in various areas, 20 minutes was tough to condense content into. I think for a delegate sitting and listening then it’s a great way to go. The ‘TED Talk’s idea, getting so much more into a day and it’s a real learning experience and a great way of doing it in the future.”

Attending delegates also had the opportunity to discuss the speakers’ ideas and thoughts during various networking breaks, and also gain access to video of all 13 full presentations to review the sessions and materials as much as they wish to.

‘A.S.K.’, standing for ‘Attributes.Skills.Knowledge.’, is the Confederation of Professional Golf’s initiative to help share useful, relevant and interesting content to its Member Country PGAs and their individual PGA Professionals members through various written, video, live and audio media.

The ‘A.S.K. Workshops’ are the first live element within the initiative giving all PGA Professionals a platform to share experiences, ideas and stories in front of a live audience.

If individuals are interested in the opportunity to find out more about the event’s sessions, or make the most of their 20 minutes at future A.S.K. Workshops by presenting, then please get in contact at aw@CPG.com.

When I was a kid we used to watch ‘Top of The Pops’ every Thursday evening, 7:30pm…never missed it! Too of the Pops would count down the top songs on the music charts of that particular week and the excitement was palpable as we waited to see who was Number 1! No social media or internet back then. Just a good old week long wait to see if your favourite track had hit the top spot.

A lot has changed since those days but some things have remained the same.

In my presentation in Hungary, I will kick-start the day with my Top 5 (In honour of TOTP!) tips to do our bit, as coaches and administrators, in helping the players of tomorrow develop. My top 5, in keeping with the modern Holistic approach we have to our game, include Psychological, Physiological and technical nuggets.

To whet the appetite, I will give you number 6, didn’t make it into the top 5, but important none the less.

Communicate with young players’ parents:

When beginning the journey with these kids, it is almost as important to keep the parents as up to speed as the kids on what you are doing and the reasons and rationale behind your interventions. It is an investment that can be taxing and time consuming but definitely worth investing in. Parents like to know what the plan is and what their kids are up to.

Studies show that Parents of performing players reduce their involvement as time goes on, so the key here is to invest early when it is appropriate and effective.

See you all in Hungary!

At a time where problems are well identified, Education, Economy, Social, Environnement etc… I have been doing my best since 1995 to help create a better Future and give alternative solutions for our coming new generations.

To create happy and well-educated Citizen Golfers is my dedication.

I was very lucky to meet Bill Owens in 1993 and decided to work with him since 1995.

Bill is Golf Professional Member of PGA of Great Britain & Ireland since 1976 who moved to France in 1991. Shortly afterwards he created a very unique approach based on sensations, balance and co-ordination that allows everyone to find their inner natural swing and therefore enables them to play golf very quickly.

A lot has happened since 1997 when we first created the “Association pour le Golf Educatif”.

Since then, Golf has become THE Educational and Environment Tool for tomorrow !

In fact, it’s one of the best ways to teach moral and civic education (like all sports you might say!) although it is not only a sport but also a GAME, filled with values and virtues. This is what makes it accessible to everyone and not just to sportsmen. As a matter of fact, golf is probably “the” game for all sportsmen !

I believe it therefore essential to put the GAME back into our daily lives.

PLAYING helps to reconsolidate the rules, to stop fighting, and to recreate a social bond between different kinds of people.

Redefining the fundamental principles (for oneself and for the game) thanks to a personal instruction guide will inevitably boost behaviour as a group.

The project is called “Educational Golf” but it’s no longer a project! As part of their school syllabus, hundreds of kids from 18 different French towns, now PLAY at auto-educating themselves each week and are proud of their actions, replanting trees on waste and uncultivated land. Some have even found employment in this new environment.

I’m sure that you’ll look at our game differently afterwards, which I hope you’ll go on to share the idea with as many people as possible.

Ready to PLAY ?

How about Golf…? (Why not Golf…?)

Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett, will speak at the 2016 A.S.K. Workshops in Hungary on 26th July – here Tony explains some of the background to his presentation…

There is nothing much wrong with Golf. The game that we play, which by my definition is a sport where we take a stick, hit an object to a target that is either in, on or above the ground, is old. In fact, Golf is very old. 600 years or more we are informed. Well if it’s old it must be good, otherwise, it would have died, or at least be on its death bed.

Solo Synchronised Swimming (Los Angeles Olympics 1984), yes I could not believe it either, is one such sport that is no longer practised, while Croquet, Tug-of-War and Rackets are little more than niche sports.

The demise of Golf is exaggerated, it is not dying as some people would have you believe. Perhaps, as is the case with an old car or house for that matter, Golf could have done with a little renovation and restoration towards the end of the last century, but when things were going well, why would it change?

Initiatives such as Sprint6Golf and Golf Educatif will at least, in my opinion, make a difference. Each keeps the fundamental principles of golf at their core and address the key issues of time, cost and difficulty. The PGA Junior Golf League is growing the number of kids engaged in the sport in the USA and soon in Europe, while Golf Europe’s GoGolf Europe project is now being trialled in five countries with the objective of keeping adolescents in the game for longer.

Golf development is about making sure that people have a chance to take part in the sport, ensuring that all sections of the community are aware of available activities, and letting them know where they can get involved. I have long been an advocate of the golf professional having the capability to transform into a Golf Developer, a bit like Clark Kent who works as a newspaper journalist for the Daily Planet, only to change into Superman at a moments notice. Golf Developers ooze a passion for the sport, organise golf related activities, distribute information, arrange taster sessions, coaching and put like-minded people together. The golf developer is a facilitator who makes things happen.

If you want some things to change, then you have to change some things. Often it starts with ourselves. Perhaps you can consider the five questions that always get me thinking about the realisation of the things that I want to achieve.

To achieve my objective:

What type of person do I need to become?

What attitude do I need to have?

What do I need to learn?

Who can help me to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge that I need?

What barriers do I need to overcome?

See you in Budapest.

Workshops in Hungary on 26th July – Here Ian explains more about his chosen subject matter…

Q: What is the similarity between someone winning a fortune in the lottery draw (lotto) and an elite amateur golfer turning professional?

A: Their sudden change of status means both undergo the process of ‘transition’ and managing that process well is easier said than done.

The challenge of successfully ‘transitioning’ is highlighted by the fact that up to 70% of all major lottery winners worldwide end up bankrupt within a few years of their big win and less than 1% of elite amateurs make the ‘grade’ in big-time professional golf.

For my Sports Coaching MSc dissertation I was lucky enough to interview nine former elite male amateur golfers about their experiences following their transition to professional golf. My presentation at the first A.S.K workshop in Hungary will cover some of the findings of my research and possibly challenge those present to see the process of ‘elite players turning professional’ through new eyes.

‘Barriers and coping resources’ is an expression coined by Dr Natalia Stambulova, one of the world leaders in understanding why some athletes make the grade while most do not. It refers to Dr. Stambulova’s ‘formula for success’ for elite athletes.

During my presentation I will draw on some of her research work as well as that Dr. Nancy Schlossberg; a leading authority of ‘life transitions’.

The Confederation of Professional Golf’s new educational event format will launch in July in which PGA Professionals will be given an opportunity to come together in an ideas-led forum with short, easy-to-consume and thought-provoking presentations.

The first ‘A.S.K. Workshops’ event, titled ‘Developing the Players of Tomorrow’, will see each of the 12 speakers present for exactly 20 minutes to share a story, present an idea, and pass on their thoughts about junior coaching and development in golf.

‘A.S.K.’, standing for ‘Attributes.Skills.Knowledge.’, is the Confederation of Professional Golf’s initiative to help share useful, relevant and interesting content to its Member Country PGAs and their individual PGA Professionals members through various written, video, live and audio media.

The ‘A.S.K. Workshops’ are the first live element within the initiative and will give PGA Professionals a platform to share their experiences, ideas and thoughts on junior golf in front of an audience who will be able to listen to, and interact with, the speakers.

Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education and Membership, Tony Bennett, said, “If you want to make some changes in your life, then you have got to make some changes in your life! The opportunity to listen to, learn from, and question people who have a proven record of success in their respective fields is one sure way to be able to develop new skills and gain new knowledge, which can then be used to make the changes that you want.

“The A.S.K. Workshops approach ensures that from the great menu of speakers on offer that all participants will pick up valuable and practical ideas”.

Each of the sessions will also be recorded and excerpts used to create digital video content.

Research has shown coaching and the relationships between players, parents and diverse coaches to be an often “messy” and complex process. My interest in the subject of inter-coach relationships initially stems from my own experiences during an eight year period (2001-2008) where I was a highly motivated junior coach at Sigmaringen Golf Club in South-West Germany.

During that period and under my guidance, our junior programme developed 5 elite players who went on to gain state (regional) or national recognition through their on-course achievements. My relationship with the various county and national coaches during that period varied from very collaborative to passive-aggressive to non-existent.

Feedback from many home and regional/national coaching colleagues throughout Europe indicate tension or a lack of communication often exists between them and one can reasonably assume these seemingly fractured relationships impact negatively upon player development.

During my 2015 Coaches Circle presentation I will initially discuss the “why?” behind the differing relationships between home and county/national coaches. Part of this discussion will cover the micro-politics of governing bodies within Golf, the various effect of pyramid systems on coaches and players, and why coaches may find it difficult to “park their ego” when working with junior players.

To conclude my presentation I will suggest two possible strategies for developing more productive home and regional/national coach relationships.

A young girl starts her journey into sport and finds she enjoys it greatly.

Community, friendships, challenges are all part of her life now and she really loves it. She gets good, improves, and moves her way along the pathway to land at High Performance level.

But is there a cost, a price to pay?

In our presentation we look at the possible roadblocks and perhaps how they can be avoided or at least smoothly navigated:

Girls are not small boys. Attention and awareness on the difference is a must.

The role of the parent…Enabler or Disabler – How can we help the parents of our athletes to understand what strategies may be helpful and also those that may be destructive?

Push/Pull: The dynamics of crafted encouragement.

Onboarding and off boarding of players in a responsible manner. If the players know what is expected, then it is clear and De-selection becomes less contentious.

Why mindfulness is so important in young people in today’s environment.

Developing a like-minded coaching team, with the culture of the team in mind.

Duty of care – Do we fully understand what this is?

School work and its balance, why is this really important particularly in Europe. What is the culture of education in your set-up?

Feedback… The need for it and a proper approach.

Planning and de-briefing. A model for your mission.

21 countries were represented at the event and were brought together under the umbrella theme of youth golf and to time with the EGA’s European Team Shield Championship.

With subject matter such as working with federations, junior player development, high performance in youth golf, junior academies and coaching relationships, the event has already received hugely positive praise:

“The feedback we’ve received so far has been excellent – really first class,” said Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett. “With the format we have it is very interactive and rather than just have ‘talking heads’…this has been an opportunity for the delegates to really dig into the minds and souls of the speakers.

“Coaches Circle is a ‘mastermind’ group where coaches are of a like-mind but also a like-task, having similar things to do in terms of dealing with players, national teams, etc., are given an opportunity to work together, bounce ideas off each other… and perhaps give a bit of support.”

The education event continued its tradition of selecting some of the best speakers from across the continent and further afield to educate, inform and discuss the subject matter of youth golf.

“We always take the view that we have lots of good speakers and lots of good people in Europe, and with that in mind you don’t always have to go for celebrity teachers,” added Bennett. “There’s lots of good work getting done out there every day on every driving range somewhere in Europe. Those people are working with the players at the sharp end and understand what is going on. So we felt as though we could put a very good group of people together from that background.”

Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf Education Committee, Jonathan Mannie, will be presenting at the 2015 Coaches Circle from 27-28 July at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort. Here, Jonathan looks at how coaches can be better prepared to meet the objectives of national teams and their federations.

The interaction between a federation and their national coach is a fundamental of any success which the players will have on the course. A harmonious relationship must exist in spirit of mutual trust and respect. A thorough understanding of the selection structure, aspirations and needs of the federation is perhaps the most important first step.

Once fully understood, the relationship can develop and be hugely beneficial for all parties, federation, coach and most importantly for the players. The coach is effectively a bridge to connect the federation and players, and if the objectives of one collide with the other then it will be the coach who has to deal with the impact. It is obvious that the coach must deliver on the federations objectives, but must also protect the interests of the players.

Coaching a group of talented athletes is always a challenge and involves some key areas that require understanding:

Understanding of the standard of golf throughout Europe

Understanding entry criteria into top amateur tournaments

Understanding the development of players from good to elite players

Transparency in the structure, selection criteria and reporting is a must and should be laid out in the contract, whilst clarity in the expectations of all concerned will make things easier and as time goes on.

During the presentation I will also look at some of the concepts that I have developed which help to define my approach to coaching national teams that will act as a ‘how-to’ guide.

One of these is BTMES, which stands for Body, Technique, Mental, Emotional and Social. Working with these five areas as key markers in your schedule and programme will help address many challenges before they become a bigger issue.

In preparation for the presentation I would encourage you to look into the structures of federations, how national teams are established, as well as the selection criteria that are commonly used for national players.

The Coaches Circle takes place from the 27 – 28 July, 2015 at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort, Bulgaria, and will see national coaches, coaches of elite players (on a level 1,2 or 3 tour), and coaches involved in national junior programmes, attend theory and practical sessions.

This year’s event will focus on Junior Golf and the issues around development, retention, and working with talented young players, drawing on the vast experience of the speakers in the schedule.

Download Registration Form (DOC 0.7MB)

Day One will begin with a session from Confederation of Professional Golf Education Committee (EC) Chairman, Jonathan Mannie, looking at the challenges of coaching players to meet Federation objectives, followed by fellow EC Member, Martin Westphal, and his ‘ingredients for junior player development’.

Later in Day One, High Performance Manager for the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU), David Kearney, will give an account of a girl’s journey in and out of high performance golf, which will be followed up with a panel session to close the first day.

Day Two begins with Director of Coaching for the Cranfield Golf Academy, Steven Orr’s, session detailing the skills and character traits of young players, whilst Managing Director of KRL Consulting, Karl Morris, will draw on his experience with both the Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke Golf Schools for his session on expectations and benefits of juniors attending a structured junior golf academy.

Advanced Fellow of the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland from the Impact Golf Academy, Ian Peek, will then look at the relationships between home coaches and their national/regional counterparts and whether this is a case of ‘coaching ego over player success’.
