The German Golf Federation (DGV) is strengthening its commitment to growing the game among young people through the expansion of its GolfSixes League — an innovative, team based format inspired by junior pathways common in major global sports.

Launched internationally in 2022 with support from The R&A, The Ryder Cup European Development Trust, the DP World Tour and the Ladies European Tour, the programme has quickly gained national recognition for its fun, inclusive and low pressure approach to competitive golf.

Germany’s golf system is structured regionally, and the DGV has strategically positioned GolfSixes League as an entry point for clubs not currently involved in existing junior programmes. This approach has enabled the federation to reach new communities and introduce golf to a wider and more diverse group of young players.

By 2025, the initiative had grown to 37 participating clubs, engaging around 500 juniors across local leagues. The DGV also staged a dedicated GolfSixes League event during the 2025 German Challenge by VcG on the Hotelplanner Tour, which proved highly popular with young participants and showcased the format to a broader audience.

Building on this momentum, the DGV aims to expand the programme to 40 clubs in 2026. A major step forward will be the integration of GolfSixes formats into schools participating in the Abschlag Schule programme, which reaches approximately 10,000 children and teenagers aged 6 to 18. From 2027, both the on course GolfSixes League and the off-course GolfSixes Mini League are set to be introduced in schools, creating a clear and accessible pathway from first contact with golf to structured team play.

The DGV reports that up to 200 clubs across the country have expressed interest in running junior initiatives such as GolfSixes League, signalling strong potential for nationwide expansion.

As Germany continues to modernise its junior golf landscape, GolfSixes League is emerging as a central pillar of the country’s long term strategy to make golf more accessible, social and appealing to the next generation of players.

With outdoor courses packed during the short summer season, Golfsambands Island (GSI) has identified the off season as a opportunity for growing and sustaining junior interest.

To put this into action, the federation has introduced a winter GolfSixes League, played entirely on simulators, using the GolfSixes League’s proven format of team-golf playing two person scramble over six holes.

This year’s GolfSixes League opened on 28 February with three more events taking place across Iceland this winter. The initiative forms part of the international expansion of GolfSixes League, supported by The R&A, The Ryder Cup European Development Trust, the Confederation of Professional Golf, the Golf Foundation, DP World Tour and the Ladies European Tour.

Participation on the Rise

A total of 42 juniors took part – significantly more than last year – competing in six teams across boys’ and girls’ divisions. Each team featured 6–8 players, all receiving colour coded caps, along with bottles, sports bags and GolfSixes League branded bag tags.
The event delivered impressive play, including two holes in one and several chip ins, adding excitement to the fast paced format.

Strong Support and a Celebratory Finish

Five PGA professionals assisted throughout the competition, helping guide players who are taking their first steps into competitive golf.

The day concluded with a Kahoot quiz, an awards ceremony and a pizza party, reinforcing the League’s emphasis on fun, friendship and confidence building.

The Czech Golf Federation has strengthened its drive to grow junior participation by rolling out the GolfSixes Mini League, an inclusive six hole team format designed for children and played with adapted clubs and balls suitable for school fields and sports halls.

Working closely with golf clubs across the country, the federation has helped establish strong links between clubs and nearby schools. Club coaches have trained teachers to run GolfSixes Mini League sessions and short game challenges, culminating in a national Mini League final for participating schools.

Schools that extend the experience by offering pupils opportunities to play at local golf clubs are also invited to take part in the federation’s annual GolfSixes League event.

The 2025 season delivered impressive results, with 500 children taking part in the GolfSixes Mini League and a further 50 pupils competing in the national schools’ GolfSixes League event. Building on this momentum, the federation now plans to expand the GolfSixes League in 2026 by welcoming international teams for the first time.

The continued success of the programme highlights the growing appetite for fun, accessible golf formats that introduce more children to the sport and strengthen pathways into club participation.

On 1 February 2026, GolfRSA hosted a GolfSixes League event for beginner golfers at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club as an activation alongside the Africa Amateur Championship, staged by The R&A at the same venue.

The initiative was designed specifically to introduce new players to the game in a welcoming and enjoyable environment during championship week.

The Texas Scramble format proved to be a highlight of the day, allowing participants to play alongside friends in a relaxed, team-based setting. For some of the kids, it was their very first time on a golf course. Parents were actively involved throughout the round, assisting with scoring, carrying bags, and walking the fairways, with many describing the experience as valuable bonding time with their children.

Last year, GolfRSA delivered 21 GolfSixes events and activations across South Africa, demonstrating strong and growing interest in the format. GolfSixes continues to play an important role in reducing the intimidation factor often associated with the sport, helping to remove barriers to entry and making golf more accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for young beginner golfers.

GolfSixes League continues its rapid rise in Poland, with the Polish Golf Union reporting that both the GolfSixes League and the newly launched GolfSixes Mini League had their strongest season to date.

Across the 2025 GolfSixes League, seven tournaments were staged nationwide, attracting 149 young players representing 12 teams. A new individual registration system enabled parents to enter children directly, allowing organisers to broaden access to the series.

Each event featured unique medals and branded golf balls, helping create a fun, motivating atmosphere for young beginners. The standout stop on the calendar was Kraków Valley, where 30 juniors competed despite cold, rainy conditions.

The GolfSixes Mini League made its debut this year and exceeded all expectations. Supported by equipment from the international project, weekly school sessions led to a June tournament with 28 participants, while PGA Poland’s requirement for assistant coaches to host Mini League events helped drive national uptake.

In total, eight Mini League tournaments were held, drawing 161 children – far surpassing the initial target of 100 participants. All events were free to enter, and every child received a participation medal.

With both formats expanding rapidly, GolfSixes is now reaching more children and more facilities across Poland than ever before, strengthening the country’s junior golf pathway and building a vibrant foundation for the future of the sport.

With 750 registered juniors at Polish golf clubs, the 286 GolfSixes players will have a big positive impact on Polish junior golf.

Łukasz Tomkiewicz, Vice President of the PGA of Poland, has been named the recipient of the CPG 5-Star Professional Award, following his nomination by PGA Polska.

The 5-Star Professional Award recognises PGA Professionals who have excelled across a broad range of roles within the profession, reflecting the diverse skillset required of modern PGA Members. Since its introduction in 1992, the award has honoured individuals whose contributions extend beyond a single discipline, spanning coaching, administration, leadership, education, events, and industry development.

Reacting to the news during the CPG Festival of Golf at Porto Carras Grand Resort  as part of the CPG’s Annual Awards Supported by Rolex, Tomkiewicz was quick to acknowledge the collective effort behind the recognition:

“I’m very proud, but I see this as a great success for the whole PGA of Poland. This award is more for PGA Polska than for me alone,” he said.

A PGA of Poland Member for over a decade, Tomkiewicz has been involved in multiple facets of the golf industry. His roles have included serving as Editor of the PGA of Poland Magazine, organising national PGA tournaments, supporting elite and professional-level competition, and playing a central role in the development of flagship events such as the Road to Rosa Tour and Challenge Tour tournaments hosted in Poland.

One of the clearest examples of Tomkiewicz’s impact has been his role in helping return Challenge Tour golf to Poland after a fifteen-year absence with the GAC Rosa Challenge Tour.

Tomkiewicz played a key role in ensuring the event met the highest organisational and media standards, uniting the Polish golf community behind a shared vision. Its success placed Poland firmly back on the international professional golf map and led to Ministry of Sport funding being awarded to a professional golf event for the first time, with the tournament returning again in 2025.

“There are many different things involved in my work. We organise tournaments, create opportunities for PGA Professionals, and try to involve as many members as possible in our activities,” he explained.

As Vice President of the PGA of Poland, Tomkiewicz has also contributed to strategic leadership, supporting initiatives in disability golf, professional competition pathways, and commercial development to ensure the organisation’s long-term sustainability.

Looking ahead, he highlighted the rapid growth of golf in Poland and the increasing demand for qualified PGA Professionals:

“Golf in Poland is growing very quickly. Last year our PGA Professionals issued around 1,700 green cards, and this year it will be more than 3,000. That means we need many more PGA Professionals in the coming years,” said Tomkiewicz.

Reflecting on advice for the next generation of professionals, he emphasised the importance of continuous learning:

“The most important thing is to develop all the time. Don’t stop after your education – keep learning, keep improving. That’s the way to create better golf and a better life in the profession,” he added.

Tomkiewicz now joins a prestigious international roll of honour of 5-Star Professionals, reflecting both his personal achievements and his significant contribution to the growth and development of the PGA profession in Poland.

Jim van Heuven van Staereling, Director of Education at the PGA of Holland, has been named the recipient of the CPG Special Recognition Award, in recognition of his exceptional and long-standing support of the CPG and his tireless dedication to education and golf development at both national and international level.

The Special Recognition Award acknowledges individuals whose commitment, support and personal contribution have gone above and beyond in advancing the work of the CPG and its Member Countries.

Over several decades, van Heuven van Staereling has played a central role in shaping professional education pathways, supporting PGA Professionals, and fostering collaboration across borders.

Reacting to the news during the CPG Festival of Golf at Porto Carras Grand Resort as part of the CPG’s Annual Awards Supported by Rolex, van Heuven van Staereling admitted the recognition came as a surprise:

“I was really flabbergasted when I received the message. I’m very proud of the award, but for me it’s not the end — I want to go on, because we are just making change,” he said.

Having begun his formal involvement in PGA education in 1997, van Heuven van Staereling initially volunteered his time before becoming Director of Education at the PGA of Holland in 2011, a role he continues to hold today that has since seen him influence every single Professional in the country.

Throughout that journey, he has worked closely with CPG and PGA colleagues across Europe and beyond, helping to modernise education systems and encourage closer cooperation between PGAs, federations and other stakeholders.

van Heuven van Staereling has been one of the CPG’s most trusted and committed contributors, consistently giving his time, expertise and energy to support the organisation’s strategic and educational ambitions. Whether through his leadership within working groups, his involvement in international education initiatives, or his willingness to share best practice across borders, he has played a key role in helping the CPG strengthen its collaborative approach and raise standards across the global PGA network.

“This recognition is not only for me — it’s also for the PGA of Holland and all the countries I’ve worked with. Everything we’ve achieved has been done together,” he added.

A passionate advocate for collaboration, van Heuven van Staereling has consistently championed the evolving role of the PGA Professional — not only as a coach, but as an educator, mentor and guide helping people progress from A to B, both in golf and in life.

“I believe strongly in working together. You cannot help people on your own – progress comes when we share knowledge, support each other and keep learning,” he said.

He has also been a vocal supporter of innovation in education, embracing digital tools, hybrid learning models and emerging technologies to enhance professional development, while maintaining the importance of human connection in coaching and learning.

Trackman has been awarded one of the CPG’s most prestigious honours, the Christer Lindberg Bowl, in recognition of its significant and lasting contribution to the world of golf.

The Christer Lindberg Bowl is presented to individuals or organisations that have demonstrated exceptional influence and service to the game. Trackman’s pioneering technology has fundamentally changed how golf is taught, coached, played, watched, and enjoyed, impacting professionals, facilities, and golfers at every level.

The award, named after CPG’s first Chairman and a leading educationalist, carries a strong legacy linked to learning and development within the profession — an area that aligns closely with Trackman’s long-standing commitment to education.

Accepting the award on behalf of Trackman during the CPG Festival of Golf at Porto Carras Grand Resort as part of the CPG’s Annual Awards Supported by Rolex, Thomas Erik Bosco highlighted the importance of education within the company’s mission:

“Education is a huge part of everything we do. From the very beginning, Trackman has focused on helping coaches and the wider golf world learn through data, feedback, and the tools we provide. Panagiotis ‘Takis’ Gonias has been named the recipient of the CPG President’s Award for Golf Development, recognising his outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of golf in Greece, and his long-standing support of the PGA of Greece.

The President’s Award for Golf Development acknowledges individuals or projects that have made a meaningful and sustained impact on growing the game. A PGA of Greece Member since 2008, Gonias has played a unique role in broadening golf’s appeal in the country, drawing on his background as a professional football player and manager to introduce new audiences to the sport.

Accepting the award as part of the CPG Annual Awards Supported by Rolex during the CPG Festival of Golf at Porto Carras Grand Resort in Greece, Gonias reflected on what golf has meant to him since transitioning from football:

“Golf came into my life when I finished football, and it made me very happy. I had fantastic moments and met fantastic people. Only golf can give me this feeling,” said Gonias.

Gonias has been a strong advocate for golf’s crossover appeal, using his profile within Greek and international sport to act as an ambassador for the game. His efforts have included promoting FootGolf in Greece, supporting Pro-Am initiatives, and encouraging athletes from other sports to engage with golf in a fun, accessible way.

“Golf and football have many things in common – you have to train, you have to think. But in golf you are alone, and that builds character and strength,” he added.

Through his involvement with initiatives such as the AEGEAN Airlines Pro-Am and his close alignment with the PGA of Greece, Gonias has helped strengthen relationships between golf, business, and the wider sporting community, contributing to increased visibility and participation.

Reflecting on Gonias’ impact, George Diakou, President of the PGA of Greece, said:

“Takis has been an exceptional ambassador for golf in Greece. His background in professional football gave him a unique platform to introduce new audiences to the game, while his long-term support of the PGA of Greece and key initiatives has delivered real benefits for our members and the wider golf community.”

Gonias also emphasised the importance of enjoyment as a foundation for golf development:

“The most important thing is to have fun. To finish a round and feel happy – that feeling makes people want to come back and helps the game grow,” he said.

In September, two highly anticipated GolfSixes League tournaments concluded successfully in Tianjin and Beijing respectively, bringing a series of spectacular sports feasts to golf lovers across the country.

Tianjin Stop: 72 Players Gather to Compete on the Green

On September 13th, the first Golfsixes tournament officially kicked off at Tianjin 27 Golf Club. On that day, 72 golfers from all over China, including Beijing, Tianjin, and Hainan, gathered here. Among them were both experienced senior golfers and energetic new-generation enthusiasts, all competing fiercely for their golf dreams.

Tianjin 27 Golf Club provided an excellent competitive environment for the tournament with its high-quality venue conditions and complete supporting facilities. During the competition, the players were in high spirits—every swing was accurate and powerful, and every putt was focused. On the green, white golf balls traced beautiful arcs in the air, and the players’ figures looked particularly vigorous under the sun. Whether it was a precise chip shot or a long-distance drive, all demonstrated the players’ superb skills and good psychological quality. After several rounds of intense competition, the players’ scores were neck and neck, pushing the on-site atmosphere to a climax time and again.

Beijing Stop: 40 Players Compete on the Same Stage, Continuing the Tournament’s Splendor

One week later, on September 20th, the excitement of the Golfsixs tournament spread to Beijing Jingshanhu Golf Club. Although there were 40 participants in the Beijing stop, the players’ enthusiasm showed no sign of abating, and the intensity of the competition was equally amazing. Players from all over the country, filled with love for golf and desire for victory, launched a new round of competition on this scenic course.

The unique terrain and well-designed fairways of Beijing Jingshanhu Golf Club posed no small challenge to the players, but also stimulated their stronger competitive potential. During the game, the players gave full play to their technical advantages, flexibly responding to various complex situations, and every swing embodied wisdom and strength. The audience on the sidelines constantly cheered for the players’ wonderful performances, with applause and cheers rising one after another, becoming a beautiful scene on the field.

Glory Moment: Top Three Winners Emerge from Each Stop, Exclusive Honors Salute Dedication

After several rounds of intense competition, the top three players of each stop were determined respectively in Tianjin and Beijing.

At the award ceremony of the Tianjin stop, when the host announced the list of winners, the three award-winning players had bright eyes filled with excitement and proud smiles on their faces. On the green of Tianjin 27 Golf Club, they won the unanimous recognition of the on-site audience and opponents with their outstanding skills, tenacious fighting spirit, and good sportsmanship.

In Beijing, the three outstanding players also gained their own moment of glory. From accurately tackling the complex fairways of Jingshanhu Golf Club to overcoming pressure to complete crucial putts, every moment of their performance left a deep impression on the onlookers. The cheers when the results were announced even resounded across the course.

Subsequently, the award guests of the two stops presented custom-made medals and exclusive trophies to the winning players respectively. These honors are not only a recognition of the players’ strength, but also the best reward for their continuous efforts to break through themselves on the road of golf. Many award-winning players said after the tournament: “We not only won honors in this competition, but also met many golf lovers from all over the country. We exchanged skills and shared our passion together, and the atmosphere was really great. We will continue to polish our skills in the future and strive to show a better version of ourselves in more tournaments.”

Clubs and junior golfers sign up for GolfSixes leagues in large numbers and enjoy new end of season Open event

Scottish Golf is delighted to report a record-breaking season of GolfSixes League action in 2025 featuring juniors from all regions of the country.

GolfSixes League, the national programme that caters for young, beginner golfers by providing a fun introduction to team golf in a pairs scramble format, has proved to be smash hit ever since it was piloted as part of Scottish Golf’s National Junior Framework in 2018.

This year higher levels of participation (and fun!) were achieved through both the GolfSixes League core programme and also the new-look end of year Open.

During 2025:

• 145 clubs signed up for Golf Sixes events (up from 137 in 2024)
• 33 local leagues were in play (up from 30 in 2024)
• Around 2000 beginner boys and girls got involved in GolfSixes activities
• Remote clubs enjoyed GolfSixes through a new ‘online’ league initiative

The season ended with a bang when 250 juniors from all six regions took part in the inaugural Scottish GolfSixes Open at Blairgowrie Golf Club in partnership with PING.

The Open brought together teams from the 33 leagues in one setting for a two-day event that replaced the previous format of regional and national finals.

The aims of the Open were simple – to reach a larger number and more diverse group of clubs, including rural and island clubs, and host an inspiring national event that would create memories to last a lifetime.

As well as playing a GolfSixes tournament, the boys and girls were able to enjoy skills challenges and interact with their peers in other small-sided games on and off the course.

Royal Dornoch pipped North Inch Juniors to the Open title with Portlethen, Dunblane, Banchory, Annanhill, Kings and Airdrie golf clubs all among the prize winners in categories such as nearest the pin and the dartboard challenge.

Fraser Crawford, participation manager at Scottish Golf, said: “The 2025 GolfSixes season has been a brilliant success thanks to the combined efforts of the clubs, the team managers and volunteers and, of course, the super enthusiastic youngsters who took part in our activities.

“The aim of GolfSixes, backed by The R&A and Golf Foundation, has always been to provide a fun introduction to golf for boys and girls that supports their development and retention within the sport.

“Team golf is absolutely central to this.

“If they enjoy the team activities and experience at one of our development events, then learning the fundamental skills follows as a natural consequence.

“This year it was amazing to have 145 clubs from every corner of the country sign up to the GolfSixes League programme.

“We were also delighted to deliver an online league that enabled clubs in more remote or island areas to join in the fun and compete against other clubs for the first time.

“The real thrill for us as a participation team was watching 250 juniors gather at Blairgowrie for the Open and see how much fun they had.

“The smiles and the laughter heard over those two days tell a story that is hard to convey simply through numbers.

“The kids had a ball, and it truly was a national celebration of junior golf.

“The Open complemented perfectly the leagues that have been going on throughout the year.

“In past years, only local winners progressed to the regional and national finals. This new format opened up that opportunity for many more youngsters and clubs and was really well received.

“We’ll now look to build on this year’s success with our expanded plans for 2026 which aim to encourage more clubs to join up and more young people to get involved in our flagship programme which is now well established as a key part of the junior player pathway in Scotland.”

When you think of the absolute pinnacle of professional golf, the name Collin Morikawa is impossible to ignore. Winner of both the PGA Championship and The Open, Morikawa is the epitome of modern professional golf: technically refined, mentally strong, and leaving nothing to chance.

But how does such a top player actually prepare for a major like The Open, with all the unique conditions that a links course like Royal Portrush entails?

Thanks to the special collaboration between Ivar van der Moolen and Rick Sessinghaus, he was given an exclusive glimpse into Morikawa’s preparation.

Sessinghaus, Morikawa’s PGA coach for over twenty years and director of FlowCode Golf, and Van der Moolen, PGA of Holland Member and mental performance coach since 1993 and developer of MTP, have been joining forces for the past year and a half. Together, they share a deep passion: helping golfers of all levels perform better and with more enjoyment on the golf course by strengthening the mental aspect of the game.

The Collaboration: A Mental Masterclass

When Ivar van der Moolen joined Rick Sessinghaus’ coaching team 1,5 year ago, a fruitful collaboration emerged, focused on knowledge exchange and development. This resulted in a unique opportunity: experiencing Morikawa’s preparation for The Open at Royal Portrush up close.

“A fantastic experience,” said Van der Moolen. “It’s impressive to see how a player of Morikawa’s caliber prepares for a tournament of this magnitude down to the smallest details.”

For Coaches: the key takeaway is that mental readiness is not an add-on to technical training — it’s embedded into every decision, drill, and discussion.

Adapting the Game to Royal Portrush

Royal Portrush is not just any golf course. The wind, the rugged terrain, the thick rough, and the changeable weather make it a world-class challenge. For a player who has mainly experience on the American tour, that means serious adjustments.

• Morikawa paid close attention to studying the grass types around the greens — which are significantly different in Northern Ireland than on American courses.
• Putting on slower greens compared to the PGA tour also required adjustment, as did the choice of landing spots from the tee in relation to the bunkers.
• During the practice rounds, Sessinghaus and Morikawa closely examined the influence of the weather and the layout of the course. Nothing was left to chance. Every shot, every lie was evaluated with a view to the most likely conditions during the tournament.

For Coaches: Build adaptability into practice. Create sessions that expose players to variable conditions and require decision-making, not just repetition.

Mental Focus in a Busy Week

In addition to the technical adjustments, there is the mental aspect – perhaps the most important part of preparing for a major. “What struck me,” says Van der Moolen, “is how well Collin sets his mental goals, even during practice rounds. He’s not just hitting balls; everything is done with a clear plan.”

The public wanting autographs, journalists requesting interviews between training sessions, and the constant pressure of being a multiple major winner – these are all elements that can disrupt mental balance. Sessinghaus acts as an anchor in all of this. He ensures that Morikawa stays in his own “bubble” and maintains his focus.

For Coaches: Encourage players to set clear mental and technical goals for every round and training session. This instils intent and keeps practice purposeful.

Details Make the Difference

Nothing in Morikawa’s preparation is left to chance:

• During short game training, specific club choices were discussed and adapted to the circumstances.
• Putting was where the finishing touches were made: how hard should a ball be rolled on greens that are slightly slower than normal? How does the break change in combination with the wind?
• “Even the lesser shots during the practice rounds are analysed and evaluated,” says Van der Moolen. “Not with frustration, but with curiosity. What can we learn from this? How do we ensure that this does not happen during the tournament, and when it does happen, how do we deal with it?

For Coaches: Model this mindset with your students. Review both good and bad shots in training, focusing on “what can we learn?” rather than blame.

Dealing with Expectations

An important part of preparation is dealing with the expectations of others – the public, the media, and even your own team. For a player like Morikawa, with two majors already under his belt, expectations are high.

Rick Sessinghaus helps Morikawa turn that pressure into focus.

• Instead of thinking about winning, the emphasis is on the process and what you as a player and team have 100% control over: preparing optimally, making the right choices, maintaining mental calm, and remaining flexible under changing circumstances. The result is what ultimately matters.
• The process is a prerequisite for achieving the optimal result. And is therefore sacred.

For Coaches: Teach athletes to separate controllables from uncontrollables. Build routines that anchor them in the present task, especially under pressure.

How Coaches Can Apply These Insights

While your players might not be walking the fairways of Royal Portrush under TV cameras, the principles are universal:

• Plan with purpose — give every session a clear focus.
• Train for adaptability — change variables, conditions, and challenges.
• Build mental routines — protect focus in high-distraction environments.
• Normalise reflection — treat every shot as a learning opportunity.
• Focus on process — results follow from great preparation.

These approaches not only improve performance but also deepen player engagement and trust in your coaching.

In the 2025 Golf Club Software Technology Report released by Golf Genius, Players 1st and several trade associations, a significant truth was uncovered: 66% of golf clubs surveyed in the UK & Ireland would consider switching software providers. So, what are the reasons for this and how could they impact a golf club when planning out future software requirements?

In short, product quality played a much bigger role than product cost. In fact, only 10% of golf clubs identified cost as a factor for considering moving away from their current supplier.

48% of respondents identified ‘Product does not meet their requirement’ as a reason for their consideration to switch. In other words, whether software fulfils their needs or not was at the core of this concern, and highlights the importance of continuous product development to meet club expectations.

“The underlying problem that our industry faces is that it is hard for one supplier to have expertise across all these fields, to do everything really well,” Mike Zisman, Golf Genius Founder and Executive Chairman.

Product development was also a key factor towards a golf club’s consideration to switch, with one in four clubs expressing a desire for more innovation in their software tools. As golf clubs navigate increasing expectations from members, tighter financial constraints, and more complex operations, standing still is no longer acceptable – products must be constantly improved, updated and streamlined.

Interestingly, only 13% of golf clubs cited ‘Supplier support’ as a contributing factor. This suggests that while help desks may be reachable, the systems themselves aren’t evolving or aligning with club needs—higher levels of support can be linked to the introduction of new products, features and capabilities (because customers need more help using them), and so support levels are often a strong indicator as to whether suppliers are developing their products or not.

With two-thirds of golf clubs considering a software switch, this report has unearthed a growing problem in the market that to this point, has not been highlighted: many golf clubs feel stuck but find the process of change daunting. Nevertheless, there is a strong interest in exploring better-supported, more innovative alternatives—indicating a clear demand for solutions that are forward-thinking and responsive to the unique needs of today’s golf clubs.

As the number of ‘best-in-breed’ providers in the market grows – specialising in Tee Sheets, PoS, Membership solutions and more—the opportunity to address club manager’s appetites for alternative solutions is being realised. While MTP is built with golf performance in mind, its impact often extends far beyond the course. By helping individuals build focus, emotional control, and resilience under pressure, the programme not only supports better play – but also promotes stronger mental health in day-to-day life. As conversations around wellbeing grow across sport and society, this partnership reinforces the CPG’s commitment to supporting PGA Members and their communities in all aspects of personal and professional development.

As part of the collaboration, the Affiliate Programme will be made available through the CPG Learning Institute Hub, providing PGA Members and their students across the CPG’s global network with opportunities to access proven tools for developing focus, confidence, and resilience.

The UK study found that most (72%) of coaches, teachers, and outdoor leaders are not properly trained on sun or heat protection, and 43% feel unsupported in protecting the young people they work with. Rising temperatures and increasing UV risks should raise concern and require action.

The Melanoma Fund conducted the research to mark Sun Awareness Week, 12th – 18th May 2025, and increase understanding of the challenges coaches, leaders, and teachers face around sun safety for the children in their care.

Key findings include:

• 72% of coaches, leaders, and teachers have never received any training on sun or heat protection
• Only 16% of organisations have a separate sun protection policy
• 43% of those working with children outdoors say they feel unsupported or poorly supported by their organisation
• Just 4% believe all the children they work with truly understand sun safety
• 80% of respondents would like access to free or discounted sunscreen
• Over two-thirds reported sun or heat-related incidents, including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion

“These findings are concerning, but unfortunately, not surprising. They highlight why we support this sector with free, practical sun safety resources. Although so many leaders are on the case and proactive, these findings are a wake-up call for everyone, including parents who entrust their children to organised outdoor activities,” says Michelle Baker, CEO of the Melanoma Fund.

“With over two-thirds of respondents reporting sun or heat-related incidents – including cancelled sessions, sunburned children, and heat exhaustion—it’s obvious that action is needed,” adds Michelle Baker. “We provide clear, practical solutions that can help address this issue, and ultimately, protect the next generation from skin cancer.”

Sun safety habits begin in childhood, as does melanoma. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life. Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults, which makes it even more crucial that we protect children from harmful UV exposure.

Parents also play a vital role in setting a good example for sun safety. By showing children how to properly apply sunscreen, rather than just smearing it on their faces, they help teach kids how to protect themselves effectively. This is crucial when children participate in outdoor activities.

Outdoor coaches and leaders are uniquely positioned to lead by example and instil sun-safe habits early on. But this new data shows that only 11% of coaches regularly apply sunscreen in front of children, and just 19% wear a sun hat consistently.

To help organisations and individuals address gaps in education, awareness, and support, the Melanoma Fund offers two key resources:

• Sunguarding Course: A free online course that offers accreditation and 3 CIMSPA CPD points, designed to help anyone working outdoors understand and manage the risks of UV exposure.
• Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code: Aimed at empowering organisations to create and implement sun safety policies specifically for children in outdoor sports and activities, educating both adults and children.

Sport England is focused on increasing participation in youth sports and physical activity, with great success. However, UV risks in outdoor activities remain largely unaddressed. Backed by hundreds of national governing bodies of sport, the Melanoma Fund is pushing for more awareness and action, protecting young participants from these risks to prevent skin cancer in the next generation.

Held from 21–25 April at Ada Golf Club in Belgrade, the five-day programme marked the start of structured, professional coach education for five Serbian candidates: Aleksandar Flanđunis, Mihailo Dimitrijević, Branimir Gudelj, Lazar Pantelić and Puniša Plazina.

The camp was the in-person delivery activity for the CPG Apprentice Professional Course formerly Initial Professional Education – IPE], a comprehensive coaching-focused programme delivered in partnership with PGA Member Countries to prepare aspiring coaches with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours  to get them on the pathway needed for a successful career in golf.

The delivery was organised in collaboration with the PGA of Serbia, the Golf Association of Serbia, and Ada Golf Club, and led by CPG Tutor and Head of Education for the PGA of Holland, Jim van Heuven van Staereling.

“The candidates in Serbia have shown a strong foundation and motivation, and I look forward to continuing to work with them as they develop professionally,” said van Heuven van Staereling.

PGA of Serbia General Secretary, Nebojša Lazic, added: “The week was a big success for the students, but also provided a chance to have constructive conversations with Jim with a shared vision of supporting each other to bringing value to the sport.

“We talked about further development of current market trends in Serbia and how this could help focus coaches’ education on certain parts of the game, audience or groups, along with organising tournaments where we pair young players with the best amateurs and other ways to mix players to increase the quality and balance of knowledge and experience.”

Over the course of the week, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions, including topics such as ball flight analysis, junior coaching, and group lesson delivery.

The live camp also marked the beginning of an extended, blended-learning journey, with participants now set to complete webinars, elearning, coursework, and practical assignments before final assessments later in the year – all delivered and administered via the CPG Learning Institute Hub Learning Management System [LMS].

The CPG extends its thanks to the PGA of Serbia, Golf Association of Serbia, and Ada Golf Club for their support in hosting and promoting the camp. The success of this delivery highlights the power of partnership in building sustainable, local pathways for professional golf development.

Excitement is building in Poland as preparations for the 2025 GolfSixes League season are well underway, with the first tournament teeing off in less than a month.

Led by the Polish Golf Union GolfSixes League Project Leader, Janusz Mojsiewicz, the initiative continues to grow in strength, combining grassroots development with a strong team ethos to give children their first taste of competitive golf in a fun and inclusive environment.

“GolfSixes is not just about competition – it’s about creating community, learning values, and helping young people take their first steps in the game,” said Mojsiewicz. “With the Mini League launching for the first time in 2025, we’re reaching even more kids in even more places, including schools and sports fields.”

The 2025 calendar features six qualifying events and a national final, and for the first time ever, the GolfSixes Mini League will bring shorter, introductory tournaments to schools and summer camps across the country. Participants will use plastic clubs and adapted courses, making golf accessible wherever young players are.

A strong partnership with the PGA of Poland is also central to the programme, as assistant instructors will help deliver events as part of their training – supporting both their own development and that of the next generation of golfers.

GolfSixes League is now active in more than 20 countries and continues to inspire children around the world to enjoy golf in a team setting, collect their first on-course experiences, and feel the thrill of representing a team – helping drive long-term participation and retention in the sport.

The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh hosted the world leading scientific congress over two days of sessions, with experts in attendance from The R&A, Ladies European Tour, DP World Tour, G4D Tour, the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG) and delegates from over 20 countries.

The conference shared insights on the health benefits of golf, with golfers enjoying a reduction in over 40 major chronic diseases, better well-being and length of life.

Dr Andrew Murray, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer for the DP World Tour and a Health Consultant with The R&A, was at the forefront of organising the event.

Bigger than ever

“It was a Congress bigger than ever before, with more speakers too, which was fantastic,” said Murray, “It was a great opportunity to get together and then think about the health benefits of golf – how we can promote health through major events, how we can help people be at their best, maximising performance and decreasing illness and injury. Then it’s just about giving everyone the opportunity to play golf.

“I think everyone who attended is very passionate about golf and health, very knowledgeable as well, and I really enjoyed the two days.”

Stephen Gallacher, the Ryder Cup star and four-time DP World Tour winner, was among those who took part in the discussions as delegates learned about the mental fitness of competing at the highest level.

Gallacher, who played for 28 years on the DP World Tour, said, “The great thing about the conference was that it was all about golf, all about the positives of the sport for longevity of life. You can start at such a young age and you can still be playing at such a late age.

“It was important also to discuss how much the golfing world has changed, how much the health side has come into it. It’s changed a lot since I was a kid, like proper advice on nutrition, recovery and hydration. There is so much data and technology to plot their goals. As the home of golf in Scotland, it was also fitting to be in such a beautiful place to talk about it.”

Key topics

Attendees also delved into key topics like injury prevention and management, adaptations for disabled golfers, nutrition, strength and conditioning. Research presented from Finland, Sweden and Scotland highlighted that:

• Golf can provide health enhancing physical activity for people of all ages
• Regular physical activity achieved through golf can help prevent and treat more than 40 major chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, depression, anxiety and dementia
• Golf also promotes mental well-being, social connections and connection with nature
• Golf has additional benefits compared to walking

Fantastic opportunity

Maree Todd, Sport Minister at the Scottish Government, said, “Regular physical activity and participation in sport is one of the best things you can do for physical, mental and social health. The Congress was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and experience, to celebrate what golf is accomplishing and to understand barriers to participation and how we can work to remove them.”

Dr Julia Kettinen, researcher and Golf Exercise Medicine Specialist, added, “Our research highlights that golf can help people achieve the physical activity they need. Golf also kept senior golfers active during the pandemic and supported their quality of life.

“Even a single 18-hole round can offer significant cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, particularly for older adults, compared to regular walking. Globally, more and more people are playing golf – over 100 million now – which is great for both individuals and populations.”

Improving mental health

Although there is compelling evidence of mental health and wellbeing benefits through golf and other sports, life as a professional athlete can be incredibly demanding, with pressure to perform, much time away from friends and family, and at times intense and unwanted scrutiny in social media and in the media.

The golfing industry has recognised these challenges, and conducted research with the players to implement mental health and well-being toolkits, emergency action plans, mind gyms, and a network of specialists for the players, collaborating with tennis and Formula 1 experts who also have intensive travel schedules.

Dr Phil Hopley, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cognacity, who has been instrumental as Mental Fitness Coach with the McLaren F1 Team on their journey from midfielders to World Champions said, “I felt honoured to be at the conference.

“We’ve all got mental health, but it changes sometimes across the course of a week, sometimes during the course of the day. So we can be flourishing or can be mentally well, or we can be struggling a bit, have a mental health problem or a mental disorder.

Collaborative work

“There are so many mental and physical benefits to participating in sport, and we know how important the mind is to being at your best, be that on the Formula 1 track, playing in the Champions League, playing in a golf major or just in life in general.

“Cognacity are delighted to be working with The R&A and the DP World Tour providing psychology and mental fitness support to players, caddies and Tour staff. The untimely passing of top professional golfer Grayson Murray last year was a painful reminder of how challenging life on Tour can be. That is why the collaborative work that golf is prioritising with IOC mental health experts and the provision of industry leading facilities like the Mental Fitness Centre at the Dubai Desert Classic is so important.”

Alyson Mckechin, Head of Golf It! in Glasgow, was also among the speakers in the impressive surroundings of the Royal College, fresh from recently winning Coach of the Year at the Scottish Golf Awards.

Gallacher, the founder of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation which continues to blossom, summed the sessions up. “Our mission is to help and encourage golfers to live a healthy life and enjoy their golf,” he added. “This scientific Congress coming to Scotland was great as it helps us understand the health benefits, hear about how golf is even being prescribed now in Scotland and further afield, and also look at supporting the mental health of players.

“I have had some incredible highs like winning in Dubai, India and Scotland, and being on the winning side at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, but life in professional sport can be lonely and tough, so the work on mental health is so important”.

PilsnerGolf Resort Hořehledy in Czech Republic has once again demonstrated its impressive commitment to junior golf, winning the 2025 GolfSixes League International Simulator Championship – while also securing second place.

The team of Josef Dubisar, Adam Hrdina, Krystof Kopcak, Jakub Voharcik, Lea Krehlikova and Jakub Zikes were victorious in an example highlighting the club’s dedication to fostering a cohesive, team-based environment that encourages children to both learn the game and grow together.

The championship saw teams from across 6 different countries get together and play a fun competition during the time of year when the days are short.

According to Martin Kopčák, General Manager of PilsnerGolf Resort Hořehledy, these successes stem from putting the emphasis on building a sense of community rather than solely focusing on hitting more balls. “We focus on creating a team and memorable experiences,” he notes. “That comfort and friendly atmosphere transfers into their game and behavior during tournaments.”

PilsnerGolf Resort Hořehledy runs an inclusive junior program for around 25 children who train at a performance level, with an additional 20 players moving through beginner to advanced tiers. The club’s collaboration with local schools is a crucial element in broadening golf’s appeal among children, with plans to expand these partnerships even further in the upcoming school year.

Support for junior players reaches far beyond the practice range. Kopčák received numerous messages from club members eager to see the children compete in the GolfSixes Championship, and congratulations poured in after their victory.

CPG ANNUAL AWARDS SUPPORTED BY ROLEX

The CPG President’s Award for Golf Development for 2024 has been awarded to the Golf & Health Project, acknowledging the visionary efforts of the Project’s leadership, in its ground-breaking role in highlighting the significance of the sport’s benefits, and sharing these benefits far and wide.

Since 2016 the Project has worked to provide an academic backing and voice to the benefits that golf can bring and has been significantly driven by current DP World Tour and Ryder Cup Europe Chief Medical Officer, Dr Andrew Murray, his predecessor, Dr Roger Hawkes.

The Project’s pioneering work to evaluate existing research, identify potential gaps and opportunities for future research activities, and foster collaboration between the wide variety of health-related research projects taking place around the world.

But a primary objective of the Project has been to not only seek academic support of these benefits, but also to help communicate these benefits both in, and out of, the sport.

The promotion of the many psychological and physical benefits – such as golfers live on average of five years longer than non-golfers, and those who play better tend to live longer too – has helped to improve the sport’s image, the reasoning for taking part, and acceptance as a health-enhancing activity.

“I was sat with Dr. Roger Hawkes at breakfast during the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles when Roger shared his thoughts and insights on the health benefits of golf and asked for my support of the project both personally and from CPG,” said CPG Chief Executive, Ian Randell. “I was immediately intrigued and delighted to offer our full support from day one and it is fantastic to see the impact that it continues to make in promoting our sport.”

The award was collected on behalf of the Project team at the CPG Festival of Golf at Saïdia Resorts in Morocco by Dr Omar Malik, Consultant Neurologist at Cromwell Hospital and Golf & Health Project co-founder and Board Member:

“We are absolutely delighted that the work gas been recognised, it’s amazing,” said Malik.

“Considering how important the work has been in terms of shifting the momentum for golf participation then it is so nice to have recognition. Much hard work was done particularly by Roger and Andrew, and we are so happy that it has been so well received, especially by golf’s national bodies around the world.”

The Project has also been a great example of collaboration across the global golf industry with the Project initially receiving significant support from the World Golf Foundation comprising of at the time The R&A, USGA, the world’s various male and female tours, the Masters Tournament and PGA of America, along with support from the Ryder Cup European Development Trust [RCEDT], EDGA and the CPG itself as well.

“We have a lot of people to thank around the world for their support of the Project over the past 8-10 years, both for their financial support that has made it possible, but also their philosophical support in getting behind the concept of Golf & Health and each playing their part in supporting and promoting the benefits identified,” added Murray.

“The ability for us to work together in this way has set an example for all sports and has also resulted in significant developments and activities as a direct result of our friends and colleagues’ efforts in this space.”

For example golf’s joint response to the COVID pandemic, and ultimately a key part of golf being able to get going again during lockdowns around the world, was due in part at least to the groundwork laid in proving the sport can be played in a safe, outdoor environment, combined with the connections already created with policymakers and stakeholders in governmental leadership positions.

More recently, projects are being developed where golf is being prescribed by health professionals as part of recovery and rehabilitation regimes. And in the professional world, much of this work has resulted in significantly enhanced provisions for players across the world’s tours that help to support their physical and mental wellbeing and performance.

CPG ANNUAL AWARDS SUPPORTED BY ROLEX

Former Executive Director – Governance and Chief of Staff of The R&A, David Rickman MBE, has been awarded one of the CPG’s highest honours, the Christer Lindberg Bowl.

The award recognises those that have had a significant impact upon the world of golf, and there may be no better example than the man who oversaw the governance of the sport in collaboration with his colleagues from the USGA for 37 years.

“It is a huge honour to receive the award, particularly when I look at the list of illustrious past winners and see names such as Sir Michael Bonallack, Peter Dawson and John Paramor who I worked with both on and off the course,” said Rickman during his acceptance speech that was shown during the CPG Festival of Golf at Saïdia Resorts in Morocco.

“I have many happy memories of working with the team at the CPG for many years as part of our work in the governance of the game…and of course working with the Member Countries. The R&A’s responsibilities are wide and we take them very seriously, and we can only do the best job for our sport by understanding the perspectives from each country across the world to help us understand the global game. I am hugely thankful to be recognised by the CPG and all these countries.”

The Christer Lindberg Bowl was created in recognition of the CPG’s first Chairman, providing acknowledgement to individuals and organisations that embody passion and influence within golf and have dedicated themselves to servicing the sport.

Rickman has been a part of, and for over 25 years was at the helm of, The R&A’s governance function, probably most commonly associated with the rules of golf, but also including Amateur Status, equipment standards, and handicapping.

His responsibilities also increased towards the end of his tenure incorporating HR and facilities functions and has even been instrumental in developing the new R&A staff building in St Andrews, at which he recently had the honour of breaking first ground using a special 1890s Bogey hole cutter provided by The R&A‘s World Golf Museum.

Rickman has been a familiar face with the CPG and its Member Countries having been hugely supportive with the organisation’s development since its beginnings in the early 90s, including various occasions to connect with PGAs and PGA Professionals at events and conferences, and more recently with the extensive consultations with the PGA community around updates to the Rules of Amateur Status.

Since joining in 1987, Rickman has also become a familiar sight at the world’s greatest amateur and professional tournaments with no less than 34 Open Championships under his belt, 28 of those as Chief Referee.

Working at over 130 events including the Masters Tournaments, US Opens, Walker Cups, and many more, it was his eighth AIG Women’s Open where he finally hung up his stopwatch at where other than St Andrews last August.

Most recently, just after his retirement had begun, Rickman was also recognised by the King Charles III and the UK royal family with an MBE, one of the highest honours a Briton can receive, for his services to golf.
