Spain becomes the first country in Continental Europe to host the Ryder Cup twice

The Ryder Cup will return to Spain in 2031 when Camiral in Costa Brava, near Barcelona, hosts the biennial contest between Europe and the United States for the first time.

Camiral will follow Bethpage Black in New York (2025), Adare Manor in Ireland (2027) and Hazeltine National in Minnesota (2029) as the venue for golf’s greatest team contest.

It will be the second time Spain has hosted the Ryder Cup, 34 years after the legendary Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997, becoming the first country in Continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup. That honour recognises the hugely significant contribution that Spanish golf has played in the history of the Ryder Cup, with 11 Spaniards having represented Team Europe, the joint second highest of any European country after England.

The stunning Costa Brava and Barcelona will provide the backdrop for the 2031 Ryder Cup, welcoming international visitors from across the world to a region renowned for its breathtaking coastline, world-class hospitality and vibrant cultural heritage.

Costa Brava and Barcelona have a rich legacy of hosting major international sporting events, including the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the F1 Spanish Grand Prix, the MotoGP Catalunya, and Champions League and La Liga football at Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona.

As part of the agreement for the region to host the Ryder Cup in six years time, Estrella Damm, the brewing company founded in Barcelona in 1876, will become the Official Beer of the 2031 Ryder Cup. They will also become the title partner of the DP World Tour’s Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship for five years beginning in 2026, with the 2028, 2029 and 2030
tournaments taking place at Camiral.

We have also secured significant support from the private sector in Costa Brava and Barcelona, including Estrella Damm’s long-term commitment, which will play a big role in the road to Ryder Cup 2031 as we showcase the region to our global audience.”

The Minister of the Presidency of the Government of Catalonia, Albert Dalmau, said: “Hosting the Ryder Cup is a commitment to the territorial cohesion of the country and an opportunity to attract high-quality tourism linked to sport, generating a positive economic impact across the entire territory. It demonstrates that Catalonia once again has the highest ambitions to position itself on the international stage and to host top-level competitions. ”

The Minister for Sports of the Government of Catalonia, Berni Álvarez, said: “All stakeholders involved in the signing of this agreement are working to ensure that the benefits of the Ryder Cup reach every corner of Catalonia. Spanish players have been part of some notable European Ryder Cup successes since 1979, with Sergio Garcia the all-time record points scorer from either side with 28½ points from his ten appearances.

The partnership between Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazábal is also the most successful of all time, the legendary pair having won 12 points together for Team Europe, and like Ballesteros in 1997, Olazábal also captained Europe to an iconic victory, masterminding the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012.

Ballesteros and fellow countryman Antonio Garrido were the first players from Continental Europe to represent Europe in the contest in 1979 at The Greenbrier, and were later joined in Team Europe by José María Cañizares, Manuel Piñero and José Rivero. Subsequently, Olazábal and Antonio’s son Ignacio were part of the winning team captained by Ballesteros at Valderrama 18 years later, along with vice-captain Miguel Angel Jiménez, who went on to play in four Ryder Cups.

More recently, Rafa Cabrera Bello was part of the European Team in 2016 and Jon Rahm has featured in the last three Ryder Cups, including the home victories in Paris in 2018 and in Rome two years ago. Both players formed successful partnerships with Garcia in 2016 and 2021 respectively.

There has been at least one Spaniard in the European Team in each Ryder Cup since 1979, the year players from Continental Europe became part of the biennial contest.

Camiral, ranked Spain’s number one golf and wellness resort, opened in 1999 and was acquired by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien in 2008. It has previously hosted the DP World Tour’s Open de España on three occasions, in 2000, 2009 and 2014, and the Catalunya Championship in 2022, as well as the Final Stage of the DP World Tour’s Qualifying School for nine consecutive years from 2008 to 2016.

Luke Donald has named Francesco Molinari as his fourth Vice Captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup which will be played at Bethpage Black, New York, USA from September 26-28, 2025.

Molinari returns to the role having also been a Vice Captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, when Team Europe defeated the United States 16 ½ – 11 ½ at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

The Italian joins his brother Edoardo, Thomas Bjørn and José María Olazábal in Donald’s backroom team as Team Europe aims to retain the Ryder Cup in New York.

Molinari played in the last European team to achieve that feat, securing the half point in the final Singles match against Tiger Woods at Medinah in 2012 which ensured that Olazábal’s team won the Ryder Cup outright 14½-13½.

He previously made his debut alongside his brother Edoardo two years earlier at The Celtic Manor Resort.

In 2018, he became the first European player to win all five of his matches in a Ryder Cup, as Bjørn’s team triumphed 17½-10½ at Le Golf National in Paris. Earlier that year, he won The Open Championship at Carnoustie, becoming Italy’s first Major Champion.

Molinari said: “I’m very happy to be part of the team again. I really enjoyed being part of Luke’s backroom team in Rome and trying to help the players.

“Luke is a very smart, switched on individual. He has been very successful and he is an easy person to work with. It’s been great to see at firsthand how much he is putting into being the Captain. He did the same two years ago and he’s doing it now. He leads by example so that passion trickles down to the players.

“It is going to be a big challenge at Bethpage. You just have to look at the stats to see how difficult it is to win the Ryder Cup away from home. It hasn’t happened that often recently, so it is a big challenge but it is a big opportunity to try to do something that, if it does happen, will be remembered for a long, long time. Everyone will give their best and I am very happy to be able to give my contribution to the team.

“I can’t wait to be there. I can’t wait to try to transmit my experience from Medinah to the players. There will be a few of us who were there in 2012. Some still playing and some others like Luke and myself who are now behind the scenes. Medinah still has a special place in my memories, and in my heart, and I would be really happy and really proud to see this generation of players complete something like that.”

European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald said: “I am really excited to announce that Francesco is going to be joining me again as one of my Vice Captains for New York. He was obviously a big part of the team in Rome and to have him and his experience again means a lot to me personally.

“He knows how to win Ryder Cups, having been on three winning teams, and I think that’s really important for us. We obviously have a tough task ahead of us trying to win away in New York.

“He has an amazing amount of experience – as a rookie in 2010 with his brother Edoardo, playing at Number 12 in the Singles against Tiger in 2012 when he secured the half point that meant we won outright, and in 2018 when he became the only European player to go 5-0 in a Ryder Cup.

“I think he brings a very calm head. He is someone who listens a lot and has good ideas. He speaks up when he feels like he needs to.

“I love his demeanour. He just doesn’t seem to get too flustered. He doesn’t seem to get too high or too low. I think that’s going to be important in a place like New York, an away Ryder Cup. So I love what he brings and I’m very excited that he’s a part of the team again.”

Molinari was a playing Captain for Continental Europe against Great Britian & Ireland in the Team Cup in January, as well as the 2023 version of the event, known as the Hero Cup. He has also played in three editions of the Seve Trophy and in total, he has won six times on the DP World Tour, including twice on home soil, claiming the Italian Open in both 2006 and 2016.

He won the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai in 2018 and has won twice individually on American soil on the PGA TOUR, claiming the Quicken Loans National in 2018 and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2019.

In the 2025 Golf Club Software Technology Report released by Golf Genius, Players 1st and several trade associations, a significant truth was uncovered: 66% of golf clubs surveyed in the UK & Ireland would consider switching software providers. So, what are the reasons for this and how could they impact a golf club when planning out future software requirements?

In short, product quality played a much bigger role than product cost. In fact, only 10% of golf clubs identified cost as a factor for considering moving away from their current supplier.

48% of respondents identified ‘Product does not meet their requirement’ as a reason for their consideration to switch. In other words, whether software fulfils their needs or not was at the core of this concern, and highlights the importance of continuous product development to meet club expectations.

“The underlying problem that our industry faces is that it is hard for one supplier to have expertise across all these fields, to do everything really well,” Mike Zisman, Golf Genius Founder and Executive Chairman.

Product development was also a key factor towards a golf club’s consideration to switch, with one in four clubs expressing a desire for more innovation in their software tools. As golf clubs navigate increasing expectations from members, tighter financial constraints, and more complex operations, standing still is no longer acceptable – products must be constantly improved, updated and streamlined.

Interestingly, only 13% of golf clubs cited ‘Supplier support’ as a contributing factor. This suggests that while help desks may be reachable, the systems themselves aren’t evolving or aligning with club needs—higher levels of support can be linked to the introduction of new products, features and capabilities (because customers need more help using them), and so support levels are often a strong indicator as to whether suppliers are developing their products or not.

With two-thirds of golf clubs considering a software switch, this report has unearthed a growing problem in the market that to this point, has not been highlighted: many golf clubs feel stuck but find the process of change daunting. Nevertheless, there is a strong interest in exploring better-supported, more innovative alternatives—indicating a clear demand for solutions that are forward-thinking and responsive to the unique needs of today’s golf clubs.

As the number of ‘best-in-breed’ providers in the market grows – specialising in Tee Sheets, PoS, Membership solutions and more—the opportunity to address club manager’s appetites for alternative solutions is being realised. As one of the most respected figures in international golf, Pettersen will serve as the face of the Academy, bringing her experience, passion, and leadership to this transformative project. Her appointment marks a major milestone ahead of the Academy’s official launch and underscores Sotogrande’s commitment to creating a world-class destination for golf training and development.

The brand-new Golf Academy, situated at the SO/ Sotogrande Spa and Golf Resort Hotel is set to become a premier hub for golf instruction in southern Europe. It will feature cutting edge Toptracer driving range technology, a natural and covered tee line with VIP practice area, a custom fitting centre, night-time practice facilities, and a bar and café. The facility will also feature a new 9-hole par-3 course designed by former Ryder Cup star, Manuel Piñero, short game practice areas including putting and chipping greens, and a professional coaching zone.
