Stephen Gallacher has been named as the European Captain for the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup Junior Ryder Cup in New York.

The four-time DP World Tour winner returns to the role having led Europe to a record 20½ – 9½ victory against the United States in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy, last year.

Six boys and six girls will take on the US Team in New York from September 23-25, 2025, with the first two days of the Junior Ryder Cup being played at Nassau Country Club before the decisive singles matches are held at Bethpage Black, the Ryder Cup venue, on the eve of the 45th edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.

The Scot ended a run of six straight defeats for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup as they secured a European record 11-point victory in Rome last year, and he will now aim to become the third Captain to lead Europe to victories both home and away, following Macarena Campomanes and Andy Ingram in 2002 and 2006 respectively.

“I’m delighted to have been given the chance to once again lead Team Europe in the 2025 Junior Ryder Cup in New York,” said Gallacher. “It was fantastic to oversee Europe’s record victory in Rome last year and I was so proud of the team and what they managed to achieve.

“The team spirit was unbelievable, and it is an honour to be their Captain once again. I’m looking forward to working with the most exciting future talent in Europe and taking on the United States in New York.

“The Ryder Cup means so much to me, so to be the Junior Captain again and have the chance to create bonds with the 12 players, like we did in Italy, will be very special.

“Being a Captain away from home will be a tough task, but it is a challenge that motivates me, and I will do everything I can to make sure our 12-strong team will be ready to head to New York in 2025.”

The Junior Ryder Cup has produced a plethora of golfing stars and once again in 2025 the best male and female junior amateurs from Europe and the USA will go head-to-head in the mixed event.

English amateur Kris Kim starred in Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup victory in Italy and earlier this year made history as the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event for 11 years when he made the weekend at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson aged just 16.

Helen Briem was also part of Europe’s Junior Ryder Cup winning team last year, and the German amateur made history earlier this month by becoming the first player to win three consecutive LET Access Series titles after triumphs at the Montauban Ladies Open, Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge and Santander Golf Tour-Avila.

Rory McIlroy, Nicolai Højgaard and Nicolas Colsaerts, the 2023 European Ryder Cup Vice-Captain, all triumphed in the junior event before also winning the Ryder Cup, while Suzanne Peterson, Carlota Ciganda and Emily Kristine Pedersen succeeded as amateurs before lifting the Solheim Cup.

Gallacher was part of the European team that defeated the United States to retain the Ryder Cup in 2014, winning 16½ to 11½ at Gleneagles, and boasts an impressive individual playing career with four victories on the DP World Tour.

He has also set up the Stephen Gallacher Foundation to help and encourage junior golfers in Scotland and he will again lead the European junior team as he continues to inspire the next generation of golfers.

It is with great pride that the Royal PGA of Belgium announces that the association has received the predicate Royal.

This special distinction recognises our long-standing and meaningful contribution to Belgian golf, and makes Belgium the first PGA worldwide to receive such an award.

The predicate Royal, granted by His Majesty the King, is one of the highest honours a Belgian company or organisation can receive. It is only awarded to companies and institutions that are at the forefront of their field and have a history of at least 50 years.

“This award is a tribute to the commitment, dedication and innovation of all our employees and partners,” said managing director Bernard De Bruyckere [pictured, right, alongside [L to R] Tom Blanckaert, Carine Van Cauter, Vincent Vroninks]. “Receiving the Royal designation underlines our continued ambition to pursue quality and excellence in everything we do. It is a milestone in our history and a motivation to continue with even more passion and dedication.”

The association was statutorily established in 1988 but its first national championship was held in 1922. The Royal Palace thought it saw enough evidence in a number of documents from 1937 to consider this date recognised. Since then, the association has played a leading role in the world of golf, both nationally and internationally.

With a strong focus on professionalism, fair play, integrity and knowledge, the association has achieved countless milestones and established itself as a trusted and respected name in the industry. The official presentation of the predicate took place on 18 June at a festive ceremony, which was also attended by representatives of the city of Ghent and the Governor of the province of East Flanders.

“We are deeply honoured by this recognition and see it as a confirmation of our efforts and achievements. The Royal designation motivates us to continue providing outstanding services, and to further expand our contribution to golf,” added Chairman, Tom Blanckaert.

Victorious 2014 Captain to work with Luke Donald
Irishman will also continue to be part of the Ryder Cup Advisory Committee

Luke Donald has named Paul McGinley as Strategic Adviser to the 2025 European Ryder Cup Team, adding further vast experience behind the scenes to Europe’s quest to retain the trophy at Bethpage Black in New York next September.

Having already named Thomas Bjørn and Edoardo Molinari – who were alongside him at Marco Simone last year – as Vice Captains once again, the addition of McGinley by Captain Donald adds considerable additional know-how and understanding of the Ryder Cup arena to Team Europe’s build-up and preparation.

The Irishman led Europe to victory in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland, having previously featured on three winning teams as a player, and twice more as a Vice Captain.

In addition, since 2019, the 57 year old Dubliner has also been part of the Ryder Cup Advisory Committee which was set up to help maximise the commercial impact of the contest. He will continue in that role, alongside Chair Sir Damon Buffini, Ian Ritchie and Richard Scudamore.

McGinley said: “It is clear we have built a very strong template for winning at home in Ryder Cups but I see my job as helping Luke, his Vice Captains and his backroom team to look at an away match differently to how we’ve looked at it before.

“I would say that the first important step we made in that regard was to reappoint Luke as Captain. He has the most recent experience of anyone in that role and we should look to utilise that experience and harness his knowledge.

“In addition to advising strategically on an away match, I see this role as two-fold for me. Firstly, I will be very much in the background as an independent sounding board for Luke and his Vice Captains, someone they can confide in, converse with and bounce ideas off.

“Secondly, I will provide an important link between Luke and the Advisory Committee so that not only are they aware of team plans, but also to ensure we are all pulling in the same direction.”

McGinley is perfectly placed to advise on the particular challenge of winning a Ryder Cup away from home having done precisely that on two occasions; firstly as a player in 2004 at Oakland Hills under Bernhard Langer, and secondly as a Vice Captain to José María Olazábal at Medinah in 2012.

In both those matches the link to current Captain Donald was present; partnering the Englishman in his very first Ryder Cup match on the Friday morning in 2004, and having him as one of the players assigned to mentor as Vice Captain in 2012, the match where Donald led Europe’s Sunday singles order to the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history.

Donald said: “Paul is someone whose thoughts and opinions on golf I have always respected. We have talked a lot over the past few years and those conversations are always stimulating and challenging. He is someone that you have to listen to when talk turns to the Ryder Cup. Naturally, I am delighted to have him formally involved with the 2025 team.

“I might not have been at Gleneagles in 2014 but I know what an amazing job Paul did. He redefined a lot of the Ryder Cup Captain’s role with his meticulous approach to it, and I feel every Captain since 2014 has benefited in some way from what he achieved at Gleneagles.

“I personally got a lot of sound guidance from Paul in the build up to Rome which was a massive help to me. Myself and Paul, as well as my two Vice Captains, Edoardo and Thomas, all have similar beliefs as to what it means to represent Team Europe and what we expect from our players.”

Donald led Europe to a 16½ – 11½ victory against the United States at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy, last year. He was reappointed to the role in November, becoming Europe’s first repeat Captain since Bernard Gallacher led Team Europe in three consecutive Ryder Cups in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

The former World Number One is now aiming to become only the second Captain to lead Europe to victories both home and away, following Tony Jacklin who achieved the double at Muirfield Village in Ohio in 1987, retaining the Ryder Cup following his team’s victory two years previously at The Belfry, in England, in 1985.

Initiative creates new opportunities for world’s best amateur players

Pathways created to the DP World Tour and eight global Tours

The DP World Tour, The R&A and the PGA TOUR have today launched the Global Amateur Pathway – powered by the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®) – to help the very best male amateur players take the next step in their careers.

The landmark initiative creates a pathway for non-collegiate amateur players on to the DP World Tour and partner Tours around the world. The Global Amateur Pathway will complement PGA TOUR University – which awards membership on PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tours to the top Division-I college golfers at the end of the NCAA Championship – to ensure opportunities are available for elite players across the amateur ranks.

Under the Global Amateur Pathway, the best eligible non-collegiate male amateur within the top 20 of the WAGR® will receive a DP World Tour card for the following season. WAGR® comprises a women’s ranking and a men’s ranking for elite amateur players and is offered by The R&A and the USGA as a global service to golf. Players competing in Global Amateur Pathway eligible championships earn points equivalent to the number of points awarded by WAGR®.

The Global Amateur Pathway strengthens, and demonstrates the benefits of, the Strategic Alliances forged by the DP World Tour to provide global player pathways. As such, further exemptions will be available on the European Challenge Tour – part of the European Tour Group – while the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR are working with seven further partner Tours, within their respective governance process and timelines, to finalise their participation. The first Global Amateur Pathway Ranking Period will conclude on 13 October 2024 and the first exemptions will be awarded for the 2025 season.

Several current PGA TOUR and DP World Tour members would have benefited if the Global Amateur Pathway had previously existed. Players such as Tommy Fleetwood (Southport, England), Hideki Matsuyama (Ehime, Japan) and Min Woo Lee (Perth, Australia) were accomplished amateurs who relied on sponsor exemptions to begin their professional careers. Fleetwood was runner-up at the 2008 Amateur Championship and represented GB&I at the 2009 Walker Cup; Matsuyama was a two-time winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and became the first Japanese male to rise to No. 1 in WAGR®; and Lee made two appearances in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, including a tied third finish in 2017, and represented Australia at the 2018 World Amateur Team Championship, where he finished T6.

The Global Amateur Pathway would have provided these players with professional tour membership and a clear path forward as they worked toward careers on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour.

Guy Kinnings, DP World Tour Chief Executive, said, “We are delighted to offer the very best amateur players new opportunities through the Global Amateur Pathway, alongside our partners at The R&A and PGA TOUR.

“This initiative is the perfect example of the benefits that come from the Strategic Alliances and partnerships that we have forged across the game of golf. The very best amateur players now have similar opportunities to their professional counterparts, with clear pathways across the globe to ultimately compete at the pinnacle of the game.

“This complements the opportunities for collegiate players via PGA TOUR University, and there is no better example of the benefits of that programme than young European Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg, who has grasped every opportunity that has come his way with both hands.

“Our thanks go to The R&A and PGA TOUR, and to each of the Tours who are coming together to make this dream a reality for the next generation of amateur players.”

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “We are delighted to work in partnership with the DP World Tour and the PGA TOUR to launch the Global Amateur Pathway.

“We care deeply about amateur golf and developing pathways for the most talented players from different regions of the world is one of our fundamental priorities. It is key to the sustainable future of the sport.

“We continue to create opportunities for elite amateurs to compete at the highest level through our leading amateur championships and the Global Amateur Pathway provides the players with a route to the professional ranks. We look forward to watching them progress in their careers and will now explore the opportunities to introduce a similar pathway in the women’s game.”

“We are thrilled to partner with the DP World Tour and The R&A to take another step forward in strengthening the pathway for amateur athletes as they transition to professional golf,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Building on the success of PGA TOUR University over the last four years, the Global Amateur Pathway will ensure the best young players from around the world can earn their way onto golf’s biggest stages more efficiently than ever before.”

To be eligible for the Global Amateur Pathway Ranking, amateur golfers must meet the following criteria:

Not be a current NCAA Division-I player.

Be at least 20 years of age by the end of the calendar year of the relevant Ranking Period.

Be within the top 200 WAGR®.

Players who are outside the top 200 WAGR® by the end of the Registration Period who then move into the top 100 WAGR® at any time prior to the conclusion of the Late Registration Period in the relevant season.

The Global Amateur Pathway Ranking – based on the WAGR® – will be published every week on the Global Amateur Pathway page following the registration period, with qualification ending on 13 October 2024. The Ranking is designed to identify and rank elite male amateur players (excluding NCAA Division-I collegiate players) competing in eligible tournaments based on their average performance in those tournaments.

The GolfSixes League international expansion gained momentum over the past 12 months with 20 countries now running the programme designed to encourage young people into playing, enjoying and remaining in the sport.

Six nations joined Great Britain & Ireland in 2022 and another eight nations started GolfSixes League pilots in 2023. With Iceland and the United Arab Emirates joining in 2024, a total of 20 countries now offer GolfSixes League to young people.

GolfSixes League is a development project designed to enable participants who are new to golf to learn, play and progress through short-form team golf. It is a collaborative initiative driven by The R&A, Ryder Cup European Development Trust [RCEDT], Confederation of Professional Golf [CPG], Ladies European Tour [LET], DP World Tour and national partners. The expansion of GolfSixes League is backed by the Golf Foundation, the charity that created and developed the initiative across GB&I.

With innovation as a guiding light for GolfSixes League, the first International Indoor GolfSixes League Championship was launched in the winter of 2023/24. Played on simulators, teams from six nations participated, with Dutch team Sluispolder winning ahead of the Swiss team from Links Leuk Golfresort and the Czech team from Golf Club Horehledy. Following this successful launch, the Icelandic Golf Union is piloting indoor leagues this year, also played on simulators, to attract and engage young golfers during their long off-season.

The Golf Foundation recently announced that in GB&I there will be more than 8,000 players from over 600 clubs participating in GolfSixes League. In other nations, where activity is still in the development phase, a further 270 clubs and over 4,000 players will participate in 2024.

Adding further excitement for participants, GolfSixes League activities will be held at a number of DP World Tour and LET events during the season.

GolfSixes League continues to deliver positive results with a 2023 survey of participants outside of GB&I showing that 39% of participants are girls and over half of the participants who were not already members of a golf club, became members during the year.

Phil Anderton, Chief Development Officer at The R&A said, “We are delighted to see GolfSixes League expanding across the globe, this growth is a testament to the fast-paced format which makes golf accessible for players and their parents. It is more important than ever to provide young people with healthy leisure time options, so we are entirely supportive of initiatives like the GolfSixes League which introduces golf in a fun and fast environment that inspires lifelong enjoyment of the sport.”

Ian Randell, Chief Executive of CPG, the project manager of the international roll-out of GolfSixes League and sole member of the Ryder Cup European Development Trust, said: “The growth of this exciting initiative shows the value of, and enjoyment gained from, short-form team golf, especially for juniors and beginners. The rapid expansion is testament to what can be achieved when leading international bodies truly collaborate and work together to provide opportunities to national organisations, golf facilities and coaches across the globe. Together with the other partners, we look forward to continuing to grow participation and adding further new nations over the coming years.”

Maria Grandinetti-Milton, Head of Sustainability at the DP World Tour, added: “GolfSixes was born as a shorter tournament format on our 2017 season schedule that could engage new audiences with the game. Since then, it has taken on a life of its own and spread across the globe as an ideal way to get young people into golf. It has been fantastic to witness the collaboration between so many of golf’s key bodies and local grass-roots organisations to roll-out this expansion and we look forward to seeing this momentum continue in the years ahead.”
