Lilly took over once the tournament arrived at the final round venue, the famous par-3 Turtle Hill Golf Club at the Fairmont Southampton, on Wednesday. He fired a course record, bogey-free seven-under-par 47, and maintained his lead as he cruised to victory on Thursday over professionals from around the world.

“I just went out and tried to score as low as possible and got off to a nice start and just kept it going,” says, Lilly. “We had a bit of rain and a couple of really heavy downpours. There was also a little bit of breeze but nothing major. It was just one of those good days.”

In the team competition Professional, Cary Sciorra, and amateurs Tom Tracy, Tom Corr and John Coleman of Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., won the low gross division. In the low net division, Bermudians Dwayne Pearman (P), Michael Dunkley, Christopher Morris and Craig Christensen of Turtle Hill prevailed earning the gold medal.

BERMUDA 3s presented by Goslings, is the creation of two golf industry veterans, Joe Steranka, former CEO of the PGA of America, and Honda Classic Executive Director, Ken Kennerly. Sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and Goslings Rum, PGA Professionals from the U.S., Great Britain & Ireland, Bermuda and Spain competed individually for $52,000 in professional money.

“We could not have asked for a better start to this new world pro-am,” says Steranka. “From Mid Ocean, Port Royal, Turtle Hill and the Fairmont Southampton all being amazing hosts, to the quality of play from our participants, it has truly been a world-class event.”

Bermuda has been a popular international golf destination since hosting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 2007-’14 at Mid Ocean and Port Royal. The Fairmont Southampton was the host hotel for those competing and home to championship venue, Turtle Hill Golf Club.

“This amazing country has long been an international meeting place for sports,” says co-founder Kennerly. “to have champions in the Professional, Team Gross and Team Net divisions from three different countries is what we dreamed of when we created this event.”

Simon Lilly carded a seven-under par 47 in Round 3 of the Bermuda3s World Team Championship presented by Goslings to smash the existing course record by three shots and enter the final round of the tournament with an astonishing 12 -shot lead over USA’s Cary Sciorra who stands in second place.

After battling the wind for 36 holes on the Championship Courses of Mid Ocean Golf Club and Port Royal Golf Club, the Briton [pictured, second centre-left] entered Round 03 of the tournament on the 18-hole par-three course Turtle Hill with a one shot lead.

It was here that he demonstrated his full potential and used his Par-3 Championship experience to his advantage. His seven-under par round and stretched his lead to 12 shots over the rest of the field, entering the last round comfortably ahead and positioning himself within reach of first place’s check for $11,000.

“It was a nice day, I started off nicely and just made 7 birdies and no bogeys,” said Lilly. “We have the British par-3 Championship in the UK, which I have played for four seasons, and it’s just such a great format. The key shot of the days was holing the first putt form about 20 feet which put me off to a good start.”

In the team category, team ‘Trump International Golf Club’, who were off to a great start and held the lead for the first two rounds, succumbed to the experience and course knowledge of the local “Turtle Hill Golf Club” team, who with a nett 93 launched themselves to the highest spot on the leaderboard at 32 under par, three shots clear of their closest contestants. The team is lead by Professional, Dwayne Pearman, along with amateurs Michael Dunkley, Christopher Morris and Craig Christensen.

As the only player to shoot Par in Round 2 of the Tournament, British Professional Lilly enters Round 3 with a total score of 2-over par, and 1 stroke ahead of USA’s Cary Sciorra, heading into the final two rounds on the famed 18-hole Par 3 Turtle Hill Golf Course.

“I’m really excited to be here, I’ve never been here before and it’s a fabulous venue. Yesterday I found it very tough in the wind and on grainy greens which I’m not really used to, whilst today the course elevation with the strong wind made it so much harder” said Lilly after his round.

“We play a British Par-3 Championship and that’s one of the biggest events in the UK for the pros and it’s a great event. Par 3 golf is different and it’s fun, it brings a lot more people together and makes it more playable for everybody”.

In the Team Category, team “Trump International Golf Club” led by Professional John Nieporte, along with amateurs Keith Frankel, Pete Mazzola and Andrew Graves, maintain their lead with a total score of 19 under par and two shots clear of team “Turtle Hill Golf Club” led by Professional Dwayne Pearman, along with amateurs Michael Dunkley, Christopher Morris and Craig Christensen who, however, enter Round 3 and 4 of the tournament on home soil at Turtle Hill Golf Course.

From 07 to 10 February, the renowned Spanish club will host the Costa Daurada International Pro-Am with teams of one Professional and three amateurs competing over three rounds, together with a guaranteed prize fund of €20,000 for Professionals.

Directly after, from 11 to 14 February, the Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Championship Presented by Costa Daurada will see up to 120 pairs of PGA Professionals battle it out across the club’s Hills and Lakes courses in what has become one of the largest Professional tournaments in the world.

Professionals are invited to enter both events* that have joined forces for the third year in a row as the Costa Daurada Golf Festival, celebrating the ongoing successful partnership that Lumine, the Confederation of Professional Golf and the local tourism agencies of the Costa Daurada have forged.

“We are delighted to return to Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community for the third edition Costa Daurada Golf Festival”, said Confederation of Professional Golf Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

“The Fourball Championship is a real jewel in the crown of PGA Professional tournaments, first played in 2002 and attracting over 200 players competing for the title – one of the largest Professional fields in the world.

“The Costa Daurada Golf Festival is a fantastic way for players from all over Europe to start their season in a competitive but friendly atmosphere, and on some of the best golf courses that Spain has to offer.”

General Manager of Lumine, Calle Carlsson, commented: “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Confederation of Professional Golf and welcoming the return of these two incredibly exciting events, which make up our Festival of Golf. Together with the support of the Costa Daurada Tourist Board and their partners, we are sure the events will again be of a fantastic standard and provide a great experience for our professional and amateur guests alike.”

The PGA of Spain’s Emilio Cuartero captured his first Professional Win at the 2018 edition of the Costa Daurada International Pro-Am on what is his home course, with a consistent play in tough conditions allowing him to finish two shots ahead of the rest of the field.

Later in the week, the Spanish dominance continued in the 2018 Fourball Championship Presented by costa Daurada where PGA of Spain Professionals, Xavier Puig Giner & Adria Arnaus Antunex, produced a wire-to-wire finish to win the Championship with an outstanding -28 total (186) to take home the €6,000 first prize.

A global consensus amongst leaders in public health, public policy and sport backs golf in the race to tackle physical inactivity and the prevention of a range of non-communicable disease (NCD) including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer of the breast and colon.

Evidence linking golf and health, commissioned by the World Golf Foundation and supported by The R&A, was presented this week in London at the 7th Congress of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH). The biennial scientific meeting is widely regarded as the world’s flagship physical activity and public health event attended by more than 1,000 delegates from 60 countries.

Recognition that playing golf has significant physical health and wellness benefits and can provide moderate intensity physical activity to persons of all ages, comes just months after the World Health Organization (WHO) published its Global Action Plan for Physical Activity. The Global Action Plan targets one in four adults, and four out of five adolescents (11-17 years) who are insufficiently active and charts how countries can reduce physical inactivity in adults and adolescents by 15% through 2030.

The scientific consensus for golf is evidenced in research led by the University of Edinburgh and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Findings reveal that playing golf is associated with a range of physical and mental health benefits, and further collaborative efforts to improve access for the sport are needed.

New studies are underway to discover if playing golf improves strength and balance, contributing to a key public health goal of fall prevention in healthy aging and into conditions such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

Marking the close of the ISPAH Congress, public health practitioners, policymakers and golf industry leaders were hosted at a satellite event in the Palace of Westminster by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf.

Steve Brine MP, UK Minister for Public Health and Primary Care said, “Governments need active partners in sport to help reduce the levels of physical inactivity that are evident in society today and it gratifying to see that golf is using its global presence to make a difference.

“Golf has various health benefits for people of all ages and I look forward to working with golf, other sports and stakeholders to help get more people, more active, more often.”

Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “Golf is working hard to encourage more people into the sport who will realise its many health benefits. With 60 million golfers spanning six continents, golf has found common purpose in working with public health practitioners and policymakers to optimise the health benefits of playing the sport.

“We recognise the importance of the WHO Global Action Plan for Physical Activity and we will work with our affiliates and partners around the world to help improve health and well-being through golf”.

Professor Fiona Bull, WHO Programme Manager, Non-Communicable Disease Prevention said, “NCD is responsible for nearly three quarters of all premature deaths globally, including 15 million deaths per year in people aged 30 to 70 years.

“The new WHO global action plan and the implementation toolkit ‘ACTIVE’ aims to help all countries improve the environments and the opportunities for all people to be more active. Golf is a popular sport for men and women and it is great to see golf’s global leadership recognising health priorities and identifying ways golf can be more accessible to more people. I took up golf in my 30’s but thought it was a very technical, expensive and elitist sport.

“Thankfully a 6 week ‘come and try course’ showed me how easy it was to enjoy golf as a beginner and how active playing 9 holes can be!” I am looking forward to seeing how golf can attract many more girls and women to enjoy the sport and be more active and healthy”.

Annika Sorenstam, Major Champion and a global ambassador for golf and health said, “As the recent international consensus statement highlighted, golf is great for your health for people of all ages – playing the sport and even spectating. Given the health benefits, we must work together to make golf more accessible if we are to achieve our sport’s full potential.”

The 2018 International Consensus Statement on Golf and Healthto guide action by people, policymakers and the golf industry was published last month in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

A further Golf and Health Scientific Meeting will be held at Mytime Active, High Elms Golf Course, Bromley on Thursday 18 October 2018, a club promoting healthy lifestyles. Researchers from Asia, Australia, Europe and the USA will discuss their respective projects and the future direction of research on golf and health.

The PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes carded a closing 62 to win the 2018 Beko Classic Pro-Am at Carya Golf Club in Turkey, with a final score of 18-under par (198).

Round three started with 11 players within two shots of the lead, but it was Schultes who took the 2018 MVK Trophy and the first prize of $10,000 after an incredible 10-under final round.

“It was a pretty special day, I only really got out of position once,” said Schultes. “I had lots of short birdie putts, which I managed to convert. You always look at fields at events like this, and when you’ve got a major winner in Michael Campbell, and a Ryder Cup Captain who has holed the winning putt at a Ryder Cup in Paul McGinley, you look at that and it’s definitely a feather in the cap.

“My wife and I had our first child at the beginning of the year so I spent some more time at home practicing rather than playing, and its nice that the swing changes I decided to make are slowly shoring up. This winter I have some more Pro-Ams and Confederation of Professional Golf events, and then next year I’ll probably go and play in China and Asia again.”

Three shots back was runner-up, Jesper Kennegard (PGA of Sweden), who posted a fantastic final round eight-under 64, for his 15-under total (201).

In tied third place was PGA of GB&I’s Andrew Marshall and 2017 Beko Classic Winner, David Lynn, closing their tournaments at 14-under par (202), whilst tied fifth went to the PGA of Spain’s Alvaro Salto and local Turkish Professional, Koray Varli, each finishing on 11-under par (205).

The Team Pro-Am event was won by Team Flo Ayakkabi, made up of amateurs Mehmet Ziylan, Baha Telli and Mehmet Kazan. The Pro-Am format saw the teams change Professional in each round, and having been aided by Peter Gustafsson, Andrew Marshall, and in Round 03, Raymond Russell, Flo Ayakkabi ended with an astonishing 285 points (-69).

Team Opet 3 climbed two places up the leaderboard into second place with 271 points (-55), and Team Beko Turkey climbed three places to finish third at 267 points (-51).

Team Flo Ayakkabi, led by Andrew Marshall, built on yesterday’s strong start. Along with Marshall, amateurs Mehmet Ziylan, Baha Telli and Mehmet Kazan, scored 97 points taking them to the top of the leaderboard.

The PGA of Spain’s Alvaro Salto took the lead after the first round of the 2018 Beko Classic Pro-Am, with an opening five under-par (67) at Carya Golf Club in Turkey.

The Spaniard quickly found himself one-over par through six holes, but then birdied six of his last 12 holes snatching the lead from defending champion, David Lynn, who trails by a single shot alongside Andrew Marshall, Haydn McCullen, Luca Cianchetti and the PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes, at four-under par (68).

“My front nine wasn’t very good but I finished great,” said Salto. “I finished with four consecutive birdies so I’m really happy with that.

“I think the Pro-Am format will help me tomorrow as I’ll be focusing on my game rather than on the other professionals…my team also did great and I think they made me play better.”

Only two shots off the lead at three-under par is the 2005 US Open Champion, Michael Campbell, who was able to card a three-under par 69 to put him in contention having not played the golf course before.

2014 winning Ryder Cup Captain, Paul McGinley, also made a steady start in his first Professional event in Turkey closing his round at two-under par (70).

Team Golferz 22, led by Alvaro Salto, took the lead in the Team category. Amateurs Fahri Ersin, Idil Mimarogluand Mehmet Saracoglu, together with Salto, scored 94 points (-22) to take the lead before moving to Round 02.

Only three points behind are Opet 2, led in Round 01 by England’s Andrew Marshall, with amateurs, Oya Dagli, Caner Tuna and Nurten Ozturk, with 91 points (-19) along with team Flo Ayakkabi, led by Peter Gustafsson(PGA of Spain) and Mehmet Ziylan, Baha Telliand Mehmet Kazan.

The Ryder Cup legend partners with Greece’s premier destination to create two new 18-hole courses overlooking historic shoreline

Costa Navarino one of the world’s premier golf destinations, has today announced a partnership with two-time Masters champion and Ryder Cup legend, José María Olazábal, to design two new courses in the region of Messinia, Greece.

The two new 18-hole courses at Navarino Hills will overlook The Bay Course and the historic Bay of Navarino, set high above the coastline offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Ionian Sea.

Stretching over 150 hectares of garrigue landscape typical in the region famed for its natural beauty, the Navarino Hills property will allow two courses of the highest international standards that will complement and adequately expand the renowned quality golf offer at Costa Navarino.

Work on Olazábal’s signature design, his 20th course construction, has just begun and is expected to open for play by 2021.

Costa Navarino, voted “European Golf Resort of the Year” for 2017 by IAGTO, is already home to one of the world’s premier golf destinations with two multi-award-winning courses, The Dunes Course and The Bay Course, designed by Bernhard Langer and Robert Trent Jones II, respectively.

The Navarino Hills development will bring the total number of signature golf courses at Costa Navarino to four, all within a 13km distance and under the same management, establishing it as one of the few upscale golf destinations around the world which combine such characteristics. The development further enhances the destination, which due to its ideal climate, lush seaside landscape and direct access, is a unique place to visit throughout the year.

Stephanos Theodorides, Vice-President & Managing Director of TEMES – Developers of Costa Navarino, believes partnering with Olazábal, who has placed a sustainable development strategy at the heart of the design, will enhance Costa Navarino’s position as one of the world’s most distinctive environmentally-friendly golf destinations.

He said: “This announcement represents a milestone moment for Costa Navarino and the region. We are excited to introduce our plans for Costa Navarino’s evolution. Our vision for the destination development always included Navarino Hills as an instrumental component, based on the principles of an eco-retreat. José María Olazábal stands for passion, integrity, and quality. These are principles very close to our hearts and made the decision an easy one to partner with him for this special project.”

José María Olazábal said: “What TEMES has created in Costa Navarino is extraordinary and for us to have a chance to play our part in the destination’s legacy fills us with immense pride. The Navarino Hills property is spectacular and the views are simply breath-taking, particularly on the northern edge where you will find it almost impossible to take your eyes off the striking Bay of Navarino, famous for its naval battle history.

“The rest of the site will also quickly win the hearts of golfers with extended views over rolling hills. For us, it is a privilege to have the chance to design not just one but two golf courses and we will do everything to do this incredible land justice and deliver a golfing experience you will want to return to over and over.”

Costa Navarino already features two luxury hotels, The Westin Resort Costa Navarino and The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort; private residences; five-star services and facilities; and a range of authentic experiences, with an infrastructure set to grow even further through the addition of new hotels, real estate and further sports and leisure facilities.

Two PGA of France Professionals, Rémy Beduand Nicholas Wrona, and three PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professionals, Peter Ball, Alan Bradshaw, and Jamie Cundy, provided hundreds of 10 minute lessons across the whole Ryder Cup week in the Académie PGA’ unit created together with Provision Events.

“I am really proud, not only for me but for all the golfers in France, to welcome the Ryder Cup into our country,” said Bedu. “This week we have made ‘flash’ lessons for so many people, regardless of what level of golf they are at. The PGA is a sort of family as a group of all the teachers and I am excited to be a part of that.”

“This is the first Ryder Cup that I’ve done and there is such a great atmosphere,” added Cundy. “We have had people in from Europe and America but also all over the world, coming to Paris and then to enjoy the Ryder Cup so it’s fantastic.
