Having led after the first round, Mejow found himself two shots behind PGA of Israel Professional, Asaf Cohen, at the beginning of the final round.

After 18 holes that difference had been cancelled out after Mejow’s one-under par 70 and Cohen’s one-over 72 on The Dunes Course for a seven-under par total (205). This led to a playoff that was ultimately won by Mejow with a birdie at the first time of asking on the par-five 18th hole.

“I am so happy and proud because I put in a lot of work in the winter,” said Mejow. “It was a long time ago when I won my last tournament, so I’m really happy to begin the season like this. I was happy to get into the playoff because I was second at the start of the day, and I was actually really confident that I could win it. I will try to be back next year because Costa Navarino is one of the most beautiful places I know.”

Despite losing out on the playoff, Cohen was hugely positive about his Messinia Pro-Am experience: “I can say I am very happy – I played good golf all week, the conditions of course were great, and you know sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Philipp played amazing…he’s a good guy and I am very happy for him.”

Third place was shared between the PGA of Greece’s Christos Nikopoulos and the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Stuart Boyle. Despite moving back in the scoring with a three-over 74, Nikopoulos secured his third place position at two-under par (210), whilst Boyle kept things steady with a level par 71 to advance one position up the leaderboard.

The 36-hole Team Pro-Am event was won by the Team of PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional, Stuart Boyle, and amateurs Achilles Constantakopoulos, Georgios Kyvernitis, and Harris Papadopoulos.

A second round 85 points (-13) from the Team, combined with their first round outstanding total of 94 points, gave a commanding total of 179 points (-35).

Two teams tied for second place, each totalling 164 points (-20) – Gordon Brand Jr (PGA of GB&I) joined by singers Keith Duffy & Brian McFadden from BoyZone and Westlife respectively, along with Scottish Rugby legend, Thom Evans; and Asaf Cohen and his amateurs, Yehuda Levi, Yechzkel Mageh, Ycav Shehhav.

The final round Team Pro-Am on The Dunes Course was won by Team Reiter of Gunther Ausserdorfer, Franz Pichler, and Gottfried Traintinger, and their Professional, Bernhard Reiter (PGA of Austria) with 90 points (-18). Over on The Bay Course it was the PGA of Greece’s Evgenios Papadopoulos and amateurs Stamatios Chourdakis, Frank Montaque and Ulf Skovliwho took the honours with 80 points (-8).

Starting the day in second position, Cohen began in steady fashion with five regulation pars followed by a bogey on the fifth to go out in 37.
“I did not start out well as I was one over after nine,” said Cohen. “But I started to hit the ball better, made some putts…and I am good with the score. For me it’s been a great tournament so far, playing with great guys, and the condition of the course is so good and I am very happy to be here.”

Overnight leader, Mejow, was not able to capitalise on his early charge, finishing his second round at The Dunes Course at one-over par (72) and two shots from the pace at six-under par (135).

PGA of Greece native, Christos Nikopoulos, continued his steady play, holding third position with a one-under par 69 over The Bay Course at Costa Navarino, for a total of five under (136) for the week.

The two-round Team Pro-Am event was won by the Team of PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional, Stuart Boyle, and his amateurs Achilles Constantakopoulos, Georgios Kyvernitis, and Harris Papadopoulos.

[fb_plugin video href=https://www.facebook.com/PGAsofEurope/videos/1584954364904678/]

“To play seven-under in the first round of the year under these conditions is pretty cool”, said Mejow. “Today my wedge game was pretty good so I hit a few close and didn’t have to hole long putts…it’s the second time I’ve played here and the area is just beautiful and the courses are really nice.”

Sole second place sits with the PGA of Israel’s Asaf Cohen just two shots behind with a round of 66 on The Dunes Course at Costa Navarino that included five birdies and 13 regulation pars.

Third position is shared between Alexis Szappanos (PGA of Germany) and Christos Nikopoulos (PGA of Greece) each a single shot behind second on four under par. Szappanos had more of an up-and-down round over The Bay Course with seven birdies and three bogeys, whilst Nikopoulos kept things a little steadier with five birdies and a single bogey.

In the Team Pro-Am it was defending Team Champions, Team Boyle, led by PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional Stuart Boyle, who made a huge advancement in the first round.

Together with amateurs Achilles Constantakopoulos, Georgios Kyvernitis, and Harris Papadopoulos, Team Boyle made 94 points (-22) for a commanding lead.

Eight points behind are Team Martinez led by the PGA of Italy’s Zeke Martinez, alongside amateurs Juergen Mayer, Timo Schlitz, and Maria Zanchi, with 86 points (-14).

Tied for third in the teams are Team Canonica and Team A. Cohen, both of which made 84 points (-12).

[fb_plugin video href=https://www.facebook.com/PGAsofEurope/videos/1580884218645026/]

“It’s a great pleasure to win, and we’re very happy as it’s the first tournament of the season,” said Puig Giner after his pair’s closing 62. “Playing with Adria was very nice and it was great to learn next to each other and do good things.”

A 63 in the first round and 61 in the second round had given the pair a three shot lead into the final day, and with so many pairs on their tail they knew that aggressive play was required.

“I had an idea what could be the winning score because we were rooming with two past champions,” added Arnaus Antunex. “So we kept a total in front of us and tried to make as many birdies as we could.”

An eagle and three birdies on the outward nine followed by four birdies on the way in lead to a nine-under par 62 and their -28 total.

Four shots back on -24 (190) in second place were Carlos del Moral Barilari & Jordi Garcia del Moral (PGA of Spain) whose second 63 of the Championship was not quite enough to catch the lead of the eventual winners.

“We played good golf this week to finish second,” said Garcia del Moral. “It was a bit of pity because we played well, but Adria and Xavi played awesome so we are pretty happy.”

Third place fell to another PGA of Spain pair, Liam Murray & Jordan Gibb. This pair had started their Championship with a strong 65 on the Lakes Course but were not able to make up the ground required, despite a closing 64 on the Lakes Course.

“The Fourball is a fun event to start the year with,” said Murray. “It’s nice to know you have a partner who lets you wing it a little bit – you’re not sure exactly where it’s going to go because we haven’t played as much, so you can see how you deal with some pressure and how different areas of your game are holding up.”

“Lumine has good players golf courses,” added Gibb. “If you hit the ball well then it’s fair and that’s what you want in a course – to reward good shots.”

After sharing the lead overnight, Puig Giner & Arnaus Antunex moved on to the Hills Course – the more score-able of the two courses at Lumine, shown by just one pair of the top 15 having played the Lakes Course in Round 02. The Spaniards closed their Round 02 account at -19 (124), three shots ahead of the pack.

“Both courses are completely different, and the Hills is the one that allows you to think a little bit more and make different strategies depending on how the first player hits their shot,” said Arnaus Antunex. “Tomorrow we are going to go as low as we can and go for it with every shot…hopefully we can get another great round like we did for the last two days.”

Puig Giner added, “We are very happy and it was an amazing round – we had lots of holes where we both made birdies so there were lots of birdies out there today.”

[fb_plugin video href=https://www.facebook.com/PGAsofEurope/videos/1577060595694055/]

Carlos del Moral Barilari & Jordi Garcia del Moral advanced a place up the leaderboard with a nine-under par 63 for a -16 (127) total, and were joined by another pair of PGA of Spain Professionals, Jordan Gibb & Liam Murray, who played in the same group and matched that 63 for their -15 total and standalone third place.

After the cut of 40 pairs and ties, the scoring is closely packed with the top 15 players within eight shots of par.

The Fourball Championship forms the second half of the Costa Daurada Golf Festival at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Spain, and sees over 200 PGA Professionals compete across 54 betterball holes.

France’s Peracino & Verselin played the par-72 Hills Course carding a one-sided 64 that consisted of seven birdies on the front nine and a single birdie on the back nine.

“We played very well on the front nine with seven birdies, but we didn’t make any bogeys so that’s a good day,” said Verselin. “It’s a very nice course and the greens are in great shape, they are perfect.”

The Spanish pair of Puig Giner & Arnaus Antunex also took 29 shots to complete their front nine on Lumine’s Lakes Course with two more for their eight-under 63.

“We started very well – especially Adria, he started with three birdies in a row on the first three holes,” said Puig Giner. “We continued fighting but with the wind and the fast greens it’s not easy. I think we have a good chance this week, but we have to play well because there are a lot of great players.”

Three pairs are tied for third place, all of which carded seven-under 64s around the Lakes Course – PGA of Spain Professionals Carlos del Moral Barilari & Jordi Garcia del Moral, and PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professionals Phillip Kelly & Andrew Scrimshaw, and Colm Moriarty & Tim Rice.

30 pairs are within four shots of the lead as the Championship enters its second round, after which a cut of the top 40 pairs and ties will determine who makes it through to battle for the Fourball title.

Round 02 begins at 09:00am (GMT+1).

“It’s my fourth year as a Professional but the first time I have won anything…so winning here means a lot as this is where I live and where I practice,” said Cuartero.

“It’s home to me and I know so many people here. I didn’t play overly well and had some damage control holes but I made a lot of birdies over the three days in tough conditions. Having the Pro-Am here at Lumine feels good – to be able to play such a good course and have an amazing week is great.”

Cuartero’s consistent play across the week allowed him to stay ahead of the field by two shots in Round 02 and 03 with a consecutive level pars. Round 03 consisted of three birdies and three bogeys resulting in an overall total of two-over for the event (216).

Tied second position went to a trio of PGA of Sweden Professionals – Jesper Kennegard, Bjorn Pettersson and Joakim Rask. Kennegard had taken a strong lead in Round 01 but a tough second 18 holes brought him back into the pack. A one-over par 72 gave him his four-over, 218 total.

Pettersson was able to go one better, with a closing level par 71, his lowest round of the week, whilst Rask carded the lowest round of the day with a two-under par 69 for his share.

The Team Pro-Am event was won by the PGA of France’s Augustin Dragon and his amateurs, Patrick Ghezali, Sammy Medioni and Ahcene Nouisiri, with a total of 253 points (-37) after a tournament-best 86 points (-14).

Cuartero and his team of Javier Aymat Satue, Luis Angel Perez Gonzalez and Oscar Toribio Garcia, leapfrogged from their starting position of third into second place overall with a closing 84 points (-12) for a total of 241 points (-25), with PGA of France Professional, Eric Colletta and amateurs, Simon Cohen, Pierre Fedrigo, and Michael Paoli, just three points behind in third place on 238 points (-22).

Emilio Cuartero (PGA of Spain) carded a level-par 72 around the Hills Course at Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club in Spain to take a slim lead heading into the final round of the 2018 Costa Daurada International Pro-Am.

Having begun the day six shots behind overnight leader, Jesper Kennegard (PGA of Sweden), Cuartero was able to shoot the lowest score of the day in what was a real test for all the players.

Cuartero was two-over par through his first nine holes, but three birdies in a row on holes 10, 11 and 12 meant that even with a further bogey at 14, he could keep his overnight score of two-over for the tournament (145).

Kennegard was not able to maintain his lead from Round 01, taking 79 (+7) shots to complete his second round, but ending just a single shot back on three-over (146), alongside the PGA of France’s Franck Arcivaux.

The PGA of Sweden’s Bjorn Pettersson remains in tied-fourth position on four over (147) and is joined by the PGA of France’s Frank Vigouroux.

After another strong team performance, Augustin Dragon (PGA of France) and his amateurs, Patrick Ghezali, Sammy Medioni and Ahcene Nouisiri, have kept their position at the top of the Team Pro-Am leaderboard. A second round 82 points (-10) gives them an overall total of 167 points (-23).

Eric Colletta (PGA of France), Simon Cohen, Pierre Fedrigo, and Michael Paoli also maintained their position in second place with a seven-under score of 79 points and a total that sits them just six shots behind the leaders on 161 points (161).

Cuartero’s individual performance and solid play by his amateurs – Javier Aymat Satue, Luis Angel Perez Gonzalez and Oscar Toribio Garcia – saw them rise here places up the leaderboard into third place on 157 points (13).

“It was nice out there – I drove it on the firway a lot and and hit a lot of greens and didn’t really make any mistakes,” said Kennegard. “I teed off at 1pm which was fine weather for me, although the wind picked up…I think this is my best score here at Lumine Lakes so it suits my eye. The game feels pretty good so I’m just going to try to keep going with it.”

Tied in second place are two PGA of France Professionals, Jeremie Lemaitre and Franck Arcivaux, both of whom led at level par for most of the day until Kennegard’s last minute score.

Lemaitre and Arcivaux each had four birdies, but two double bogeys and four bogeys respectively prevented them from moving under par.

A single shot back is the PGA of Sweden’s Bjorn Pettersson (72), followed by Frank Vigouroux (PGA of France) and Emilio Cuartero (PGA of Spain) at two-over par and in tie-fifth position.

The Team Pro-Am event saw Augustin Dragon (PGA of France) and his amateurs Patrick Ghezali, Sammy Medioni and Ahcene Nouisiri, score 85 points (-13) around the Lakes Course, a strong start that sees them lead by three.

Eric Colletta (PGA of France), Simon Cohen, Pierre Fedrigo, and Michael Paoli, sit in second on 82 (-10), whilst individual leader, Kennegard, Robert Becker, Richard Castex and Jean Moran, and GB&I Professional, Peter Finch, and his amateurs, James Carroll, Chris Finch and Billy Hussein, share third place on 81 points (-9).

The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Chris Gane was victorious in the 5th Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club in UAE, after coming out on top after a single hole playoff with defending champion, Alex Wrigley.

Gane began the day one shot behind the overnight leader, Wrigley, but was able to card a 67 for a tie in first place at 11-under par (269). It took just one playing of the 18th hole in the sudden death playoff to reveal a winner, with Gane coming out on top after his birdie trumped Wrigley’s regulation par.

“It’s definitely nice to win in a playoff, and I played really nicely this week,” said Gane. “I was a little disappointed to bogey the 17th which led to the playoff, but regardless it’s a great way to start the year.

“It’s the second time we’ve been here and it’s just a fantastic layout with great greens, and you get looked after really well all week, so that’s why we came back.”

Having been runner-up in 2015 and 2016, and winning in 2017, second place Wrigley was not far behind with his two-under 68 in the final round, and narrowly missed making it two in a row with his playoff birdie putt just glancing by the hole.

Standalone third place went to the PGA of Sweden’s Johanna Gustavsson who played hugely consistent golf through the tournament with three consecutive 68s over the four rounds for a four-under par total (276).

The three-round Team Pro-Am event was won by the PGA of GB&I’s Darren Bragg and his team of Michael Aminzade, Chris Muir and Charlie Sturt with 251 points (-35) having risen two places up the leaderboard in the final round.

Just one point behind was the team of Richard Smith (PGA of GB&I) and his amateurs, Peter Taylor, Adam Share and Michael Arnold with 250 points (-34), and third place went to GB&I’s Gavin Hall and his team of Abzal Zhautikbayev, Alexandr Tsoy and Pyotr Lubyantsev with 249 points (-33).
