PGA of Czech Republic Professional, Filip Mruzek, capped off a stunning performance at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am supported by Abu Dhabi Sports Council, with a four-under par 67, to finish top of the leaderboard and take home the €4,000 first prize.

Mruzek’s final round 67 at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, UAE, made it a hat-trick of sub-par rounds in the 60s, having led each day after a 68 in Round 1 and 66 in Round 2 to total twelve-under par (201) for the tournament.

“I feel awesome, it’s great. It’s been a great tournament – one of the best I’ve played in in my life,” explained Mruzek of his win.

“I had a great team with the three guys here this week, we played really solid golf, the course was awesome. The UAE is perfect every time I come here. I played three good rounds to finish twelve-under and I really enjoyed it – I’m really happy.”

Second place fell to the PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes whose final round six-under 65 – the low round of the tournament – was not quite enough to advance him to the top of the leaderboard. A Round 1 70 and Round 2 67 culminated in a total of eleven-under (202) and a cheque for €3,000.

Great Britain & Ireland PGA Professional, Darren Bragg, performed consistently across the week with sub-par rounds in the 60s but finished two shots adrift of the lead at ten-under par (69, 67, 67 = 203), taking home the third place cheque for €2,050.

The Pro-Am Team Competition was won by Professional Henrik Engdahl (PGA of Sweden) and his team of amateurs Sven Behnsen, Alex van de Craen, and Jannis Kakakis with a total of 271 points (96, 89, 86pts).

Individual Professional winner, Mruzek, was also supported by a good team taking second place in the team event with a three round total of 261 points (85, 82, 94 pts), whilst the teams led by James Ferraby (PGA of Spain – 77, 88, 95pts) and Max Saluda (PGA of Poland – 85, 87, 88pts) tied for third-place with 260 point totals.

The week’s winners were presented with their awards by Nassim Mourani, General Manager of Eastern Motors, an authorized dealer of Mercedes–Benz, and Rashed Al Hosani, Acting and Other Sports Section Head of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, at the official tournament hotel, Hilton Al Ain, in the gala dinner prize presentation.

The Czech PGA Professional started his campaign on the back nine of Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, UAE, in a fairly subdued but consistent manner, making the turn with eight regulation pars and a single bogey. But it was his back-nine that set things alight with a birdie on the course’s first hole and then three more in the closing four holes of his round, to finish three under.

But only one shot behind is PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional, Darren Bragg, whose one over front nine was countered with a three-under back-nine.

In tie-third place are Ian Talyor (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland) and Georg Schultes (PGA of Austria), both of whom had up and down rounds, notably with a one-under second nine for Taylor, and four-hole birdie run for Schultes from holes 13 to 16.

Three players – Andrej Kraljic (PGA of Slovenia), Simon Payne (PGA of Australia), and Mark Reynolds (PGA of Holland) – lie at tie-fifth for the tournament with two rounds remaining.

Are you ready to start the New Year? Here are three critical acts you should do this week to prepare.

The New Year is here and offers the promise of great things to come and there’s always time to get ready for the 2014 adventure ahead.

Here are three actions critical to a promising new beginning.

1. Reflect

Many people will push right into the New Year with no respect or consideration for the last 365 days. No doubt, victories were had, mistakes were made, relationships came and went and, most importantly, lessons were learned. Take time to consciously reflect upon the major incidents of 2013. Ask yourself the following questions:

What did I do to most contribute to my successes?

What did I do to most contribute to my failures?

What would I do differently given the same set of circumstances?

Who were the people worthy of my time and effort?

With whom did I spend time where I received no value?

In what ways did I not measure up to my potential?

What will I most fondly remember about 2013?

For what will I be rightly proud?

2. Repent

Nobody is perfect. Most try their best to be useful, pleasant and to contribute in a positive way. But we are all human beings, and with humanity come failings, flaws, selfishness, greed and discontent. The New Year is a time to recognise our shortcomings and acknowledge our own accountability in the parts of our experience that leave us unsatisfied and unkind to those around us. Ask yourself the following questions and take appropriate action.

What are the areas I need to improve?

Who have I hurt and how can I rectify the situation?

Who and what are truly important and worthy of my dedicated attention in 2014?

3. Renew

Clearing your mind and heart of weight helps give you energy and allows you to focus on the path ahead. This is the time to make commitments you will keep. No empty promises. Be the person you truly wish to be and let this be the year you begin that journey. My own journey has brought great joy and gratification from the many people around me who continue to inspire and amaze me. Go into this New Year with hope and wonder. Ask these questions of the world:

Who will be my inspiration this year?

What new adventures are ahead?

Where are the new lessons to learn?

How will I be able to contribute in a significant manner?

The new visual identity marks the culmination of a complete strategic review and reflects the welcoming, modern approach that the Association now takes into the future.

The new brand and branding was developed by the team at sports-branding agency, Whitestone International, and reflects the outcomes of an 18-month review of strategy, internal and external practices and the standards exemplified by the Association.

The review has resulted in clear strategic focus in refining and optimising the Association’s positioning and the missions that are undertaken to achieve it:

Positioning –

The Confederation of Professional Golf is committed to the advancement of golf, golfers and the golf profession across Europe.

This is achieved through 3 clear Missions:

STANDARDS
Developing, sharing and advancing the playing, education and business standards of PGAs and golf Professionals for the benefit of developing golf and its players

VOICE
Providing a collective voice for the Professional Golfers’ Associations of Europe and promoting interest in the game of golf and its economic, social and environmental benefits

ACTIVATION
Events and activities that develop the game or provide opportunities, including playing opportunities, for our members and their PGA Professionals

“The start to 2014 is a very exciting time for the Association and the launch of our new visual identity is just one of the ways in which the association is moving forward,” said Confederation of Professional Golf Chief Executive, Ian Randell. “We are just a year away from our 25th anniversary and we wanted to make sure that we are setting and exemplifying the highest possible standards for our member PGAs by ensuring our strategy, communications, and all our practices are directed in the best way.

“Standards are now in place for both membership and education with the launch of a new European Education Level System (EELS) being adopted this year; our communications both internal and external are more consistent and engaging through our digital magazine “International Golf Pro News”, social media presences and a new website due for launch in the spring; and our activities in terms golf development, tournaments and educational events are more comprehensive than ever before. We are looking forward to 2014 with excitement and focus.”

Confederation of Professional Golf – New Year, New Focus, New Image for the Confederation of Professional GolfThe branding centres around the new logo that features a new colour palette of black, white and accents of silver, and includes a number of features that create a system that is easy to understand, consistent and uses a structure that can be deployed across multiple media:

The ‘PGAs’ Acronym representing the Association’s collective of member Professional Golfers Associations.
A Descriptor (‘OF EUROPE) communicating the Association’s reach and dedication to the game across Europe.
The Association’s signature ‘Ball and Hole’ symbolising the premise at the heart of the game, as well as its commitment to achieving its goals in the advancement of the profession, the game and the business of golf across Europe.
The ‘Cup Graphic’ or rings further signifies the relationship between the ‘ball and hole’ and provides structure and texture to deliver distinctive and cohesive brand communications.
In the coming months the new branding will be rolled out throughout the Association’s digital and physical communications, along with its Corporate Partners and 36 Member Countries. This utilisation of the new branding ensures its use is consistent and that the Association’s stakeholders all understand the concept and strategy behind the revised positioning, missions and visual identity.

A completely redesigned website will also be introduced that will be in line with the new identity and strategy, and will be optimised for the latest web standards and the multitude of devices that people use to view CPG.com, making for the most engaging and streamlined experience possible.

————————-

Applications will be handled by The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland and application forms will be available in January 2014 by contacting The Confederation of Professional Golf on info@CPG.com. No applications will be accepted prior to that date. PGA Members will be entitled to a free ticket plus one half-price ticket for a guest. There are 2000 tickets available under this scheme for current, full* members of The PGA, The European Tour and Confederation of Professional Golf European Member Country PGAs. Tickets are on a first come first served basis but should the number of applications exceed 2000 for any day, tickets will then be allocated via a ballot. Guests must attend the same day/s as the PGA Member; however, the guest can vary from day to day.

As part of this Member benefit package the PGA Members’ Unit will provide a private area to view the golf on television and purchase food and beverages for the PGA member and guest.

Ryder Cup Europe LLP reserves the right to charge the PGA Member the full ticket price if it is found that tickets have not been used under this concession. Members may be depriving other members of access to the matches by applying for tickets not used.

Credit or debit card details will be taken with the application for tickets to cover the amounts due for half price guest tickets; however, payment will not be processed until June 2014 with physical ticket issue a few weeks prior to the matches. Tickets are non-refundable after payment has been taken. Tickets acquired under this concession include free car park access at a designated location yet to be advised.

There will be no access to the matches as a PGA Member unless a ticket is acquired under this system and ticket holders produce their PGA Membership Card AND a photo ID at the matches. There will be no admittance, or entitlement to a ticket, by just appearing at the matches with a PGA Membership card of a Confederation of Professional Golf member country and/or photo ID.

The ex-PGA Professional’s career has spanned over 40 years within the industry and during his leadership of Golfsmith Europe he supported the Association across a 16-year period, and shared the value of this partnership across the industry. As Poole stated during his acceptance speech, Golfsmith Europe’s UK and Europe-wide accounts grew in number to over 7,000 helping to expand business internationally with PGA Professionals by over 1000%.

Poole received his award at the Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex and once again hosted at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, in Portugal’s Algarve region. The Gala Awards capped off the week long Annual Congress that was supported by Glenmuir and the Associação Turismo do Algarve, and ran alongside the International Team Championship at Onyria Palmares.

“Firstly, I’m truly flattered to receive this award – I’ve been in the golf industry for 48 years…and it’s been a gift,” said Poole. “When I entered the industry it was as an Assistant Golf Professional and being a member of the PGA gave me the opportunity to use the branding to take my career to a whole load of heights that I never thought possible. To receive the award is really a true honour.

“Through my business times with the Confederation of Professional Golf, I didn’t invest money as a sponsor because I just felt it was a good idea, it actually gave me an opportunity to grow my business. It allowed me to not only to grow it in the UK but right across the whole of Europe. I made many friends at conferences and golf days that we had with representatives from all the countries.”

His career began as the PGA Professional at Coombe Hill Golf Club and was followed by a move North to Lindrick Golf Club where he also served on the Executive Board of the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland.

A keen interest in travel lead him down his second career path venturing into the world of golf travel, which included a seven-year spell as the Director of Golf at British Airways, before he took hold of the Golfsmith Europe franchise in late 1996.

The award acknowledges the work of an individual or a specific golfing project that has excelled in developing the game and Burrell was the deserving recipient in recognition of her work with the Irish Ladies Golfing Union and Junior Golf Ireland.

Burrell was nominated by the PGA in Ireland for her work that has spanned many years in a number of areas in the game including grass roots and junior golf, as well as with the special Olympics and as a tutor for training PGA Professionals.

“I am both delighted and honoured to receive the Confederation of Professional Golf President’s Award for Golf Development this evening. As the Irish poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde, said ‘the aim of life is self-development, to realise ones nature perfectly, that’s what each of us is here for,” Burrell said during her acceptance speech at the Rolex supported Gala Awards Dinner hosted at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, in Portugal’s Algarve region.

“I have had the very good fortune to meet many people within the PGA who have encouraged, mentored and provided me with the motivation not just to reflect on my own personal development but also on the development of the game of golf.”

The Gala Awards capped off the week long Annual Congress that was supported by Glenmuir and the Associação Turismo do Algarve, and ran alongside the International Team Championship at Onyria Palmares, and was an opportunity to recognise many individuals from across the sport that have excelled in their respective fields.

Burrell became a PGA Professional in 1995 and not long after began to establish herself as a development coach and in 2000 founded The Eagles Club which has introduced 3000 children across 5 locations and utilises 15 PGA Professional coaches. She has used this knowledge of coaching juniors to create numerous publications, manuals and seminars that help coaches to teach at a grass roots level.

More recently Burrell was listed in the Golf Monthly Top-100 Coaches in Great Britain & Ireland for her work with children and Special Olympics athletes, and after being appointed to the board of Junior Golf Ireland on behalf of the PGA in 2011, was elected Chairman in 2013.

Based at John O’Gaunt Golf Club since 2001, Scarbrow (pictured right) has amassed a long list of pupils that have been successful throughout the amateur and professional games in his indoor teaching facility, including LET player and Solheim cup rookie, Charlie Hull, and formerly to Ryder Cup and European Tour star, Ian Poulter.

His successes with elite players as well as with junior programmes has cemented a reputation that makes him a worthy recipient of the highest coaching accolade that is given by the Association in the name of one of the greatest coaches to have ever worked in the game.

“Obviously a massive thank you for this award, it’s just unbelievable to be recognised as a coach for just something I love doing. I love to get people to play better golf and I just feel so proud to win this,” said Scarbrow during his acceptance speech at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner that caps off the Annual Congress at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos and supported by Rolex, Glenmuir and the Associação Turismo do Algarve. “I’d like to thank the PGA for all the training and further education they’ve given us, they make us strive to achieve more and I’m never more proud than when I say I’m a PGA member.

“My father actually gave me the ‘John Jacobs Practical Golf Book’ and said to me ‘this is like a bible, read this and you won’t go far wrong’ – to think that my name is mentioned in the same breathe as the great man is something I know my father would be truly proud of.”

Scarbrow qualified as a PGA Professional in 1984 and after a successful playing career decided to become a club professional in 1990 and quickly became Head Professional at Aylesbury Vale Golf Club, UK. He then moved to Leighton Buzzard Golf Club in 1995, which coincided with his appointment as Captain of the PGA’s East Region having served on the Education Committee since 1991.

From 1998 to 2001 he developed a coaching programme for local schools in Leighton Buzzard and was then the recipient of a service to sport award from Leighton Buzzard Council, and since 2008 has run “Get Back Into Golf” for Team Bedfordshire and Luton.

Spells as a commentator for Sky Sports and numerous appearances in golf publications further exemplify his wide-ranging knowledge and experience that has seen him voted into top listings of coaches in Great Britain & Ireland multiple times across his career.

He was presented with the award at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner that caps off the Annual Congress at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos and supported by Rolex, Glenmuir and the Associação Turismo do Algarve.

“I’m very grateful to receive the 5-Star Professional Award from the Confederation of Professional Golf,” explained Tillmanns during his acceptance speech. “Of course as all of you know no successful professional career can be made possible without having a strong anchor on board, and I would like to thank my wife for helping me keep my bearings. The influence and guidance from experienced professionals, as well as the input from successful entrepreneurs, was also very important to my learning process.”

TIllmanns has filled his career with examples of the highest level of standards and practice in his work that has included elements of coaching, business management, leadership and exceptional service in the administration of the game. Most recently he continues to teach whilst running a shop and driving range, and now operates a golf consultancy company.

One of his recent and most successful projects as a Managing Partner was with the development of a 45-hole golf course in Cologne. For the past seven years, along with a national investor, Tillmans has pieced together the conceptualisation, planning, organisation and building of the parkland and links courses that have received “Best New Golf Course in Germany” and ecological-based awards. The club’s academy was licensed as the first premium PGA Golf School in Germany, and sold approximately 1,400 memberships within the first year of operation.

Tillmanns’ career began when he joined the PGA of Germany as a trainee in 1989 and was fully qualified by 1993. He then quickly rose through the ranks and after being voted for President of his PGA section he became part of the board of the PGA of Germany in 1998 and also headed up the national Education Committee. Then, only two years later, he became Vice-President of the PGA of Germany.

Firm Poised to Strengthen Leadership in Golf, Expand into Broader Sports, Lifestyle Categories

(VIENNA, VA) – Former PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka has joined Buffalo Communications (Buffalo) as Chief Global Strategist to further expand the firm’s leadership position in golf and springboard growth in the broader sports and lifestyle categories worldwide.

Steranka will help develop Buffalo’s short- and long-term strategic plans, and leverage his international experiences in golf and sports. He will also provide strategic counsel to Billy Casper Golf – Buffalo’s parent company – to further strengthen its leading golf-course management platform.

Buffalo currently manages strategy, public relations, branding, marketing-communications, social media and creative services for companies and organizations globally. In addition to golf, the 13-year-old, 30-person agency enjoys a burgeoning portfolio in adjacent segments of sports, travel, hospitality, real estate, fashion and luxury brands.

Billy Casper Golf is the largest owner-operator of golf courses, country clubs and resorts in the U.S. with more than 150 properties in 28 states.

Steranka is widely recognized for his contributions to return golf to the 2016 Olympic Games, branding the PGA and establishing a strategic direction for the world’s largest working sports organization, and developing extensive relationships with domestic and international media partners.

After seven years leading the PGA, he resigned in 2012 to spend more time with family and serve several non-profit organizations. In 2013, he led and participated in strategic planning for the Folds of Honor Foundation, Honda Classic, South Florida PGA Section and West Virginia University School of Journalism.

A year after stepping down, Steranka, 55, decided to re-enter the workforce, choosing Buffalo and Billy Casper Golf to mark his return to professional sports, which he has served his entire career. Prior to joining the PGA in 1988, he was with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Bullets, and acclaimed sports agency ProServ.

“The value of sports as content for media companies and a marketing platform for brands is increasing exponentially,” said Steranka, citing the new Fox Sports-USGA agreement, the continued growth of Golf Channel and rising digital traffic associated with sports. “This means there are tremendous opportunities, both at home and around the world, to expand Buffalo in golf and other markets.

“I have long admired the leadership teams at Buffalo and Billy Casper Golf, and both companies enjoy an unrivaled culture and cutting-edge programs. I’m thrilled to add value to their business model that produces impactful results for clients.”

“We’ve known Joe very well for decades and he brings a strategic approach to identifying growth areas and creating innovative solutions,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of Billy Casper Golf. “His fresh perspectives will diversify revenue centers previously untapped in the marketplace.”

“Sports are becoming a bigger part of our lives as is how we consume content and market to people through sports,” says Rich Katz, Managing Director of Buffalo. “We are excited to incorporate Joe’s high-level thinking helping to monetize these opportunities.”

Steranka began his PGA career in 1988 as Director of Communications and helped grow the organization into one of the most prestigious in all sports. As the PGA’s second CEO, from 2005 to 2012, he was responsible for administration and business leadership of the association serving 27,000 members, overseeing of a $227 million annual budget and a staff of 450.

In addition to his work growing PGA events into leading sports properties, he led development of the acclaimed Golf 2.0 / Future of Golf study. He is one of only 11 Honorary PGA Members in history.

Steranka’s global contributions – the Olympics, establishing the PGA World Alliance and creating the first-ever golf trade show in China, among others – were recently recognized by the Confederation of Professional Golf which awarded him its Christer Lindberg Bowl Award for 2013. Past recipients include Ken Schofield, Peter Dawson, Annika Sorenstam and George O’Grady.
