Six-time Solheim Cup player, two-time Solheim Cup Captain, major champion, and PGA Professional, Alison Nicholas MBE, has been honoured by the Confederation of Professional Golf with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding achievements and contribution to the game.

The Award signifies the outstanding performances, leadership and representation of the game that the victorious 2011 Solheim Cup captain has shown across her career and the contributions she has made to the women’s game.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Nicholas during the Confederation of Professional Golf Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos on Portugal’s Algarve, where she received a standing ovation from the watching Annual Congress delegates and International Team Championship Competitors.

Nicholas follows in the footsteps of previous winners Seve Ballesteros, who was awarded the honour posthumously in 2011, and Tony Jacklin, who received his award on the same stage in Portugal in 2012.

“I’m overwhelmed to be honest, I certainly didn’t expect it, but I’m honoured and humbled to received it,” explained Nicholas. “It blows me away to think my name is amongst those previous recipients.

“Seve Ballesteros was my hero, when you saw him play, his tenacity and sheer charisma was something that we all looked up to and aspired to, so to receive an award he’s also received is incredible.

“Jacklin obviously pioneered the modern Ryder Cup era and taught Europe to win and believe in themselves – I took all those things on board when I took on the Solheim Cup captaincy and wanted to aspire to do the same as him. Both these winners were an inspiration to me so to receive the award after them is unreal, I can’t get my head around it to be honest.”

Chief Executive of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Ian Randell, presented Nicholas with her award alongside Confederation of Professional Golf Chairman, Sandy Jones, after a special message of congratulations from a fellow player and friend with whom she had formed a formidable Solheim Cup partnership with in her playing days, Laura Davies.

“What I’ve done in the game and my contribution to the Solheim Cup has only come because I’ve had the support and help from other people,” said Nicholas. “I hand this award to my family and my friends and to professionals that have helped me achieve all I’ve done.”

Nicholas’ playing career began when she turned professional in 1984 and joined the Ladies European Tour where she went on to take 18 professional wins, including the 1997 US Women’s Open at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon, US.

Her determination, drive and playing record caused her to become a stalwart member of the LET and a respected regular in six Solheim Cup matches from 1990-2000, notably on the winning side in the ’92 and ’00 matches.

In 2003 and 2005 Nicholas was a non-playing assistant captain for Sweden’s Catrin Nilsmark, but returned to the tournament in 2009 as the Captain for the matches taking place at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois, US, where only two wins from the European side in the final day’s singles allowed the US team to retain the trophy.

But things were destined to change at Kileen Castle, Ireland, in 2011 when Nicholas showed her distinctive mettle and determination to pick her and her team up to come out on top by 15 points to the USA team’s 13.

“The last 20 minutes were just so tight – it looked like the Americans were going to win it and then suddenly the last three matches turned around. It was just amazing. I’ve talked about it with many people and lots have said it was the most exciting Solheim Cup they’ve ever seen. The most important thing for me was to keep calm, keep that belief…it was a sensational victory and the players were incredible.”

Since then Nicholas has retired from her playing and captaincy roles and is now a PGA Professional coach in the outskirts of Birmingham, UK, looking to develop the future stars of the game and pass on the lessons she has learned from an outstanding career at the forefront of the women’s game in Europe.

The second person to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of America, Joe Steranka, received one of the most coveted Confederation of Professional Golf Awards at the 2013 Annual Gala Awards Dinner, as he became the latest recipient of the Christer Lindberg Bowl.

Steranka (pictured centre) received his award at the Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex and hosted at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, in Portugal’s Algarve region. The Gala Awards capped off the week long Annual Congress that was supported by Glenmuir and the Associação Turismo do Algarve, and ran alongside the International Team Championship at Onyria Palmares.

The Christer Lindberg Bowl is one of the Association’s most prized awards and recognises the outstanding contribution of an individual to the world of golf in the name of the first Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Christer Lindberg.

“To think that there are [previous winners] like Ken Schofield, Annika Sorenstam, the Solheim family, George O’Grady and Peter Dawson – people that I know and that I call friends – makes me very proud to receive it and it’s humbling to get an award like this,” explained Steranka during his acceptance speech.

“You don’t set out in your career to win awards – you do it to because you love what you do and I’ve been the luckiest man in the world because I’ve never worked a day in my life. I was fortunate as an avid sportsman to get paid to go work in sports and I’ve never looked back.”

“Each of the past winners that have been honoured has contributed something to golf because we love the game and we consider it the greatest game of all, and we do it selflessly.”

Receiving his award from the Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Sandy Jones (picture above right), alongside Confederation of Professional Golf Chief Executive, Ian Randell (picutred above left), Steranka was able to reminisce about his effect on golf during his time at the helm of the largest PGA in the world that spans further than just the United States:

“Golf is global and as we work in our respected positions taking care of the members that we serve etc., we’re often at times focused locally. But there are a few times where we get a chance to have some slight influence on the game overseas, which is part of the tradition of PGAs. But as you’re working then you don’t expect to see recognition come and it has a special meaning when you’re recognised by bodies outside the country that you’re primarily focused on.”

Steranka began his journey to the top of golf at West Virginia University in the United States where he studied Journalism. A passion for the communications side of sport placed him within his first marketing position at NBA Team, the Washington Bullets, where he sold season tickets and group outings. It wasn’t long before he moved up a gear to Director of Public Relations at the Cleveland Cavaliers at just 23 years old.

Two years with the Cavaliers led him to ProServ, one of the world’s largest sports management and marketing agencies, where he resided as Vice-President for Public Relations working with stars such as Michael Jordan and Jimmy Connors.

But in 1988 Steranka made the move to the PGA of America where he joined as Director of Communications and soon moved up to Senior Director of Communications and Marketing until 2005. During this time he led the creation and expansion of the PGA of America’s broadcast properties, merchandising, and licensing, amongst other things, helping to make the Associtaion the media giant that it is today.

“To think that as I graduated University and went to work for some of the pro basketball teams and the later on for ProServ, to somehow have the responsibility of first communicating the PGA of America’s message and the message about golf, and then eventually leading the administration as Chief Executive – it was a dream come true.”

With his promotion in 2005 he became only the second Chief Executive Officer in the Association’s history. Here he had a great effect on the leadership of the 27,000 PGA Professional members within the PGA of America, and helped to further expand the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup amongst many other activities. He was also a major influence in the development of the PGA World Alliance, an entity that represents over 55,000 PGA Professionals in all corners of the globe.

Holland held their nerve on Portugal’s Algarve to win The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship and end a 22-year ITC drought.

In doing so, and having finished joint second last year, the Dutch trio of Ralph Miller, Robin Swane and Nicolas Nube turned the tables on Scotland at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort.

Twelve months ago Holland had trailed the Scots by nine strokes – this time they finished two ahead of them to claim the €6,000 first prize.

But, as that victory margin suggests, it was a close run thing. And not just the battle between them.

With three strokes spanning the top five teams, the result remained in doubt until Swane negotiated the par four final hole of the Alvor course in regulation to clinch victory and ensure his nation’s name was inscribed on the trophy for the first time since 1991.

For Swane, the Dutch captain, and his teammates this triumph was a first, however. Furthermore it reflected the growing standard of golf among his compatriots.

“The three members of the team are all Dutch-born players,” he said. “That wasn’t the case before when we were represented by overseas players.”

All three players performed well but it was Miller that was Holland’s ace in the pack. Having broken the course record in the third round by posting an eight-under-par 64, the Dutch pro, who has an American father and Dutch mother, followed up with a three-under-par 69.

That coupled with Swane’s two-over was sufficient for the Dutch to maintain the two-stroke lead they held at the start of the final round of the tournament which was supported by Glenmuir, the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve and Ryder Cup European Development Trust.

Miller’s round also ensured he finished level with Scotland’s Graham Fox as the tournament’s leading individual on two-under-par for the four rounds.

Completing the trio of players from the 26 teams who were under par for the tournament was Sweden’s Magnus Atlevi who signed off with a 69 to finish on one-under.

For others, however, the event was very much a case of what might have been, especially the Irish.

Needing to par the last to force a play-off, Brendan McGovern posted a triple bogey seven. Even more punitive was the 10 John Kelly racked up at the fifth en route to a one-over-par 73. For once the luck of the Irish was conspicuous by its absence.

Leading scores (after fourth and final round): Holland +3; Scotland +5; Denmark, Wales and Ireland +6; Italy +9; Sweden +11.

Former European Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher today launched a nationwide campaign which could potentially help to save the lives of golfers of all abilities and ages.

Drawing on his own personal experience of suffering a sudden cardiac arrest on August 28, the 1995 winning captain was joined by a gallery of friends and colleagues from the world of sport and show business at Wentworth Club to activate the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator Campaign 2014.

It was only thanks to the availability of an automated external defibrillator (AED) following his collapse during a dinner reception in Aberdeen, along with early-response CPR treatment at the venue, that Gallacher was able to regain consciousness and take steps towards a full recovery.

However, that close brush with death inspired Bernard and his wife, Lesley, to announce plans to lead a campaign for AEDs to be widely available in every single golf club and driving range in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

With the Gallachers’ profile and encouragement, allied to a fundraising campaign being run concurrently with the PGA and Arrhythmia Alliance – the Heart Rhythm Charity – an estimated 2600 golfing venues and around 4,000,000 club golfers could benefit from the Campaign.

Gallacher, who was speaking at the Campaign launch in the Ballroom of the clubhouse where he spent over 20 years as a Club Professional, said: “I consider myself incredibly fortunate that a defibrillator was on hand in Aberdeen to resuscitate me following my sudden cardiac arrest. But for that AED and the quick-thinking, expertise and life-saving skills of the medical personnel in the room that night, I wouldn’t be here today.

“Without early intervention, an individual has just a 5% chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest, so Lesley and I felt it appropriate to try to ensure others are equally fortunate should they collapse in or around a golfing venue in future.

“Currently, just 30% of golf clubs have a defibrillator and our stated aim is to try to raise awareness of the importance of having an AED close by in case of emergency, and to increase that figure considerably by encouraging every club or driving range in the UK and Ireland to have at least one public-access defibrillator by the end of 2014.

“Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, and possibly on the golf course. We want to do whatever it takes to raise the level of awareness of defibrillators and to get them into more clubs around the country.”

Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “Bernard’s experience has shown the life-saving difference of early CPR and use of a defibrillator. We are delighted to join him and the PGA in this campaign for every golf club in the UK and Ireland to have their own device.

“An estimated 100,000 people in the UK die each year from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It kills more people than AIDS, breast cancer and lung cancer combined. Golf clubs nationally serve more than four million people each year, but only a third currently have a defibrillator. Our aim is for every club to have one by the end of 2014.”

Sandy Jones, Chief Executive of the PGA, added: “The PGA is delighted to join with Bernard in this campaign to install defibrillators in every golf club in Great Britain and Ireland. It has been a long standing ambition of my own and the PGA that this should happen, and as we have seen through the near tragic experience of Bernard, it is vital that such equipment is available at the time of need.

“Defibrillators in golf clubs, without doubt, will save lives and we thank Bernard and Lesley for allowing us to join with them in this campaign.”

George O’Grady, Chief Executive of the European Tour, commented: “Bernard is one of our great champions and it came as a huge shock to hear what happened to him, but also a massive relief to then learn of the importance of the emergency procedures which helped to save his life.

“All of us at the European Tour are fully supportive of Bernard and Lesley’s campaign to get AEDs into every golfing facility in the UK and Ireland and we will provide all possible assistance to ensure the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator Campaign achieves its ultimate goal.”

Julian Small, Chief Executive of Wentworth Club, said: “We would encourage all golf clubs to get defibrillators. At Wentworth we have four – in the clubhouse, the two refreshment huts on the courses and in the Tennis and Health Club.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)

SCA happens because of a problem in the heart’s electrical system, caused by an abnormal heart rhythm; or cardiac arrhythmia. The most common arrhythmia that leads to SCA is called ventricular fibrillation (VF).

A person’s heart will stop beating without warning when they suffer SCA, they will collapse, lose consciousness and look extremely pale. SCA strikes without warning, regardless of age, killing 100,000 people in the UK every year. It requires immediate treatment to keep blood pumping and to restart the heart to prevent brain damage and death, therefore immediate defibrillation is critical.

CPR alone will not restart a heart following SCA but can keep the victim alive until an ambulance crew arrives – which in the UK is usually within eight minutes of a call to 999.

CPR alone saves 9% of victims

Immediate CPR and defibrillation with an AED increases chance of survival to 50%

Survival rates drop 7-10% every minute without defibrillation. Quick action can make the difference between life and death.

International Team Championship goes Dutch and ends drought

————————

Championship contenders form a lengthy queue

The wind that continues to ravage The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship on Portugal’s Algarve is proving anything but an ill one in terms of making the tournament competitive.

At the halfway stage of the event at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort almost a third of the 26-strong field harbours realistic hopes of claiming €6,000 first prize.

Five strokes span the leading eight teams after a second round during which, somewhat perversely, the wind was stronger than on the first day but individual scores improved.

As at the end of the opening circuit of the Alvor Course, Denmark occupy pole position but do so in isolation after Holland, their overnight cohabitants, faltered.

So much so that defending champions Scotland, Ireland and Sweden, who are all two strokes adrift of the Danes in second place, have climbed above them.

Greg McBain (74) was the Scots’ standard bearer, Cian McNamara (73) and Brendan McGovern (74) followed suit for Ireland, while Magnus Atevi (pictured above) proved Sweden’s ace with a one-under-par round of 71.

Atevi is just one of two players to defy to combination of a challenging course in excellent condition and the elements and post a sub-par round. The other is Germany’s Dennis Lohrmann (pictured below) who, curiously, was in the same three-ball as the Swede.

There, though, and aside from their final score, the similarities ended. The German enjoyed a high-octane outward half, posting four birdies and just one bogey. Two birdies followed on the way home but were spoiled by a double and two single bogeys.

By contrast, Atevi made less spectacular but equally effective progress with a brace of birdies in each half, successes compromised by a single bogey in the front nine and another two during the inward half.

Meanwhile, the Danes were indebted to Martin Hansen for maintaining their hold on first place in the event, which is supported by Glenmuir, the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve and Ryder Cup European Development Trust.

Hansen posted a level par round of 72 as did Lee Rooke of Wales and Portugal’s Hugo Santos.

Rooke, winner of the Asbri-sponsored Welsh National PGA Championship in October, and Jon Bevan (74) were instrumental in Wales joining the French in sixth place, four shots off the pace.

However, Santos, twice winner of the UniCredit PGA Professional Championship of Europe, lacked a helping hand to light the blue touch paper and ignite Portugal’s challenge.

————————

Wind fails to blow Denmark and Holland off course

Brutal, tough and a struggle were some of the more restrained reactions at the end of a wind-ravaged opening round of The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship on Portugal’s Algarve.

Wind fuelled turbulence on the adjacent Mediterranean Sea was replicated on the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort and reflected by the scores after the first of four rounds.

The tournament is supported by Glenmuir, the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve and Ryder Cup European Development Trust and that Holland and Denmark head the 26-strong field with a score of five-over is testament to the havoc wrought by Mother Nature.

Likewise the fact that Scotland, the defending champions who lie third on six-over, posted an opening return of seven-under at the same venue 12 months ago.

Captained again by David Orr, the Scottish trio was indebted to one of its two new members – Graham Fox (picture right) – for an impressive start.

His level par round of 72 was the best of the day. Nevertheless Fox, who is attached to Clydeway Golf, Glasgow, was left to rue what might have been after a double bogey at the final hole. And that that followed an eagle at the par five 17th only served to compound his frustration.

“It was a good start but the double bogey was a real disappointment,” he said. “It was pretty tough out there – we were having to take four irons for shots of 160 yards.”

Similarly, Ralph Miller (pictured above) and Jacob Nordestgaard, the key contributors for Holland and Denmark respectively, were left to ponder ifs, buts and maybes.

Miller, the Dutch-based English PGA Professional, was two-under at the turn but, with the wind even more malevolent on the back nine, ended what he described as a ‘brutal’ round one-over.

Nordestgaard (pictured left), also finished one-over after a round that featured five birdies but was pock-marked with a double and four single bogeys.

He, too, found the going difficult and said: “Every hole was a real struggle. Thankfully I putted well and my iron play was good. It needed to be in those conditions.”

Nordestgaard, who is making his first appearance in a tournament which his nation has yet to win, was supported by Morten Hedergaard. He completed his round in four-over, the same as Holland’s Robin Swane.

Fox, meanwhile, was supported by Orr who finished on six-over, a round that ensured a three-stroke advantage over France, Ireland, Spain and Sweden who share fourth place.

————————

26 Nationalities Prepared for International Team Championship Battle

The 2013 Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship gets underway this week at Onyria Palmares on Portugal’s Algarve coast, and will see 26 Member PGAs compete for the coveted ITC Crown.

Returning for its 24th year on the Confederation of Professional Golf calendar, the ITC sees the top PGA Professionals from across the continent play in teams of three with the best two gross rounds from the team counting towards the four-round total.

The ITC runs alongside the Confederation of Professional Golf Annual Congress and both events are supported by Glenmuir, the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve, and Ryder Cup European Development Trust, whilst players and Congress Delegates all stay under one roof at the fabulous facilities of Hotel Vila Gale Lagos. The ITC Winners will also be presented their trophy at the Gala Dinner along with the Annual Awards supported by Rolex.

2012 ITC Winners, Scotland (pictured alongside Glenmuir’s Colin Mee (left)), return this year and David Orr who was part of that winning team will feature alongside Graham Fox and Greg McBain as they attempt to defend their title to take their tally to eight championships.

But there will be strong competition from the likes of Italy whose team includes the 2013 UniCredit PGA Professional Champion of Europe, Federico Elli, along with highly experienced Professionals Emanuele Canonica and Marco Bernardini.

Also offering up a strong challenge will be the likes of 2011 winners France – Benjamin Nicolay, Frederic Cupillard and Bertrand Cornut; the strong Dutch contingent of Ralph Miller, Robin Swane and Nicolas Nube; England’s Greenwood, David Callaway and Nick Brennan, all of whom are members of the 2013 PGA Cup team.

2012 Review – Scotland in Seventh Heaven on the Algarve

Scotland turned the final round of The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship on Portugal’s Algarve into a victory procession to win the competition for a seventh time.

Having led the Glenmuir-sponsored tournament from the start, albeit in tandem with England on day one, the Scots increased their dominance as it unfolded.

Or they did until to the final round over the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort.

Then, with a challenge from England or France, who were second and third respectively overnight, failing to materialise, the Scots did not have to move through the gears to claim the €6,000 winner’s cheque.

Five clear of the 25-strong field at the beginning of the day, the Scots had almost doubled their advantage when David Orr was left with a tap in for par at the 18th hole.

That left them 16-under-par for the tournament, the same total they had ended round three.

But with England and France effectively going backwards and Holland left with too much to do after starting the round a dozen shots adrift, there was never any danger of the Scots snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

All of which made the forecast of French captain Benjamin Nicolay prior to the final round spot on.

“Scotland will be tough to beat,” said Nicolay, who led the French to victory last year. “I think we’ll be fighting for second place now.”

In the event France had to settle for fourth place, 10 strokes behind the Scots, and he was right on both counts.

While England and Holland, inspired by sub-par rounds from Robin Swane and Ralph Miller, scrapped for the runner’s up birth and ended up sharing it, Scotland strengthened their grip on the trophy.

And they did so without having to produce the high-octane golf that had lit up their first three rounds.

Then Orr and Gareth Wright had hogged the limelight, this time it was David Patrick’s turn.

His one-under-par 71 was the pick of the Scottish trio and typified what Orr believes is their strength.

“We’re all very good golfers but we dovetail well as a team,” he said. “That was apparent today and has been all week as we’ve all played our part.

Seven sub par rounds and another two in regulation out of the dozen the Scots played was evidence of the consistency.

Equally important for Orr was the experience of his trio.

“We’ve got more than 200 Challenge Tour and 50 European Tour appearances between us and that helped us today,” he explained.

“Once we’d gone five clear at the end of the third round, I was more relaxed because I felt we had the experience and know-how to see the job through.”

Scotland’s victory also ended a six-year famine in the competition, their last success coming in 2006 a year after Orr won a Europro Challenge Tour tournament at the same venue.

“The course has been revamped since then and is a lot different now,” he added. “But I’ve always had fond memories of the place and they’re even fonder now.”

Greg McBain (74) was the Scots’ standard bearer, Cian McNamara (73) and Brendan McGovern (74) followed suit for Ireland, while Magnus Atevi (pictured right) proved Sweden’s ace with a one-under-par round of 71.

————————

Captained again by David Orr, the Scottish trio was indebted to one of its two new members – Graham Fox – for an impressive start.

Similarly, Ralph Miller and Jacob Nordestgaard, the key contributors for Holland and Denmark respectively, were left to ponder ifs, buts and maybes.

————————

————————

The 2013 Confederation of Professional Golf Annual Congress returns this week to Portugal’s Algarve region and Hotel Vila Galé Lagos for the 24th staging of the event that sits in tandem with the International Team Championship just down the road at Onyria Palmares.

The Annual Congress this year will be one of the largest pan-European golf events as delegates from across the 39 Confederation of Professional Golf Member countries assemble alongside representatives from many other international golf organisations. The event is once again supported by Glenmuir, the Associação Turismo do Algarve, and the Ryder Cup European Development Trust.

The Congress will have a heavier practical focus than ever before and will give delegates more hands-on assistance, as seminars and workshops will be aimed in generating discussion and ensuring delegates come away from the Congress with actionable insights for the coming year.

Speakers across the week hail from across the industry and begin in Block 1 with Former CEO of the PGA of America, Joe Steranka, alongside Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf and Chief Executive of the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, Sandy Jones, who will be looking at what can be done to influence the development of the game.

Duncan Weir, The R&A’s Executive Director – Working For Golf, will take a seminar together with Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett, and will focus on PGA Professionals being a workforce for the game.

The final session of Block 1 will look at reputation, branding and how PGAs can become more valuable brands with Whitestone International Ltd Director, Chris Lightfoot, who has worked with the Confederation of Professional Golf on a strategic and branding review, and Confederation of Professional Golf Board Director, Luca Salvetti.

Block 2 will also feature three sessions – renowned golf consultant and non-Executive Director of Goodwood Golf Club in the UK, Eddie Bullock, will line up alongside Vice-Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf and Managing Director of the PGA of Sweden, Mikael Sorling to discuss member engagement and services that PGAs offer their individual PGA Professional members.

European Tour Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roger Hawkes, and Managing Director of LPP Consulting, Dr. Philip Hopley, will look at member wellbeing with specific focus towards issues such as anti-doping issues in golf, and psychological resilience of members.

Focusing on Junior Golf will be CEO of League Golf, LLC, Bob Longmire, and Chief Executive of the Golf Foundation, Mike Round, who will discuss potential initiatives for junior golf development and the role of the PGA Professional within those.

The week will be capped off with the Confederation of Professional Golf Gala Dinner and Annual Awards supported by Rolex. The deserved winners of awards such as the Confederation of Professional Golf Lifetime Achievement Award and Christer Lindberg Bowl will receive their accolades together with the team that are crowned 2013 champions at the International Team Championship.

England’s Robert Coles capped off a stormy and turbulent week at the 2013 Beko Classic with a second-round, course-record, 64 (-8) that together with his first round left him two ahead of the competition with a -12 total (132) at Gloria Golf Club in Belek, Turkey.

In a second round that spanned two days due to severe weather and delays during Round 2, Coles managed to take advantage of his tied-5th position going into the final round and finish on top to take home the winner’s cheque for $8,000, and his second Beko Classic title having won in 2009 at Antalya Golf Club.

Round 1’s conditions were representative of standard Turkish weather, however, severe lightening storms and downpours caused rain delays on day two of the tournament and subsequently a shortening of the tournament to two rounds as opposed to the scheduled three.

Coles had only hit two shots at the first hole of his second round when play was halted, but came out the following day knowing he had to attack the course to move up the leaderboard:

“It feels fantastic to win, I was lucky enough to win a few years ago, so to come back and win it again is really nice,” explained Coles. “I started off really well on the New Course – started off slowly but managed to get it going and finished off ok. I had a good draw really – I was 09:50am the second day, which was obviously quote late and meant I didn’t have to play too many…when I returned I could not believe how good the drainage was on the golf course…we played today and the sun was out and it was a dry golf course.

“Whenever you come back and you start on the golf course mid-way round you’re always a bit apprehensive about getting off to a decent start…we all knew it was a two-round tournament and we needed to have a good day. I’ve not had the best of years so this is great way to finish and I’m delighted with it really,” he added.

Round 1’s play went without a hiccup and superb 66s from Welshman, Rhys Enoch, and England’s Ryder Cup star, Paul Broadhurst, left them atop the leaderboard overnight as forecasts of heavy rain became evident.

Broadhurst continued his fine form, carding a second round, four-under 68 two finish at tied-second on ten-under par (134) alongside fellow countrymen Jamie Elson and Andrew Marshall, both of whom carded second round five-under par 67s.

2011 Open Champion, Darren Clarke, also made a bid for the title but not even a second round fiver-under par 67 was enough to catch Coles, as Clarke finished on a nine-under par 135 total for the week in fifth place.

Early leader Enoch looked to chase but a triple-bogey on the 8th of Gloria’s New Course was enough to thwart his efforts as he finished on two-under par for the day and in sixth position on eight-under par (136) for the tournament.

Solid scoring throughout the week from the stellar field showed the great quality of players invited to play at the longest-running Pro-Am on the Confederation of Professional Golf calendar, with stars of the European and Challenge Tours, such as Raymond Russell, Ronan Rafferty, Philip Archer and special guest hailing from the PGA Tour, John Daly, all battling the elements expertly.

The tournament’s Pro-Am honours were taken by Bona Team who’s net -40 (124 + 124 = 248) gave them a four-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard having been aided by England’s Ben Mason in round one and Rhys Enoch in round two.
