The European Tour Performance Institute (ETPI) visited this year’s GOLF EUROPE trade show at Messe Augsburg in Germany, and treated delegates to an insight behind the programme that allows golfers of all abilities to practice, learn and improve using the knowledge and tools developed by the elite professionals on the European Tour.

The aim of the seminars was to provide the PGA professionals with the tools, knowledge and confidence to work in a multi-disciplinary team that has been found to be a very effective way of helping players achieve their performance goals, and were delivered by Director of the European Tour Physiotherapy Unit, Rob Hillman, and Sports Biomechanics Consultant to The European Tour, Jean Jacques (JJ) Rivet, both of whom are co-founders of ETPI.

The investigation and intervention requires the use of varied disciplines that create a team of specialists around a player including the PGA professional, physiotherapist, biomechanics specialists, strength & conditioning experts and sports medicine specialists.

ETPI was developed by the European Tour’s medical & performance services team to allow golfers of all abilities to make use of the knowledge that has been amassed by the Tour’s performance and medical practicioners over the past 20 years using data from the best players in the world.

“We work at a very select end of the world of golf where we’re fortunate to be working with at the leading edge of everything that’s going on, but there’s a broad base of people that underpin that and we believe that everyone can benefit from these concepts,” explained Hillman.

“Globally as an organisation we really want to grow the game and we want to do what we can to support that. For example, bringing our skills and experience to bear at events like this and giving the day-to-day teaching Pros some insight into what we do is great, and we hope give them some useful tools to take away which I think is a very important part of our role.”

Rivet added, “At it’s origin they [coaches] have the capacity to understand how the body is moving and to create very good coaching, but you need to understand how it works, how the forces are working, and how you can see a before and after in your coaching…that’s why I always enjoy opening coaches’ minds and motivating them to be at the highest position they can be.”

PGA of Italy Professional, Federico Elli, carded a final round five-under par 67 to post a 14-under par total of 274, to become the 2013 UniCredit PGA Professional Champion of Europe and take home the €10,000 winner’s cheque.

As his rivals attempted to get close, the Italian continued his dominance of Pravets Golf & Spa Resort by making no less than seven birdies in his round. The final blow came on the last hole where after a cool and calm drive and second shot to the centre of the green was followed with a thundering 25-foot putt that rattled into the hole for his 14-under finish.

“It’s a great feeling to be Champion, I’m really touched by it and I don’t really know what to say,” explained the Italian Professional. “I had a really good round of golf today and it’s just amazing.”

It was a Swiss PGA contingent made up of Alec Roberts and Corsin Caviezel that were putting the pressure on the eventual winner with both finishing tied for second place on eight-under par (280), taking home €5,350 each.

“It was great playing in the last group with Federico,” said Roberts. “We were really having a lot of fun. There was a great moment on the putting green where everyone else had teed off and we said ‘hey, let’s enjoy this today, we don’t get to be in positions like this very often’, and we did – it was perfect.”

Elli led overnight by three shots and made a subdued start to his fourth round with two pars and a bogey at the third. But he changed gear to card three birdies in the next four holes, making the turn at 11-under overall. Then another run of three birdies in four holes propelled him away from the chasing pack, and not even a bogey at the 14th hole could slow him down as he made three straight pars, followed up with the grandstand finish birdie on the 18th.

“On 18 I preferred to take a risk with a driver as with a 2-iron I would have had a very long second-shot,” added Elli. “When I saw the putt go in I couldn’t believe it – it was a relief!”

The Confederation of Professional Golf wish to thank all those involved in making the event a huge success, including UniCredit, Pravets Golf & Spa Resort, and the PGA Professionals each representing their home PGAs.

The Confederation of Professional Golf has renewed its ties with the five-star La Manga Club in a partnership that ignites an old flame between the Association and the resort, and will take the form of a brand new Pro-Am Tournament being added to the 2014 Confederation of Professional Golf Tournament calendar.

Taking place in early March, the event will see 20-plus teams from across the continent – made up of one professional and three amateurs – gather at La Manga Club to contest an overall prize fund in excess of €20,000.

Players will compete over 54 holes for an array of individual and team honours, with packages costing €800 per person (€2,400 per team, professionals go free) including tournament entry, one practice round, a welcome cocktail reception, prize-giving gala dinner and all accommodation.

La Manga Club was once the continental European base of the Confederation of Professional Golf, hosting the Association’s Annual Congress and International Team Championships for many years, and now the pro-am tournament will be the second major international event that La Manga Club will stage early next year, with the resort also set to host the 2014 Spanish Seniors Amateur Championship in February.

Ian Randell, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Professional Golf, said: “La Manga Club has played a significant role in the history of the Confederation of Professional Golf, hosting the Association’s Annual Congress and International Team Championship in the formative years of our association.

“We are delighted to be renewing our relationship and this tournament signifies the start of another exciting chapter in our partnership together.”

Gary Silcock, Director of Golf at La Manga Club, said: “As Europe’s top sports and leisure destination, it was a logical step for La Manga Club to team up with the Confederation of Professional Golf again and this is fantastic news for the resort.

“This region of Spain offers the perfect climate for winter golf. The resort is very popular with professionals hosting coaching groups on overseas breaks and the pro-am will give us the chance to showcase the extensive golf and practice facilities that we have to a discerning international audience.”

Having celebrated its 40th birthday last year, La Manga Club stands as a bastion of European golf, sports and lifestyle resorts.

Among its most recent accolades, La Manga Club has been voted as the best golf resort in Spain by UK readers of Today’s Golfer magazine for the last two years, hosted the 2013 Spanish Amateur International Golf Championship and is the overseas training base of the Lawn Tennis Association until 2016.

The Augsburg Trade Fair was held from 29 September to 1 October 2013 on 8,500 m2 of exhibition space and was all about golf. Professionals and representatives from 29 countries met in a sporting atmosphere at the international trade fair for golf: GOLF EUROPE.

“We really are going in the right direction”, stated the managing director of Messe Augsburg, Gerhard Reiter, “The leading businesses from the industry such as TaylorMade adidas Golf Company, which presented itself with the TaylorMade, adidas Golf, Ashworth and Adams Golf brands, and the Wilson Sporting Goods Company, felt really comfortable in Augsburg, as did the other exhibitors who numbered more than 120 – that is the best foundation for developing this top-drawer trade fair, which was held in Augsburg for the second time and has now already been held on a total of twenty occasions.”

Andreas Dorsch, the managing director of the Golfmanagement Verband Deutschland, confirmed that, “With its second appearance in Augsburg Golf Europe has given a clear sign that it is going in the right direction. It has established itself as an important venue for the industry and in its present format it really has justified its right to exist. Golf Management Verband Deutschland will continue to commit itself to working together as the ideal partner with Golf Europe.”

A high-power supporting programme rounds off the exhibition programme. The recently introduced Coaching Seminar laid on by the ETPI, and organised by the PGA European Tour, provided answers to the questions posed by professional golfers, backed up with in- depth scientific data about the human body, driving and the flight of the ball. This multi-

disciplinary approach which is already used by the European Tour players, ensures that the best possible development programme can be produced, tailored to meet the requirements of the individual.

Those who are interested can expand their specialist knowledge and pick up tips and ideas at first hand in the lectures presented by experts at no cost in the Learn & Earn Zone, organised by the Confederation of Professional Golf and the PGA of Germany. Felix Lechner, marketing manager of the partner working together with GOLF EUROPE, notably the PGA of Germany, which provides intellectual and professional support, is pleased that the programme of lectures has been so well received, “The trade fair is much too good to do without it”.

The happy PRODUCT AWARD Winner in 2013

Exhibitors with particularly innovative products were afforded an opportunity to submit their new products in a total of nine categories with the aim of winning the GOLF EUROPE PRODUCT AWARD. An independent international panel of experts filled with well-known representatives from the trade, the media and professional players assessed the 62 product innovations submitted in the course of the trade fair.

In the Caddy category the SugarMonkeys won with QOD and the HAAS commercial agency won with its SUN MOUNTAIN COMBO, in the Clothing category the 1st prize went to Reithmeier Sportmodenvertrieb for its Wild Green. For GPS equipment, Garmin won with Garmin Approach S2 and Golf Tech won with Caddietech X1. In the Accessories category Golf Tech also won with BIG MAX I-Dry Raincover. TaylorMade won in the Clubs category with the SLDR Driver and Adams Golf won a prize with Tight Lies Fairway Way. In the Training Aids category for RSSDD – premiumbrands4golf won with Welling Put. In the Golfbags category the prize went to Golf Tech for its I-Dry Aqua Standbag and to The Cork Tree for its GOLF CARTBAG IN CORK LEATHER. In the Shoes category Henry & Magda managed to notch up the top spot with Henry & Magda as did adidas Golf with adidas adizero Tour.

Clean Winners e.V. was represented with a stand at GOLF EUROPE

Clean Winners e.V. campaigns for children in need aged from six to sixteen years. Clean- Winners children are given support and sports teachers for all different types of sport. To this end the association, its representatives and well-known ambassadors such as the PGA- Professional, Felix Lubenau, campaign on behalf of children and youngsters from socially- deprived areas in Germany and had a stand at the trade fair.

After the trade fair the visitors and exhibitors visited the second-oldest town in Germany

After the trade fair most exhibitors and visitors took advantage of the opportunity to stroll around the wonderful old town centre of Augsburg as well and allow themselves to be spoiled by the gastronomic delights on offer. The short distance from the trade fair to the centre of Augsburg offered the visitors and exhibitors an outstanding opportunity to take a leisurely stroll around the town in the evening.

As part of its initiative to address pace-of-play issues in the game of golf, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has introduced a series of educational tools designed to educate the golf community on the factors that influence the time it takes to play the game.

The new tools include a series of six videos that address the following topics:

Why traffic jams occur on the course

How course setup impacts pace of play

Improving pace of play around the green

Being prepared to hit

When disaster strikes

Alternative formats

The first two videos (“Why traffic jams occur on the course” and “How course setup impacts pace of play”) can be viewed by visiting the USGA’s Pace of Play Resource Center at www.usga.org/whilewereyoung. Additional videos will be introduced through the rest of the year.

“The USGA is making significant progress on addressing pace-of-play issues in the game, pursuing real solutions that consider all of the factors that contribute to longer playing times,” said USGA Executive Director Mike Davis. “These videos bring the key challenges to light in an engaging and creative manner that will help meet our goal of educating and mobilizing the entire golf community to understand the causes of slow play and to be part of the solution.”

The narrators for the videos are “Today” host Matt Lauer, Headline News anchor Robin Meade and 2004 U.S. Senior Open champion Peter Jacobsen. Some of the country’s top teaching professionals also contribute to the video series.

“Pace of play is an issue, no doubt about it,” said Jacobsen. “From the pro game that I’ve been part of for many years right down to the friendly match at a local course, nobody likes a five-hour round. These videos do a great job in helping viewers understand that it’s not just about us golfers – it’s a problem with a lot of moving parts. I believe that collectively we can solve this and that’s why I decided to help out.”

The videos build on the USGA’s “While We’re Young” campaign, which has created greater awareness of pace of play within the golf community. In addition to viewing the new educational videos, visitors to www.usga.org/whilewereyoung will be able to join the thousands of fellow golfers who have signed a pledge to take personal measures to improve pace of play. Once they have viewed all six videos, pledge signees will receive a certificate recognizing them as a USGA pace-of-play ambassador.

Launched in February 2013, the USGA’s initiative is leading the golf industry toward reducing the time that it takes to play in order to help ensure the game’s sustainability for current and future generations of golfers. Some of the programs comprising this initiative include a symposium on Nov. 7, the utilization of a pace-of-play model based on player data, the development of several tools to help golf facilities manage pace of play at their courses, and the creation of “While We’re Young” promotional materials.
