The speaker lineup for the 2013 Heads of Training Summit, taking place from 20-22 March 2013 at Chervò Golf Hotel Spa & Resort San Vigilio, Italy, has been announced and will guarantee to be one of the most useful and inspiring meetings of the year.

The Summit is targeted at the Heads of Training, or nominated individuals, working within a PGA Training Programme on the delivery of education and training programmes, and will give those involved an opportunity to share best practice and learn from each others’ own experiences across a wide variety of subject matter.

The summit’s main programme begins on the 21st March, but delegates are encouraged to attend the Wednesday sessions, which include practical coaching sessions and a game of golf. Thursday’s sessions will look at the pulling together of education from multiple sources with PGA of Canada Technical Director, Glenn Cundari; Initial Professional Education with Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett; Health and Wellbeing with Dr Julian Dugmore; and education recognition and evaluation with the PGA of Sweden’s Vice Managing Director and Director of Education, Johan Hampf.

The final day of sessions will include a look at the development of the game in Europe with European Golf Club Owners Association Director, Lodewijk Klootwijk; as well as an explanation of the outcomes to the pan-European Golf Stand Project with Tony Bennett; culminating with a discussion around ‘post-compulsory education’ with the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Director of Education & Career Development, Dr. Kyle Phillpots.

Director of Education & Membership for The Confederation of Professional Golf, Tony Bennett said “Bringing together the Heads of Training allows us to better appreciate the challenges that our Member countries face while at the same time sharing good practices, offering solutions and facilitating meaningful discussions that have a long term effect on the future of the PGA golf professionals”.

The Heads of Training Summit follows on from the Coaches Circle (18-20 March), which will focus on the latest issues and discussion points that exist within the world of coaching, and has limited spaces available for national coaches, coaches of elite players (on a level 1,2 or 3 tour), and coaches involved in national junior programmes.

Both events will be set in the beautiful surroundings of the Chervò Golf Hotel Spa & Resort San Vigilio in Pozzolengo, in the splendid setting of Lake Garda, which is immersed in the green morainic hills (More information here: http://bit.ly/TKX5ZN).

Teams from across Europe enjoy Spanish tournament test

Professionals and amateurs from nine different countries recently enjoyed a three-day Pro-Am in Southern Spain which took in some of the best courses on the Continent.

While the rest of Europe was blanketed with snow, 14 Pro-Am teams took part in the event which was organised by Golfbreaks.com, an Official Supplier to The PGA and the Official Golf Travel Company to the Confederation of Professional Golf.

After a first round played at the exclusive La Reserva course, the competitors had the pleasure of playing the world famous Valderrama, host course of the 1997 Ryder Cup. The signature par-five 17th duly lived up to its fearsome reputation, claiming many a victim throughout the day. The tournament was completed by a round at the striking Almenara course.

The Professional individual competition was jointly won by Peter Hansson of Sweden and Britain’s Matthew Barber (above). The leading pair both finished on a three-round total of 232, with Croatian Pro Miro Raic claiming third after finishing just one stroke behind. The Pro-Am competition was won by the German team, headed up by British PGA Pro Graeme Aspinall (below).

The response to the event from those who took part was overwhelmingly positive. Joint-winner, Matthew Barber, from Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre, was quick to praise the choice of venues and the conditioning of the courses, as well as the “great organisation and management of the event by Golfbreaks.com.”

Next winter’s Pro-Am schedule has already been confirmed, with the event returning to Valderrama and La Reserva on February 7th-10th, 2013. A second tournament will take place at the prestigious PGA Catalunya a month later, on March 7th-10th, 2013.

The second day of the 2013 Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am at Antalya GC in the Belek region of Turkey proved an incredible challenge as GB&I’s Chris Baron fought to card a three-over 71, taking the lead heading into the final round.

The second day’s play was notably drier than Day One, but conditions were by no means easier – 20-30 mph gusts across Antalya GC’s Pasha and Sultan courses meant that low scoring rounds were hard to come by.

But Baron clearly did something right as he hung on in his round with two birdies and an eagle to end with an even par total for the tournament with one round left.

Simon Edwards, also representing the PGA of GB&I, equalled Baron with the pair shooting the best rounds of the day, even after a shaky section late into the round, leaving Edwards just one shot behind.

Day One co-leader Zeke Martinez (PGA of Italy) might not have matched his opening round form having carded a nine-over 80, but hangs on in tie-third place alongside Turkey’s Bulent Karatas at five-over for the tournament.

The two-round Team competition came to an end with low-scoring individual of the day leading his team to victory in the fourball better-ball tournament with a points total of 165.

Day One individual co-leader Hakan Yamac and his team also held on through their second rounds to take second place in the team event with a total of 158 points, closely followed James Ferraby’s team with 157 points to finish in third.

Day Three sees the professionals and amateurs split up to play separate courses as the individual professional tournament culminates on Antalya GC’s PGA Sultan course.

————————

Golf is worth €15.1 billion annually to Europe’s economy a new study has revealed.

The report, produced by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. (SMS INC.) and commissioned by The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) and supported by other leading bodies including the European Tour and European Golf Association, highlights the importance of the golf industry across the continent.

The game’s impact is particularly significant in Great Britain & Ireland where it is valued at €6.1 billion – a total that accounts for 41 per cent of the European total.

Key economic findings across the 27 European Union nations plus Norway and Switzerland, which represent a combined population of 510 million, show the sport is responsible for a minimum of 180,000 full time jobs and employee wages of €4.4 billion.

And based on models employed by the Australian Golf Industry Council (2010) and Golf2020 in the USA (2011), the results show total expenditure per golfer throughout Europe of €1,911 which is in line with Australia (€1,917) and America (€2,007) golfing counterparts.

While the well-documented economic downturn has hit popular European golf destinations such as Spain and Portugal, golf tourism still contributes €1.5 billion of the annual impact.

On the course, the strength of the game matches the economic impact with eight men in the top 20 end of year world rankings and nine women in the top 50 of the Asian dominated standings.

International team success is exemplified with the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup all residing this side of the Atlantic.

PGA chief executive Sandy Jones commented: “Golf plays a significant role both in its economic impact and also in delivering social, behavioural and sporting benefits with the PGA professional firmly at the centre of the golf industry.

“In addition golf is also a huge contributor to charitable causes in Europe and last year generated more than €85 million supporting a range of good causes.”

A copy of the full report on The Economic Impact of Golf on the Economy of Europe is available at: http://bit.ly/WniTfk.

This report was produced with the support of the following organisations: The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA); The European Tour; The British and International Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA); The Club Managers Association of Europe (CMAE); The European Golf Association; The European Golf Course Owners Association (EGCOA); The European Institute of Golf Course Architects; Federation of European Golf Greenkeepers’ Association; European Golf Industry Association; Confederation of Professional Golf; England Golf; The Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU); and The Ladies’ Golf Union.

Conditions across the PGA Sultan and Pasha courses at Antalya GC had been up and down all week, but Edwards managed to come through the storms unscathed, carding a one-under par 213 total (70-74-69) around the Par-71 PGA Sultan course.

Edwards made a solid start in the penultimate nine holes arriving at the 10th hole lying one-over for the day and two-over for the tournament.

But fortune favoured the Welshman as he skillfully holed out from 123 yards for an eagle two, followed by six pars and a birdie-par finish to complete the 54-hole event as the only player under par.

“I played nicely this week,” said Edwards of his winning play. “Obviously you have to play good to win…and it’s good to play against quality players and keep my game in shape – I’m a club pro so this helps to keep sharp.”

Edwards continues his fine form from the 2012 season having also won in Turkey at the Confederation of Professional Golf 2012 BEKO Classic not far down the road at Cornelia Golf Club…

“I enjoy Turkey because of the quality of the courses and appreciate what you guys at Confederation of Professional Golf, John Dent and Mustafa at BEKO all do…It’s great to get the full set out here, Beko, Callister and now here at the Kempinski.”

Second place went to overnight leader representing the PGA of GB&I, Chris Baron, whose closing 74 wasn’t quite enough to keep up with Edwards, giving him a three-over par finish (69-74-74).

Two-shots back from Baron was the PGA of Sweden’s Jonathan Fransson, who closed his tournament with a two-under 69, equalling Edwards for the low rounds of the day, culminating in a five-over total for the week (73-77-69).

Turkey’s Bulent Karatas closed with a one-over 72 finishing on a six-over par total (69-79-72) for fourth place, whilst Day One’s co-leaders, Hakan Yamac (68-82-73) and Zeke Martinez (68-80-75), remained together on the final leaderboard both ending on a nine-over par total for a share of fifth place.

The two-round Team competition culminated with Day-Two’s low-scorer of the day, Chris Baron, leading his team to victory in the Fourball better-ball tournament with a points total of 165.

Day One individual co-leader Hakan Yamac and his team also held on through their second rounds to take second place in the team event with a total of 158 points, closely followed James Ferraby’s team with 157 points to finish in third.

John Dent, Director of Golf at Antalya Golf Club, said of the Pro-Am – “We had a fantastic strong line-up for the week the pros and amateurs enjoyed some great weather with a very testing second day…but both courses, the PGA Sultan and the Pasha, were in immaculate condition with the greens running at 11 on the stimp-meter. We hope the competitors enjoyed playing and saying at the wonderful surroundings of the Kempinski “The Dome” Hotel this week.”

Baron Battles in Windy Belek to Take Lead

Day One – Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am 2013 – Yamac and Martinez Lead the Way in Antalya

Day One of the 2013 Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am got underway to a damp and soggy start at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey, but that didn’t stop the tournament getting off to a great start, with two 68s leading the overnight scoring at four-under par.

Weather conditions for the first round of the annual Pro-Am left something to be desired as 30 teams got their initial rounds underway at Antalya Golf Club, but as always the courses did not disappoint giving way for some low scores and high spirits.

Turkish PGA member, Hakan Yamac, marched forward straight away with three birdies through the opening six holes of the round followed by two more at holes 10 and 13, however, a single blemish on the card with a bogey at 18 meant that Yamac wasn’t alone at the top of the leaderboard.

Italy’s Zeke Martinez had a more turbulent mid-section of his card with two bogeys, four birdies, and an eagle making up his four-under 68, clearly managing to maintain the form from last year having won the 2012 Aegean Airlines Pro-Am in Cyprus, leaving him in A-1 position moving into Day Two.

Whilst only five players managed sub-par rounds – the two leaders, Chris Baron & Bulent Karatas (-3), and Simon Edwards (-2) – the top-20 players all remain within touching distance at this early stage of play, so it’s up to Yamac and Martinez to capitalise on their early moves.

In the overall Team event, it’s the PGA of Spain’s James Ferraby’s team that already have a six-point advantage (90 points) over the tied-for-second teams of individual leader Hakan Yamac and Chris Baron (84 points) going into Day-Two.

2012 Tournament Review

A superb, one-blemish round of six-under-par 65 by CHRIS BARON (far right) earned him top prize of €4,000 in the Kempinski ‘The Dome’ Pro-Am at Antalya, Turkey, despite a challenging come-back by the first round leader, PHIL GOLDING.

Baron, a well-respected coach with 30 years PGA experience including spells as head professional at some of the world’s most prestigious resorts, turned up the heat on the third and final day with a round that was perfectly designed for the occasion.

After three holes he was already three under par as the field of pros returned to the PGA-bonded, par-71 Sultan course for the final shoot-out and a dropped shot at the fifth proved to be no more than a temporary irritation as he then reeled off some magical scoring.

A sequence of birdie-par, birdie-par, par-birdie swept him into the lead, one that he did not intend to waste. Seven safety-first pars then took him to the 18th where his grand finale was a birdie flourish to post a two-stroke lead over Golding.

Ulas Karatas had set the target at two over par with an excellent round of 70 but it was something of a switchback ride that took him into red figures for the day. Birdies, bogeys and pars went into his mix one after the other as he battled to steer a level course… until a three on the par four 15th sealed a good day’s work.

His leader-in-the-clubhouse role did not survive for long, however. Golding was soon to take over as the first-round leader all but wiped his second round slump off the slate with a seven-birdie round of 67 for a 54-hole total of 212, two under par.

Although he dropped a shot at the first and another at 12 he was never going to allow that second-day 77 to become a habit as his putter began to do the business again and the possibility of adding to his success in the 2011 Beko Classic was clearly in his sights.

Yet, well as Golding played, he was forced to settle for runner-up spot as ‘The Baron’ took centre stage. Among the sub-par scorers was Liam Bond. The Welshman’s round of 70 gave him third place on his own at level par for the 54 holes.

Wales’ Simon Edwards shot to victory in the 2013 Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am after firing a closing two-under par 69 secured a four shot victory over his rivals at Antalya Golf Club in Belek, Turkey.

The second day of the 2013 Kempinski “The Dome” Pro-Am at Antalya GC in the Belek region of Turkey proved an incredible challenge as GB&I’s Chris Baron fought to card a three-over 74, taking the lead heading into the final round.

“We are delighted to get this recognition from Golf Inc for PGA National Russia. We are anticipating the club will go from strength to strength this year and realise its potential as the number one golf facility in Russia” said Michael Braidwood, Operations Director of Braemar Golf, who manage the facility and who have worked with the client over the last 4 years on developing the golf club.

PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professionals, Paul Broadhurst and Robert Coles, have been crowned the 2014 Golfbreaks.com Confederation of Professional Golf Fourball Champions after a systematic final round six-under par 65 helped them to capitalise on their second round lead and take home the winners’ cheque for €6,000.

The pair looked to be a star attraction at the championship hosted once again by Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club, with numerous wins between them across successful careers and no less than 962 European Tour appearances combined. Both players proved their mettle with outstanding performances across both courses at Lumine to finish on an 18-under par total of 196.

“It’s brilliant – at the start of the week you see how many good players are playing and whether it’s a good field so to come top is fantastic,” said Coles, who was also victorious in the Confederation of Professional Golf-sanctioned 2013 Beko Classic at Gloria Golf Club, Turkey, in November.

“With this format you know there’s going to be a lot of birdies so the idea was for Rob to go off every tee first and get it in play to take the pressure off me,” explained ex-Ryder Cup player, Broadhurst. “Then hopefully I could get it in play and make a few putts. But my man here played solid all week, he took a lot of pressure off me – just by seeing a ball in the middle of every fairway. He drives it straighter than anyone I’ve ever played with.”

A Round 1 four-under 68 at the Hills course in windy conditions was followed by an eight-under par 63 on the Lakes course, befitting of their tactical play that would eventually see them sew up victory by one shot.

“We didn’t get off to a great start – I missed from three-feet for birdie and then I was hitting everything left for the first few holes…we were behind the guys we were playing with and then Rob kicked into gear and got a couple under. The back-nine played tough, once we’d turned back into the wind 15 and 16 were difficult and I managed to play those pretty good and Rob played the last pretty good for a one-shot victory,” added Broadhurst.

The event was this year supported by Golfbreaks.com enabling the prize fund to be boosted to €40,000 for the 42 teams that made the cut after Round 2, and was heavily supported by the Costa Daurada tourist board, as well as the local tourist offices of Cabrils, Salou, and La Pineda Pinja.

Both receiving €3,215 of this boosted prize fund were the PGA of Italy pairs that tied for second place – Gregory Molteni and Alessandro Tadini and fellow countrymen Andrea Zanini and Alessandro Grammatica. The pairs managed to match all three rounds’ scores with two-under par 70s around the Hills course, followed by Round 2 eight-under 63s and great third round efforts for seven-under par 64s each on the Lakes course.

Fourth place fell to the pair of Xavier Guzman and Xavier Pulg whose final round ten-under 61 wasn’t enough to bolster their first round 70 and second round 67, but did equal the low round of the tournament.

The Confederation of Professional Golf wish to thank Golfbreaks.com, Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club, the Costa Daurada, the local tourist boards of Cambrils, Salou, and La Pineda Platja, and hotel Tryp Port Cambrils, for all of their support in making the event a huge success.

Located on 170 acres, Lumine Golf Club’s two 18-hole courses, the Greg Norman designed Lakes Course, and the white-pine-lined Hills Course, will host the championship for the second year after rave reviews from last year’s competitors. Winding its way around the picturesque Sèquia Major wetlands, the Lakes course bears all the hallmarks of the Great White Shark and is undoubtedly the most testing of the resorts three courses. A links-style championship layout, it features several water hazards and tests all aspects of the game. Located within 170 acres, LUMINE Golf Club also includes the more traditional Hills Course, a second 18-hole championship course that runs through pine and olive trees with spectacular views of the nearby coastline.
