The Lifetime Achievement Award this year went to Tony Jacklin CBE for his efforts and success in driving the game forward, and arguably providing the catalyst for the development of European golf as it is today.

Jacklin spoke passionately about his Ryder Cup experiences, as well as his great friend Severiano Ballesteros, who was posthumously awarded the same award, collected by Seve’s Brother, Vicente Ballesteros, at last year’s emotional Congress Gala Dinner.

The awards also included the presentation of the ‘President’s Grow the Game Award’ to Fellow of the PGA of GB&I and advanced PGA Professional, Peter Ball, whose efforts in developing the game throughout his early career in the Midlands and latterly in Sheffield, were worthy of reward.

The John Jacobs Coach of the Year award was given to Dominique Larretche for his embodiment of the same standards and skills that made John Jacobs a world-renowned coach, including Larretche’s involvement in a teaching, coaching and training programme that is used across 30 different clubs and 50 golf professionals.

The Special Recognition Award this year went to long-time friend of the association, Leif Ohlsson, for his incredible dedication and work in promoting the values of the Confederation of Professional Golf. Having served as a Director on the Confederation of Professional Golf Board and Education Committee, Ohlsson has been involved and aided golf in Sweden and across Europe for over 20 years.

The 5 Star Professional Award winner, nominated by their peers for embodying the many and varied elements that go into making a PGA Professional, was John Barnett. Barnett has excelled in playing, leadership, education and coaching, and administration of the game, and in his 36th year of being the professional at Royal St Davids, it was fitting that he be recognised.

An award that is very close to the hearts of the Confederation of Professional Golf is the Christer Lindberg Bowl, which recognises people who have made a significant contribution to the game in the name of the first Confederation of Professional Golf Chairman, Christer Lindberg.

Previous winners include the Solheim family, George O’Grady, and Annika Sorrenstam, and joining this illustrious list – the first company to do so – is Glenmuir.

Their continued service to professional golf, as well as in the amateur game, across Europe has been noted multiple times this year, including at 40,000 feet by the Ryder Cup Captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, and the Confederation of Professional Golf brought them back to terra firma in Portugal with the awarding of this treasured prize to Managing Director of Glenmuir, Colin Mee.

For 23 years the Confederation of Professional Golf has staged the Annual Congress to give a chance for it’s Member countries, as well as representatives from multiple golfing bodies, from Europe and further afield, to meet and share ideas and knowledge.

The Congress, supported by Glenmuir and the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve, featured numerous presentations and workshops guided by the themes of leadership of associations and their members, together with a focus towards strategic planning, ensuring associations are planning for the future and can lead their organisations and professionals toward it.

The four-day Congress, which ran alongside the International Team Championship hosted at Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort, included speakers such as Confederation of Professional Golf Director and former Chief Executive of the European Tour, Ken Schofield, speaking on his experience of 19 Ryder Cup matches; General Secretary of the European Golf Association, Richard Heath, detailing the EGA’s own strategic plan; as well as the great honour of hosting European Ryder Cup legend, Tony Jacklin, for a Q&A session with Confederation of Professional Golf Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

Ending the week was the Annual Congress and ITC Gala Dinner in which the Team Champions, Scotland, were crowned winners, receiving their trophies from Ian Randell, Managing Director of Glenmuir, Colin Mee, and Maria Manuel Delgado e Silva, Golf Product Manger for the Associação Turismo do Algarve, alongside the Confederation of Professional Golf awards as well.

Closing the 2012 Annual Congress, Sandy Jones, Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf and Chief Executive of the PGA of GB&I, said:

“Everyone tonight, and everyone this week, you are the inspiration in golf, and you are the inspiration back in your own countries…And that is so important for the game and for the work of the Confederation of Professional Golf, because it’s that that will guarantee the great journey Tony Jacklin started is carried on by generations of players to come.”

Finally, delegates, players and guests were treated to a stunning Ryder Cup highlights video reminding all those attending of the influence that the Ryder Cup has had in the evolution of the game in Europe, ending the Congress on an inspirational high note.

Golf stand is the working title, which in full reads The European Occupational Standards for Golf, promoted by Skills Active, with the strong support of The Confederation of Professional Golf and the European Observatoire of Sport and Employment (EOSE). The 16 partner strong consortium brought together national and EU organisations from ten different member states involved in the golf, wider sports and education sectors. Golfing bodies included, the PGAs of GB&I, Sweden, Germany and Italy, Netherlands Golf Association, the European Golf Course Owners Association, Club Managers Association of Europe through the Association of Golf Course Managers of Portugal and FEGGA through the Slovenian Greenkeepers’ Association. Public authorities concerned with education and sport were also represented in the partnership, with the national qualifications authorities of Scotland and Malta along with the University of Birmingham and the national sports schools of Sweden (Boson) and Finland (Vierumaki).

It is anticipated that the Golf Stand project outcomes will assist employers to better identify staffing needs, develop appropriate job descriptions, fine tune the interview selection process and have greater appreciation of the skills, knowledge and attributes that staff are able to bring to a specific work role. This in turn will allow employers to position their staff in an appropriate role to gain maximum benefit for the business and at the same time help employees to engage in satisfying work.

For many employees in the workforce the opportunity to progress their career is an important consideration. The Golf Stand outcomes provide a clear and comprehensive guide to the competences relevant to a specific work role (occupation) and just as importantly offer a map for the skills, knowledge and attributes that will be needed for the next stage of a chosen career pathway.

Furthermore The Confederation of Professional Golf have already started to integrate many of the findings to even further strengthen and shape the quality of the European Standard for Professional Education that has been used for recognition of training programmes for more than 20 years across the Association and is accepted as the industry standard across the 39 Member Countries.

In a long and illustrious career, Jacklin has exemplified what European Professional golf is all about, known by some as the Arnold Palmer of Europe for his contributions to making the game what it is today. His class, style and elegance out on the golf course lead him to become something of a record-breaker throughout his career:

• He was the first Briton to win on the PGA Tour;
• The first British player in 18 years to win the Open Championship;
• A year later he became the first Brit since Ted Ray in 1920 to win the US Open (The only U.S. Open victory by a European player in an 84-year span (1926–2009) until Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell ended that streak in 2010)
• He was the first player since Ben Hogan to hold both the Open Championship and US Open trophies at the same time

Having accumulated a great number of tour victories and Ryder Cup victories as a player himself, he moved on to captaining Team Europe, narrowly losing in 1983, but capturing the first European victory in 28 years in 1985, followed by the first Team Europe win on American soil in 87, culminating with the first European retention of the trophy in 1989. He injected leadership that has resulted in the stunning European performances that have been seen in recent years.

Jacklin was instrumental in ensuring not only the Ryder Cup, in which his ‘demands’ for his teams created a new precedent within the matches and ensured Europe were on a level playing field with the United States from then on, but also that the perception of European golf in general was positive and boosted to what it has become today.

The 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award was given posthumously to Severiano Ballesteros, which was collected by his Seve’s brother, Vicente Ballesteros, at an incredibly emotional Congress dinner, and Jacklin took time to speak about his great friend during his acceptance speech:

“I first heard about Seve when travelling to the La Manga Club with Gary Player…we somehow came across Manuel Ballesteros, and he started to tell us about this brother he had who was incredible, and of course it was a couple of years on from there when he made that audacious chip on the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale…and went on three years later from the car park to win his first Open Championship in ’79.”

“I remember saying to him [Seve] at that point ‘It’s a lot easier from the fairway Seve’. He said I didn’t understand, but I said I did ‘but it’s still easier to get it done’…they were great times and of course we were all saddened by his passing.”

On receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Jacklin said: “I’m very pleased to accept this award from the Confederation of Professional Golf, and I wish you continued success. I suppose the Ryder Cups in part were responsible for bringing you all together and I’m very grateful for that too.”

The Chief Executive of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Ian Randell, presented the award to an understandably shocked Colin Mee, Managing Director of Glenmuir, as he himself had no idea of the nomination and subsequent selection.

“It’s been a bit of a surreal year…this tops it all, it’s wonderful. Glenmuir are very much steeped in golf – at all levels of the game we support the amateur bodies, professional bodies right through to the Ryder Cup”, Mee said.

“Listening to the names that are associated with this trophy, I feel quite humbled and I accept the award on behalf of Glenmuir with a huge degree of thanks.”

The Christer Lindberg Bowl is of great importance to the Confederation of Professional Golf as it has been a long-standing award to recognise people who have made a significant contribution to the game in the name of the first Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Christer Lindberg.

Some past winners of the award include influential figures such as George O’Grady, Peter Dawson, Annika Sorrenstam, the Solheim Family, and Confederation of Professional Golf board member, Ken Schofield, but this is the first time a company has won this prestigious accolade.

Having already received a noted award for 25 years service to the Ryder Cup at nearly 40,000 feet off the ground on the way to Medinah Country Club, from Ryder Cup Team Europe Captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, Glenmuir were brought back to terra firma in Portugal with an award that acknowledges their support of not only the Ryder Cup but also the Confederation of Professional Golf, our national PGAs, PGA Professionals and in fact, their support of golf as a whole.

Ball has a career spanning more than 30 years, coaching and developing the game in the Midlands region of the United Kingdom and latterly in the City of Sheffield, including working with a range of young people, women and girls, people with disabilities, as well as coaching elite-level players.

His efforts in designing development programmes were the first in the UK to promote the inclusion of golf within the National Curriculum, and he is also known for his work piloting the English Junior Golf Development Scheme in the 1990s, all helping to lay the groundwork for much of the advancement of the game throughout the United Kingdom.

In 2003 he was the recipient of the ‘Sir Henry Cotton Award’ for meritorious service to junior golf and it is a testament to his continued dedication and enthusiasm for the game that almost 10 years later he is once again being recognised for his efforts.

The coach was presented with his award at this year’s Confederation of Professional Golf Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner, hosted at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, on Portugal’s Algarve:

“I would like to thank the many golf professionals, teachers, volunteers without whose help this award would not have been possible,” Ball said.

“As Coaches, we never know the lasting effect we have on young people, or the impact that is felt by their family, and for this I am very proud to be a PGA golf coach”.

Ball was described by the PGA of GB&I, the body that nominated him for the award, as truly representing the ‘heart of golf’ by being an introducer, a promoter and a coach of the game, making him fully deserving of the award.

The award, presented at this year’s host venue, Hotel Vila Galé Lagos in Portgual, looks to acknowledge the efforts of coaches who are exemplary of the same standards that have put the great John Jacobs OBE in the history books as one of the greatest coaches of all time to professionals and amateurs alike.

Larretche was nominated by the PGA of France a having these traits and exhibiting these standards as one of France’s best coaches.

Beginning his coaching career at the age of 20 at International Golf Club du Lys near Paris, France, Larretche worked as a coach at numerous courses across the country, as well as being involved in many coaching and teaching programmes, including one such programme that is used across 30 different clubs and 50 golf professionals.

His success as a coach has lead to multiple Amateur success with a great number of French players, as well as in the professional ranks coaching winners across all tours, including recent success with European Tour player, Victor Dubuisson, who shot a record-breaking 62 on the Old Course at St Andrews in this year’s Dunhill Links Championship.

As well as being noted for his coaching, Larretche has had a hand to play in administering the game, with a spell as President of the PGA of France in 1997 and 1998, and is well-known for his commentating on the PGA Tour, Ryder Cup and major championships for Canal+ Television.

Larretche was presented with his award by retiring Honorary Confederation of Professional Golf President, and longtime friend, Jean-Etienne Lafitte, saying:

“It is a great honour for me to receive the John Jacobs award – I am very proud. It was thirty years ago when I was a young coach and I had the opportunity to spend 3 weeks with John Jacobs…it was a great experience for me. One day John said to me ‘Dominique do you like golf?’ I said I liked golf it’s my passion it’s my life. ‘Learn it. Learn, Learn, learn’ he said. I learn with my team…in teaching…and as a commentator…I learn from the best players and coaches in the world – it’s fantastic for me.”

Larretche also noted the influence of his friend Lafitte and dedicated the award to the Confederation of Professional Golf past Honorary President.

The Special Recognition Award looks to honour an individual for their work and dedication in promoting the values of the Confederation of Professional Golf, and there was no better recipient this year than the Swede who has had such an effect on golf in Europe.

Ohlsson’s presence on the Confederation of Professional Golf Board of Directors, and as Chairman of the Education committee, has spanned over 20 years and it is almost too difficult to mention all of the differing projects and initiatives he has had a hand in developing and implementing for the good of the game in Sweden and across the continent.

Speaking at the Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner, where he received his award from Confederation of Professional Golf Chief Executive, Ian Randell, and Vice-Chairman, Mikael Sorling, Ohlsson said:

“It’s an honour to have received this award…for me a circle has been closed. It started in 1978 with the PGA of Sweden, and Christer Lindberg asked me to modernize the education programme for professionals. My background was in sports science…so what I tried to do at that time was look at golf as a sport and introduce what we know in all other sports…It was a bit of a cultural revolution.

“I was also picked by Christer to join the Confederation of Professional Golf…it was the first time I had worked with so many people from different countries. During that time I have met so many dedicated people…people who had the will to do something and the endurance to fulfill it. 20 years later we have seen the result – we have a more unified Europe in golf…a better common standard of education – it is so different.”

There was no doubt amongst the Board of Directors’ minds that Ohlsson will have helped influence almost all of the education programmes that exist across the Confederation of Professional Golf member PGAs, driven by his passion for education and desire to share his knowledge.

The 5-Star Professional Award looks to honour an individual that is an outstanding example of what makes a great PGA Professional, embodying the values of the PGA and excelling in many of the varied aspects that make up being a PGA Professional.

Barnett is no exception to this having shone in the fields of tournament play, captaincy and leadership, education and coaching, Distinguished and innovative administration, as well as aiding golf development.

Just a few of his achievements include his tournament play in which he qualified for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1975, and then won two Welsh Seniors Championships in 2001 and 2007; his contribution to the professional game being Chairman of the PGA of GB&I North Region Committee for 10 years, followed by his two years as Captain of the PGA of GB&I, as well becoming Captain of the PGA in Wales in 2001; his contribution to Wales as a whole in aiding the selection of Celtic Manor as the 2010 Ryder Cup host venue; as well as being at the heart of Royal St. David’s Golf Club in Wales for 35 years.

“I had a bit of a shock when I got the email about this award, so I’d just like to make a few thank you’s” Barnett said. “I’d like to thank Royal St David’s for putting up with me for nearly 36 years…I’d like to thank my wife…Andrew who played today [in the ITC], and Jane my daughter – thank you all very much for this wonderful honour.”

The variation and impact of Barnett’s contribution means he is a deserving winner of the award, made even more special by the fact he was nominated by his peers at the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland.

Having led the Glenmuir-sponsored tournament from the start, albeit in tandem with England on day one, the Scots increased their dominance as it unfolded.

Or they did until to the final round over the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort.

Then, with a challenge from England or France, who were second and third respectively overnight, failing to materialise, the Scots did not have to move through the gears to claim the €6,000 winner’s cheque.

Five clear of the 25-strong field at the beginning of the day, the Scots had almost doubled their advantage when David Orr was left with a tap in for par at the 18th hole.

That left them 16-under-par for the tournament, the same total they had ended round three.

But with England and France effectively going backwards and Holland left with too much to do after starting the round a dozen shots adrift, there was never any danger of the Scots snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

All of which made the forecast of French captain Benjamin Nicolay prior to the final round spot on.

“Scotland will be tough to beat,” said Nicolay, who led the French to victory last year. “I think we’ll be fighting for second place now.”

In the event France had to settle for fourth place, 10 strokes behind the Scots, and he was right on both counts.

While England and Holland, inspired by sub-par rounds from Robin Swane and Ralph Miller, scrapped for the runner’s up birth and ended up sharing it, Scotland strengthened their grip on the trophy.

And they did so without having to produce the high-octane golf that had lit up their first three rounds.

Then Orr and Gareth Wright had hogged the limelight, this time it was David Patrick’s turn.

His one-under-par 71 was the pick of the Scottish trio and typified what Orr believes is their strength.

“We’re all very good golfers but we dovetail well as a team,” he said. “That was apparent today and has been all week as we’ve all played our part.

Seven sub par rounds and another two in regulation out of the dozen the Scots played was evidence of the consistency.

Equally important for Orr was the experience of his trio.

“We’ve got more than 200 Challenge Tour and 50 European Tour appearances between us and that helped us today,” he explained.

“Once we’d gone five clear at the end of the third round, I was more relaxed because I felt we had the experience and know-how to see the job through.”

Scotland’s victory also ended a six-year famine in the competition, their last success coming in 2006 a year after Orr won a Europro Challenge Tour tournament at the same venue.

“The course has been revamped since then and is a lot different now,” he added. “But I’ve always had fond memories of the place and they’re even fonder now.”

Denmark’s Danny Jorgensen is another who will go away from Onyria Palmares with fond memories after a hole-in-one at the par three second. As he will Portugal.

“It was the third of my career,” he said, “and two of them have been in Portugal.

“I took a five-iron and I saw the ball bounce before rolling into the hole. Obviously I was delighted, especially as it helped me produce my best round of the week.”

Meanwhile, three players shared the honours in terms of the best individual performances over the four rounds: Swane, Wright and England’s Stuart Little all ended the week six-under-par.

The final day of the Annual Congress consisted initially of a session with performance coach Jamie Edwards, in which he looked at the role that momentum played on the final day of the 2012 Ryder Cup and how this could specifically relate back to golf, as well as more generally in business and leadership.

After a break the delegates were treated to the second Q&A session of the week, this time with Ryder Cup and European golf legend, Tony Jacklin.

Jacklin took the delegates through his own trials and tribulations when playing in Europe and then onto making his way across the pond to play in the United States. He then looked at how his success in the game as a player lead to his success as a Ryder Cup captain and a leader, as well as the overall effect this has had on the game in Europe.

Luckily for all those attending this was not the last time in the day they would have a chance to hear from the record-breaking Briton.

Jacklin was awarded the highest honour at this year’s Annual Congress and ITC Gala Dinner – receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts and success in driving the game forward and arguably providing the catalyst for the development of golf as it is today – and once again spoke passionately about his Ryder Cup experiences, as well as his great friend Severiano Ballesteros, who was posthumously awarded the same award at last year’s emotional Congress Gala Dinner.

The evening featured multiple other awards for individuals that have been inspirational in the game:

• John Jacbos Coach of the Year Award – Dominique Larretche
• Special recognition Award – Leif Ohlsson
• 5 Star Professional Award – John Barnett
• Christer Lindberg Bowl – Glenmuir

To finish off the evening, Confederation of Professional Golf Chairman, Sandy Jones, gave a speech of thanks and congratulations to all those attending the Congress and ITC and the evening was topped off with a hihglights film of this year’s vEuropean Ryder Cup victory at Medinah to ensure everyone ended their week on a very high note.

Scotland in Seventh Heaven on the Algarve

Scotland turned the final round of The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship on Portugal’s Algarve into a victory procession to win the competition for a seventh time.

Having led the Glenmuir-sponsored tournament from the start, albeit in tandem with England on day one, the Scots increased their dominance as it unfolded.

Or they did until to the final round over the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort.

Then, with a challenge from England or France, who were second and third respectively overnight, failing to materialise, the Scots did not have to move through the gears to claim the €6,000 winner’s cheque.

Five clear of the 25-strong field at the beginning of the day, the Scots had almost doubled their advantage when David Orr was left with a tap in for par at the 18th hole.

That left them 16-under-par for the tournament, the same total they had ended round three.

But with England and France effectively going backwards and Holland left with too much to do after starting the round a dozen shots adrift, there was never any danger of the Scots snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

All of which made the forecast of French captain Benjamin Nicolay prior to the final round spot on.

“Scotland will be tough to beat,” said Nicolay, who led the French to victory last year. “I think we’ll be fighting for second place now.”

In the event France had to settle for fourth place, 10 strokes behind the Scots, and he was right on both counts.

While England and Holland, inspired by sub-par rounds from Robin Swane and Ralph Miller, scrapped for the runner’s up birth and ended up sharing it, Scotland strengthened their grip on the trophy.

And they did so without having to produce the high-octane golf that had lit up their first three rounds.

Then Orr and Gareth Wright had hogged the limelight, this time it was David Patrick’s turn.

His one-under-par 71 was the pick of the Scottish trio and typified what Orr believes is their strength.

“We’re all very good golfers but we dovetail well as a team,” he said. “That was apparent today and has been all week as we’ve all played our part.

Seven sub par rounds and another two in regulation out of the dozen the Scots played was evidence of the consistency.

Equally important for Orr was the experience of his trio.

“We’ve got more than 200 Challenge Tour and 50 European Tour appearances between us and that helped us today,” he explained.

“Once we’d gone five clear at the end of the third round, I was more relaxed because I felt we had the experience and know-how to see the job through.”

Scotland’s victory also ended a six-year famine in the competition, their last success coming in 2006 a year after Orr won a Europro Challenge Tour tournament at the same venue.

“The course has been revamped since then and is a lot different now,” he added. “But I’ve always had fond memories of the place and they’re even fonder now.”

Denmark’s Danny Jorgensen is another who will go away from Onyria Palmares with fond memories after a hole-in-one at the par three second. As he will Portugal.

“It was the third of my career,” he said, “and two of them have been in Portugal.

“I took a five-iron and I saw the ball bounce before rolling into the hole. Obviously I was delighted, especially as it helped me produce my best round of the week.”

Meanwhile, three players shared the honours in terms of the best individual performances over the four rounds: Swane, Wright and England’s Stuart Little all ended the week six-under-par.

Captain Orr Keeps Scotland on Course for Victory

David Orr (below) played the part of Captain Marvel to perfection as Scotland intensified their dominance of The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship on Portugal’s Algarve.

Three strokes clear at the start of the penultimate round, the Scots had almost doubled their advantage at the end of it thanks to Orr’s tour de force display and another sub-par round from Gareth Wright.

With one round of the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort to negotiate, Scotland are five strokes clear of England and seven ahead of France, the defending champions.

All of which means the €6,000 winner’s cheque is the Scots to lose on the final day.

“It’s a great position to be in,” admitted Orr after sinking a birdie putt at the par four 18th to card a five-under-par 67.

The way Orr completed his round, with a short putt that followed an exquisite backspin-laden pitch, was at odds with an inauspicious bogey, bogey start.

“I three-putted the first and then bogeyed the second,” he added. “But I played almost flawless golf after that. I had seven birdies in the last 16 holes and it’s fair to say I left a couple more shots out there.”

Orr’s round was Scotland’s best of the tournament thus far, eclipsing the 68 Wright posted in the first round.

Wright followed that with a 69 before weighing in with a one-under-par 71 to remain the tournament’s leading individual, one ahead of England’s Stuart Little and two clear of Orr.

David Patrick, the third member of the Scottish trio who had a rare off day, lies joint 11th in the individual rankings and Orr stressed: “It’s been a real team effort to get this far.

“We dovetail very well and the fact that we finished third, fourth and fifth in the Scottish region’s Order of Merit reflects that.”

Little, meanwhile, kept England’s faltering hopes of victory alive with a four-under-par 68.

It also ensured England remain in second place, a position that could be under threat from the French for whom Benjamin Nikolay (pictured, right) produced a real captain’s display as well as the round of the tournament so far.

The French lie third on seven-under for the tournament, four strokes adrift of England after Nikolay, who led them to victory last year, posted a six-under-par round of 66.

“I’m very happy with that,” said Nikolay following a round that featured seven birdies and a solitary blemish – at the 11th.

“We certainly needed it. Now we have to duplicate it again tomorrow to stand any chance of winning.”

Nikolay admitted, however, it will be very difficult to cancel out Scotland’s nine stroke lead.

“Scotland will be tough to beat,” he added. “I think we’re fighting for second place now.”

Scotland turned up the heat in The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship by putting daylight between themselves and the rest of the field at the halfway stage.

The Scottish trio had begun the second round sharing pole position with England after negotiating the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort on Portugal’s Algarve in seven-under-par.

Come the end of it, however, Gareth Wright, David Patrick and David Orr had claimed sole occupation after establishing a three-stroke advantage over the rest of the 25-strong field.

Patrick and Orr both carded level par rounds of 72 while Wright was Scotland’s main man for the second day running as they boosted their chances of earning the €6,000 first prize.

Wright, who won the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at England’s Carden Park in the summer, reprised his first round form by posting a three-under-par 69.

And, as well as accounting for the difference that now separates the Scots and the English, Wright’s round was also the joint best round of the day.

He shared that distinction with Portugal’s Nelson Cavalheiro but did so after overcoming an inauspicious start that saw him bogey the first hole.

A birdie at the 358 yard fifth erased that rare blemish before Wright moved into overdrive on the back nine and posted three more.

England, by contrast, fell away in the back nine after establishing a two-shot advantage over the Scots during the outward half.

The left-handed Stuart Little (pictured above), who posted 71, was the only one of the trio to break par while Steve Parry, whose opening day 67 remains the best of the tournament to date, carded 73.

Craig Shave, the team’s third member, also posted a one-over par 73 to give England a two-round total of 281.

As well losing ground to the Scots in their bid to win the Glenmuir-sponsored tournament, the six stroke advantage they enjoyed over third place has been reduced to five following a superb day for the Dutch.

Inspired by English-born PGA professional Ralph Miller and Robin Swane, who both posted two-under par rounds of 70, the Netherlands’ combined total of 140 was the best of the day.

Their two-day total of 286 also leaves them as one of just four teams under par at the halfway point; defending champions France, for whom Jean Pierre Cixous posted 70, complete the quartet on 287.

England and Scotland Set the Standard

England and Scotland moved swiftly into overdrive on Portugal’s Algarve and turned the opening round of The Confederation of Professional Golf International Team Championship into the equivalent of a domestic skirmish.

The two trios negotiated the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort in seven-under-par to leave their pursuers in the 25-strong field playing catch up in the chase for the €6,000 winner’s cheque.

At the end of the first of four rounds, catch-up for third-placed Ireland means eradicating a deficit of six strokes.

South Africa lie a shot behind while defending champions France face an even taller order: Benjamin Nikolay’s team share fifth place with Germany, a shot further adrift.

With the best two of the three scores counting, Steve Parry (67) led the way for England and was supported by Stuart Little and Craig Shave who both posted 70.

Meanwhile, Gareth Wright (68) proved Scotland’s inspiration while David Patrick weighed in with 69 and David Orr finished one-under on 71.

Parry was responsible for the best round of the day: a five-under-par return that featured an eagle on the 462 yard 15th.

Wright also carded an eagle – on the 496 yard 13th. For Scotland’s trail-blazer, however, it was very much a case of what might have been.

“To be honest, although it’s a good score, I’m a bit disappointed,” admitted Wright, the Glenmuir PGA Professional Champion.

“I missed a short putt for an eagle on the 15th and another on the 17th. There were also a couple of putts that horse-shoed and several other short ones didn’t drop. I was striking the ball well from tee to green and it could have been really silly if my putting had matched my approach play.

Wright, along with his two compatriots, is making his debut in the Glenmuir sponsored event and, in contrast to his self-criticism, he was fulsome in his praise for the venue.

“The course is fantastic,” he added. “It’s in great condition and great to play on. It’s very fair and rewards you if you are playing well.”

Teams Ready Themselves for Confederation of Professional Golf 2012 International Team Championship

With less than a week to go until the Confederation of Professional Golf 2012 International Team Championship, teams from all across Europe are readying themselves for what should be a stunning test of golf at the Alvor course at Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort, in the Western part of Portugal’s Algarve region.

Supported by Glenmuir, Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve, Hotel Vila Galé Lagos and Ryder Cup European Development Trust, the tournament will feature 25 teams from the far reaches of the continent competing for the €35,000 prize fund, playing a 72-hole strokeplay competition with the best two individual scores from the Team of three counting towards the overall Team score.

Last year’s Champions, France, return to the tournament to defend their title, however, with a different venue in play than that of 2011’s hosts Vale do Lobo, it is a tough tournament to call, as each of the teams are represented by some of the nationalities’ most outstanding professional players.

Parry ‘chuffed’ to play for England

It’s a great honour, he says…

Steve Parry admits he’s “chuffed to bits” to represent England in next week’s European International Team Championship at the Palmares Beach Resort in Portugal.

The 34-year-old Bolton-born professional, who runs his own golf academy at Westhoughton club Hart Common, earned his place in the three-man side for finishing third in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at De Vere Carden Park in August.

“It’s a great honour,” said former Leeds Cup winner Parry who will be joined in Portugal by former European Tour player Stuart Little, who’s attached to Minchinhampton, and Leicestershire’s Craig Shave.

“The only time I’ve played for my country was in the English Schools’ Championship as a lad,” he recalled.

England finished fourth at Vale do Lobo last year, 11shots adrift of winners France, in an event that attracts 26 teams.

“Hopefully we can do better this time and add further sporting glory to a summer littered with British sporting success,” added Parry, who this season finished second in the PGA North Region Order of Merit which he won two years ago.

His success in the Glenmuir also qualified him to play in the European UniCredit PGA Professional Championship of Europe in Bulgaria in September where he shared 11th place.

Four days of action start at Palmares on Tuesday.

The event, supported by Glenmuir and the Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve, taking place at Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, in the Algarve region of Portugal, has so far enjoyed the company of many well-known presenters and industry professionals who have had the opportunity to pass on their knowledge to the gathering of delegates.

Day one saw Founder and President of Catalyst Branding, David Martin, present on the 9 principles that make up the PGA brand; Ken Schofield, current Confederation of Professional Golf board member and former Chief Executive of the European Tour, showcase his astounding memory for his experiences at an incredible 19 Ryder Cups.; Nikola Smoljenovic, the General Secretary of the PGA of Croatia, giving his account of the recent Initial Professional Education (IPE) programme in Croatia; as well as an explanation from Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education, Tony Bennett, about the recently completed Golf Stand European Occupational Standards for Golf project.

Day Two of the Congress consisted of the ‘President’s Challenge Golf Day’ hosted at Boavista Golf Club, designed to mix up the delegates and ensure they get to know those that they are spending time with over the week, as well as adding an element of competition for a group of individuals that all share the same passion for the game.

A rousing performance by the President’s team, this year represented by past-president, Ken Schofield, prevented the trophy from entering the hands of the Confederation of Professional Golf Chairman, Sandy Jones, and his team.

Back to business on day three, delegates enjoyed presentations on Social Media, strategic planning from Richard Heath of the European Golf Association, the intricacies of developing an association from Club Inc.’s Niall Flanagan, as well as from founding father of resort golf on the Algarve, André Jordan.

Closing the penultimate day of the Congress was son of renowned course designer Howard Swan, William Swan, whose enlightening presentation on the challenges faced by the industry in terms of growth and participation included the thinking behind ‘FirstGolf’ – an initiative that attempts to tackle these issues using the adaptation of existing facilities, as well as with the development of new facilities that incorporate short courses, and differing practice facilities.

The final day of the Congress will surely provide a treat for delegates in the form of performance coach Jamie Edwards, speaking on the role of momentum in leading world class education, as well as with the arrival of Tony Jacklin CBE to the Congress for a Q&A session with the delegates on his role in developing the game in Europe.

Day Two of the Congress consisted of the ‘President’s Challenge Golf Day’ hosted at Boavista Golf Club, just a short drive away from the Congress’ host venue, Hotel Vila Galé Lagos.

The second day is designed to mix up the delegates and ensure they get to know those that they are spending time with over the week, as well as adding an element of competition for a group of individuals that all share the same passion for the game.

A rousing performance by the President’s team, this year represented by past-president, Ken Schofield, prevented the trophy from entering the hands of the Confederation of Professional Golf Chairman, Sandy Jones, and his team.

Day three of the Congress was back to business, with the second full day of presentations, workshops and discussion groups, with once again an array of subject matter on the table.

First on stage was Surekha Parekh, Worldwide Marketing & Social Media Program Director for Information Management System z at IBM, discussing the differing channels and platforms within Social Media and how its use can be as effective as possible.

Parekh’s presentation ignited discussion amongst the delegates about the merits of Social Media use, as well as it’s pitfalls and dangers, but consensus from the floor was that with the changing world of communications it was vital they keep up or otherwise they will be left behind.

Next to the stage was General Secretary of the European Golf Association (EGA), Richard Heath, with a nod to Day One’s subject matter, with a presentation on the EGA’s Strategic Plan and how it sees itself evolving over time having this week celebrated their 75th anniversary.

Following a short break was Niall Flanagan, Managing Director of Confederation of Professional Golf Career Services Partners, Club Inc., using his vast experience in sitting on and maintaining boards of directors to provoke discussion as to why an association needs it’s members and those that ensure the continued growth and development of the association.

Flanagan’s presentation also included breakout group work in which delegates worked together to discuss the values and requirements of an effective golf association as well as where they view their own associations being in the future.

After lunch, delegates were treated to a speech from André Jordan, Chairman of the André Jordan group, one of the founding fathers of golf resorts in the Algarve and further afield.

Jordan detailed his experiences in developing these resorts and how his business has evolved, and answered questions from the floor on how golf tourism will evolve in the coming years, as well as about his own approaches in the early stages of his business career and the realisation of his visionary approaches.

A short presentation from Confederation of Professional Golf Director of Education, Tony Bennett, detailed the ways in which companies have previously allowed themselves to fall behind the times and fail to evolve with changes in culture and technology, highlighting the importance for PGAs and their pros in ensuring they stay current and always look ahead to how they can stay relevant.

Closing the penultimate day of the conference was William Swan, from Swan Golf Designs and son of renowned golf course designer, Howard Swan, speaking on his and the company’s passion for the future of golf facilities.

Swan looked into the challenges faced by the industry in terms of growth and participation and then suggested how these might be tackled using concepts based around the adaptation of existing facilities to the modern game, as well as with the development of new facilities that incorporate short course, and differing practice facilities.

Day three culminated in looking ahead to the final day of the Congress that will see performance coach Jamie Edwards present, followed by Ryder Cup legend Tony Jacklin taking part in a Q&S session to close the Congress.

The two trios negotiated the Alvor Course at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort in seven-under-par to leave their pursuers in the 25-strong field playing catch up in the chase for the €6,000 winner’s cheque.

At the end of the first of four rounds, catch-up for third-placed Ireland means eradicating a deficit of six strokes.

South Africa lie a shot behind while defending champions France face an even taller order: Benjamin Nikolay’s team share fifth place with Germany, a shot further adrift.

With the best two of the three scores counting, Steve Parry (67) led the way for England and was supported by Stuart Little and Craig Shave who both posted 70.

Meanwhile, Gareth Wright (68) proved Scotland’s inspiration while David Patrick weighed in with 69 and David Orr finished one-under on 71.

Parry was responsible for the best round of the day: a five-under-par return that featured an eagle on the 462 yard 15th.

Wright also carded an eagle – on the 496 yard 13th. For Scotland’s trail-blazer, however, it was very much a case of what might have been.

“To be honest, although it’s a good score, I’m a bit disappointed,” admitted Wright, the Glenmuir PGA Professional Champion.

“I missed a short putt for an eagle on the 15th and another on the 17th. There were also a couple of putts that horse-shoed and several other short ones didn’t drop. I was striking the ball well from tee to green and it could have been really silly if my putting had matched my approach play.

Wright, along with his two compatriots, is making his debut in the Glenmuir sponsored event and, in contrast to his self-criticism, he was fulsome in his praise for the venue.

“The course is fantastic,” he added. “It’s in great condition and great to play on. It’s very fair and rewards you if you are playing well.”

Day One of the Congress began with a welcome message from Chief Executive of the Confederation of Professional Golf, Ian Randell, following a highlights package from this year’s Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Chicago:

“It’s been a pretty memorable year for European sport and European golf, and all of us in this room have got a lot to be proud of in the performance of the European Team with so many countries represented, and it is part of what the Confederation of Professional Golf is all about – in the same way the Ryder Cup does – it brings all of Europe together, and some of international colleagues as well.”

The first speaker of the day was Managing Director of the PGA of Sweden, Mikael Sorling, whose insights and expertise from his administrative experiences, as well as from his time as Vice Chairman of the Confederation of Professional Golf, were put to use in explaining the development of a Strategic Plan.

Following Sorling was branding expert and Founder and President of Catalyst Branding, David Martin. Martin provided great detail about the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s 9 Principles that go into making up the PGA brand, as well as the background of his work with the PGA and the Ryder Cup brands.

Workshops and breakout sessions lead by the previous two speakers, as well as by Dr. Kyle Philpotts, Director of Education & Career Development of the PGA of GB&I, specifically looking at how to develop Strategic Plans, using the questions and work created by Martin, Sorling, and Philpotts.

Following lunch, the delegates had the pleasure of listening to Ken Schofield, current Confederation of Professional Golf board member and former Chief Executive of the European Tour, about his experiences at attending an astounding 19 Ryder Cups. Schofield’s incredible recollection skills for each of the tournaments was evident as he gave great detail on each and every match and the way in which they shaped the look of European golf as the tournament evolved to what it has become today.

Next on stage was Nikola Smoljenovic, the General Secretary of the PGA of Croatia, giving his account of the Initial Professional Education (IPE) programme that took place recently with nine professionals at Golf & Country Club Zagreb, ensuring the attending PGA countries got an insight into the programme and it’s offering directly from those that have experienced it.

The penultimate grouping of presenters for the day was lead by Director of Education for the Confederation of Professional Golf, Tony Bennett, alongside Ben Gittus from SkillsActive, who explained the meaning and relevance of their work within the recently completed Golf Stand Project (European Occupational Standards for Golf) – a project with the main objective to produce a range of indispensable European occupational standards aiming at defining the competences, skills and knowledge needed for those working in the sector as golf professionals.

Bennett and Gittus illustrated the project’s use by using Dr. Kyle Philpotts (PGA of GB&I), Martin Hasenbein (PGA of Germany), Rodrigo Ulrich (Golf & Operations Director, Boavista Golf), and David Shepherd (Director of golf) and James Beesley (Golf Professional) from Monte Rei Golf Club, as examples in how the project standards are of use to them and can be applied directly to their own specific area of work as an employer, employee, education provider, or governing body.

The last speakers of the day were Morne Botha, Managing Director of Corporate Golf Magazine and member of the PGA of South Africa, to discuss the exciting new project for a digital publication from the Confederation of Professional Golf, alongside Ivano Ficalbi, Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa.

The evening cocktail welcome reception was an opportunity for all the delegates to meet and discuss the first day’s events – Day Two will see the delegates visit Boavista Golf Club for the ‘President’s Challenge Golf Day’, and then return to the Congress rooms on Thursday for the next group of speakers.

Round 2 BEKO Classic 2012 – Enoch’s 66 Makes it a Welsh-Topped Leaderboard

The Welsh have made their mark after two rounds of the BEKO Classic 2012, with Rhys Enoch sitting as overnight leader at -7, closely followed by fellow countryman and Round 1 leader, Simon Edwards, as well as host of the United Kingdom’s top players.

Enoch’s second 18 started a little more subdued than yesterday’s birdie frenzy across the front-nine, but today reversed his fortunes by shooting a five-under back nine in stark contrast to his first round three-over par closing nine holes.

Birdies on fourteen and fifteen and a sensational eagle 3 on the par-five seventeenth hole means Enoch sits pretty at the top of the leaderboard entering the final day of play.

Round 1 leader, Simon Edwards, continued to show good form carding a solid level par 72 to remain at six-under for the tournament and second place heading into Round 3.

But hot the heels of both Enoch and Edwards is another pair of United Kingdom players – Englishman Andrew Butterfield’s fantastic five-under par 67 for round two, together with a solid level-par first round sets him at tied third with Scotsman Michael Stewart whose steady play earned him a second round one-under 71 to lie two back from the lead.

Ties for fifth place from Jamie Little (England), a previous winner of the BEKO Classic, and another Welshman in the form of Garry Houston mean that six players lie within three shots of Enoch – a recipe for a stunning final day of play tomorrow across Cornelia Golf Club’s Kings Course.

Round 1 BEKO Classic 2012 – Edwards’ Storms to Early Lead after Stunning 66

The first Round of the BEKO Classic 2012 culminated with Wales’ Simon Edwards topping the leaderboard after shooting a fantastic six-under par 66 at this year’s host venue, Cornelia Golf Club, in Belek, Turkey.

With little wind and not a cloud in the sky, scoring conditions were near perfect as this year’s stunning field got underway on the Faldo design layout, and previous BEKO Classic Champion Edwards got off to a slightly unsteady start with a bogey on the first hole. However, he ensured he fought back with four birdies by the turn, and another three by the end of his round, to card the leading score of the day.

Edwards is by no means running away with things at this early stage, having been closely followed by the four-under par (69) Michael Stewart – an uncharacteristic double-bogey at the ninth was cancelled out by no less than seven birdies ensuring a second place overnight position.

Four players lay tied for third position at three-under par (69) – Mark Murphy, previous winners Jamie Little and Liam Bond, as well as Stuart Little who made an eagle two on the par-four seventh hole.

Open Champion, Darren Clarke, To Play in BEKO Classic 2012

2011 Open Champion, Darren Clarke, will compete in this year’s Confederation of Professional Golf endorsed BEKO Classic from November 15-17, joining a host of top players that will battle it out at Cornelia Golf Club in Belek, near Antalya in southern Turkey.

Clarke brings with him the experience of almost 500 career starts on the European Tour since 1990 as well as his break-through major winning performance at the 2011 Open Championship, where he stormed to victory by three shots over Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.

Clarke, a five-time Ryder Cup player himself, has had a season that has also included a Vice-Captain role with the victorious Ryder Cup Team Europe, and no doubt his experience was passed on to the winning 12 players as they fought back for a record-equaling final day turnaround.

The BEKO Classic will already host another two European Ryder Cup players in the form of Andrew Coltart and Paul Broadhurst, making for a combined seven appearances, together with 24 European Tour wins, and 21 Challenge Tour wins between all the competitors.

Notable other entries include two-time Challenge tour winner, and one-time European Tour winner, Phil Golding, hoping to defend his BEKO Classic title after the stunning finish from the 2011 tournament; previous champions Simon Edwards, Jon Bevan, Jamie Little, Erol Simsek, Raymond Rusell, and Liam Bond; and winner of the 2004 Volvo PGA Championship, Scott Drummond.

The field will contest the Pro-Am over the Faldo design, 27-hole course, with a different 18-hole layout being played on each day, for a prize-fund of US$80,000, from November 15th to 17th 2012.

Enoch’s second 18 started a little more subdued than yesterday’s birdie frenzy across the front-nine, but today reversed his fortunes by shooting a five-under back nine in stark contrast to his first round three-over par closing nine holes.

Birdies on fourteen and fifteen and a sensational eagle 3 on the par-five seventeenth hole means Enoch sits pretty at the top of the leaderboard entering the final day of play.

Round 1 leader, Simon Edwards, continued to show good form carding a solid level par 72 to remain at six-under for the tournament and second place heading into Round 3.

But hot the heels of both Enoch and Edwards is another pair of United Kingdom players – Englishman Andrew Butterfield’s fantastic five-under par 67 for round two, together with a solid level-par first round sets him at tied third with Scotsman Michael Stewart whose steady play earned him a second round one-under 71 to lie two back from the lead.

Ties for fifth place from Jamie Little (England), a previous winner of the BEKO Classic, and another Welshman in the form of Garry Houston mean that six players lie within three shots of Enoch – a recipe for a stunning final day of play tomorrow across Cornelia Golf Club’s Kings Course.

With little wind and not a cloud in the sky, scoring conditions were near perfect as this year’s stunning field got underway on the Faldo design layout, and previous BEKO Classic Champion Edwards got off to a slightly unsteady start with a bogey on the first hole. However, he ensured he fought back with four birdies by the turn, and another three by the end of his round, to card the leading score of the day.

Edwards is by no means running away with things at this early stage, having been closely followed by the four-under par (69) Michael Stewart – an uncharacteristic double-bogey at the ninth was cancelled out by no less than seven birdies ensuring a second place overnight position.

Four players lay tied for third position at three-under par (69) – Mark Murphy, previous winners Jamie Little and Liam Bond, as well as Stuart Little who made an eagle two on the par-four seventh hole.

Supported by Glenmuir, Associaçäo Turismo do Algarve, Hotel Vila Galé Lagos and Ryder Cup European Development Trust, the tournament will feature 25 teams from the far reaches of the continent competing for the €35,000 prize fund, playing a 72-hole strokeplay competition with the best two individual scores from the Team of three counting towards the overall Team score.

Last year’s Champions, France, return to the tournament to defend their title, however, with a different venue in play than that of 2011’s hosts Vale do Lobo, it is a tough tournament to call, as each of the teams are represented by some of the nationalities’ most outstanding professional players.

Steve Parry admits he’s “chuffed to bits” to represent England in next week’s European International Team Championship at the Palmares Beach Resort in Portugal.

The 34-year-old Bolton-born professional, who runs his own golf academy at Westhoughton club Hart Common, earned his place in the three-man side for finishing third in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at De Vere Carden Park in August.

“It’s a great honour,” said former Leeds Cup winner Parry who will be joined in Portugal by former European Tour player Stuart Little, who’s attached to Minchinhampton, and Leicestershire’s Craig Shave.

“The only time I’ve played for my country was in the English Schools’ Championship as a lad,” he recalled.

England finished fourth at Vale do Lobo last year, 11shots adrift of winners France, in an event that attracts 26 teams.

“Hopefully we can do better this time and add further sporting glory to a summer littered with British sporting success,” added Parry, who this season finished second in the PGA North Region Order of Merit which he won two years ago.

His success in the Glenmuir also qualified him to play in the European UniCredit PGA Professional Championship of Europe in Bulgaria in September where he shared 11th place.

Four days of action start at Palmares on Tuesday.
